I was on doxycycline for three months for chronic prostatitis. I had similar bad side effects start last week, nausia, pain in the stomach, weakness in the legs, exhaustion, dizziness, etc... But no depression "yet". I have been off the doxycycline for four days and still having bad symptoms. I read your posts --- Thank you! I have read that doxycyline depletes the body of B vitamins. Many of the symptoms described by many of the posts are similar to depletion of B vitamins. Have any of you been tested for B vitamin depletion?

I was prescribed Doxycycline for chronic prostatitis. I took 100mg. twice per day for 3 months. The doctor told me that he puts men on antibiotics (Bactrim and Ciprofloxacin) for 6 months and longer. I had been on both of those drugs in the past and had depression after taking ciprofloxacin for thirty days. I have not had depression from the doxycyline "yet" but did experience insomnia and minor dizziness off and on for a month before the serious effects hit me. During the course of treatment several times I felt unusual tiredness for a day or two but it would go away and I would feel strong again. One week before I stopped taking the doxycycline the bad effects started. Lower back ache, humming in the head, loud ringing in the ears, mild mental confusion, forgetful, headache, dizziness, lack of appetite, nausea, minor tingling in the upper lip feet and hands, sore anus, minor pain in the throat, unusual tiredness, scratchy eyes (like sand in them), redness of skin, pale hands and feet, joint and muscle pain, tight muscles in legs, bloating, abdominal pain, and blurred vision. I have been off the doxycycline for four days and still have many of the symptoms. I read at ****** that doxycycline depletes the body of B vitamins. The week I stopped taking a multivitamin / mineral pill the symptoms started. I was very cautious about taking the vit. pill four hours after taking the doxycycline throughout the course. I plan to get a blood test to confirm the B vitamin content. I took a vit. pill today and it has helped reduce the insomnia and color of the feet and hands. My question to you all is how long dose it take the body to repair the damage? Thank you for all your posts they give hope of recovery.

I was taking doxycycline for a lesion on my face. I started to have tingling of my feet and fingers but did not associate it with the medication. I only used the doxycycline for two weeks. The tingling in my feet lasted for almost 5 weeks.
Several months later I went on Doxycycline because I thought I had lyme disease. After being on the Doxy for one week I started up with burning sensations of my hands and feet. Puffy, red hands...burning on different parts of my body. My Md said it was anxiety! An immunologist said it was peripheral nueropothy from drinking too much!!! I knew both diagnosis were bogis....then I started to research doxy and came upon this site...thank God. I finished the month of the Doxy. I have been off the med now for two months and the symptoms are finally starting to subside.
I can remember waking up one night and my entire chest felt like it was on fire. Wearing shoes was so painful that I wore slippers to work...I was a burning tingling mess and I am convinced it was the doxycyline.

My side effects (Charles Clark)
3:00pm
It started with diarrhea after a couple days treatment. Then my hand muscles starting to contract on there own. Then I started having high blood pressure up to 212/118 and high heart rate and anxiety beginning to set in. My wife wanted to take me to the hospital but I refused to go (I wish I had. They might have taken me off Doxy then, but no, I was still taking it). I then started having problems breathing (like something was stopping me. Not like hyperventilating). My wife called the doctor and she said to stop the Doxy and come in. At the visit, she gave me meds for high blood pressure and ordered a heart monitor and stress test as she believed my problem was more likely with my heart. I didn't start the blood pressure medications as I needed to have the tests done in a week and a half. I had a panic attack before the stress test. There was a patient there who stated her granddaughter had developed panic attacks after she had taken Doxy for Lymes disease. What a coincidence. That weekend my blood pressure and anxiety increased and my wife called the doctor. They convinced me to start the blood pressure medicine as all of this might be caused by High Blood Pressure. I returned to the doctor 4 days later and she took more blood work as well as tested for Lymes disease again. Everything was normal and NO lymes disease. So what was causing all of these problems. That night when I came home from the Doctors I started feeling like someone just sprayed me like you spray a wasp/bee. I started to shake and twitch inside like I was dying I could feel my stomach convulsing and getting cold. Now at this point I had been off Doxycycline for a few days. My wife called the doctors emergency line and they called in a prescription for Xanex. I took it and it put be out. I woke up the next day feeling like I was on a bad rollercoaster ride going over the edge and trying to climbing out of my skin. I was unable to even take care of myself at this point. I started getting muscle twitches all over my body. I could not control my thoughts and had a hard time talking; my skin was so hypersensitive to the touch or movement. The only way I could deal with it was just lay down and not move. I felt like was going to die. More symptoms came: my middle finger on my left hand went numb; I was so nauseated I had a hard time eating; depression set in with sever panic attacks/anxiety, ears ringing, slight pain in my chest like I was having a heart attack and was becoming bed ridden and afraid of everything at this point. That next week I returned to the doctor and she noted how it seemed a struggle for me to walk into the office. She felt that I should begin meds to decrease the anxiety that was paralyzing me. She suggested seeing a psychiatrist and stated that if I got worse my wife should take me to the emergency and be admitted to the mental health program. So I began to take Paxil as well (I hate medications, but I was desperate). I was terrified that I might have side affects from these meds and I couldn't be alone and I was afraid to go anywhere, afraid I would have an attack or worse, stop breathing all together. I was terrified and my family was getting very worried about me and unsure what to do. Thanks to my best friend, my wife, and my family for taking care of me. If it were not for them, I would not know what to do. My dear mom even came in from Virginia to help take care of me. I can not express my thanks enough to my family! I have been off the drug now for almost seven weeks now and all my side effects are slowly, very slowly, dissipating. How come the Doctors don't know about this? Thank GOD for this site and the ones that took the time to post there experience with this drug! THANKS EVERYONE GOD BLESS YOU!
P.S. please reply on what you did to get rid of the side effects, how long did it take for them to go away and did your Doctor believe that the Doxycycline caused them. because I can't find a Doctor that thinks the Doxycycline can have these side effects.

