My husband just started Elavil today and he has slept all day, feels nausea, sick to stomach, head, body aches and pains. He has a fever. To me it seems like he is getting the flu but it all started after this medication. Please somebody help me. I am afraid this drug is not for him. What is this drug used for and why these side effects? If you know anything about this drug please email me at ******
I am on Elavil 10 mg small dose for nigh time insomnia and sever day time hypersomnolence. Dr cannot rule out narcolepsy. Elavil is actually helping me to sleep. I am using not as an anti-depressant, which is what it is normal used for, but I am using it for it's side effect reasons: for sleep and decrease in night time urination. It causes urinary retention as well, which helps with night time urination. It knocks me out, there would be no way I could take this in the daytime and function.
I would suggest talking with his doctor to change his med schedule to take it at night (HS: hour before sleep). The most common side effect is drowsiness/sedation. That is why doctors use for for patients with insomnia to help them sleep at night right before we go to sleep. I hope this helps.
It works on the receptors in your brain and is a very strong anticholenergic: The part of the nervous system which regulates an assortment of involuntary operations is called the “autonomic nervous system.” It is divided into two areas: the “sympathetic” system which is responsible for generating changes during a “fight or flight situation” (such changes include increased circulation to muscles, increased heart rate, pupil dilation etc.) and the “parasympathetic” nervous system which is responsible for maintaining the body’s “status quo.” The parasympathetic system uses “acetylcholine” as its chief neurotransmitter. An anticholinergic medication, disrupts acetylcholine and creates side effects such as dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation, dried respiratory secretions. And is works as a strong antihistamine which we know can cause sedation.
