prilosec and tooth decay

Posted at 12:57 AM on Nov 24, 2008 by funone, #8419
has anyone ever experienced tooth decay (spliting, chipping or thinning) from taking prilosec? I have been taking the RX dose , 80 mg. day for about 3 years for sever acid reflux and it worked beautifully. I went to have my teeth cleaned & check up and everything was fine. About 4 months later, my teeth just started breaking on the ends and spliting like veneer splits. My teeth were perfect just a few months earlier. I also accidentally found a forum where a woman 's son had been taking the same amount (80 mg. 1 x day) for a year and it ate all of the enamel off of his teeth. I have writtenprilosec 3 times to no avail (of course, they are a pharmacutical co.) andhave been told that ALL of my teeth need to be crowned $22k. They decay and thinning are horrible and I have no insurance. In the past I have put thousands of $ in my teeth to keep them healthy and now this! Any feedback from anyone out there?

tooth decay has never been reported in any of the literature. I would guess (and this is only an opinion) that your case of GERD or reflux must be horrible to need 80mg/day. the normal dose for GERD is 20mg/day, maybe 40mg/day. I think it is much more likely that the esposure to acid in the saliva prior to you starting medication is what caused the enamel to be damaged. Now that you have been on medication for a while, the teeth are finally getting infected.

after coming off omeprzole (on it for four months for undiagnosed discomfort under rib cage - no heartburn symptoms etc) because of horrendous side effects, I visited my dentist for annual check up (I have excellent, well cared for teeth). She told me that my two front teeth needed filling behind due to erosion of enamel of which there was no sign at my last visit. She commented that my mouth was extremely dry (one of the things I noticed when on omeprazole although to be honest I was too busy dealing with the panic attacks (no history of anxiety) to pay much attention to it. She told me that saliva is a buffer against any form of erosion and the dry mouth (which only appeared when I was on omeprazole) could have easily caused it. Hope this helps.
