I have had 2 cortizone injections in my neck for pain down my arm caused by pinched nerve. I have had hot flashes since day 1 and they haven't subsided. I have them all day and all night long. I actually think I have them more than I don't. Doctor said that the hotflashes might have at first been caused by the injection but now he says it must be menopausal. To me it seems too coincidental. And my increased appetite is winning the battle. I can't seem to get enough to eat, but it did help my pain.

On Sept. 2, 2009 I had a cortisone shot in my back for L4, L5, C1 disc problems. The shot was painful but brief and I went out of there with no particular symptoms. It was done in a hospital by a neurologist. On Sept. 4th I woke up and the whole room was spinning. I threw up and this continued for awhile. I could hardly stand and went to the hospital emergency room where I spent the next twelve hours getting all kinds of tests. My blood pressure was 185 over 110. Finally, they told me they could find nothing physically wrong and dismissed me with meclizine for dizziness. This is now Oct.27th and I had these vertigo symptoms for seven weeks! I was sent to an ear specialist and underwent vesicular therapy for benign position vertigo several times a week at a rehabilitation center. I had brain MRI and a neck MRA which showed nothing. Last Saturday I passed out for a few seconds. Every medical specialist insists that the Cortisone shot had nothing to do with all this but I am still undiagnosed. Yesterday (Oct. 26th) the dizziness ended (7 weeks). I don't know if it is gone for good. I cannot believe that it is just a coincidence that all this happened two days after the cortizone shot. Does this strike a bell with any of you?

It is wonderful for the pain. I have shoulder arthritis and costochondritis. I get 3 shots a year. One in each shoulder and one in the chest. I get the hot feeling, insomnia, pain worse for about 3 days. Then I get an itchy feeling in my chest like it is healing.

I had 4 injections in my trap muscles of my upper back and then 5 injections a week later (traps and neck area). They worked like a charm to stop the neck and upper back pain. The only side effects I have had are difficulty sleeping and a red hot, flushed face and chest. It has been 4 days since the last injections and my face is still red hot like I have a terrible sunburn. The heat in my face is tremendous, on fire even, but I will trade this for no pain any day!

I had 3 cervical shots the last 5/28/90.I started side effects. Puffy face, night sweats, increased appetite, weight gain, before the 3rd shot but didn't realize it's connections to the shots until after the 3rd shot. Additional effects: indigestion, hormonal changes (my period stopped since the 1st shot and is spotty), and the worst...horrible migraine headaches daily. It has been significantly hurting my life-mostly the headaches. No one has an answer or any help. The doctor who administered the shots has no insight since these headaches are so long lasting. Any one experience these type of effects and can tell me if they have worn off. It has been 6 weeks since the last shot!

I have read the posts below and thank goodness I found this site! I got an injection on Wednesday, 6/17, in my right knee and for the first 24 hours it hurt like heck - more stiff and painful than prior to the injection. On Friday I woke up shaky and started to feel anxious. My face and chest flushed a bright red which lasted all day. Saturday was worse; shaky, heart racing or palpitating, head/neck pressure with headache, hot flashes, nausea and stomach cramping/pain. I even actually had a panic attack (already a predisposition for me). I became uncontrollably weepy and depressed! Today, Sunday, I STILL have major anxiety and headache/pressure. I'm convinced the injection brought all of this on because before this, all I had was knee pain. So, WHEN will these icky symptoms start to subside? I was told the cortisone was good for 4-6 months. I can't live feeling like this everyday for that long!!! Any suggestions or encouragement?

hip bursitis- getting shots every 6 weeks for over a year. Shots are extremely painful.I actually cry while getting it. It hurts that badly. Day of shot-throbbing pain in hip, radiates down leg, fatigue headache.
2nd day- facial flushing, headache, fatigue, slightly lessened pain, knees now swollen
3rd - all symptoms slowly start to subside
My last shot was the worst. Left the Docs and felt soo tired, in pain and upset from how badly it hurt. Drove right up a curb.(im ok) Couldn't wait to get home to sleep. I was worthless to 3 kids until next day, weird, its the first time thats happened.

