Back in May 2007 I screened to take part in a clinical trial involving advair diskus. apart of the screening involved giving me a dosage of the drug. I was given a heart monitor to wear for 24 hours I was snet home and told to return tomorrow. The same day I left with the heart monition, I felt tired through out the day, very sick and nauseated. I didn't make it into the trial for whatever reason, but as the days went on my symptoms got worse, they included: severe constipation, heart burn, burping (GERD like symptoms), BLOATING, I experienced energy dips and dives throughout the day, headaches and dizziness. This went on for months, then I began to have pains in the middle of my upper back...then the chest pains started, after realizing it had to be more than muscle pain, I decided to go to the ER. I told them my symptoms, they did an X-Ray and CAT SCAN. the conclusion of the two test was an enlarged heart(Cardiomyopathy), and it remains so today.

I have recently learned that chemicals in some drugs can damage/weaken the cardiac tissue..which has to happen before the heart can enlarge.

In June, 2007 I was given a sample of ADVAIR by my primary physician for treatment of acute bronchitis. After 6 days of taking 250/50, I suffered hoarseness, voice changing up/down due to mucus in the throat, pain in chest, severe anxiety attacks, bloating in both legs of up to 7 lbs. of fluid per leg, blurred vision, sleep apnea, tiredness, etc. After being off ADVAIR for 6 weeks and after umpteen tests by both my primary physician and my heart doctor, symptons lessened a little. In the meantime, for the months of July and August, I was tested by both doctors, had to have blood drawn with each change in medication, countless doctor office visits, countless lab work done, etc. This ordeal has been extremely time-consuming and very espensive.

Dated September 13, 2007.

Severe leg pain, constant rattling, wheezy chest, severe anxiety attacks, fuzzy thinking, hypomanic symptoms, bloating, fatigue, increased blurry vision, after 6 months at incrased 250 doseage, wild dreams disturbing sleep. Stopped taking Advair a month ago. Within two days, fuzzy thinking cleared up rapidly and back to normal within 7 days. Within 10 days, energy level returned. Sleeping very well. Wheezy chest mostly gone. Bloating gone. Anxiety attacks...one very mild one four weeks after I stopped the Advair, but was able to control it by regulating my breathing and distracting myself...went away quickly...but when I was on Advair, ended up in ER with panic attack. When I began the Advair, I was living in an apartment with a flooding problem that created mold and mildew, and I am allergic to mold and mildew. I was having difficulty sleeping at night from the coughing, and was given Advair, and the doseage was upped after one year. Initially it helped me, but with the increased doseage came all the symptoms above. I moved, stopped the Advair, and now I am fine (just still have the allergies, of course.)

My asthma started with my first pregnancy, 9 years ago. I've tried every drug on the market with no results. I can easily exhaust a 200 inhalation rescue inhaler in 2 to 3 days. I've been on Advair for almost 2 years. It was like a miracle at first! I thought my troubles were over! Lately, the Advair is not helping. I sleep with an inhaler under my pillow at night because I wake up 8 to 10 times a night gasping for breath. It takes 10 to 12 puffs to recover. Anyway, I was hospitalized recently for extreme stomach discomfort. The doctors thought it was my gall bladder, intestinal blockage, blah blah blah...they couldn't diagnose my severe bloating, burning and discomfort. THANKS to all of you who took the time to post symptoms. I thought I had stomach cancer or something. Now I'm sure its the Advair. Also, I have terrible short term memory problems, mood swings, weight gain, and no sense of smell. I'm 33 and my OB/GYN put me on hormone therapy for menapause. After what I've read tonight...I'm convinced the Advair is the culprit. I'm terrified that if I stop taking it, I will die from the Asthma. Any suggesstions?

I was prescribed advair for "allergies" my symptoms mostly coughing from the 2 cigarettes I have a night.
I am post menopause so I thought the weight gain and belly bloating was "normal". So how interesting to read the different side affects that everyone is experencing. I'll stop now and see if the bloating stops. I've also have been experencing joint pain also attributing that to age and the possibility of arthritis? ? ?
Thanks for this site. I hope to get rid of this bloating. I've only been taking the advair disk . . . well I just started my second disk last week.
Think I'll quit while the quiting is good.

I am not even sure I really have asthma. A german doctor said that I do not have it but all American doctors say I do. I have been on Advair for 3 years and noticed weight gain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, hoarseness to the point of total loss of voice, a rash on my face, major hip pain, shoulder pain and back pain, and vertigo. I spent almost a whole year at specialists to find out why I kept loosing my voice. I went to a eye/nose/throat specialist who couldn't find anything and proposed speech therapy. Then I was sent to a thyroid specialist who put me on synthroid but also said that this has nothing to do with my loss of voice. I was even on 6 weeks of total voice restriction. At one point, with all the back, hip and shoulder pain, thyroid stuff, etc., I was on 8 different, heavy duty medications from valium to triple antibiotics and such. Now after reading all of these emails, I will take myself off Advair, Lexapro, Vioxx, Valium, Ambien, Lipitor, Synthroid, and pain killers with Codein. I really thought I must be going crazy but now it all makes sense.

