I was about 1 month in to my 3 month cycle of taking doxycycline for blepharitis issues when I started having symptoms. It started on a friday night with extreme indigestion. There was a lot of pain in my chest and also into my arm. I was belching and very uncomfortable. Next day I woke up and only had the pain in my arm, belching and pain in my left abdomen under my rib cage.
I thought it was just really bad indigestion from something I ate so I continued with the medicine. Within a few days time I deteriorated more and more. The pain in my abdomen had spread from just being on the left to being left, center and right. I also got random pains all over my body it seemed. This seemed to come and go throughout the day. My vision would blur, I had extreme anxiety and also depression, my arm remained weak and then my legs got weak as well. The fatigue was overwhelming. I'm usually an insomniac who struggles to fall asleep by 1:30. I began to struggle to stay awake until 11. The lymph node in my neck also enlarged, and I began to experience a loss of appetite. I have currently lost 5 pounds in one week. I also always feel dehydrated and in a fog. I went to an urgent care clinic and the doctor really just thought I was crazy from what I could tell.
I stopped taking doxycycline about 5 days ago and the fatigue is slowly letting go(very slowly). The blurred vision has cleared up a bit but still comes and goes. My mood is still very down and I can't help to still feel anxious and can't stop wondering if I have some deadly disease process going on. The heartburn and abdomen pains are also subsiding slowly(I feel a little better each day).
I'm glad I found this website. It's helped me not freak out as much about my symptoms(although I still have my moments). Since I started feeling bad I've convinced myself that I have heart attack symptoms, pulmonary embolism symptoms, symptoms of AIDS and symptoms of lymphoma. It's still hard to not feel like doomsday is upon me but reading that many of you have had similar feelings and side effects makes me feel a little better.
I just hope this clears up soon because I think as long as I feel pain, tired or anything off I will be anxious about it. I have fear of ending up on Mystery Diagnosis lol.

So glad I found this web page! I just finished a 10-day course of Doxycycline 100 mg. twice a day, prescribed by my oral surgeon after a tooth extraction. Around Day 5 or 6 I started getting heartburn that was not easy to get rid of. At the time I did not suspect the Doxy, because I was also taking pain medication, and thought that was the cause. It just occurred to me yesterday that the Doxy might be the problem. I looked on Drugs.com and read up on it, but nowhere in the listed side effects does it mention heartburn, or any of the mood disorders that other people here have experienced. Luckily I finished the pills earlier today, but I have had the heartburn non-stop ever since. So this time I Googled "Doxycycline heartburn", and I got plenty of results. So, it's not an isolated case. The instructions on my pill bottle were to "take it on an empty stomach", and to "not take any antacids, dairy products or iron within 2 hours of taking this drug". It makes me angry that this possibility of severe heartburn is not listed as a possible side effect of this drug. I'm glad I didn't get any mood disorder problems from it, I already take medication for anxiety/depression. Thanks for letting me vent! I'll be telling my pharmacist about this not-uncommon problem.

I had minor surgery the 12th and took my first doxycycline hyclate that evening. Then the morning of the 13th I was able to go to work. I took my second does and that was all it took. My face got very pale except for rosy checks that felt feverish but I had no fever. Very disoriented, unable to focus, dizzy, like a dream state, no appetite, severe heartburn (even with just water), itchiness all over. Mostly my head though. Went right to doctor who checked me out and told me to stop it immediately. I did and went home to bed. I feel better today and am back at work but....my vision is blurry!!!! I have reading glasses that I just got about a month ago and only used them for reading and small print at work. I am sitting here at work and can't see well enough with out them to take them off.

I've been on doxy for about 10 days. I've never had problems with "photosensitivty" when it had been listed as a side effect on other medications. Totally disregarded the warning. I was put on it for some problems that might arise with acne due to a hormonal injection. I was going to the Florida keys in a few days and thought I should go to a tanning bed to get a little color so I wouldn't burn down in the Keys. Within a couple of days my hands began to tingle, burn with warm water, freeze with cool water. It was like my skin was burnt off and my nerve endings were exposed to the elements. While in Florida with my feet and hands in bandages to keep the heat/sun from causing pain I noticed blistering and still have them. I thought I had shingles, even though I had it on both sides of my body! Had an increased heart rate and 2t pitting edema in my feet and calves when flying home and increased itching on feet and hands. Very nervous at this point! I massaged my calves to increase the flow back towards my heart and it seemed to help. I am also experiencing GiI problems as well, severe heartburn and bloating. My son said I looked like I was pregnant! I can't wait to talk to my Dr. tomorrow and will stop taking this medicine. Thanks to all of you for your information. I'm relieved to find out what is causing all of this. I only hope my symptoms will go away sooner than later!

