Paper-thin skin on arms, hair falling out by the handfuls, clotting problems with the slightest scrape on my arms, bruising on my legs. Going to go back to Advair 250/50 and see if these problems go away.

My son (9) was on advair off and on for a while for severe asthma. I noticed depression, anxiety, fatigue and fibromyalgia type pains all over his body. I had him checked for lupus and other diseases and all negative. He also developed a severe rash between his legs causing much pain and discomfort as he had to walk like a bull-legged horse-riding cowboy. Showering often never helped. I assume he has candidis yeast infection(systemic). He was finally put on Prozac and I took him off Advair against my doctors advice. i took him off slowly and your body may need to make it's own steriods and not go into shock. He takes as much albuterol as needed to get him better and then i give him prednisone for 3 days when things become an emergency. tTe prednisone leads my son to anger and suicide but it goes away after he finishes his course, but it saves his life. He is now 13 and much happier and his face and body has thinned out by half. I will never give my son Advair again.

I was on Advair for 6 years and I had the painful cramps in my legs so bad i could hardly move and my legs and hands were always falling asleep.Although it helped with my asthma the pain was to much to handle the doctor who told me to take the advair told me i had tendinitis in my legs well as of 2005 i have stopped taking advair and as soon as i stopped i never felt the pain again and my hands and feet never feel asleep again I stopped cold turkey and I will never take it ever again. P.S my new doctor i got in 2005 told me to stop taking Advair and i didn't listen to him right away but I soon realized how bad the inhaler was.It has been 3 years now and i have never felt that pain again.

My son is 4 years old and has been on Advair 100/50 for 3 weeks. He has chronic bronchitis and since the Dr has put him on Advair we have noticed a change in his behavior. He cannot sit still and is wired ALL the time. His pre-school teacher said he is being very disruptive in class. He has trouble sleeping at night and he has a runny nose all the time. He has been telling me that his legs hurt him and his stomach hurts all the time. I assumed the legs hurting was due to him "growing". Boy was I dumb. I now believe it is linked to this medicine!
Has anyone ever stopped taking this medicine "cold turkey?"

My son was prescribed Advair for his asthma a week ago. He has been having leg cramps so bad, his legs buckle on him. Dr said it's not because of Advair, but after reading this site, I'm taking him off Advair immediately.

I've always had problems with leg cramps but now, since I've started taking Advair, every muscle in my body cramps -- BADLY. So I'm done, I'm going to call the doctor Monday a.m. & tell him I've stopped the medication. I just thought it was a fluke and I was having a bad time (have done that), but since getting on here and seeing that other people have had this problem, I'm sure it's the Advair. Occassionally I've forgotten a dose & the cramps have gotten better. So now I'm putting 2/2 together. As much as Advair has helped my cough, it's put me in so much pain I can't get one hrs. sleep before I have to jump out of bed and try walking a cramp out, during the day my back, arms, hands, chest, stomach muscles are all cramping painfully while I'm trying to work.

ive taken advair for 3 years, ive had a few side effects including: weight gain, pains in my leg, and tiredness. i dont know if these are from the advair or not. i never had these issues before taking it. i really dont know what to do. if im not on advair i have a hard time breathing and have chest pains. Does breathing better out weigh the side effects that it causes??? i have problems with inflamation and advair seems to work well with that aspect. Is there natural alternatives? HELP!!!

Hi -after reading another post- I realized that I had forgotton to mention the horrible bruising from using Advair. At first I was shocked at my bruises, and thought that I most have fallen and somehow forgotton about it. Then I went out dancing, and my dance partner pointed out the bruises on my legs and he was quite shocked and concerned.

I've been taking advair for almost a year and a half. The last 6 months or so I've felt tired and take an iron supplement once in a while. Recently my left hip has been hurting like there is no tomorrow. About 3 months ago I noticed that pain would shoot up along the backs of my legs and gluteal muscles. Usually if you start walking you feel better after a while right? But my legs have always been my strongest body muscles and my glutes have never hurt from just ordinary walking. However, I rarely have to use my albuterol.

I am an RN. I have complained to my allergist and Practisioner for years that I have terrible hip pain, muscle and joint pain with the Advair. It works great to control the wheezing, but everytime I start back on it, within 2 weeks I am limping and crying with pain in my legs and hips. Everytime I manage to get off for two weeks the pain subsides. I have had xrays of my hips and there is no deterioration. I too have gained considerable weight. We have tried Spriva and it also had adverse reactions. It increased mucus instead of decreasing it. If anyone has a suggestion, I would like to hear what it is.