Thank God for you all that posted! :) I don't feel all alone. I'm usually a healthy, strong guy that rarely complains. I've been on a 100mg 2x a day dose of doxy. The first week was ok. just minor stomach nausea. Then i noticed chest tightness, mood changes ( and on the norm im a really passive guy, in a good mood) dizziness, very scary panic attacks(mind racing with negative thoughts), headaches.. Its my 2nd day off of it. Still feeling nausea.. sharp abdomen pains, in and out of depression. I truly hope this thing goes away asap. Never again will i take this med. Very scary times.

Am on my second 3-week course of doxycycline for Lyme disease since the first go round didn't eradicate the infection. Have all the classic side effects mentioned, however the stomach ailments are GREATLY alleviated by taking a strong (70 billion parts per capsule) probiotic. Take it half way between the 2 doxycycline doses and although it isn't magic it does make a difference.
Although I have no appetite, I try to graze lightly on foods that appeal to me throughout the day and that seems to help with many of the horrific side effects.
Also, my MD suggested I take Aleve and NOT Ibuprofen for headaches since the Ibuprofen can cause a "headache" kickback (and causes stomach pain). Don't know if that's true, but the Aleve seems to help a little.
Worst side effects for me are utter exhaustion, dizziness, stomach pain, sore throat, and a head that hurts feels like it is filled with wet cotton. Also heart palpitations which may be part of the Lyme disease.
Hope some of this helps.

This is my second day on Doxycycline.I was prescribed Doxycycline yesterday, for a sinus infection. I am on 100mg BID. my sinus infections are, well, I get on an antibiotic about once a year. This is, I believe the first time I've been on Doxycycline. Yesterday, the pharmacist warned me about being sure to eat with it. I took the pill, but did not eat enough food, and I had nausea. I did eat food with it last night, and did much better. Today I ate food with it, but I do notice that if I don't eat meals, I get very nauseous. Of course, the antibiotic has not kicked in yet. my throat is still sore,I hope it kicks in soon. I tend to rush antibiotics, and I'm a nurse, and know better.

This is odd to read all of these. I'm getting the exact opposite effects. I have a mood disorder which consists of depression and anxiety. I take 5mg Lexapro antidepressant for this. In the past 4 days I've been taking 200mg daily Doxycycline for sinusitis and noticed that I do not feel at all sleepy by bedtime. I notice that I am energetic, a bit too much, during the day, and food does not taste and smell like it usually does. I feel a bit too energetic and even a glass of wine in the evening doesn't seem to help me relax.
I can take this medicine on an empty stomach with no problems. I just noticed that I have lots of energy. I can't complain, as I'm only going to be taking this antibiotic for ten days. I usually have to take a nap in the afternoons on many days. Not anymore.