I was recently prescribed Doxy for Lyme disease. From the time I took my first dose until now, 3 days later, I have had horrible cramping. Similar to menstrual cramps, but worse. I also have a constant headache, though I'm not sure if the headache is caused my the meds or the Lyme disease itself. I have found I absolutely can NOT take this medication on an empty stomach. I drink the recommended amount of water and eat a few crackers when I take it. Seems to take the edge off a bit. I currently take a prescription medication for GERD, but I have been having the worst heartburn ever. Not so sure if I will be able to deal with 18 more days on this medication. I will probably call my doctor first thing Monday morning to see what my options are.

Hello, I have never done this before, but after taking Doxy for a long time for lymes disease I have been off of it for a while and some of the lymes symptoms were coming back so I started again on Doxy. I have started having chest pains and a constant headache. I just thought I would look it up and found this site. I am glad to know the chest pains are from the doxy and also the heartburn. I think I will take my chances with the Lymes.

I have been on Doxycycline Hyclate 3 days for sinus infection. Last night when I took the pill I noticed that it seemed like the pill was stuck in my throat. I had a little heartburn also. I took another pill about 2 hours ago & had the same stuck in my throat feel. I now have horrible chest pains, heartburn & rapid heartbeat. Something told me to google it & see if anyone else had the same reaction. I'm so glad I did. I won't be taking anymore of these. I'm just waiting now for it to wear off.

Taking this for a sinus infection that wont go away. Waiting for results of cat scan. I have already tried taking Augmentim 3 times didn't work so not doxycline. The first 2 days was awful stomach issues. Burning in my stomach. The paper said take on empty stomach unless you cant take it so I started taking it right after my meal and much better. The nausea and burning and vomitting feeling went away after 3 days. So did the heartburn. But now I am EXTREME dizzy. While driving I feel out of it and tired and when I get home I start feeling the room spin and freak out so I lay down and then I am done for the night because I am just so dizzy and off balance. Today I got dressed for work and I was going to put on some higher shoes and couldn't balance myself so I stuck to flats. I only have 4 more days of this so I think I may stick it out. I just hope the dizziness goes away.

I have been taking 100 mg Doxy for about 4 weeks, with 2 weeks left to go. I have experienced the sunburn, even with 50 SPF sunblock! I also have had the tingling feeling when I sweat or am exposed to water. I think this tingling is caused by sun exposure, though. I may not look burned but feel it. Right now I feel like I have acid reflux, almost constantly, like there is a tickle in my throat right under my sternum. No heartburn, just a little queasiness. I found out from this website that you shouldn't take it before you go to bed, which I have been doing, so I'll stop that. I've also been trying to take it without food but it causes my stomach to get upset. Is there any food anyone recommends for dealing with this? Does alcohol affect this?

I didn't realize how many problems this med has caused for other people as well. I've been on Minocin for acne and Cipro for prostates in the past and never had any major side effects until taking Doxycycline. I've been on it for two weeks and have two more left for a prostate infection. My latest is an aching pain in my lower legs and tingling in my feet and toes. My main advice for this med would be 1) Take with a decent sized meal and 2) DO NOT lie down for at least one hour after taking or it could irritate your esophagus. I took it before bed the first couple of days and had some bad heartburn for a couple of days but it is gone for the most part now. I've also had the tightness in the face, throat, and chest. My advice there is to relax and take some deep breaths to eliminate any anxiety that could make it worse. If it doesn't go away or gets worse and you have trouble breathing or anything like that you may be having an allergic reaction. I'm definitely going to have a talk with my doctor for not warning me about all of these side effects before putting me on this crap for a month.