every time I have a cortisone shot, I get horrible body aches all over in joints and muscles and headache. It happens every time. My grandmother had the same thing. I thought everyone had this. I had the injection in my knee today and then went shopping. 5 hours later, I was aching so bad, I had to go to bed. Tylenol doesn't touch it. I hate cortisone shots. I was really disparate when I agreed to this one. The shot didn't hurt much as they used the freezing thing. The doc is an orthopedic doc and he is good. He replaced my hip and it is wonderful and quicker recovery than my first one on the other side. Next we do the synvisc shots, He already tried the meniscus surgery. We are just trying to postpone replacement as I am only 58.

I have coronary atery disease, have had one drug coated stent in my main atery and am on plavix and asprin. Had a shot of cortisone into my left shoulder yesterday (without lidocaine); pain was immense and was a shock
to my system; Immediately afterwards, I became pale, faint, and broke out
in sweat. Had to lay down on an exam table to keep from passing out. After a few minutes of lying still and being fanned by a nurse, I regained composure to leave. For the remainder of the day, my skin was pale grey, and I generally did not feel well. It was not until later that night, after two our three hours of rest, did i recover. From that point on, I had the typical restless night with limited sleep, and face began to turn red. I have never had a reaction to cortisone, and don't know if that is what occurred, but I would be curious if anyone else has had this same side affect.

I have been getting the cortisone shots on and off for about a year now, basically, whenever my ankle flares up. I had one earlier today (or yesterday as it may be), and now here I am at 2:45 am, deathly tired, but with my mind so active I cannot sleep. I noticed the same thing after an injection a couple of weeks ago. I can't believe I never noticed it before. I have always had the woozy/loopy feeling afterward, afraid to drive home, but thankful I live less than a mile from the doctor's office. This is usually followed by a day of nausea and other side effects. It's weird, though. The websites with info on this drug don't talk about the nausea, the dizziness, the "feeling out of it", the headaches. Only that the pain is worse before it is better (definitely true!). But do the docs not know about this or are they just turning a blind eye? I keep reading that such side effects aren't possible because cortisone occurs naturally in the body. But the stuff they are injecting us with is not produced by ur bodies. It is synthetic, and being that we are not producing the dose naturally, it is very likely overload. So, how can there not be side effects?

Had injection 2 pm today immediately had head spins like I was off my face (I am a 45 yo mum so no drugs here) heart racing very dizzy and hearing was distorted. Told doctor he was not concerned. I have had injections before and have experienced the burning skin sensation rashes and tummy aches and cramps. I try to hold off for months on getting another but the pain in my shoulder is so bad I have to eventually. ATM my shoulder pain has intensified 10 fold although eventually I will be pain free in a week or so this should last up to 3 months. I will be able to sleep better which I desperately need as I shift work and have a young family.

Received my very first Cortisone injection on March 24th,2009. Immediately felt weak and shakey. Anxious. Called MD office and they told me to eat something. This did help for awhile. On March 25th woke up feeling great. No knee pain. Knee stiffness gone. About 24 hours after receiving injection, my face became flaming hot with redness to follow. Some swelling to my left cheek. Anxious. Feeling like I want to cry. Fingers feel strange. Some nausea. Not eating great now. Ears feel plugged. Slight headache. Just took some Benadryl. Am applying ice to my face and lotion to prevent all the dryness from the heat radiating off it!
Don't think I'll be getting a second knee done. I'd rather be in pain. KJ

I have had the SAME EXACT THING!!! The 1st time I had the shots I was at a knee specialist. He stated that it wasn't cortisone but a different med that does the same thing just better for you. Never could pronounce it!!! I started going to my family doctor to get them cause I trust her fully. However I got cortisone shots from her and was okay that evening. Woke up the next day and face was on FIRE, HOT, RED, FLUSHED all the above. BP was 170/102 was ILLLLL to my stomach like in knots and the WORST HEADACHE I have EVER had in my LIFE!!!! I will NEVER EVER do this again its HORRIBLE!!!! I took Benadryl and just knocked my miserable self out. Today is day 3 and I am still red and still major headache!!!!! Your not crazy and your not alone this is from the shots!!!

