i have been taking this medication too for acne. And same thing i feel nauseated and kinda dizzy feel like throwing up.

But i now know after few episodes of it that NEVER take it on empty stomach...make sure you eat something before taking it or eat something straight afterwards if taking on empty stomach.

I used to skip breakfast and take it first thing in morning and i felt real sick but now no more issues after figuring it out !!

I even ate a slice of toast to try to calm my stomach, but nope, still felt sick and I chucked it all up!! Now last night around 9:30 and after dinner I took my first pill and felt absolutely fine?? Im still feeling a little weird right now so not sure if Im gonna continue or not??

I have been having many of the same symptoms while taking Doxycycline for Rosacea. Sweating excessively during the day and night sweats. Aching stomach whether taken on empty stomach or with food. Tightness in chest and feeling of anxiety and very emotional. I think it's the Doxy, I have been tested for hyperthyroid, because the symptoms are similar. This med. makes me feel like I'm going crazy. Has anyone stopped and how long does it take for all symptoms to go away. Has anyone switched to Tetracycline and had no side effects.

Taking this for a sinus infection that wont go away. Waiting for results of cat scan. I have already tried taking Augmentim 3 times didn't work so not doxycline. The first 2 days was awful stomach issues. Burning in my stomach. The paper said take on empty stomach unless you cant take it so I started taking it right after my meal and much better. The nausea and burning and vomitting feeling went away after 3 days. So did the heartburn. But now I am EXTREME dizzy. While driving I feel out of it and tired and when I get home I start feeling the room spin and freak out so I lay down and then I am done for the night because I am just so dizzy and off balance. Today I got dressed for work and I was going to put on some higher shoes and couldn't balance myself so I stuck to flats. I only have 4 more days of this so I think I may stick it out. I just hope the dizziness goes away.

Good grief. No wonder I'm so sick. This is only my third day on this med, and I'm nauseated and having hypoglycemic attacks. My dermatologist told me to take it on an empty stomach twice a day, which is hard for me because I'm hypoglycemic and get really ill when I don't eat.

And now this medication on top of it.

I swear she told me not to eat. I even have literature that she gave me that says "take on empty stomach, either one hour before eating or two hours after eating."

I was diagnosed with the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia.on 6/18/08 the doctor prescribed doxcycl hyc100mg two times daily for 7 days for me and by 6/21/08 I felt miserable and very itchy and red in the vagina and by then I knew it had to be a yeast infection. This was a good drug that worked for me but I wish the doctor would have told me one of the side effects was a yeast infection. I also did take it once on an empty stomach and also felt nausea and dizziness, some diarrhea, and a little stomach pain but when I felt it coming on I ate something immediately. I would advise this drug but take precautions and when taking it.

I have been on Doxy now for about 6 weeks for a couple chronic infections. I have noticed it does make me sick to my stomach when I take it on an empty stomach. Well, about three days ago I started to feel like maybe I was having heartburn but it was a different feeling. I felt like I had food stuck in my esophagus and it hurt right at the end about where the breast bone ends and up in my throat. I felt like it was spasming and the pain would refer to my jaw. I have never had heartburn much and certainly nothing like this. I hurt all day long and the pain was worse when I ate or drank. Of course I was freaking out until I saw on this site that Doxy can cause damage and apparently a lot of pain. I think it was my fault though because I didn't always take it with a full glass of water and I often took it right before I went to bed and sometimes while I was still in bed. No one told me not to lay down after taking it or anything. The only info i got was a little explanation that it can cause an upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting so take it with some food if that occurs. Well, i would definitely recommend taking it with some food an apple or something and not before you go to bed, and drink a lot of water with it!!!
I have a Dr. apt next week but I am going to try not taking it for a few days to see if the pain lessens.

Doxycycline has been helping with me skin BUT it is entirely not worth what it is doing to my mental health. I went to a therapist yesterday because I have been depressed and he told me that I have a Dysthymia, a mild form of depression. I have been taking Doxycycline 50 mg for 9 months. I thought my depression had to do with me being unsatisfied with my life but now I realize that I have been feeling sad and hopeless due to this drug. I have had incidences of crying for small annoyances, like missing a bus. I have stopped taking it for a day now and I can't wait until this stuff gets out of my system. I have had yeast infections as well, that were so mild that it took me this long to realize it. I only got nauseous when I took it on an empty stomach. Be aware that some people have committed suicide because they were depressed, due to the acne medication, Accutane. I’m not a doctor, but it seems that we need to evaluate the possible detrimental effects acne medications could have on us. I will now look into improving my eating habits and hopefully that will help.

