I took Celexa for anxiety for 4 days and felt right out of it, like my mind was running really slow, no concept of time, thumbs had twitching, hands shaking. Very very bad. I discontinued about 6 weeks ago and still have the thumb twitches and hand shaking. I did go on prednisone about 5 days after the Celexa for a month and I am quite sure it contributed to the shakiness too but it is unnerving. I wonder how long before this subsides. Some days it is almost gone nad other days quite bad. The dr says it will take amonth for the prednisone to get out of my system but this whole thing started with the Celexa after the second pill. I will never take another SSRI after the extreme reaction I had, I am sure it works for some and that some need it but for me it was the most awful experience. If I had waited for 6 weeks to let this work I would not be alive.

I took 20 mg generic celexa for a couple years.I had extreme fatigue, hands shaking, weight gain, and thinning hair. The dr said I could get off if I wanted just cold turkey. I have been off several weeks now and the first night or so had those electric shocks in the brain. After that, some migranes with auras (which I used to get years ago), also faint, but pretty constant, thumping in the head, like you can feel your pulse. When I check my blood pressure and pulse, they are okay. Dreams are so real and feelings are more intense. I am not in such a happy-go-lucky mood off the med, but, after seeing the afereffects that these things cause, I'd rather be off them than on. i do worry about the constant faint thumping in the head that I have now.

Hi,

I've been taking Celexa for 3 weeks. The first week I was taking 10mg, then 20mg. After almost 3 weeks, my doctor prescribed me 30mg, because I wasn't really getting better. The first night I took 30 I was fine, but last night, I took it again and had the WORST panic attack ever. I was almost hallucinating. I've had panic attacks during the first week, because I was so scared of the pills, but now I thought I was ok with the idea. So I don't understand why i had such a big attack, when I haven't had one for 2 weeks... all of a sudden. Could it be the bigger dose ? Will I get used to it ? I'm so scared these pills are going to take control of my brain... as soon as I feel the effect too strongly, I tend to panic. Could it be just thtat ? Thanks for your help...

My son is 17 and started Celexa one week ago. He took 5mg for 3 days them 10 mg until today. He is nervous, anxious, nausea, can't sit still, fells like he has to go to the bathroom (no 2 all the time), and is on the verge of a full panic attack. The symptoms are always worse in the morning. He takes the meds in the morning and can't eat or drink because he feels so bad. (I thought eating might help) He has not been eating breakfast or lunch because of it. He stared taking 5mg this morning per the doctors request. Will this help? I would appreciate any input.

I first started on the generic form of celexa(10 mg once a day) a little over one year ago..it was because I was having some mild depression..I also in the past have had some anxiety/panic attack issues. When I first went on it..it kind of scared me because I felt like I was in a fog..felt like i couldn't respond to things in my normal way..However, i did feel like my energy level was better, wasn't flying off the handle the way i used to, my panic/anxiety seems less frequent. Good things to say. I recently decided, however, to come off of it..(under the direction of my Dr.) I just hate the thought of being on med's to help me cope..I have been having a horrible couple weeks since I have been off of it..back to some of my old behaviors..and worse! yelling at my husband and kids for trivial things..feel very angst and ready to tell someone off at any moment..it has been horrible..am hoping this gets better..I hate feeling like this!

I took Lexapro for several years without many side effects. Yawing and sleep problems. Then I had an aortic anysrem and kept taking the Lexapro. Then for money savings I switched to Celexa. I started losing weight, great. Then I start talking like a drunken sailor. I couldn't find any symptoms of speech problems so I figure it was a stoke. MRI says no stoke. I am getting off Celexa and SSRI's all together. I think the panic attacks i was having was my body telling me something was wrong and the doctor and I didn't listen. I just about cost me my life. NO TO CELEXA.