I've had cortisone injections for my ruptured disk at L5-S1. They have been extremely helpful to me. I don't think I'd be around if they hadn't have helped me like they did. They are my saving grace. Although, it is important to note that not all doctors are the same at giving the shots. The first few I had never worked, then I went to someone else who specializes in the shots and has a great reputation for them and he has helped me every time.
I would always be extra stiff for 2 days to 1 week after a shot, and sometimes it would take me 2-3 weeks to feel the full effects.

Next day felt good, but by the third day i had terrible stomach pains and severe nausea, not able to eat. Stomach felt like it was in a big knot. I feel very restlessness and can feel my heart beating out of my chest. Due for 2nd shot in 3 days..... forget it!

I had an injection into a Bursae about a week and a half ago. My face was hot and bright red for about three days, if i went out in the sun it made it worst almost like i was allergic to the sun. I have had headaches daily, since. Vicodin will not help these headaches, my heartburn was so bad i stopped taking all medicines, birth control, antibiotic, pain meds. My stomach hurt so bad the second night that i could not make a sudden movement. and i couldn't stand straight up. i have been so nauseated, ive thrown up twice, once i was taking a sip of milk to get rid of the side effects and as soon as i swallowed i puked, the second time i just smelled something. i have been bouncing around in the bed all night. and so depressed i need to be committed. my head has hurt so bad many days i don't want to hear my one and a half yr old speak. but i am stay at home mom and i have to do what i have to do. i had told my doctor that i had these effects, but another physician treated me. i told him and he assured me it would be a very small amount. also a my ankles hurt especially, feel like they are gonna snap, as well as all my other joints when i come off of these. someone email me plz *******

Don't think there is anywhere else to put this. Please someone else tell me you know what I am talking about and that I am not crazy! After two years of doctors treating me for muscle issues in my left neck/shoulder area someone finally realized I MRI images were not clear and ordered another. I have Mild Degenerative Disc Disease and three bulgin/herniated discs. C-6, C-7 and T1 (I believe). Anyway, prescribed Predisone and immediately had severe lower back pain. It was almost like back labor or the worst menstrual cycle ever. I stopped taking it for two days, lower back pain went away. I tried taking it again and the same thing happened si I stopped again. Theb I received a total of seven trigger point injections. All but one caused the same awful lower back pain, but went away after a day. I just had my second cervical epidural injection. The first one had the same painful side effects, but again went away after a day. The second one whick I had Monday, September 9, 2008 was the worst yet! Not only did I have excruciating lower back pain but it also moved around to my lower abdomen. Oh gosh labor all over again, but without being pregnant. I have three children so I know what it feels like. I have tried everything including: Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Acetametifen, heat, moist heat, ice packs, hot baths. Pain Specialist doesn't prescribe enough pain meds to make the pan tolerable. So I end up running out 2-3 days early so I can't ask for more. has anyone ever has this side effect form steroids? I so, do you have any other suggestions. Please help, one more injection to go and can't take the pain anymore. My kids need me!

Don't know if it is from cortizone shot but I had a shot a couple of weeks ago. Now the pain in the shoulder is mostly gone. However since then I have had daily pains in left front of my head. The worst problem I am experiencing is the constant severe sweating of my upper body. I have sweat pouring off my head, neck and arms all day long. It gets worse after eating and subsides if I sit very still and relax. As soon as I do anything or eat, it flares up again. could this be from the shot? I also have intermittent nausea and pressure on my chest.