i am amazed that doxycycline has given the SAME EXACT problems to other people. i never had side effects to any medication i ever took up until this point. I was on them for a week and on the 2 final nights I too took them right before sleeping and developed a case of esophigitis. I cant eat or sleep because it feels like i'm swallowing lumps that land in my stomach and burn. Even breathing ends up as burping that feels like its on fire. My throat feels swollen and eating solids is torture. Ive been so depressed over this, it makes me want to cry and not go to work because my head feels like i'm in a cloud. Past 24 hours i developed a fever and pain in the jaw/temple area but that might just be a flu going around. So i called the doctor who prescribed them to me for adult acne and says "you weren't supposed to take them before bed, sounds like you have esophagitis". Nice of him to tell me this prior to starting this medication. Im so worried these have caused permanent damage to my stomach that i'm going to suffer with forever. Have these symptoms gone away for anyone, and what helped you get through it if it has? also, how long? Maalox, Pepcid, and over the counter heartburn remedies dont seem to help. all i know is, doxycycline is the wrost drug ever and needs to be retired ASAP!

I was prescribed doxycycline for bronchitis/pneumonia and an ear infection. I've been taking 100mg twice a day for four days now. The heartburn started last night, and though I've had mild cases before, this is unbearable. I cough and feel like I'm going to throw up. I drink water, I feel like I'm going to gag. I can stand, I can sit, I can lay down, doesn't matter... feels like I have a rock lodged at the back of my throat and my throat feels scratchy all the way to my sternum. The headaches come and go all day and I feel like I'm in a constant fog. I was told it was not an allergic reaction, but it is a "normal" reaction. I won't take this med again. It isn't worth it.

I started taking Doxycycline on Jan 22, 2007 for Lyme Disease. I usually get nausea and/or vomiting with most antibiotics so I try and take precautions. The first day I took it I had nausea, headache, dizziness and a feeling of being "out of it". by the 3rd day the dizziness and the feeling of being "out of it" was gone but after I took it in the morning within 1/2 hour I started feeling severe esophagus pain. It's not like heartburn because it's right below my rib cage. That night I started noticing feeling like there was a lump in my throat. By the next morning the lump felt like a huge knot. Now, It hurts every time I swallow, the esophagus pain never ends. Last night I spent the night crying feeling like everything was hopeless. I thought it was just because I've been dealing with the pain from Lyme and now the pain from the medicine now that I read this message board, I wonder if the hopeless, despondent feeling is from this medication. I have 2 more weeks on this I don't think I can take it that long. I haven't eaten anything because it hurts to swallow and it burns. I cry all the time. I did not read that depression was a side effect but it seems a lot of people are experiencing the exact same symptoms. I don't know how some people have been on it so long. Just the thought of taking another is depressing me beyond belief.

The night I took the last dose I woke up with severe heartburn, I have never had heartburn before. It lasted a whole day with out letting up its been about three days and now it comes and goes. I can hardly eat because it burns every time I swallow anything. does anyone have some suggestions as to some relief of the heart burn and how long it lasts...I just want to get back to normal

Took it as a precaution for a dental surgery. I wound up having severe reflux (which resulted in throwing up one night) and the most severe heartburn I can imagine. I took it before I went to bed, which I found out is a no no, and was unable to sleep due to the burning in my throat and chest. I haven't taken the pill in over 12 hours and my chest is still burning pretty bad. I usually tolerate medicine very well. I will be asking my doc to take me off of this....

I took 1 pill (100mg) Doxycycline HCl, went to bed, slept very groggy, exhausted. Next day, second pill, 1 hr later feeling nauseated, then severe migraine headache, thew up, felt like in a severe fever. This lasted about 5 hours then reduced to exhaustion, dizziness with some heartburn. It was intolerable. I also felt very depressed and negative.
One website describing a patent for a different formulation of Doxycycline reported that 31% of patients taking this experience nausea and vomiting.
Why is this drug so frequently prescribed?
Stop taking this drug if you have side effects.
After doing a little research it seems that the "Hyclate" formulation has many side effect problems. The other formulations (monohydrate or carrageenan) may be better. The Hyclate formulation is very rapidly absorbed and is acidic and can cause local damage to the stomach or esophagus. Some report these symptoms on this website. Also it seems foolish for this to be in capsule form, since this increases the rapidity of dissolving and probably also local damage. The drug is 'good' in that it stays in your system a long time and brings your body to a high amount of antibiotic rapidly.
I have never had a bad reaction to an antibiotic before. I'm glad this website allows for these reports.