I started at 20mg and it was great, but then doctor said to try 40mg to see if even better, but it wasn't, so back to 20mg. It has been a couple years now. I had to start taking it at night, because I was getting too sleepy while driving to work and back. That made it better. Definitely has helped with emotions, pain in my arm, and small daily headaches. I have gained weight, and can not sit still long-or I get sleepy. I didn't know blurred vision and concentration were side effects, until reading this. I think I may try to go to 10mg. Really, never want to get off of it, because I have lived with IBS my whole life, which is very painful, and makes me have to get to a bathroom quick. Celexa has changed my life in this regard. Now have daily movements that are healthy. No more pain. It has to be the Celexa, because it happened at the same time I started taking it. The doctor says he has had others say it, and it is probably because it calms you down.
Good luck to all of you!

I am bipolar and have ADHD, i started with wellbutrin, then zoloft, and then divalproex sodium. I am now on celexa and clonazepam. The very first day I took celexa I felt wonderful, and now the good feeling wears off in the afternoon, so my doctor upped my dosage 10mg. Some of the symptoms I have read here sound like type 2 diabetes to me, I was just diagnosed with that. Best thing is to no stay on a med that does not make you feel good, by all means go back to your doctor or change doctors, you see doctors are not pharmacists, and we are the guinea pigs until they get it right. Best of wishes to all of you, and take care.

I just recently switched from Divalproex 'Sodium to Celexa, and I take Clonazepam with it. The very first day with celexa I felt wonderful. The Divaproex was giving me rage attacks, and bad ones too. Some of the symptoms you guys have described sounds like symptoms from type 2 diabetes, which I just found out I have. Celexa for me works, I have been on Wellbutrin, Zoloft, and Divalproex. Eventually I hope to be off all the medicine I am on. Weight problem along with all this medicine is a big cause of stress, anxiety, and fatigue. I do have the sexual problem, I have been prescribed Lavitra but have not started taking it yet.

****OKINPA: I can't wait to hear how you're doing with the generic Celexa, because I just started it today. I have noticed a couple side effects: fatigue, shaky hands and sort of "in a fog" but I feel much more relaxed than I did yesterday!! I'm praying to God that this medicine will just be a guide to help me begin the journey of counseling. I am only on 10mg and hope I don't have to increase, just need a little something to calm my nerves so that I can actually make it to the counseling sessions without having a panic attack. I was also prescribed ativan to use as an immediate relief until Celexa kicks in. I take half of the .5mg tablets of the ativan. I HATE taking medicine and any weird change in my body makes me paranoid, so I can't believe I'm actually trying this. BUT, I have to, I'm so sick of being a prisoner in my home.

I've been taking Celexa for about 10 years now...in beginning it was 40mg and it took a good 3 weeks to totally be free of the horrible depression/panic/anxiety attacks that came on me like a flood. I was in bad shape when I finally found out what was wrong with me and I was a total basket case for a month before and 3 weeks after. When the drug took effect slowly I came out of this horrible funk. The side effects mostly were sleepiness, loss of sex drive and sensation like many here are experiencing. Gradually I tapered down to 20mg and now 10mg. I don't take it everyday but about every other day and just enough to keep some in my system so that if I nose dive again I up my dose and it doesn't take as long to feel normal. I don't handle trauma, stress or confrontations well and they have a tendency to make me switch into these nose dives. Celexa and dosage works for ME...I believe each one of us has different chemical structures which is why one pill doesn't work for all of us. I think high dosages tend to make you more "zombie" too. I've tried other types of anti depressants and always come back to Celexa because the side effects aren't anything like the others to me. So, please keep trying different meds to see whats good for YOU. If a doctor gives you a hard time, FIND ANOTHER! I suggest a Psychiatric one too. GP's and OB/GYN's aren't trained enough in this area to really know how to prescribe and help treat this and have a tendency to prescribe what they've been given freebies of. Not all Psych's are good either. Keep trying to find the right one please! I know, I've been there. Above all, pray....it helps. :)

I have been on celexa for about a year and lately I have become very anxious and irritable. I cant stand for anyone to be near me and hate to be around anyone. I feel like I am about to really hurt myself, I have been a cutter and haven't done that in about 6 months but the urge is so strong to cut again, I cant stand it anymore, I have gained a lot of weight, I used to be a size 5 juniors and now I am at about a size 12 womens and it is freaking depressing, I cannot stand this anymore. My therapist has me going back to my doctor on Tuesday to have my meds re evaluated. Something has to change, My life is not my own anymore. I have my mind telling me over and over again that i am not worth the air I breathe.

