I am so glad I found this posting! Hi everyone my names Vanessa..I am 20 years old and was prescribed doxycycline for mild adult acne in Jan..5 months ago...and never knew how much the side effects change someones lives. Experienced: insomnia, nightmares, hot/cold spells, difficulty breathing, paranoid, swollen face and tongue, crying spells, severe mood swings, inability to concentrate, weakness, fatigue, suicidal, shakiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, irritability, feeling outside of my body.....it wasn't until I started to stop drinking coffee and drinking loads of water and exercising..that I realized it was the doxycycline side effects. I would wake up have a good breakfast....and water....than take the pill and start to get blurred vision...shaky..feel depressed. and confused...than I would start drinking more water and trying to sweat (knowing that water flushes toxins out of your body and sweating) and by 2 ish? the side effects subsided...and I could see clear. Today my first day not taken the pill...and from what I read it takes a few weeks to get it completely out of your system. But I get a kick out of doctors who prescribe all of these medications to people thinking it cures things..not realizing that it really can disrupts someones lives who's sensitive to medication.

Hello, I started taking 100mgs twice a day three weeks ago for severe acne on my back and shoulders. (I am 40 have adult acne or back acne that never goes away) I just wanted to mention though that all of a sudden I noticed DEPRESSION and it took me awhile to realize that the Doxycycline was the only thing that was new. I have had bad depression before and am very familiar with it but it was completely gone. So, I am happy to see that maybe this med has caused others to get depression too. The nausea is nothing compared to mood disorders. My doctor said to stop taking it.

i am amazed that doxycycline has given the SAME EXACT problems to other people. i never had side effects to any medication i ever took up until this point. I was on them for a week and on the 2 final nights I too took them right before sleeping and developed a case of esophigitis. I cant eat or sleep because it feels like i'm swallowing lumps that land in my stomach and burn. Even breathing ends up as burping that feels like its on fire. My throat feels swollen and eating solids is torture. Ive been so depressed over this, it makes me want to cry and not go to work because my head feels like i'm in a cloud. Past 24 hours i developed a fever and pain in the jaw/temple area but that might just be a flu going around. So i called the doctor who prescribed them to me for adult acne and says "you weren't supposed to take them before bed, sounds like you have esophagitis". Nice of him to tell me this prior to starting this medication. Im so worried these have caused permanent damage to my stomach that i'm going to suffer with forever. Have these symptoms gone away for anyone, and what helped you get through it if it has? also, how long? Maalox, Pepcid, and over the counter heartburn remedies dont seem to help. all i know is, doxycycline is the wrost drug ever and needs to be retired ASAP!

I have been on Doxy for about 6 months now to treat adult acne. It works brilliantly for my skin which is why I am hesitant about stopping it, if I do forget to take it for a day or two the oil and spots come back with a vengeance.
I discovered straight away to take it with food, taking it on an empty stomach caused nausea and dizziness, but I don't get this anymore.
The problem now is I find myself feeling more and more depressed, looking back Ive been flat for quite a while now. I seem to pick up every little bug going round and nothing makes me happy anymore.
I thought it was just me, but reading about it here, makes me wonder if its the Doxy??

Been on it for a month for adult acne mild, when took it for first time I felt bad, then researched. you need to EAT EAT EAT and don't take it with milk but have a yogurt in the morning or evening hours after or before the pill
since these meds kill your flora, the probiotic yogurt should help, good luck

I was prescribed Doxycycline by the Student Health Center at my college for alleged Bronchitis. I've been taking 100mg twice daily, and I definitely noticed the intense nausea immediately. I've always had a strong stomach, so I was a bit surprised by how I reacted to it. Luckily no vomiting. But within 2 days, I noticed that my vaginal area was incredibly irritated, itchy, and red. I thought it was just random irritation, but it has persisted for three days, and I finally realized it wasn't a temporary thing. I've never had a yeast infection before, so I spent an afternoon researching them, and was terrified that it was a symptom of an STD (even though I'm well educated on the subject).
In my research, I somehow stumbled upon the name of this drug, and immediately searched for further side effects (since my doctor only told me to take water and food with it, avoid sunlight, and not to lie down within 1/2 an hour of taking it). What do you know, but yay yeast infections.
Basically, I'm furious with my practitioner for not warning me about all of the things I've read on this site. I've stopped taking the medicine and have no problem with dealing with a cough if it means the yeast infection goes away. I'm never taking this drug again.