I have been using Advair recently for coughing from sinus drainage. I only have a very mild case of asthma. Two sinus surgeries have helped. Yesterday after using it in the AM my lips and mouth area tingled. I became very warm and then cold to the point where it was dripping off my forehead. I had a hard time breathing and had a panic feeling. Then my feet and legs began to ITCH. It moved to my arms, back and down the body. Later my whole body ached which lasted 24 hours. I immediately called the doctor and went on Benedryl. He also phoned in medication for the itch. After reading some of the posts, I now know where my weight gain is coming from. Never will use it again.

EVERY MUSCLE FROM MY NECK TO MY KNEES HURT...NECK, SHOULDERS, CHEST, BACK, ARMS AND SOMETIME MY LEGS. ITS STARTS TO ACHE IN THE MORNING, AND BY AFTERNOON AND EVENING I HAVE TO TAKE SOMETHING FOR THE PAIN. WHY??

I've had the same side effects as everyone else. I started with a terrible burning in my mouth, stomach. I told the Dr. and he took me off the Advair and prescribed Nystatin for 10 days. At that time I was using 250/50. Later when I couldn't breathe, I ask him to let me go back on it. I have leg cramps, problems sleeping and I too have gained a lot of weight. I feel very "full", it seems to be pressing on my sides and lungs preventing me from breathing well. I went back on 100/50. I have discussed all the side effects with my Dr., and I even called the
company. They were very nice, ask for my permission to contact my Dr. about it, and of course I said, "Sure". They did contact him, because I ask, so yes, they are aware of all the things. as the previous person who posted said, it seems to get worse every year and I would have to stop and use an
inhaler before making it 1 block. However, I was told by my previous Dr. some years ago that as the disease progresses there would be pressure on my sides, which in turn would put a strain on my heart which would eventually cause heart problems. So I was expecting that before Advair came along.
Even though Advair does help the breathing, I feel sure that
the complaints most of us have (since they are all about the same problems) that Advair is the cause. I was told that if you rinse your mouth well the burning would not happen. Not true! I rinse and gargle each time and I STILL have that problem. The cramps in my feet and legs are another problem that has been very bad for me. I suppose it would be helpful if everyone reported the problems. I was told by the Company that each complaint they receive is put on record at FDA. They keep a record of all complaints that are reported (so I was told). I can tell you that they are very understanding and make every effort to be helpful.

I just started Advair 250/50 a few days ago - the dose is 2x per day. My asthma is better, but I've noticed tingling and numbness in my arms and lower legs. I was on Flovent previously and this never happened before. I'm going to try dropping to 1x per day on the Advair to see if this helps. Has anyone else experienced this? TA

I have been on Advair for 3 years or more. I started on 100/50, then went to 250/50. And after a while I had a terrible "burning" in my mouth. I had never associated it with the Advair. During a routine visit with my Pulmonary Dr. I mentioned that my mouth, throat and stomach had been burning very bad. He immediately said, "ADVAIR". I asked if he thought that Advair would do that. He replied, "I know it can". He told me to stop using it and he gave me a prescription for Nystatin. The yeast had gone through my mouth, throat and my stomach and intestines were burning too. However, after a few days I had to ask him to let me go back on the Advair because I was having a bad problem with my breathing. I am now on 100/50. I've had all the same problems that everyone else is talking about. I believe two people have mentioned the "foot cramps". Two of my toes will draw together and I have to pull them apart. I also have bad cramps in my legs. I mentioned the problems with my toes drawing together and nobody seems to believe me. I too have a problem with my weight. I keep wishing I could give up the Advair but I have COPD and use oxygen. I use Atrovent solution and Xopenex in my nebulizer in addition to the Advair. I wrote to the Company about all the "symptoms" I was having. They were very nice, listened to all my complaints and they did follow-up with a letter to my Dr. I'm sure they had heard my story before. But I wii have to say they were concerned and tried to be helpful.

I am 30 years old and have been on advair 125 for a few years. I've had symptoms for years now and dont recall having them before taking advair. Here are some signs that finally got me to search the web
Co-workers and girlfriend constantly commenting on my shaking legs. My legs always sway back and forth and I dont even notice, but people around me tell me to stop.
Heart Pinchings, I call them, tight chest, feels like someone is in my chest pinching my heart. I saw the doctor about it, took tests, all was ok, went to the heart institute, took tests, all was ok. This symptom has been extremely anoying for about a year.
Numbness in my arm, sometimes i loose sensation in parts of my arm, i can pinch it and dont feel anything. This one comes and goes.
Severe pain in my buttox cheek for no reason. No injury, same lifestyle pattern, but a severe pain came a while back, felt like my buttox was bruised from an injury.
Irritable, mood swings, paranoia, anxiety. This is the worst, again, I dont notice this much but the people around me tell me to relax.
Sleep deprevation, I wake up so many times during the night it's awful, this is ruining my life.
My eyes, within the past year, my eyesight has gotten much worse, sometimes my eyes will just water, like im crying for no reason. I had to get new glases and can no longer watch television without them on. Last year I could watch tv with no glasses.
I am stoping advair today and contacting the doctor or hospital to make sure it's safe and perhaps try an alternative. Hopefully it helps, hopefully I remember to update this forum on my results.