This is odd to read all of these. I'm getting the exact opposite effects. I have a mood disorder which consists of depression and anxiety. I take 5mg Lexapro antidepressant for this. In the past 4 days I've been taking 200mg daily Doxycycline for sinusitis and noticed that I do not feel at all sleepy by bedtime. I notice that I am energetic, a bit too much, during the day, and food does not taste and smell like it usually does. I feel a bit too energetic and even a glass of wine in the evening doesn't seem to help me relax.

I can take this medicine on an empty stomach with no problems. I just noticed that I have lots of energy. I can't complain, as I'm only going to be taking this antibiotic for ten days. I usually have to take a nap in the afternoons on many days. Not anymore.

I have been on Doxy for about 6 months now to treat adult acne. It works brilliantly for my skin which is why I am hesitant about stopping it, if I do forget to take it for a day or two the oil and spots come back with a vengeance.
I discovered straight away to take it with food, taking it on an empty stomach caused nausea and dizziness, but I don't get this anymore.
The problem now is I find myself feeling more and more depressed, looking back Ive been flat for quite a while now. I seem to pick up every little bug going round and nothing makes me happy anymore.
I thought it was just me, but reading about it here, makes me wonder if its the Doxy??

I was prescribed doxycycline for an infection in my testicles. After 5 days of taking 2 pills a day, the pain was diminishing and I was feeling better. However, I never took the pills with food, always took on an empty stomach. Everything was OK for those first 5 days. It was the 10th pill I took that I felt bad pain in my stomach and lower esophagus, a burning pain just below my rib cage. I could not hardly eat as the pain was so bad as food reached the end of my esophagus. I have stopped taking the pill and 4 days later each time I eat food as it passes through my esophagus and enters my stomach, I still experience bad pain. Its funny because there is no pain until food has traveled a good ways down.. It feels like doxycline has burned that connection of the esophagus with the stomach. I

Tips while taking this medication:

1. Sit up for at least an hour after taking doxycycline. And always with at least 8oz of water, 16oz is better. This will help with the majority of stomach discomfort. Take on an empty stomach. If you have any nausea, consult with your doctor or pharmacist BEFORE you opt to take this medication with food. DO NOT TAKE WITH MILK (See item 4.)
2. Suncreen is suggested, minimum of SPF 50, your pharmacologist can assist you with the selection during your consult. If they don't voluntarily consult you on this drug, find a new pharmacy. You can get sunburn even in your house depending on the sun's direction. Any stinging on the skin is a good clue to apply sunscreen and move out of the sunlight.
3. Do not take any form of antacid or vitamin within four hours unless directed otherwise.
4. Doxycycline is a tetracycline, therefore avoid dairy products. This includes cheese and yogurt. You can render the medication totally inactive by cosuming dairy. This can result in your infection not being cleared, superinfection or resistant organisms.
5. If you have recently taking a *cillin type antibiotic, be sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take concurrently with these type of antibiotics unless your doctor tells you to do so.

If you develop hives, swelling of the face or throat, shortness of breath contact your doctor or pharmacist right away. These side effects are very rare, but can be serious.

Most side effects from this drug can be avoided by following these simple steps.

I have been taking this for almost 3 months now for Folliculitis. The only major side affects I have noticed is that if I don't eat enough food, I throw up within an hour of taking it. I hate it because I have to eat when I am not hungry! I can't take it with a full stomach or an empty stomach. I have to wait an hour after eating, take the pill and then eat a little something more and drink juice and water. Like someone mentioned, I too threw up in the car. However, I had a plastic newspaper sleeve to use as I was driving 70 MPH down the highway! Anyway, I don't take medications often and have a weak stomach, so I thought it was just me. Glad to hear other people are puking as well!! ha ha. Good thing is, it seems to be working in clearing up my scalp. Hopefully, I will never have to take this again! Good luck to everyone.

I have been taking 100mg twice a day. The instructions say that it works best on an empty stomach so I have been trying to just take it with water.