No horror stories to report. Was on Lexapro 20mg for several years. Am switching to the generic Celexa soon because that is what insurance will pay. I have had weight gain problems with Lexapro, hope that subsides with the Celexa.

At times I did notice "weird sensations" while taking Lexapro. Seemed to come on if I missed taking the med or took it late. Almost like some type of withdrawal symptom. I just work hard at taking it as prescribed. Lexapro worked well for the Panic/Anxiety though. Will let you know how things go with the Celexa in a few weeks.

I just started taking Celexa (generic) a little less than a week ago. My life had slowed down and suddenly I was have huge amounts of anxiety. I remember having anxiety attacks as a child but I think I kept myself overly busy as an adult to deal with it. I got really sacred because it was getting hard to function.

I am finding similar affects. I feel like the anxiety is worse and I am going crazy. I am getting hot flashes or anxiety surges and am having a really hard time sleeping. I start therapy next week and I am hoping everyone is right.. That it takes time for the drug to kick in. I feel at least a little relieved that others are having similar experiences.

i took citalopram for approx. 8 mos, and about 3 wks ago i talked to my doc about getting weaned b/c i want to get pg. she told me to cut them in half and take a 1/2 every day for a week, and then the second week take 1/2 every other day. i finished them last Thursday and for the last wk. i've felt fuzzy and unfocused, and whenever i turn my eyes w/o turning my head i feel like i might pass out. want to cry about EVERYTHING, i thought that would go away when i was weaned b/c i seemed to be doing okay before stopping the pills. also, when i first started taking them i couldn't decide whether to take them in the am or pm b/c shortly after taking it, i would get almost manic, wanting to clean etc, and then after about 2-3 hrs, i was knocked out cold, didn't hear the kids, nothing.

I have never had a problem before with orgasming from masturbation but since I started having sex and taking Yasmin and Celexa it has been hard for me to climax during sexual intercourse, despite becoming close to climax. I have been on Celexa for about 10 months. I have been on Yasmin for a little over a year now and have been experiencing an inability to climax and have noticed a decrease in sex drive within the past two months. Any suggestions??

I've been trying to cut down on my celexa ( although i take the generic citalopram 40 mg) I found that if i came off it too quickly without decreasing the dose in stages (i had tried cutting down to 20mg) my head would become extremely fuzzy, whenever i turned my head or moved it it would feel all tingly and disoriented. I also found it was very hard to concentrate. now that I'm gradually getting off of it i notice that my dreams are very real and vivid and i can no longer tell my dreams from reality. I wake up confused not knowing where or who i am until reality sets in. I was hoping to get off citalopram completely due to the fact that it is not recommended to use when you are considering becoming pregnant due to the impact on the fetus. however, i found that without it i'm very spacey and find it hard to concentrate. I don't know if thats another side effector if thats my anxiety coming back from not taking it...

After 8 months, had to switch from Lexapro to Celexa because of the cost. Hoping it will work just as well.

However, terrible and constant headache, even though switching from almost same drug. Some tooth grinding, too.

Had this headache when beginning Lexapro, and it went away after about 3 weeks. Don't know why it would begin again with the Celexa...and the tooth grinding, geez.

I've only taken (1) celexa that my doc prescribed to me for panic disorder and I already feel exhausted. I had the worst panic attack I have ever had after 30 minutes of taking it. I started yawning like crazy, I became very spaced out and had to go to the bathroom. I had way more energy when I woke up this morning. I'm not taking another one. I called my local nutrition store. They had good suggestions. I'll go see what my alternatives are...something more natural.

I have been on celexa for 4 days I know its not a long enough time for the meds to "kick In" but i am terrified and waiting for something bad to happen. I have struggled with terrible panic attacks since my pregnancy in o6-07 and they have lingered on and gotten worse. I was ok and happy to finally take the initiative to get better, I don't like even taking Tylenol so tis is a big deal for me. I was prescribed 10mg and have been only taking 5 of the 10 to wean myself into this drug.. I wish i could know what to expect and all i feel is nauseous, weird and shaky and last night i couldn't fall back to sleep i felt a lil dizzy is this normal?? I hope i don't have any vision loss also!