I do not know who you people are, but I feel like I have stumbled onto some help. Please tell me this is not a joke....I am on Doxycline for three days now to treat a sub-clinical suspected infection. I started to feel noticeably flat yesterday, (day two) almost like I was missing a range of emotion. I feel as if someone drugged me wtih some kind of downer. I woke up feeling ok this AM, but have felt worse and worse as the day has gone on. I am in good shape, I am generally an upbeat person, but I feel so profoundly sad, listless, confused, and tired. It as if I am living in a fog, and that every thing requires serious effort. The good news is that I am only on this medication for ten days, I cannot imagine having to take it for longer. Had a little heartburn last evening, but nothing serious. Good luck to all,

I took doxy (100 mg a day) for approximately 12 months as a malaria prophylaxis. I experienced mild heartburn for the first month, vomited a couple of times until I learned I must eat a full meal first, and was very sensitive to the sun. After reading the other posts I now think I also experienced two other side effects: extreme lethargy and dizziness--at the time I thought it was due to African heat.

I took Doxycycline Hyclate one night before going to bed. Big mistake. It was still in my throat when I woke up the next morning. I assumed the pill would eventually go down on its own. Boy was I wrong. The pill was stuck in my throat for approximately 4 days. I finally called a local clinic and one of the nurses told me to take some maalox and drink warm water. The maalox helped the pill go down. I also tried goggling with warm salty water. Then two day later, I had a headache so I took a ibprophin and drunk some apple just about an hour later. I started feeling nausea and I had stomach pains for about 15-20 minutes. All of a sudden, I began to vomit apple juice. I took a nap and when I woke up, I ate lunch and I had no problem eating. I no longer felt the heartburn while eating. I didn't even feel the pill. I am so happy that the pill is gone. I guessing it was the acid that's in apple juice. If anyone is looking for advice on how to make it go down, I'm pretty sure you could skip most of the steps I took and just try drinking the apple juice.

After taking Doxy for only four days I woke up in the middle of the night with major heartburn (something I'd only heard about before!). I stopped it the next day and now two days later still dealing with the same symptom!! I guess I'll try a lower dose later on. Just be warned it's true about eating a LOT with doxy....if you don't you pay the price. Just hope I tolerate this medication next time round as it is currently the only treatment for tropical sprue, a result of a wonderful trip around INDIA!!!

i have been taking doxy for about 3 weeks now. The only side effect i noticed was that i had bad heartburn for 2 days(last week) and now it hurts to swallow food. Almost like when you have food stuck in your throat. It hurts all the way down to my stomach. From what I have been reading, I think it is because of not drinking a full glass of water with the pill. And also taking it at night and then going to bed i guess does not help. So i recommend to all to drink a FULL glass of water and do not take it right before going to bed. Other than that, I have no other side effects and it seems to be helping with my acne problem.

I've been taking Doxy for a week now (100mg 2x daily) for epididomytis. The second day of taking the med I woke up with terrible heartburn. I thought that the med burned a hole in my lower esophagus from from taking the med late the night before. I have had nausia once for a few hours, though the worst side-effect is the terrible chest pain as I swallow or take deep breaths. It feels like I am swallowing a golf ball and it is stuck about 3/4 of the way down. Occasionally it feels like it is trying to come back up. I too have had some excess gas. I hope this stuff really works without causing long term side effects.

Like many others, I am so thrilled to have stumbled upon this site. I've been taking Doxycycline for about a month now for rosacea prescribed to me by my dermatologist. A few days ago, I am feeling pain in my throat and chest. I have never had severe heartburn before so I had no idea what I was experiencing - to describe it for you, the sensation was one where every time I ate, I felt that there was something lodged in my throat. The pain is getting worse and worse and then I made the connection with this drug and the possible side-effects. Then I found this web site. You all are right, this drug is EVIL, I'm calling my dr. and dropping this drug immediately. It's not worth it.