Prescribed for adult acne problem which started around the age of 40. Had one go at it over the winter and found it very effective in curing my skin. However I am an outside worker all be it in Scotland, with a second go prescribed in June. This was a different experiance all together with I guess the sun. I now have what can only be described as water blisters under the skin on my nose and just below my lower lip line. These can be so sore like as many others have described a burning stinging sensation that can come on for hours and then just go. Although they are noticable on my nose as any alteration in temprature makes them very noticable by a deep redness circling each blister. Have also entered into a very low feeling which could be the start of slight depression although not totaly sure, just always seem to have very low points in my day to day life that I never had before. These blisters are still there and burning even after two weeks of not taking this medication of Doxycycline 50mg capsules. Would appreciate any helpful advice or an idea if the burning blister ever goes away? Thank you.

i took my first dox tablet, 50mg. It is to treat adult acne. i am taking it because i am trying to get pregnant and this pill apparantly does not prevent that. I don't want to get a yeast infection from it because it is an antibiotics. The doctor told me that i wouldn't because it is a low dose. I am still scared. Reading all of these negative side effects that people have experienced makes me very concerned. How do we find out how safe something really is?

I have been taking Doxycycline for about a month now for adult acne. I have pretty fair skin and I live in Florida so I always wear plenty of sunscreen. Since I have been on this medication I have gotten 2 pretty bad sunburns (even though I was wearing 30 SPF sunblock) to the point where my skin has a constant tingly sensation that doesn't go away for a few days. I don't think it's worth it to take this just to treat acne, but at the time it sounded better than Accutane!

On day 5 - 100mg 2x day for moderate adult acne.
Really noticed a decrease in appetite mainly, mild nausea with the AM dose, irritability (maybe more the "out there" feeling), definite .. lethargy/drowsiness. I've been going to bed at 9pm. Heh. Thank goodness I don't have the heartburn a majority of you are talking about :o( Sorry.

I have been taking Doxy off and on for about 3 years to treat mild adult acne (began at 34). When I first began it, my symptoms came under control right away, just taking 100mg once per day (as advised by my doctor, since I am known to have a sensitive stomach).
There was one morning that I got up early for a hair appointment, and took my pill with a glass of water on my way out the door. Bad idea! I felt a cramp on my left side that felt like a pulled stomach muscle, and since I lift weights, I dismissed it as an overworked abdomninal muscle. By the time I arrived home form my hair appointment, two hours later, I was in so much pain, I could barely get out of my car. I staggered to the house, believeing I was having pains associated with a kidney stone. Severe! Ended up being sent to the ER for a CAT scan. They found nothing, and urinalysis showed only signs of dehydration. This has not occurred again, as I am careful to drink lots of water now.
Most recently, I had (under the advice of my dermatologist) weaned myself off by taking it every-other day, then gradually less and less often.
Apparently a monthly hormone surge caused a severe breakout on my forehead, so I began taking the pills twice per day, with a sandwich or something considerable enough to buffer the stomach-upset effects. What I felt was...well, basically over-dosed. "Jittery" as though I'd taken too much of a cold/allergy medication, or had too much espresso. It was very strange, and I kept telling my husband that I just 'didn't feel like myself.'
Then, I felt as if I had a bladder infection, disspite the water I was consuming in great quantites. My regular physician called in a Sulfa medicaion to treat the bladder infection, and I quit the Doxy.
I truly believe the Sulfa is what cleared up the acne, which HAS NOT RETURNED, even a month later. (note: I also use a common brand of 2.5% benzolperoxide lotion; not sure if I can name it exactly in this forum. Lower concentrations are effective and don't make your skin flakey.)
However, for the last 3-4 weeks, a slight tremmor in one or both hands persisted. Since the Sulfa, I have not taken another Doxy, nor will I. If my face breaks out again, I think I'll stick with the Sulfa.
I am now on a mild anti-anxiety medication for the 'jitters' and it seems to be working like magic. But no doctor can explain this to me.
I hope this story offers some insights and help to someone--ANYone--else who has been through a similar ordeal.

I started taking Doxycycline five days ago for adult acne (I'm 30 and experiencing hormonal side effects from coming off DepoProvera after one year). I was prescribed 100 mg twice daily. My evening pill is okay, I take it right before bed. But when I take the pill in the morning, I get absolutely nauseous for about thirty minutes after and it feels as though I swallowed a pill ten times its actual size and it's still stuck in my throat. I haven't thrown up yet, but I've been up to that point for thirty minutes at a time. I'm weighing the benefits and side effects in considering whether or not to continue taking it. I haven't had the nauseau every time I've taken the pill, so I'm trying to drink water and eat to see if that helps. I'm thinking these side effects may subside over time.
Everyone's suggestions were really helpful to me so I wanted to post mine in hopes they will help someone else.

