Biaxin and night sweats

I saw an elderly ENT who prescribed Biaxin XL 1000mg/once per day for a severe sinus infection of the ethmoid, maxillay and frontal sinuses. I was not getting any better, in fact I was getting worse. I decided to go for a second opinion and learned that Biaxin is not as wide spectrum of an antibiotic as Augmentin is for sinus infections. The key strains of bacteria are not being obliterated from the Biaxin. MDs who prescribe Biaxin are not staying on top of current literature as Biaxin was commonly prescribed in the 1980s and 1990s.

My incredible side effects to Biaxin XL (including not wiping out the bacteria) include: lingering bad bitter taste, night sweats, insomnia, extreme stomach cramping, constant stomach churning (which kept me up at night), terrible diarrhea, nausea. The only plus side is that was more mentally alert.

If your doctor prescribes Biaxin for sinusitis, leave that doctor immediately and seek help from another practitioner who is more current on medications of choice for treatment.

Being a registered nurse, I know that all medications have potential for side effects. And with this type of forum, it is important to know that people who do not have side effects often don't write in BLOGS so there is a very biased view of the totallity of effects. Having said that, I've been on Biaxin XL for 4 days. This medication has really messed with my stomach since day 1. Starting day 2 was the night sweats and vivid nightmares. Nighmares puts it lightly- it was more like night panic. Day 3 started with diarrhea. So now I'm at day 4 with all my sweat, shakes, nausea, cramps, diarrhea and I can't wait to go to bed to have more nightmares. What can happen to me next?

I have been taking Biaxin for seven days. Thank goodness this is my last dose. I've had all the regular symptoms (naseau, upset stomach, diarrhea, metallic taste in mouth morning, noon and night), but I also have noticed a severe break out with acne, night sweats and tiredness. I feel like I can hardly keep my eyes open. I forgot one dose and felt almost like myself again, guess that's what triggered me to finally take the medicine. I will not take this medicine again. I'd rather get a yeast infection from some of the other antibiotics than feel like a walking zombie again. This is some strange stuff. I even quit taking my zoloft while taking this antibiotic thinking it was the interaction of the two drugs, but it didn't help.

I started taking 500 MG Biaxin 3 days ago and I'm going to stop taking it today. I couldn't understand why I had a constant headache, nausea, night sweats and am nervous. I would rather be sick due to my infection than being sick from the medication that is suppose to make me better!

began talking biaxin for bronchitis. 500mg 2 times daily. 1st day pains in my stomach. 2nd day extreme fatigue walking across the room seemed overwhelming. by eve. very depressed.confused mind. night sweats, nightmares never felt this bad in my life. stopped taking on the 3rd day.after 24hrs still felt horrible. so I took activated chacoal 2 caps 2 times a day. By day 3 my mind felt like mine again and my energy is back.only problem is I'm not over the resp. infection but i will never take biaxin again.

Only been on for 5 days. Was just checking the web to see if I was going crazy or if all this stuff is "normal". Taking the Biaxin extended release, for pneumonia. I too have experienced:
- Sleeplessness
- Night sweats
- nightmares (I dread bedtime!)
- Horrible metalic taste (which I think is causing me to clench my teeth and giving me a headache)
- some abominal discomfort
- dizziness,
- physically larthargic, but mentally energized; can't seem to shut my brain off

I took it at night the first three times and then switched to mornings to see if I could sleep any better. It didn't help. The symptoms just last 24 hours now. When I took it at night, I didn't notice side effects so much in the day. But then I was so tired from not sleeping - it's hard to tell what's causing what.

also 12 hours after 2nd pill i felt side effects,very vivid nightmares quite real and extreme,upper ab pain,diarea,metallic taste in mouth,quick to anger mood swings,night sweats.i have been a bouncer for 13 years im lean 225 pds 6 feet tall dont drink smoke or do drugs and the nightmares actually scare me, involving violence,they are also very emotional i cry in them sometimes,involving past and present relationships they are very emotional!!!, but the violence and emotional parts are seperate parts of the dreams, they take turns in the nightmares which make them quite a roller coaster of emotions