I took doxycyline for 18 days, 100mg 2x/day for a skin infection. Immediately I realized how rough the drug was on my stomach, but I was able to overcome the nausea, etc. by how much I ate before I took the dose. My infection began healing very soon after starting the drug, and I was happy about that.
The side affects took a while to become apparent. Things started to get strange, little by little. I've never had heartburn until taking this drug. The sun sensitivity was not to be taken lightly. I even got a sunburn on my hands and knuckles. After the burn healed, I thought my hands were tingling as a result, but it seemed odd that they didn't stop. I was irregular and kept thinking that I had gained weight, though the scale showed no gain. All the weight gain issues turned out to be (gas) bloating that ended up being pretty extreme. The dr. said the drug probably attacked the "friendly flora" in my digestive tract. The yeast infection confirmed that theory. I also had moments of complete idiocy - really weird ones unlike anything I could attribute to lack of sleep or other normal causes of confusion. I also felt depressed during the last week on the drug. Because the side effects seemed unrelated to each other and all happened gradually, it took a while to attribute them to the antibiotic.
I finally stopped taking the drug when the syptoms sort of peaked.
I've been off the drug for 5 days, and my digestion is 75% back to normal, with huge doses of simethicon and acidophilous. My yeast infection is gone (post-treatment), and my hands are back to normal. But I am still depressed. The depression seems to have deepened since stopping the drug.
Did any of you have to be treated for your doxycycline-related depression, or did it just pass like the other side effects?

I have been taking doxycycline for 2 weeks (Malaria prophylaxis) now and have noticed some unfortunate side effects this week. I normally work out and feel great. Last Tuesday and today I felt absolutely wretched after my work out - ESPECIALLY today! I felt like I was having a heart attack. It started out with a bit of nausea and dizziness, light-headedness set in and by the time I got home I was so ill and my arms and legs were tingling all over. I lay down for a while and started to feel better. I still don't feel quite like myself. I've also noticed some heartburn. I had been taking zantac and stopped a couple of days ago - so my guess is I hadn't noticed it before because of this.

On day 5 - 100mg 2x day for moderate adult acne.
Really noticed a decrease in appetite mainly, mild nausea with the AM dose, irritability (maybe more the "out there" feeling), definite .. lethargy/drowsiness. I've been going to bed at 9pm. Heh. Thank goodness I don't have the heartburn a majority of you are talking about :o( Sorry.

As a result of a long time infection that i never knew i had, my doc prescribed doxycycline.
my lord. what a fuss. The first couple of days i was fine. Maybe even a week and a half passed without complaint. Then one night i took the pill before bed, and didn't drink the full glass of water, only about 125 ml.
I woke up with the most severe heartburn that i've ever experienced. I find it hard to eat anything unless i've chewed it into tiny tiny pieces, and even then, i still get a lot of pressure in my chest.
I haven't sleep comfortably in weeks, and now i've started to experience horrible pain in my back as a result.
I have 6 pills left to go; but honestly... how much longer will i experience these symptoms? this sucks.

I was fine on the doxycycline for about a week until one night when I took it without water and immediately went to bed (I didn't read the directions thoroughly and missed the part that said not to lay down 30 minutes after taking it). I woke up in the middle of the night feeling like a pill twice its size was stuck in my throut. The feeling got worse as the days went on, making it hard to swallow. I also had terrible heartburn for about 10 days after. I started taking it again after the symptoms went away and I have been fine since. Make sure you thoroughly read the instructions before taking this or any other drug!

I started taking doxycycline for a simple cold and cough. by the 3 day of taking the medicine, I was feeling extremely dizzy, with headaches, had heartburn, small lumps under the skin around my eyes and over the bridge of my nose. Also tiny bumps that are painful on my tongue. I had nasuea, and stomach ache so bad I quit taking the meds after 5 days. The day after I quit taking them, my stomach is much better and no more heartburn. But still have the lumps under my skin around my eyes and nose and on my tongue.

I am a 29 year old nursing student that bartends on the weekends, I was given this medication by my doctor for an infection on my finger near the nail and on my cutical.
The first day I was on the medication I had swollen hands that felt like little needles were stabbing me all over them, which honestly I could deal with as a side effect. The second day I was vomitting within 45 minutes of taking the medication. The third day was the same, I threw up in the trash can at work. By the fourth day, I experienced the worst pain in my chest I have ever had. Being a nursing student, I seriously considered going to the ER (mind you I have never had heartburn or anything like it). I thne looked up the medication on the web and found this website.
Thank you everyone for shareing your stories with us! I looked up heartburn from some health sites and determined that was the side effect I was experiencing...sever heartburn that made me sleep sitting up, but hey I wasn't dying : )
I have stopped taking this medication and I will be calling my doctor.
Oh yea, I woke up with itchy/blotching skin, everywhere...good times.