Thank you all!

I am a 28 y.o. that began on 250/50 in february. Hadn't had asthma problems since I was 17-then had an an upper respiratory infection in january-went to the doctor because chest tightness wouldn't go away& was immediately placed on
Advair. Went to an allergist who sent me to a cardiologist because my heart rate in the office was 176! I always had a fast heart rate, but worried I had some congenital defect. After multiple tests, an electrophysiologist told me I should limit my albuterol use but said nothing about the advair. I went back to the allergist last month and my breathing was worse so they increased me to 350/50 twice a day. I had horrible palpitations and was very jittery the first few days, but I figured it might get better-and it did. But I have nausea now about every other day, only gained about 5 pounds, but the bloating has made me go up a dress size on bottom. Then for the last two weeks I have been geeting horrible cramps in my calves and feet & I started to wonder if it could be my advair because I have never experienced anything like this before. Also, I have been very moody, depressed and irrational, which I blamed on my "health problems" (my asthma is still not really under control) but now I wonder if this is a side effect as well. I'm so glad I discovered this site, because I was going to "tough it out"---not any more! I am talking to my doctor right away !!

I'm only 19 and have terrible asthma. The doctor first put me on prednazone, then that didn't work, so he tried 50/250 advair. I've been on it for almost a year. I've had 20 lb weight gain along with terrible bloating and bowel problems, which the doc claims is "irritable bowel syndrome" but I really do think it is caused from advair after reading this! I've been trying to ween myself off it and notice that I can breathe better on my own than with it. I have a gyno appointment soon about my bloating but I do think it is from advair.

I recently posted severe bloating in my stomach which I was very worried it was something else, but suspected Advair. Well I received all of the results back from blood tests and my pelvic ultrasound and they were all fine. I have discontinued using Advair and my stomach has gone down A LOT, it is nice and flat again although (of course) I am having trouble breathing again. My face is clearing up too, it gave me horrible rashes and breakouts and the dark circles under my eyes are gone too.
I did research on some natural alternatives to help asthma and some simple changes in diet and supplements can help as well as breathing exercises and yoga. I am going to try that for now and keep my albuterol handy for emergencies. I have had it with traditional medicine and inconsiderate doctors who are just too busy to really care about the root of the problem, they just give you a quick fix that can hurt you long term. this medicine has actually made my asthma WORSE since I stopped taking it.
A book I recommend is "Reversing Asthma" by Richard N. Firshein, D.O. he is an osteopathic doctor.
take care everyone.

I am hoping it is just Advair but I have a gyno appointment tomorrow. I have severe bloating in my adomen without any significant pain. It started a month after starting this Advair and never goes away. It is wrose after eating and I noticed belching which I never had a problem with before unless I have soda. I have dark circles under my eyes which even my husband noticed and a lot of swelling in many areas of my body.
I feel more anxious and have sore throats every morning.
I am going to seek an alternative. Pulmicort gave me a horrible rash on my legs and puffiness so hopefully there is something else I can try. If anyone has any suggestions please help. I used to have a very flat stomach.

I got on this site just to see if all the side effects I am having since starting Advair is my imagination, I see it is not. I was scared to death to start this steroid because I have taken them off and on all my life for my asthma. I have ended up with a suppressed immune system and in the hospital every few months when on them and they have a lingering effect sometimes for up to a year or more. My Respiratory specialist assured me, that being an inhaled steroid, Advair has a very minimal systemic effect. Well obviously that is not true for everyone!
I am having a lot of the same side effects that some of you are having, even though, I rinse my mouth out carefully after each inhalation. I am on the 500/50 dose.
I have been on it only 2 weeks and
I can not quit eating! I crave something constantly and have already gained about 7 pounds this last two weeks. My face is breaking out and I have pain so bad in my hands, fingers, and legs. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis also and have a lot of pain, but this is different and more intense! My eye sight has gotten worse too, and it is a strain to see well enough to read even with my glasses on.
I too am very disappointed because I could breathe better from the very first inhalation. I am due for a dose right now, and I am not taking it. I am done. The side effects are not worth the better breathing. I have headaches, swelling of the face, hands, fingers, and legs. I have pain in my chest and terrible bloating in my abdomen. I feel generally achy all over. I have also been very moody. These are steroid effects!!

I've been on Advair for 1 month. Gained 15 lbs. Major abdomen bloating. Just recently started breaking out like crazy on my face & neck - tiny little zit bumps. Had some sort of canker type sore in mouth for two weeks. Have had an extremely hoarse voice for the whole time. After reading all these posts with the same symptoms - I'm going to try getting off the stuff. Will let you all know how it goes. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!!

I have the cramping in my legs and my arms and legs constantly ache-- Also--I have not seen this on any of the above but has ANYONE had any dealings with hair loss? I have been loosing alot of hair daily for the past few months and I also have the bloating of the stomach all the time.
I am only on Combivent and ADVAIR so something is doing it to me. I am 62---