I took doxycyline for 18 days, 100mg 2x/day for a skin infection. Immediately I realized how rough the drug was on my stomach, but I was able to overcome the nausea, etc. by how much I ate before I took the dose. My infection began healing very soon after starting the drug, and I was happy about that.
The side affects took a while to become apparent. Things started to get strange, little by little. I've never had heartburn until taking this drug. The sun sensitivity was not to be taken lightly. I even got a sunburn on my hands and knuckles. After the burn healed, I thought my hands were tingling as a result, but it seemed odd that they didn't stop. I was irregular and kept thinking that I had gained weight, though the scale showed no gain. All the weight gain issues turned out to be (gas) bloating that ended up being pretty extreme. The dr. said the drug probably attacked the "friendly flora" in my digestive tract. The yeast infection confirmed that theory. I also had moments of complete idiocy - really weird ones unlike anything I could attribute to lack of sleep or other normal causes of confusion. I also felt depressed during the last week on the drug. Because the side effects seemed unrelated to each other and all happened gradually, it took a while to attribute them to the antibiotic.
I finally stopped taking the drug when the syptoms sort of peaked.
I've been off the drug for 5 days, and my digestion is 75% back to normal, with huge doses of simethicon and acidophilous. My yeast infection is gone (post-treatment), and my hands are back to normal. But I am still depressed. The depression seems to have deepened since stopping the drug.
Did any of you have to be treated for your doxycycline-related depression, or did it just pass like the other side effects?

I took Doxycycline for pneumonia that would not go away 100 mg per day. After 4 doses I was struck suddenly with severe chest pain on the left hand side of my chest at the front, down the middle of my chest and on the left hand side of my back and under my shoulder blade. I was admitted to hospital for suspected heart problem. However, after ECG, XRay, blood tests no evidence of a heart problem was found. On release from hospital I checked the patient information leaflet that was supplied with the Doxycyline and it list chest pain as an allergic reaction to the drug. I also experienced a swollen and sore tongue and breathing difficulty which is taking time to go.

I was on Doxycyline for a rash around my nose. I had taken them for a few days, but only taking one pill instead of 2; mainly because I kept forgetting to take the second one at dinner.
Two nights ago, I took the second one and immediately felt like it was stuck in my esophagus. Two days later, I am still feeling the effects. It was so bad that I didn't eat or drink anything for a day ... even drinking water was painful. It wasn't until today that I realized what the reaction was from, I really thought I was having a heart attack. In addition to the major heart burn I had such a bad head ache. Not to mention I was eating yogurt every day to ward off the possibility of a yest infection; which this medication is also known to cause. I will NEVER take this medication again!

I am also currently taking doxycyline as a preventative measure because my boyfriend had NGU. I am taking 100mg twice daily. I experienced very mild nausea, I felt very bloated and had extreme gas. You just feel very heavy when taking this medication. I felt full all the time and my stomache was semi hard and when I put pressure on it, it caused burping and farting... sorry to be so graphic :)

I was taking doxycyline after an operation to prevent infection. I have experienced severe chest pains which stopped me from eating or drinking. I have been in terrible terrible pain and would not reccomend anyone to take this. It has taken 2 weeks for me to be able to eat or drink without pain. It felt like there was a blockage in my chest and the food and drink was not going down. A terrible indigestion feeling

I have been taking Doxycyline since March for Malaria-living in Africa. At first, I was fine. Now I am experiencing severe consitpation; I get hot inside and feel feverish. Is this normal? I was told there was little to no side effects. So, my choice is chance malaria, or be constipated!
I am opting for the former!

It is amazing how many people have experienced tightness in the chest, anxiety, and mood swings with this drug. None of this was mentioned by my doctor when he prescribed doxycyline for my adult acne. And I asked him about all of the side effects, as I was very wary about taking the drug to begin with. Until reading this forum, I thought I was going a little crazy. A generally happy, worry-free person, I experienced anxiety, sleeplessness, tightness in the chest, and trouble breathing. I recently quit taking this medication because I believe it was causing my skin to itch like mad. I already feel better mentally and physically. I will look for another solution for my acne and never again take doxycyline. It is very bad.

I was put on doxycyline for acne rosacea immediately after my baby was born. I also started using Rosanil, retin-A and Finacea. I started having a skin reaction so I was told to stop the retin-A. It didn't get better so I was then told to stop the Rosanil and Finacea.
I am now only using Cetaphil to wash my face and it is still red, breaking out and itchy. My derm said the antibiotic wouldn't cause those symptoms.
PLEASE HELP! I stopped the doxycyline yesterday and was wondering how long util my face feels better. I've always had minor redness from rosacea but never anything like this. I've been taking benedryl for weeks now.
Please email me if you have any advice or can give me an idea of when this will get better.

Took Doxycyline for possible Lyme. I am bipolar. I had tightness in the face and mild headaches. Ground my teeth a real lot. Worst was I had anxiety/panic attacks so bad I couldn't work. I lost a lot of money because I was afraid to go on a roof that I built. Doxycyline set off my manic episodes with 24 hours.