i have just come off Doxy after about 4 days with severe heartburn ("im going to die" kind of bad), nausea, loss of appetite, headache, sore eyes, extreme fatigue and weakness, confusion, constipation and stomach cramps (felt as though i was getting my period..badly..)
When i first started taking them i initially noticed a feeling in my throat, somewhat like when you swallow a large pill without water, that didnt go away but proceeded to "move" down my throat for about three days, making swallowing uncomfortable. I then stopped taking them for unassociated reasons (social commitments involving alcohol-antibiotics and alcohol not a good mix) and felt fine. Once i began taking them again the feeling returned and on the third morning (2am) i awoke with incredible heartburn and it all went downhill from there.

This medicine caused an extreme burning feeling under my skin from the face, neck and down my arms. They would turn bright red and I would feel intense burning with sweating. I could not even walk around the house without sweating and turning bright red. It also caused shaking and extreme nervousness. I thought I was dying! On the 3rd night I awoke with the worst heartburn I've ever had. The pain was so bad in the center of my chest, I had to sleep sitting up. It also became to painful to eat. My doctor did not tell me about these side effects and it was only when I found this site that I realized it was the medicine! I stopped it immediately and called my dr. Beware of this medicine!!!!

I took 100mg of Doxycycline twice daily for suspected Epididymitis. The first few days I followed the instuctions and didn't notice any side effects. One night though I woke up with incredibly painful heartburn. I think I may have taken the pill without enough water right before bed. After that I continued to take the pills and the side effects started to become worse. I had headaches, dizziness, loss of appeitite, and painful heartburn. My advice to anyone taking this medicine would be to follow the instructions and not take the pill right before sleeping. It has been two days since I stopped taking Doxycycline and the side effects still have not subsided.

I began taking Doxy last Sunday after being diagnosed with Lyme. LET Me tell you...I thought, I was having a heart attack. I couldnt breathe, it hurt & I mean HURT to swallow-the indigestion was unbearable-then, I took a pill laying down & a quick drink of water (I had fallen asleep & my husband woke me up to take it). Needless to say, I vomited for the next 4 hours. My fault-Ill never make that mistake again....definitely follow instructions! :}
Upon calling my Dr, he switched medications b/c the side effects arent that bad (so he said) They gave me CEFUROXIME 250 Mg 2x a day. The heartburn is gone-and the 24/7 hurting is gone....but I still literally cannot even swallow water without the sensation of a severe heart attack. Doxy was however, MUCH worse....and there doesnt seem to be any other side effects with this meds.
It worth trying!

OK....So I started takin Doxy 4 days ago for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. The day after I started taking it, I started to get really bad heartburn, and my stomach started to hurt like no other. This is still going on on top of being hungry ALL THE TIME, for the first two hours after I wake up, I am always running to the bathroom becuase I feel like I have to vomit, but nothing ever comes up, I am always tired, and I always feel like I have no energy. I thought maybe I was pregnant but all my tests were coming up negative. I started getting really scared so I started to do research...Knowing that I am not the only one who is going through these effects, I know that I am not pregnant. If it gets any worse, I am definately going back to the doctor....

I got Doxycycline from my doctor to treat Rosacea. The first time I took it, I got the most awful heartburn, which I could not treat for 2 hours because of a drug inteaction warning. The second time I took it was this morning and I got so sick, I thought I was going to vomit, something I have not done since I was 12 years old. There is more to this drug than meets the eye, regardless of what doctors say. There has to be an alternative drug. Anybody know of any?

No serious side effects after my 3rd pill of 100mg a piece, but I'd say after 2-3 hours after every pill, I get horrible, horrible heartburn. Drink lots and lots of water throughout the day to quell it.

I have been on Dox for 2 weeks for cystic acne, and for the past 4 days I have experienced a bad case of 'heartburn'. But only when I swallow. A major pain right at the top of my stomach. No headaches though. That seems to be a popular one. I take it at night because otherwise I feel so sick in the morning that I have to go back to bed. I wonder, is this worth it?

Upper GI distress-bloating-loss of appetite-chest pains, very likely stomach related, not heart. Esophageal burning, never any heartburn before. Mood swings, definitely not positive mood! Taking for MRSA sinuses, contracted at workplace after having extensive sinus surgery two years ago. Have taken several rounds doxyclycline, infection always comes back after finishing med two weeks prior. Thank you for your interest.

