Substitute for drixoral

Posted at 2:38 PM on May 22, 2008 by lisalville, #6115
I have been taking Drixoral for thirty years. After numerous rounds of allergy tests, injections and medication changes, the allergists have advised me to return to what works for me. I just found out today that Drixoral is being discontinued due to the sudaphed-drug dealer connection. The ingredient that I need is the dexbrompheniramine maleate. Are their any alternatives with this antihistamine available? This is peak allergy season for me. Thank you for your help in advance. Sincerely, Lisa Lake Roedemeier

I have no clue. I've been searching as well...all Pharmacists say that the drug is only available in drixoral. And the Sudaphed-drug dealer connection? I haven't heard of this.

I am in the same boat as you! This past few weeks have been pure hell. Have you found anything yet? My pharmacy and a few others in which I have inquired have been no help.

This is the ONLY allergy med that works. After searching all over, the only word I have is that the Schering-Plough HealthCare Products Inc. is discontinuing this line because 'their other product lines create more revenue'- per a pharmacist. I too have used this since the med was only available by prescription in the early 1970's. I've relied on it ever since. I can't find relief in any other product....

OMG!!!! I just found out from the pharmacist this past week about the discontinuation. But he told me they were going to "restructure" the ingredients. I too have taken Drixoral for my allergies since the mid 80's. It is the ONLY thing that takes care of my horrible allergy eye symptoms! I had noticed you couldn't buy the non-drowsey formula a few years ago...but never imagined this! I told my husband it I had known I would have taken $100 and bought all I could from the area pharmacies....hahaha, do you think that would have looked suspicious ie. the drug dealers connection. Well, if anybody finds something comprable I hope you post it!!! I scrounged around and found enough drixoral at my house for probably this year...but after that....aaauuuggghhhh......

I have had sinus/allergy problems for years and now am having ashma attacks. The drixoral has worked well for all the symptoms, and only today I was told by several pharmacists that this is being discontinued and will no longer be made or available. I also need help trying to get this ASAP.

HELP !!!!...IS ANYONE ELSE HAVING HORRIBLE WITHDRAWAL SYMPTOMS...OTHER THAN ALLERGY PROBLEMS ? I WAS TOTALLY NAUSEATED FOR MORE THAN A WEEK AFTER DISCONTINUING DRIXORAL AFTER 33 YEARS !! I COULD ONLY EAT SALTINES FOR A WEEK. LOST WEIGHT ! I STILL DO NOT FEEL RIGHT. TAKING BENADRYL TO HELP WITH THE NAUSEA AND "AIR POCKETS" IN STOMACH. I'M ALMOST "AFRAID" TO ORDER FROM CANADA...THEY MAY JUST DISCONTINUE IT THERE IN THE NEAR FUTURE !@# THEN WHAT ????????????

You can get the other ingredient dexbrompheniramine maleate is available in Children's Dimetap- which my allergist told me to get (I am an adult) the dose is smaller than that of the drixorel (this is an extended release) and the Dimetap you take every 4 hours. This does seem to help. I know other adults who were also told by several different doctors to take this. Hope it helps.

I too have been calling every pharmacy in my area for my husband with no luck. One pharmacist told me today that in mid August they are expecting to get in 20 packs of Drixoral. My girlfriend did much research for me and found out that the company that manufactures is moving from NJ and they expect the product to be off the market for a year. Hopefully the year is almost over because he is absolutely MISERABLE!!!

I called the company Schering Plough and got an evasive sounding explanation that the production was stopped due to circumsances beyond their control (and they would not explain what that meant) and that production would not resume this year, but might start up the line sometime next year, probablye date unavailable. Suggest that at many as possible call and contact them to force the issue, maybe accelerate them.

THANKS TO ALL for posting. I'm in Northern CA, and it is my story is pretty much the same as all the others. I figured they were going to pull it soon. It is just to difficult to sell. Very sad to see it go. It was the only thing that really helped. The "pseudoephedrien sulfate" was the important ingredient for me. It is the only thing that dries up the constant nasal drip in the back of the throat. My allergist and other doctors keep giving me nasal sprays, but it does get back far enough. They are all surprised when I tell them it just isn't working. I have HBP so I shouldn't be taking Drixoral anyway but it was the only way to get relief. I would take in about 3 times a week to stretch it out, and only at night an hour before bed. Now I don't know what to do?

I've found it! Do a search for LODRANE 24D. "ECR Pharmaceuticals has launched a second once-a-day allergy product, Lodrane 24D, an extended release formulation of brompheniramine maleate and pseudoephedrine HCl." http://www.allergizer.com/50226711/lodrane_24d_oncedaily_antihistamine_and_decongestant.php

Unfortunately, Lodrane is by prescription only. You can buy Drixoral online via Canadian drugstores, but they are outrageously expensive. What a drag! I am in the same boat, and by the time either CN drix or my prescription is granted (after I "prove" my need by dragging my sneezing, dripping, watery self through the halls of the med facility), I will be miserable beyond words! I HATE being dependent on drugs! Any ideas on breaking this cycle? Unfortunately for me, my number 1 allergen is year-round - you guessed it - Dust Mite Dung!

I found Droxoral from an online Canadian pharmacy called Trumedcanada.com They are the cheapest and guarantee stock. The actual ink to their product page is http://www.trumedcanada.com/OTC/Drixoral.Dexbrompheniramine.cold.12.hour.relief.aspx They have awesome customer service too!! I am certainly going back to them for my refills!!

I bought Drixoral a few weeks ago and had no clue it was discontinued. I went back this week and found out this terrible news. The pharmacist at Walgreens told me that the closest thing they carried was Wal-finate. I didn't get it cause I didn't have my ID with me at the time and it was behind the counter. I might go back today.

The Best and Closest thing to Drixoral is Claritin 24 hour. Check the ingradients. But Drixoral is Droxoraland I agree with drixoralna1. I bought my supplies and am peaceful now. Try your luck and shop around.
