Tremors or

My 11 year old daughter has been on Singulair for just over a week. A few days ago she began having tremors or "the shakes." So bad in fact, she's having a hard time getting to sleep. She was on Singulair for several months last year, and her doctor took her off of it when she was going through a period of mysterious fatigue - we never figured out what it was, but she did get over it. After doing some research today, I believe it may have been the Singulair. I think my doctor thought the same, he just didn't want to say. We put her back on the Singulair last week because her exercise induced asthma has worsened recently. I am seriously considering taking her off of the Singulair. Has anyone else experienced tremors or shaking while taking Singulair?

I don,t know what dose she is taking but the recommended dose for an 11 yr. old child with asthma is 5mg. chewable tab once daily in evening. Next question: any other meds, prescribed OR over the counter?? Perhaps a drug interaction. Does she use a rescue inhaler(Albuterol)?? Is she being followed by a pediatric specialist for the asthma?? I surely hope so. Family practice docs try to be psychiatrists, surgeons, radiologists, pulmonologists, etc.! They simply are NOT qualified to treat children with serious conditions. Pediatricians specialize in CHILDREN only. I would call the doc who ordered the Singulair TWICE and have him call you directly TODAY. Good luck. Tremors/shaking are central nervous system symptomology! I have found that too much Albuterol causes shaking and rapid heart rate(bronchodilater)

Thanks for the reply. Took her to the doctor today - he is a pediatrician that specializes in asthma/allergies - I trust him. He could not say for sure that it is the Singulair, but it is a possiblity. He checked for strep - said that could cause some strange symptoms. The strep culture came back negative. We are taking her off of the Singulair. She does use a rescue inhaler - Xopenex as needed for the exercise induced asthma. She has begun using that 1/2 hour before exercise. However, she had not used it for more than 24 hours before she got the shakes. BTW - she was on a 5 mg dosage of chewable Singulair tablet. Dr. said to give it a week and see if the shakes go away.

Tremor is a possible side effect of Singulair and was added to the label almost two years ago. Tiredness, muscle aches/cramps have been on the label for quite a while. Please visit www.parentsforsafety.org for more info on Singulair. Hope your daughter feels better soon!