i had a cortisone epidural in my L3/L4 lumbar about 2.5 months ago.
30 seconds after procedure, i had severe dizziness and then fainted. Got up about 15 seconds later, i had no idea what had happened. My heart was racing and I felt out of it. I had the procedure in major hospital in Winston-Salem, NC, and they kept me for observation. I immediately felt different, i felt very anxious, nervous. Blood pressure was high. They admitted me to ER and they observed me for several hours. I had several bad 'panic attacks' where my heart unexplainedly increased to 130-150 bpm standing still. I felt extremely dizzy and light headed. They released me from the hospital and said i had a vasal vago reaction. I thought it was strange as i have had shots before with no problems. (doctor did hit a nerve with needle during procedure, very painful so i thought maybe that contributed to the fainting). For two weeks after the procedure i had trouble sleeping, irritability, nasaeu, stomach pains, bloating, chest pains, heart pounding, headaches, depression, dizziness and light headedness- thought i was dying at times. doctor's put me on a beta blocker to keep my heart rhythms under control. The meds made it even worse. Stayed on for about a month and a half then weened off. Nearly three months later, i still have extreme nervousness ,bloating. All the while doctor's all along said that it couldn't be the cortisone. I have not had any of these issues ever in my life, i knew it was the cortisone shot. This has been one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. Glad to see other people with similar experiences from this drug. I have seen neurologists, and cardiac surgeons, general md's about this and they all couldn't connect the shot to my symptoms. Cardiologist wanted to put me on a calcium channel blocker when i was off beta blockers, if it were there choice they would throw more drugs at it. I don't wish this effect of cortisone on anyone!!!!!!!!!!

Had a cortizone shot in the instep of my foot, which I have had every 7 months or so and been great! This time on June 4th, 2008 had the shot again and walked out and my foot became so swollen and painful...went home and iced it but the swelling did go down some with the ice but then began again when the ice was off. In August, my foot was still somewhat swollen an painful when walking and I also have a torn meniscus in the knee of the same leg as the foot problem. Doctor gave me a shot in the knee but the foot is still swollen and painful...doctor says I have arthritis. Wonder if I need another cortizone shot in the foot?

I had cortisone shots in my feet yesterday and all day I have been very irritable. I am getting frustrated and angry over the stupid little accidents or things my kids do everyday. I know it is wrong to yell but I just feel so pissed off. Could this be a side effect? I had the shots about 2 months ago and I don't remember if I had this experience then or not. I can't say that I did or I would have questioned it then. I am also suffering a terrible headache and my throat feels sore (could be all that yelling). Also having a harder time concentrating.

First signs were needles and pins feeling in cheeks. Later developed abdominal cramps and heartburn. 24 hours later my face is swollen and bright red allover plus upper chest is red. I feel anxious.
Oh well. Hope the cure eventually solves what it was meant to do: Decrease facial swelling.

i got a cortizone shot and it hurt like crazy for about 10 minutes.
20 hours post shot my heart is racing like i was terrified, my knee is swollen, and i am nautious, but the pain is at a minimum. the doctor told me to take it easy though because i still have arthritis. this just lubricates it. but if i exercise too much it could send me right back to square one.

I just had cortisone shots in both shoulders for and a one quick shot in my neck muscle for Rheumatoid Arthritis joint issues. My left back muscle under my shoulder blade spasmed about 10 minutes after the shots and proceeded to affect my lung from breathing. It is 8 hours later and I still have issues with my lung breathing - I hope I can sleep. It feels like I have a pulled muscle in the middle of my chest. Also I just got a cramp in my foot. After taking 1 mg Prednisone daily...and shots every 3 months for the last few year - I have never experience muscle cramps. I have had some heady feelings - but that far outweighs the amazing pain relief from the shots. I would like to find another answer to help my pain than any type of cortisone. I am 37 yr old healthy slim woman (other than arthritis).

had a shot yesterday (26 hours ago) in my hip area. doc said shot did not contain adrenaline as some do. i have mitral valve prolapse problem and was afraid of heart speeding up from shot. thankfully, that has not happened yet. i am curious from all the people that complained of "heart speeding" up, whether they know for a fact if shot contained adrenaline? also the facial flushing and burning eyes started a few hours ago. thought i was developing an infection from the shot but now i read it's a common side effect. no fever. going to sit outside in the cold to try and get some relief... thought everything was okay as i assumed side effects would have hit me immediately if they were going to at all. help!

