I'm a 29-year-old male, and currently taking Amoxicillin for a bladder infection. This is the 4th day taking it (500mg / twice daily). So far, the side effects I've noticed are insomnia, nightmares (when I do fall asleep), gas, and have recently developed this very weak, achey sensation in the front of my shoulders. You when you've been walking or standing so long that your legs ache the next day and they feel worn out? That's the type of weak, achey feeling I can compare the sensation to. And it gets worse when if lay on my sides, so it becomes even more difficult to fall asleep on top of the insomnia. Good news is my bladder infection has seemed to vanish after only the second day of taking Amoxicillin, so I'm thankful for that, as the bladder infection was very painful and discomforting worse than these nagging side effects from Amoxicillin.

My Husband has taken this all his life of course like many of us have as a child and teen. He is now 27 and started this on Tuesday for a sinus/upper resp. infection. Evening of day 1 with first dose and day 2 nothing. Day 3 he started itching and didn't know why. Day 4 lips, hands were swollen. Tongue slightly swollen. Hives started on shoulders and inside of thighs that night. Day 5 swelling down after starting benadryl but hives all over body or rash all day off and on. Day 6 back to the doctor who said that he had an allergic reaction and was now allergic to Penicillin.
Strange but it is true that you can be allergic even after taking it for so many years beforehand.

Two weeks ago I came down with a really bad case of strep throat. It started out with headaches (which I thought were migraines), then I got the sore throat, and by the time I was able to get to the doctor it was very severe and they put me on 875 mg of Amoxicillin twice a day. I started to feel better and the sore throat went away very quickly. I'm generally I very healthy person and have no allergies, so I did not even consider that any adverse side effects were possible for me. However, about 8 days into the 10-day cycle, I came home in the evening and began to change when I noticed red spots on my chest and shoulders. I quickly made the connection and got on Benadryl, but the rash spread quickly. The next morning I woke up with swollen lips and swelling around the eyes, as well as small reddish swollen areas all over my face. By Sunday it had spread to my legs, where it was by far the worst. It is now Wednesday, and it has faded a great deal above the waist, but it looks horrible and discolored from the waist down and my doctor told me it might take "a while" (a week? more?) to clear up completely. I have also noticed that I've been bruising very easily (I have marks all over my shoulder from the strap of my shoulderbag, which is not even very heavy, and I do NOT bruise easily under normal conditions.) It's making me pretty miserable and I can't stop looking at my legs and wondering when they will look normal again.
Also, I got the upset stomach (not too badly though) and a mild yeast infection.
I wish doctors would not be so free and easy will antibiotics.

I was prescribed a 10-day regimen of 500 mg capsules, 3 times/day for a tooth infection. First dose at 9:00 pm last night (Friday). Woke up seven hours later with intense itching back of the neck and inner part of both elbows. No other symptoms. Spreading across shoulders and stomach. I'm taking generic antihistamine and applying calamine lotion. No really relieving the symptoms but I'm hoping they will subside my 9:00 am this morning. I'm glad I don't have to try to work in this condition. No plans to take a second dose.