I have been on Celexa (citalopram) for about 13 months. I took it at night, starting with 10mg and over time worked up to 60mg which is the max. dose. My doctor switched me to Lexapro and then Cymbalta to see if they worked better, but eventually I ended up back on Celexa, that seemed to be best. I did gain about 35 pounds on it, though and was still going, along with absolutely NO sex drive whatsoever. When my husband could finally coax me into it, I couldn't orgasm at all. I finally begged him to even stop trying, the attempts seemed to annoy me. This wasn't me, so I slowly tried weaning off of it. First down to 40, then 20, then 10.

so here's my question: I've been completely off of it for 3 days now and I'm still feeling dizzy, lightheaded, have indigestion, headaches, etc. The other times I was off of it, I went right on another med, so I didn't seem to notice the side effects. Anyone who has been taken off of Celexa, PLEASE respond and let me know how long these awful effects last? I have a 2 year old I have to care for and she doesn't understand why mommy feels "woozy" all the time.

I was prescribed Celexa for stress/anxiety. I have 3 kids, a husband, and a job as you can imagine life for me is hectic. Before being prescribed Celexa I was not sleeping, having panic attacks, crying on a daily basis, and suffered from mood swings. Since being on the medication, I finally slept for 7 hrs. straight., I haven't not cried, or felt worried. I am no longer irritable and I feel that Celexa was a good choice so far, for me. I must say I do feel a lot more sluggish/drowsy than usual, but I assume that will go away over time, however it is one of the side effects. I believe you have to research any medication that you are prescribed and speak to your physician to choose your best option.

I was prescribed this in addition to my wellbutrin to combat some insomnia and it worked. It was a great sleep aid. The only problem was that I completely lost the ability to orgasm. Im in my early twenties and I'm very sexually active, so this was VERY frustrating to me. It didn't matter how many times I tried, I just couldn't orgasm, not even by masturbating. I was also only taking half a pill at bedtime, so I was shocked that it could be this powerful. My doctor tried giving me some samples of cialis (he said it works in about 40% of women) but that didn't help at all. After just 3 weeks or so, I couldn't take it anymore. It wasn't worth the extra half hour of sleep, because I was so on edge from not being able to have an orgasm. I also had some heartburn in the last week or so I was taking it, which I haven't had since I had a pre-ulcerous stomach lining almost a year ago.

I've been on Celexa for a few years now. I have very mixed feelings about the drug. I experience bouts of dizziness, brief periods of blurred vision, a tendency to fog out, I'm tired more often than I should be. I have a feeling of being numbed. However before celexa I had terrible insomnia, to the point where couldn't work. Tears were pretty much a daily experience. I've had a lot of therapy in the last couple of years or so and I think it's time to start weaning myself of the drug and see if I can face life without it. Stay tuned...

Just discontinued usage of Celexa for anti-anxiety treatment. Dr. is putting me on different meds due to the side effects I experienced. I was on 20mg, and it put my brain in a fog about 5 hours after taking it (not a good place to be for an engineer...). I mean I was just STONED for the next hour, staring into space! I tried to take 10mg, but it couldn't calm me down enough. Taking it at night didn't help either, still felt like I was on the ceiling the next day. Tried to take it every other day, but wound up really paranoid the days I didn't take it. It was like living in a Monty Python sketch where I felt like some giant foot was going to come stomp me into the ground at any minute.

I really need a med that will work quickly and effectively in the morning, and diminishes as the day goes on. Maybe I'll have better luck with something else, this one was too weak in the morning, too strong in the afternoon, withdrawal too terrifying. I didn't experience any other side effects.

