spotting between periods

I used NuvaRing for 6 months no problem. then on month 7 (last month) i started spotting a week before my period. Now on month 8 the same thing happened - spotting - only this time sooner - two weeks before my period. the spotting is dark brown sticky discharge, not like a normal period. what is going on?