For information to the previous posts:
I have been off Advair now for 10 days (last post was on March 2). I switched to Qvar and it is working great. It took a week to get rid of the after affects of Advair - legs cramps, palpitations, nervousness, not sleeping at night.
For the last year and a half I wondered what the leg cramps were about; why I wasn't sleeping soundly at night (I thought it was pre menopause); all these different palpitations at various times; waking up in the morning feeling a "heavy" feeling. I also developed diabetes during this time. I really believe the Serevent in the Advair was doing a number on me.
I wrote to the FDA regarding this. On March 6, 2006 the FDA put out a new warning regarding Advair and Serevent (it's on the internet).
I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND ANOTHER ALTERNATIVE TO TAKING ADVAIR OR SEREVENT. BUT SEE YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE STOPPING SO THAT HE CAN PUT YOU ON ANOTHER TYPE OF ASTHMA MED. AND CHECK THE PRESCRIBING INFORMATION!!!

Been on advair for 1 1/2 years always had muscle cramps especially in feet and legs - leaped out of bed at night because they were sooooo bad. On each leg they were so bad the cramp indented my calf muscle and tore blood vessels and my legs were purple for about two weeks. I did not know it was Advair until.... February 28th sitting at my desk at work my heart went out of whack 160 beats a minutes...ambulance called...hospital ER doctor told me I had SVT (supraventricular tacycardia) told me to get off the Advair...scary situation...I reported it to the FDA (it is the serevent aspect of the medication that does this). Am now on Qvar.
My sister has also been taken off of Advair. I would recommend to anyone taking Advair to stop.

The pediatritian put my 9 year old daughter on Advair 2 weeks ago when her asthma was so bad she could barely function. She took 4 days of prednesone and started on a month's course of Advair. She is now complaining of sore throat and some other vague symptoms (could be some winter ill) and for the last 2 days her legs have been so sore it hurts her to walk. Thankfully, she can breathe now, but I plan to stop the Advair until we can get in with our pediatric allergist.

Been on 250/50 for 3 years. Never thought about Advair until I read the comments on this site. I have pain down both legs and foot, seems like it's my bones that hurt, also my foot swells and doctors not sure why. Hoarsness quite often that I thought was post nasal drip. Need Advair for my asthma but would love to go off it for few weeks to see if things are different after reading this comments.

I have been taking advair 500 for over a year, breathing better than ever. In the last month, I have developed severe muscle cramps in my legs that are incapcitating as well as gained weight. I did not have problems with advair until now. The leg cramps are so severe I had to be rescued from a swimming pool. Also, the muscle cramps have on two recent occasions resulted in a painful injury to my legs.
I take advair 500 twice a day. I read in the insert from the pharmacy that if you have been taking corticosteroids for a long time you need to be careful about stopping them cold turkey--it is dangerous.
I am glad I ran across this site and confirmed my suspicion about the leg cramps. I will call my allergist Monday and see what she recommends.

Are these advair side effects temporary or permanent? I have taken advair for 4-6 months usually taking it only once a day. I never felt like it helped me out. I started having chest discomfort, rapid heart rate, pounding chest (as if my heart woud explode), tingling and numness, tremors in my arms , legs and chest, restlesness at night, my blood pressure increased, fatigue and weakness. I have not taken it for 8 months but still have re occuring symptoms. Will this ever go away. I have lost my confidence in our doctors. I have read not to just stop taking advair, why is this?

I have been on Advair 500/50 for 2 years taking 1 puff twice daily. I have had these side effects:
weight gain
dry skin
itchy skin
pain in muscles and joints, mostly legs
thin skin on arms
bleeding problems/ clotting disorder
rapid heart beat
thinning hair
difficulty sleeping
thirsty throughout the night
dental problems
water retention
heartburn
I hate taking this drug but it does help keep my COPD(emphysema) under control. I get depressed at times due the side effects of this drug and the impact it has on my life and how I feel about myself. I often think of just stopping the drug and seeing how I feel but I am afraid to.