I am 21 years old.1 year ago I had an ACL transplant. I worked hard to get my knee back to strength. It felt good except slight clicking in my knee near the lateral meniscus. I had a second MRI and it showed the new ACL graph healed proper. My doctor gave me a cortisone shot in my knee where the clicking was to see if maybe it would help. I do a lot of strength training and that week it felt better than ever. I went to play paint ball on the weekend like I always do and after sliding on my knees for a few hours (even with knee pads) it started to hurt worse then ever. Then nest day( witch is now) my knee is swollen and hurts to even walk on it. It hasn't swollen up for over 7 months. I don't know if the cortisone shot was such a good idea.

Had Cortisone shot for left shoulder osteoarthritis. Few hours later pain in left arm began. Next day was worse with excruciating pain in arm when arm muscles used even slightly. 48 hours later, pain subsided; but other side effets still present- hot flashes, increased appetitite, sore throat. One week later still having hot flashes, nausea, and now severe muscle spasms in left leg, muscle weakness and palpitations. Sore throat seems worse also- but no sign of cold symptoms.

I had my two heel injections for plantar fasciitis 36 hours ago. Immediately after the injection I had an intense numbness and tingling in the left foot and leg. Then intense pain in the left foot afterwords lasting a few hours. Approx 20 hours after the injections, I began to get a red, hot , flushed faced, terrible headache, burning, dry eyes, and i felt very hyper like i was on speed or something, like adrenaline was flowing on high, and my heart was pounding. Now, at 36 hours post injection, my face is still flushed and hot, and my headache is still hanging on. My feelings of being on speed and heart pounding have greatly improved but not subsided. My heels, however, are feeling great right now.

Had a cortisone shot in my foot(sesamoids) and I came home with a BIG puffy, swollen aching foot in the sesamoid area and toes. Had that for at least a week. And also a red colored circle (not just a ring but an entire circle) around where the injection took place on the top of my foot. Someone told me it looked like it had burned my skin. After 3 weeks it is still there but the circle is peeling a little. Was flushed and tired. Felt "not right."
Also, the dr. told me not to hyperextend or my bones may break...Greeaaat...
I am considering just dealing with the pain. The pain of the shot was enough to make me not want to do it again (that plus the stupid circle).
Anyone have a circle? I am dying to know what it is.

Had cortisone shot two days later had severe pain in Heart (not chest) lasted no longer then 60 seconds. Pain grew intensity started at 1 and went to about an 8. Thought I was going to dye. Pain was horrible. Went away as fast as it came. About 5 minutes later got in car to go to work 3pm. 5 miles down the rd, arches of both feet started itching and tingling really bad, had to take shore off to itch, fingers then started tingling and itching too. Anus also started itching, thank goodness not bad, had hemmoriods removed two years ago. Made it to work, Caregiver, could not work still itching and tired, head dizzy, weakness, waited two hours before I could drive home. Was ill all weekend, heart started beating irregular, now it is worse. Told Doctor, she said I had anxiety attack and gave me another shot. Heart got worse, swelling of feet and fingers, depression, dizzy, really sad. Christmas time and could not shop because I was too tired and fatiqued. Went into hospital, potassium level low was ok before, irregular heart beat worse, heart hurts all the time, fatiqued all the time, short of breath, dizzy a lot. Cannot do the things I used to do. Cannot sleep on my back, have to sleep in recliner or wedge pillow, cannot stand having weight on my chest especially on my heart. Have to go slow, been 1year 2 months now and doc said it would go away after 7 months, another one of her patients had this happen to him and she said he was better in 7 months. Doctors say I will have to live with it now. I say no.

I had a cortisone shot in my left shoulder this morning and don't have to tell you how painful the shot is and my shoulder is still extremely in pain now. had the high blood pressure and flushing, but added is my numb feeling arm all the way down to my figers tingling. I can grip light objects with my fingers and lift, but as soon as I start to lower them my arm flops straight down. It's now 12 hours later ans my fingers are feeling 50% better. My arm still falls, but at a lower level. I feel a little nausea. I have had shots before and never had a numbing reaction. (2) other areas. This is NOT from sleeping on it. I can't even lay on that side. Only saw one other with tingling fingers side effect. Mine is the full arm. Hope it goes away by tomorrow. Of course this is a weekend. Lucky I'm 62 and no kids to pick up. I am still worried.
