Trouble from being overmedicated on Synthroid?

Posted at 1:17 PM on Feb 08, 2008 by karly122, #4757
I was over medicated. My normal dose is 137mg of Synthroid. My doctor okayed for me to move up to 150mg as I was complaining about symptoms during "that time of the month". Well, I was on the 150mg for 2 weeks, when I was absolutely positive it was too much. I called my doctor and he told me to skip a pill and resume the 137mg the next day. So, I did. During my one day off, my symptoms of being over medicated didn't go away, but got a little better. I started the 137mg the next day and two nights later, I was again absolutely positive that my symptoms were just getting worse. It was very scary! I had fast, hard beating heart, tremors like crazy, extreme nervousness, burning feelings on my skin (upper torso), my face was really red. I was so scared that I started crying and my face got really tingly all over. So, I went to see doctor and he said take 2 days off and he was going to put me on a lower dose (100mg). So, I took 2 days off, and this morning I called him because I still have some of the tremor and nervousness left. I am still waiting for his call back. I want to tell him that I am not putting anymore medicine in my body until my symptoms are completely gone. I spoke with 2 pharmacists who said Synthroid stays in the body a long time with a half life of 6-7days. One said I should probably take this 6-7 days off before starting at a lower dose again. The other agreed and said the MINIMUM amount of days I should take off is 3 days and then resume at a lower dose. I am trying to get in touch with my doctor, so he can fax a prescription to have my levels checked at the lab. My question is, am I more sensitive to this medication than most people. I have read posts that doctors just cut back the dosage and the person's body adjusts just fine. Why is this so hard for me? Thanks for any insight!

Ok, I am going to reply to my own message now that I have an answer to it from my endocrinologist. Maybe if anyone is having trouble titrating their dose after being on too much medicine, this will help them also. The reason being is, some people (like me) metabolize medications a lot slower than most people. That's it, that's why. -Karly