I've had asthma virtually all of my life. I'm 34 yrs. old now. I've had allergy shots (they did nothing). I used to take Theo-Dur (Theophylline). I've tried Serervent (didn't work). But Advair has really improved my asthma symptoms. Before Advair I was using Albuterol 10x per day. I'd wake up during the night and take a shot of Albuterol. It was not a good situation.
I've been on Advair for about 3 years now. I was prescribed the 250 dosage, but I take it only once a day in the morning. The asthma is the best it's ever been.
I've noticed a lot of the side effects that many of you have. Some of the stuff is easy enough to live with. I can deal with the occasional soar on my tongue / throat. I can tolerate a scratchy voice every now and then. But there are other issues that I now attribute to Advair that I can't continue to live with.
My back ache is awful. I cannot get comfortable at all. It even hurts when I'm laying in bed trying to fall asleep. I've gained weight too -- about 40 lbs. I'm 6'1" and 215 lbs. I was 180 in my beer drinking days. I'm not all that active, and maybe metabolism does slow with age ... but I'm not eating any more than before starting Advair. If it was just the weight, I'd blame myself and work out more.
The most significant change I've noticed was swelling of the lower legs. My shins would feel like they were full of fluid and they were tender to the touch. The medical term in Edema, and I saw a doctor about the Edema because it can be a sign of heart problems, etc. All tests came back as normal.
Now -- with the back pain and the edema and the weight gain -- all the doctors said the same thing. "Lose some weight". It makes sense, right? Less weight = less stress on your back & less stress on your legs. But I am thinking that the Advair is responsible. What can I do?
I'm not medical scholar, but I am pretty observant. I've experience the ballooning effects of Prednisone as a kid. I've see Jerry Lewis recently on TV all puffed up from the steroids he's taking. I've seen athletes transform themelves from lanky and athletic to puffy and muscleboud -- as a result of steroid use. And while it's a different type of steroid -- how much of the "bulking up" can be attributed to the medication?
Another symptom I have is slow recovery from workouts. When I lift weight (for toning - not for bulk), it takes me 3-4 days for my muscles to recovery. It used to take only 1 day.
I don't know what to do. I feel like I need the Advair to breathe properly, but it's making me very uncomfortable in so many other areas. I'd love to stop taking it and see if the side effects go away, but quiting a steroidal medication like Advair isn't supposed to be done "cold turkey".
Suggestions?

I am absolutely relieved to find this website and all these side-effects you won't readily find on www.advair.com. A couple months ago I went to see a pulmonary specialist after having recurrent bronchitis for the last 4 years. He prescribed a nasal spray (I don't have the name in front of me..) to take for one month, and gave me a 28-dose Advair Diskus 250/50 with the instruction that I should start taking it IF I feel symptoms of bronchitis coming on and then take 2 puffs/day. On 01/15/04 I started taking Advair (today is 01/28/04) and either yesterday or the day before I felt I had to blow my nose and when I did, the tissue was covered with blood. Since then I've had 3 or 4 more nosebleeds. (Before Advair I think I've had maybe 5 nosebleeds in my whole life.) I called Advair's "if you experience problems.."-number (888.825.5249) and they told me that either 3 or 4% of people in clinical trials experienced nosebleeds / epistaxis. Right now I'm awaiting my doctor's recommendation as to whether the benefits outweigh the side-effects. I've also felt tightness in my legs and my skin has felt very dry the last few days. So depending on what my doctor tells me this afternoon, I think I'm done with Diskus.

hi everyone,
I want to thank everyone on this site. I thought I was going crazy.
It is pretty bad when you think you can trust a drug to help you and even though it does some of the oppisite.
Had two kids, became asthmactic from weight gain, put on flovent, then lost weight 54lbs. then got pregnant again and the asthma came back but stronger so my Dr. put me on Advair.
I am 5 feet 8 inches 227lbs. and as long as I am that heavy I can't breath right.
tried exercising. paid $ 8000.00 for tummy procedure. Went from 213lbs to 206lbs in one hour but the next day i gained 10lbs. back and I couldn't understand why but now I do.
I always have sharp pains in my arms and my legs as well asevere headaches.
I am always hungry and my husband always says to me. " you just paid out all that money and you are now eating alot more.
So after awhile i noticed alot of swelling around my face and my tummy more now and my legs.
So I went to my Dr. and told him about this and he put me on fluid pills 1 a day. well that didn't work. so we went up to 2 a day.
Then three on my own. Well be very carful I almost killed myself. I almost suffered cardiac heart failure all because of this avdair and no one not even an Enternal Medicine Dr.
new the advair could have such a bad side effect for swelling.