I am male, 54 years old, do not drink alcohol in any amount or use any form of tobacco, and WAS in very good health until taking doxycycline hyclate on June 13th, 2004. I have used doxycycline hyclate four times since 1979. On June 13, I was prescribed doxycycline hyclate for two small boil-like infections on my forehead. I was not warned about avoiding taking the pill before going to bed and it burned my esophagus terribly. On the 14th I took the second dose and in addition to terrible esophageal spasms and cramps I developed a terrible headache that hurt so bad I could not move, followed a few hours later with the addition to the esophageal spasms, cramps, and violent throbbing headache a case of nausea and vomiting so bad I was regurgitating duodenal contents for hours. This lasted over 24 hours. I knew it was the medicine causing the trouble and did not take another pill. Today is June 16th and my stomach, chest, right lobe of my liver are so sore I can't take a deep breath. My urine is brown but I don't have juandice, yet. All this from two pills. I never had a reaction to this medicine before anything like this, just a little acceptable heartburn. The first time I took it I was 29 years old, I am now 54. With violent reactions like this there should be some kind of pre-screening test developed to prevent doxycycline hyclate sensitive people from going through the pure hell I did for over 24 hours. I hope I don't get exposed to anthrax because I don't want to go through this again! Oh yeah, the two little boils are starting to get better.

I was given 8 capsules of dexycycline, fortunately day 8 is tomorrow. I was fine until yesterday when I had the worst headache I have ever had. Today I have terrible heartburn and stomach pains. Also dhiorrea. I am taking the capsules for a sinusitis infection. This is the second antibiotic the other didn't work, amoxyllyn. I have a hiatus hernia, perhaps that has something to do with the pain in the stomach?

I've been prescribed 100 mg. of Doxycycline Hyclate twice a day for 21 days for Lyme Disease. I was tested to rule that and rheumatoid arthritis out because of hand pain - and I don't know who was more surprised when I tested positive - my doctor or me. Any symptoms I had, including the hand pain, I attributed to the aging process (51/female).
Took the first pill in the later evening on a Friday and waited the 30 minutes before going to bed (instructions said not to lay down for 30 min.). I woke up in the middle of the night with terrible acid reflux, which I've never had. I found it difficult to time taking pill after not eating for 2 hours and waiting 1 hour afterward - never realized how often I ate small snacks. Same thing the next two nights - I also had heartburn, which is rare for me.
I realized it would be far easier if I took the pill immediately after rising and as soon as I came home from work. That has greatly reduced the heartburn and eliminated the acid reflux.
I am fully committed to taking the pill to have the best results in eliminating the bacteria from Lyme Disease, so I'm taking it exactly as prescribed on an empty stomach. This is causing some stomach upset and nausea, which is the worst in the hour after I take the pill while I wait until I can eat - especially in the last 15 minutes, when I feel on the verge of vomiting. I try to keep myself busy, but even without looking a clock, I can tell where I am in the hour. I am hopeful that by taking the meds on an empty stomach, I'll get maximum absorption - but it's been a struggle for me.
One other discovery I've made is that the nausea is less the rest of the day if I eat - and carbs seem to be what is most appealing. I'm far more easily nauseated during the entire day, some days more than others. I feel some fatigue, but nothing that is so severe I'm not able to function and go to work. I feel bloated and my stomach just vaguely hurts, so I'm trying to wear loose clothing.
I'm finding this drug therapy a bit difficult, as I felt pretty well beforehand. My doctor has recommended I give this my best effort, as it is the "go to" drug for Lyme Disease, but has said if I can't handle it, she will give me an alternative. I am trying to stick this out, partly out of determination and silly pride, but also because I am allergic to a lot of drugs and since I seem to be able to tolerate it, albeit with some discomfort, I figure I should suck it up. I have a little bit of the tingling, am occasionally feeling a little flushed - usually when I'm highly nauseated (which is a typical reaction for me), but nothing horribly bothersome.
I'm hoping I don't develop the sleeplessness, anxiety or depression that many of you have reported, as I feel terrible for you. That would become a deal breaker for me.
Unless it's my imagination, my hand pain is reducing and some achiness I just figured was normal has been lessening. If this was the result of Lyme Disease and I can get rid of that, this (hopefully) temporary discomfort will be worth it. Good luck to all.