I m currently taking doxycycline for adult acne..I have been on it for approx two months now. I agree that the itching is irratating to say the least but it appears to have stopped now. I have been extremely moody and came on here to do research because i eat everything in my fridge like all day long. Its just this constant feeling of hunger. I am glad to have read that others are experiencing the same things..i thought i was going nuts. I have always been at a stable weight about 100 pounds all of my life (in 30's now) I can't believe the weight i have gained. Its unreal. So im giving it one more month and then thats it. Please let me know if anyone on here has a better suggestion for a medicine for adult cyctic acne......please hurry i am starting to think my lttle doggie would be good with some sauce on the grill....Thanks

I've been on doxycycline for two months now for adult acne. My acne got pretty severe, but has calmed down a lot due to the medication. Originally my doctor prescribed me minocycline, which is in the same family (tetracyclines), because of my hunger with the doxycycline. The minocycline gave me an incredibly bad migraine, the worst in my life. I was unstable, and dizzy. After doing research on the net and talking with the pharmacists I work with ( no, i'm not a pharmacist, i am just a tech) we agreed it was intracranial hypertension and that I needed to stop right away. Being on the doxycycline doesn't give me nearly the headache I had being on the minocycline. I found that when I take the doxycycline before bed OR if I am not upright at least at a 90 degree angle, my esophogus will begin to burn.. I usually fix that with drinking A LOT of cool water and it goes away. My doctor told me to take the doxy twice daily, but I find that taking it once daily does the trick for my acne, it just takes a little longer for it to clear up. I guess I'd rather my acne take longer to clear then to have all the side effects everyone else is having.... which I have experianced. But like I said I take it two hours before bed staying in an upright position with lot's of water at hand... and I'm completely fine.

Wow - I cannot believe what i am reading. I am taking Periostat (2 pills daily each containing 23.08mg Doxycycline hyclate equivalent to 20mg doxycycline) for my teeth and have noticed that at the same time, my adult acne cleared also. However I have felt the following: sudden weakness, light-headedness, nausea, indegestion, shaky hands, stomach cramps, pains in my lower leg, numbness in my right arm from shoulder to hand, itchy eyes, slight pressure behind my eye and even a severe itchy bottom yesterday. Also, I have recently felt like there is something inside my vagina especially when I sit down but I think this couldn't possibly be related could it? There are probably more things but not all at the same time. This has been over a period of three months and I thought I was being a hypochondriac. Could the pills really cause all this?

I am taking this medicine for adult acne. I have been on it for over a week now. I take 100mg twice a day, it once in the morning and once in the evening. In the morning it has me running to the bathroom a million times because I feel as though I'm gonna vomit! I feel nauseus and dizzy for pretty much the rest of the day. In the evening however, it makes me so hungry I want to eat everything in sight!! My acne is already improving but the side effects are horrible!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like crap because of this medicine, I was starting to feel as though my body is going crazy!

I started taking doxycycline just 9 days ago,I couldn't believe it when I read these posts..I am having alot of the same symptoms as the rest of you. I have been getting sick to my stomach, no matter if i take it with food or not...more so if i don't take it with food. I have ringing in my ears..icy/hot flashes, headache and my eyes hurt. I am not sure if this med is worth all these side effects. I am taking it for adult acne. I also noticed that my face is quite red and sore to touch.I will give this med a month or two and if i don't see considerable improvement, i will stop taking it. I feel miserable.

I am taking this medication for adult acne as all other antibiotics have not worked. I have been taking it 2 times per day for about a week. I have major burning sensations in my stomach/esophagus. I have woken up twice during the middle of the night and thrown from the spasms. The second time I vomitted, there was actually blood! And they gave me this wretched medication because they said accutane would be too hard on my system?!?

It is amazing how many people have experienced tightness in the chest, anxiety, and mood swings with this drug. None of this was mentioned by my doctor when he prescribed doxycyline for my adult acne. And I asked him about all of the side effects, as I was very wary about taking the drug to begin with. Until reading this forum, I thought I was going a little crazy. A generally happy, worry-free person, I experienced anxiety, sleeplessness, tightness in the chest, and trouble breathing. I recently quit taking this medication because I believe it was causing my skin to itch like mad. I already feel better mentally and physically. I will look for another solution for my acne and never again take doxycyline. It is very bad.

I have been diagnosed as "adult acne" in the facial area.
I've been taking Doxycycline for 2 weeks and experienced swollen lips at first, but subsided. Low dosage for skin problems. Also bloating, yeast infection, occasional dizziness and flatulence. Have applied a 60+ sun bloc which helps but the sun is my enemy right now. Never having had skin problems in my entire life -- at the age of 80+ - this all seems a bit much. Is this a new drug?