My 7 year old son took Advair yesterday. I will not give it to him again. After his first dose in the morning, he said that his leg was all tingling. We went to the movies at night, and he could not sit still - head and legs bouncing. After his night time dose when he was sleeping, I went in to check on him. He was soaking wet, and his heart was racing so fast!

My son who will be 11 in 4 days has been on Advair 250 for his asthma since he was 6. He is always complaining that he doesn't feel well but since he has so many different symptoms that he is usuallly ignored. Everything from sore stomachs, sore arms, legs, back and headaches all the time. Also he has a few sores over his body and has had a few of them removed to see what they were but everything came back negative. The main thing we notice about him is his anger and how upset he gets over little things. My son is also on ventolin several times a week and singulair everyday.

I was prescribed advair last week for a breathing problem that my dr could not diagnose. At first i was thrilled to be feeling better but now notice a horrible shaking in my hands and legs as well as nervousness and a general feeling of anxiety.
I also have experienced sleeplessness and leg pain and am going to immediately stop taking this drug.

I have been on 250/.50 for three yrs.now. I have the severe muscle cramps and arthritis in both wrist and an all over aching! I HAVE DEVELOPED CHEST PAINS ALMOST DAILY. I tried to go off the advair on my own, what a big mistake!! I had muscle cramps in both legs , tummy, and arms so severely I ended up in th ER. JUST THIS YEAR; My gallbllader ruptured and had to be removed and a week long stay in the hospital. I honestly believe Advair has caused all my medical problems. I am not sure what to do or take in place of advair. my asthma is under control, but;I am still on advair. I want to goff it again, but;my doctor says absolutely not.. I hate the stuff!!

hello, i an a 62 yr old man. i was prescribed advair 250/50 two weeks ago(3-17-04) for wheezing problems and shortness of breath. after only a week, i started to experiance bad neck pains. muscle spasms in my neck and shoulders that were real bad!(the worst i have ever felt) i had to take pain medications to be able to just hold up my head. also my legs(calves) were so tight i could hardly walk. and my bad joints got even worse. i have had a cough since starting advair. even though i stopped taking advair after only 6 days, but i still have a cough, and a sore neck, though my neck is not as bad as it was. i was never told that this(advair) was a steroid drug. i will never take another dose of this drug. it has made the last two weeks miserable!

I am hoping it is just Advair but I have a gyno appointment tomorrow. I have severe bloating in my adomen without any significant pain. It started a month after starting this Advair and never goes away. It is wrose after eating and I noticed belching which I never had a problem with before unless I have soda. I have dark circles under my eyes which even my husband noticed and a lot of swelling in many areas of my body.
I feel more anxious and have sore throats every morning.
I am going to seek an alternative. Pulmicort gave me a horrible rash on my legs and puffiness so hopefully there is something else I can try. If anyone has any suggestions please help. I used to have a very flat stomach.

Hoarseness, sinus pain, muscle pain esp. in legs, mild hair loss. Also: night sweats (not sure if this is related, but I'm wondering!) I've been on 250/50 for almost two years now.

After taking Advair for 4 months, I felt like a new person. I could breathe for the first time. I slept better. Downside: I walk 30 minutes a day and lift weights and clean 2-3 homes a day. I watch my diet but couldn't figure out why I was the same weight as when I didn't diet or exercise. I have the sore throat if I don't rinse my mouth out well after taking Advair. My legs have managed to shape up from exercise but the stomache won't go away. Vision has gone down hill. I may go off it for a little while to see what happens...I am thrilled to have found this website to know others are going through the same thing!!!

After starting Advair last Nov. I suddenly had so much pain in legs and arms. Difficult to walk or lift anything. This pain continued until spring when I demanded a diagnosis. It was diagnosed as polymyalgia rheumatica. They do not know what causes it. I already had fibromyalgia. After prednisone for one day ALL pain and stiffness disappeared and I need to take prednisone for one year. I noticed others with fibromyalgia had much increased pain after Advair

Started taking advair in March of 2003. Have gained 30+ pounds, constantly clearing throat, Hoarseness of voice with usually no voice at nighttime. Bloated stomach, always hungry, legs ache, dry cough and sore throat. Worked great for asthma, but side effects aren't worth it. Quit taking this week. Going to Dr. to try something else. Any suggestions?

My sun has suffered from three years of age with stomach pain and discomfort uppon eating he is now 12 years old. We have seen many doctors all of whom are very vague. His blood work consistantly comes back with low amylase and lipase. Yet they dont see any need for further investigation. I have been told he has a sensitive stomach. As a mother I see more. I live with him and see him every day. He eats very little, (i think it still hurts) he says he's not in pain anymore. At nine he was still thr...