I take the morning dose at 5:00 am and get very nauseous about 30 minutes later. The feeling usually lasts about an hour. I have tried eating a banana with my morning dose but it didnt really help. If anything it was worse. Tomorrow I am going to try a full breakfast before I take it even though it says that taking it with food makes it less effective.

I have absolutely no issues with my evening dose.

I have been taking this medication for 6 days and the first pill I took it was on an empty stomach and did I regret that. My mouth watered really bad a little later and kept burping then about 5 minutes later I was throwing up it came so fast I had to pull over to do so. I find that it is best to wait for about 1 hr our so after eating and lots of fluids to prevent your mouth from being dry, take my warning and do not take on an empty stomach if you do not want to feel dizzy, nauseated, sick on the stomach and tired.

just wanted to let guest #39730 that I have been on doxycycline 100 mg for a month and I too have missed my period. So you are not alone. I was scared to. I have the nausea if I take it on an empty stomach so I try to wait an hour after I eat to take it. I'll wait two hours if I ate a really big meal.

If taken on an empty stomach or even just before eating, severe nausea occurs. But, if taken after eating, on a full stomach, no side effects at all.

I've been taking Doxycycline 100mg once a day for the past three months for severe acne. I have experienced nausea and have been very close to vomitting when taking the pill on an empty stomach. Taking this pill before bedtime is a big mistake since the onset of stomach pain isn't immediate and usually occurs after 20 minutes or so. I now take the pill in the morning and a banana seems to do the trick for killing my stomach pain. In the past few days I've developed what feels like a stomach ulcer probably as a result of doubling my dosage for acne flare-ups. It causes acute stomach pain that comes in waves every 15 sec. and last for 5 sec. at a time. This pain is very severe. I have also experienced the tingling sensation (needles) in my hands when washing my hands but this happens only occassionly.

I've been prescribed Doxycycline for malaria prevention. Can't take Larium as a major and common side effect is psychotic behavior so this is my only option. Feeling very nauseated within one hour of taking the medicine - if I took it on an empty stomach I would've probably thrown up. And this is only the second day of taking it. =( Heard a lot about different skin reactions which doesn't help as I'm going to Spain in two weeks right after Africa (Guinea) and I still have to take the medicine at that time so what am I gonna do - sit inside all day??? I wish somebody would've warned me or I wouldn't have booked the holiday so close after!!! Haven't had any reactions yet though so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I was prescribed this medication for a "bacterial infection" after seeing a nurse practicioner for the first time in my life. Well, I read the directions and it says that you don't have to take the DOXY with meals... now, every single time I take it... 30mins- 1 hour later, I have to throw up. I take the meds on an empty stomach, but with one full glass of water. So when I throw up, I throw up pure liquids, no food or anything gross like that.. has anyone had the same thing and should I eat first? but if I eat, will that cause me to throw up my food??? I'd prefer throwing up liquids than food! GROSS! HELP ME PLEASE.. I have 5 more days to go to finish this evil medication, but hopefully a helpful one! Thanks guys! GOD BLESS YOU! 07/10/04

Took it for 5 days with no side effects and then today, out of the blue, I took it and became terrible sick to my stomach and then vomited. I believe it was the medication rather than food I'd eaten, because it came on so quickly after I took the pill and subsided as soon as I'd thrown up just a bit. The did forget to take the dose with my lunch today, so I was on a relatively empty stomach.

I was prescribed Doxycycline for a lyme rash and have been on it for 10 days. Nausea the first 2 days if I took it on an empty stomach in the morning, better if I eat breakfast first and then wait an hour. Started getting the pins and needles sensation in both my hands and fingers especially when placed under cold water to wash them on about day 4. I plan to call the doctor to see if I can switch to Amoxicillin.

nausea, vommiting when taken on empty stomach, headache & weird dizziness feeling. Also, very irritable, but thought it was due to PMS - however, I've read that others had irritability too, so I think it's from this EVIL medication, since it seemed worse than my normal monthly crabbiness. Also, I'm taking it to treat acne - & how ironic, it seems to be making my skin worse - breaking out in tiny whiteheads all over my chest, neck & shoulders - ugh! Don't know what I'm going to do now! Should I stop taking it, or will these little pimples subside?
