I'm 17, female, and i've been prescribed this medicine in 25 mg dosage. This isn't the only thing my doctor has me on. I've been diagnosed with IBS so I'm on dicyclomine (Bentyl) 4x a day, 1/2 a 10mg tablet of baclofen, zoloft in the morning plus oxicodone and 1,000mg tylenol for pain

After my father died in mid-Oct.I had lost alot of weight due to my depression. My doctor immediately put me on amitriptyline. At first I didn't notice any side effects other than it got me to sleep at night.Of course I wasn't really noticing much of anything but then-all I did was sleep. I felt like my whole world was over-I thought I would die without my father...but I never did and that scared me more than actually dying, living in a world where there was no one to take care of me or love me like my father did-He was always my KNight in Shinning ARMOUR...My doc. kept increasing my dose upto 100mg and then one dayI just got up out of my bed and renewed my nursing license and went back to work after eight years of just being a mom and a college student. It wasscary but very exciting but I wouldn't have been able to without the help of the med. My mood was cheerful-my children even noticed a huge difference in my happy appearance it was great stuff......until I noticed that I had gained almost 45lbs. from Oct.to the end of Dec. And another 20 by Jan. I GOT FAT FAST!! The worst side effect of the med for me was that it made me crave chocolate and lots of it! I would wake up in the middle of the night and go bake chocolate cookies and then eat the whole batch all myself. My doc says that the tiny little pill couldn't be responsible for gaining 65lbs in three months. BUt he obvious ly hadn't done his research because I have since talk to many people who experienced the chocolate craving and still others who have also gained ALOT of weight. So if you want to be undepressed -it should do the job that is unless being rather over weight tends to make you depressed. LOL Can't win for loosing huh?

My prescription for Amitriptyline has suddenly been stopped after several months, on 50 mg. a night. The withdrawal symptoms are dreadful. Please can you help, as my doctor does not want to give me this anymore.

Thank you.

I have recently been prescribed this medication for severe migrain headaches. 25mg per night. I am concerned about taking this medication because it is an anti-depressent. I'm afraid of it affecting my personality. Has anybody noticed this? I tried to start it at night about a week ago, and didn't take another because I was so groggy and tired all day the next day. Does this side effect subside over time?

My daughter takes this for her headaches as well, but for the first time she took it without properly eating beforehand. She has been vomiting all day and has had very painful stomach cramps. When taked with food, she has no issues and is helped a great deal from this medication.

A little over a year ago, I had muratic acid pured on both of my bare feet, causing 2nd and 3rd dagree burns over 75% of my feet. This has caused irreverseable nerve damage, and poor blood circulation, and keeps me in pain 24/7. My doctor prescribed 25mg Amitriptyline, and said it would help with both the pain, and the sleep. Before that they had me on Neurontin, Hydrocodone, and Ultram (which does nothing for any type of pain, regardless of how minor). As far as the pain goes, it does help a little, but as for the sleep, it does not make me sleepy what so ever. Instead, it makes me feel wired out, like I got to be constantly doing something or I will go crazy, which is hard to do when standing and walking are both very painful. Has anyone else had this side effect from Amitriptyline?

i am a 17 y/o girl who was put on this medicine to stop continually vomitting and nausea. i have been on it for around 4 weeks now, my vomitting has lightened up a bit (previously it was 10+ times a day, now its down to less than 5), but i have experienced, horrible diarriah, excessive tiredness, muscle stiffness and aches, and coldness. i have also experienced loss of appetite with about a 10lb weight loss so far, that which i am not complaining about, because during the years i was constanly vomitting, i actually gained close to 35lbs, and i have another condition that causes me not to be able to lose weight. so i am debating wether or not the bad side effects out weigh the good.

I'm 14 and i have been taking this medication (25 mg every evening) for a little over a year now. I have been taking it to help with migraines, ice pick migraines. I have to say it is very suprising to hear all of these side effects. I haven't had one. It has completely rid me of all headaches without weight gain or keeping me drowsy all day. A positive addition to my headaches gone it has helped me sleep somewhat sounder throught the night.

My son vomitted anywhere from 1 to 15 times a day for 3 years. He went to very elite hospitals, gastroenterologist, psychiatrist, & many invasive tests. Then he went to a Neurosurgeon & they prescribed him amitryptiline. Within a month the vomotting was weekly. In a few months it happened monthly & now its very rare. This medicine was a god send. He was on up to 13 meds a day prior to this. I am very grateful to hvae found such a miracle..

I also take 25mg of this anti-depressent but I take it 1/2 hour before going to bed. I also take neurontin for neuropathy. Befor I started amitriptylene,I only slept 2 to 3 hours at night because of the pain so I will take the side effects any day. I get a good nights sleep most of the time.

I have been on 10 mg. Amitriptyline for almost 2 years for headaches. I've gained 28 pounds and counting. I just can't loose the extra weight while on the medication. I've tryed everything from Weight Watchers to Adkins without success. Has anyone else had simular problems with low doses?

I just wanted to let people know that for one person the "side effects" can and will be totally different than another's.
I have been taking 100 mg daily for years. The only noticed side effect for me is dry mouth, dry skin and can getting sun burned easily. NO weight gain or heart burn/palputations.

my husband is taking 100mg. for( neuropathy) that is the diagnosis he was given. I'm not quite sure it's correct and i noticed that he seems to be very tired after taking this medication- he takes it at 6:00pm
He is also taking neurotin and other medication which supposedly does not interfere with the amitriptyline. he seems very low key, which isn't really his personality. thank you

I most notice grogginess in the AM if I don't take the PM dose early enough (need to take around 5:00). Also, I tend to feel cold much more often (usually I'm hot). I experienced weight gain as well, but I'm not sure I can attribute that to this medication... :-(

maybe it's the midnight snacks giving you the heartburn :)
I've experienced that it helps me sleep and helps with pain... which is why I'm taking it to begin with. I noticed a slight increase in hunger with an increased dose. I also had more energy and stamina, though. The trade-off is worth it.