i have been on celexa 60 mg . i don't believe that it helps. well my doctor put me on it for depression and anxiety because i have chronic urticaria which is a unknown allergy which causes me to have chronic hives and severe swelling of the hands, feet, fingers etc.my doctor believes that it is caused by stress and if she treat the stress i shouldn't brake out. but she's wrong. Well to get to the point i have been on celexa for about 4 months now. i still brake out with the hives that caused me to get back on the worst drug ever prednisone. but since i've been on celexa i suffer with nervousness, night sweats, shaking, blurriness, and it makes me tired and makes me feel like I'm going crazy. i just stopped taking celexa because i think it is a waste of time and it just gives my doctor something to believe that she has cured my problems with the hives well shes wrong. i have seen over a dozen different doctors and they all told me that they will never find out what is causing me to brake out. but this doctor i have now is determined to prescribe me celexa that does solve any of my problems. celexa sucks

I have been on it for a lil over a week now for anxiety

The 1st day I had a headache I usually never ever get headaches!!
I still have dry mouth
very tired & also YAWNING attacks sounds funny but I'm dead serious It lasts for maybe an hr once in the morn & also once in the late afternoon I'll yawn like 20-30x my jaw even gets tired but I still feel like I have to yawn more :o

don't know if I'll stay on it I'm hoping the longer I'm on the better the S/E's will get?? I'm on 10mg right now it does seem to be helping somewhat for the anxiety though so we'll see?

We laugh about it now, but it was horrible at the time!! My husband was prescribed Celexa for mild depression he was having a few years ago. When they say "may cause sexual side effects' they werent kidding!! Forgive me for being graphic, but there is hardly a better way to describe this... He had no problems becoming aroused and performing. But it was absolutely IMPOSSIBLE for him to orgasm! We could have intercourse for 2 hours straight and nothing would happen! He said he'd feel like he was going to climax at any moment... right on the edge... and right at that moment, he'd lose it! Like someone popped a balloon. So he'd have to start over again and build himself back up, only for it to happen again! It got so bad that he told his doctor he had to stop it! he put him on Wellbutrin instead which was MUCH better!!!

I just started Celexa 2 weeks ago, and so far it is making me very tired. I am taking it for pms symptoms like irritability and anxiety. The first night I took celexa, it made me very sick. I had terrible diarrhea, I was sweating, extremely dizzy, and finally spent about 2 hours vomitting. My doctor then said to take only 1/2 of a pill (10mg) for 3 days with food, and then take the whole pill (20mg) after several days if I can tolerate the 10mg. So now I have been taking the 20mg at night for about 2 weeks, and I haven't felt anything different except that I'm extremely tired all the time. I could literally sleep for 16 hours a day if I could. I usually run in the mornings, but I am too tired for any exercise. I just have no energy, Will this get any better? If I don't get my energy back in the next couple weeks, I am going to stop taking it.

I had nausea at first, but after that subsided, the depression got better. It was the first drug that actually worked for my depression.

I still feel down now and then, but the Celexa really helped me a lot.

I have Bipolar Type II, since I was 12. I'm 52 now. Unmedicated I'm a Rapid Cycler with psychotic depression. I was diagnosed at age 40, after worse and worse symptoms. So I have been on meds since - many different "cocktails" some effective and some not so effective.
My doc added Celexa to the mix a few years ago. It seemed to work well for the depression part of the bipolar, but I had bad ringing in my ears and incredible cravings for carbs. I got used to the ringing, but was very frustrated with the appetite out of control - so guilty!
Then I went on Wellbutrin and it was fantastic. Weaned myself (slow decrease in dosage over a month or so) and my appetite returned to normal so I was very happy.
Those of you who are starting it - don't judge the immediate symptoms - it takes a few weeks for it to settle into your system and be effective.
Those of you who are quitting - do it slowly or you'll have bad symptoms. It's OK to break the pills in half.

I was prescribed this drug and have been taking it for 3 days now. I am taking 20mg and the first time I took it I had the worse panic attack in my life. Second time I took the med I had a a lot of anxiety but then that went away. A while later I felt happy. I was in a really good mod a work but I had some chest pain the lasted all day. then when I got home the pain left for a while. Shortly after eating, the anxiety came back bad. I took some Ativan and the didn't do a thing at all. Which I thought was scary because it usually helps in a few minutes. So it really seemed like I was having a heart attack but I just ended up falling asleep. Nothing happened. The next morning I felt good and decided to take it a third time and I had all the same symptoms I had last night and the Ativan made me fall asleep this time.
