I have Ulcerative Colitis really bad and I have been on Prednisone for a long while now. On top of having blood sugar problems, which were recently discovered at a stay at Loma Linda Hospita, I have gained almost 50 pounds. It's taken a huge toll on my self esteem and I wanted to know if anyone knew if the weight would start to come off once I discontinued use of the Prednisone and if my blood sugar would return to normal. I've tried to keep it under control with diet and a small amount of exercise (I'm very ill) but nothing seems to work. Any insights from anyone? Will the weight come off on its own or will I have to exercise like crazy? Before this disease, I ran 5 miles a day, so as long as I am healthy I don't mind the work. Will I need to do that again or can I count on at least some of the weight to come off on its own? Any input would be appreciated.
I think the high blood sugar is a result of taking the prednisone. That happened to me also but as my prednisone dosage came down so did my sugar. I can't remember the exact amount of prednisone I was taking at the time my sugar problem resolved itself. I am still on lower doses of prednisone but my sugar level is OK now. My doctor said that if your pancreas is normal then your sugar levels will be normal again.
As far as weight gain. For a long time when I was on very high doses of prednisone my weight remained stable. I think I was burning calories just from my body being so speeded up from the medication. When I got to the lower doses I started to gain - FAST. I am on 4 mgs now and have been doing Weight Watchers, treadmill and weights every day for the last month. It is working but it is very slow going. In my experience the weight doesn't come off on its own unfortunately.
I agree that prednisone isn't ever good for your self esteem. The moon face and facial hair are especially lovely, but sometimes it is the only thing that can keep a medical condition under control. I prefer the prednisone to the alternative!
