Oh my....... I have found people with the same symptoms, I feel normal now. I have been in and out of the hospital taking many different antibiotics. It started with strep throat, so they gave me erythromycin, and it lead me to pneumonia, and a big drop in my oxygen levels. They ended up admitting me and had me on a ventilator overnight, they gave me intense antibiotics of Clindamycin, which helped me somewhat, I now am out of the hospital and they switched me to Doxycycline for bronchitis, and Iv'e been having major hormone problems, heartburn, dizziness, hot flashes, I feel like I am out of my own body. I looked up on web md the side effects of this medication and none of these are included, then I came upon this site, and most of you are experiencing the same thing that I am.

But i now know after few episodes of it that NEVER take it on empty stomach...make sure you eat something before taking it or eat something straight afterwards if taking on empty stomach.
I used to skip breakfast and take it first thing in morning and i felt real sick but now no more issues after figuring it out !!

I have a pretty severe form of cystic acne which I had a 9-month treatment for when i was 16. It went away completely after a course of accutane up until about 5 months ago when i started smoking cigarettes for the first time. within a few days, i had full blown acne again around my mouth. i'm 23 and its been literally six years of perfect skin i didn't even have to think about. i didn't realize it was the smoking until a month and a half ago. so i stopped, and the acne cut down drastically but not completely, so i went to the dermatologist for medication.
i was given doxycycline, 100mg twice a day. ive been taking it for a month and my skin is back to perfect however I feel like i'm forever feverish, i get extremely nauseated if i don't even enough to eat when i take it, and i get insane hot flashes within 30 mins of taking it. i'm basically sweating nonstop all day long everyday. i want to stop taking it but i don't want the acne to return. i cut down to one pill a day and already see some acne returning. i'm so glad i found this site -- none of the side effects ive seen listed include hot flashes or constant sweating. i also have pretty intense lower back pains

I was prescribed Doxycycline 1 dose twice a day for 2 weeks because of my lyme disease diagnosis. I am now at the end of the 2 weeks. For the first 9 days I felt pretty good. Lyme Disease symptoms were almost gone and my energy was very high. Now I am in a zoned out haze and I urinate like crazy. Whatever I drink just runs right through me. I feel tired and kind of achy. The craziest thing is the frequent urinating. I suppose I could have a urinary tract infection. This medication is messed up.

I don't know if this is a side effect of this medication but the right side of my throat is very sore.
I forgot about the sun exposure warning and was working in the sun all day yesterday. After only 30 minutes my skin was on fire! I ended up with a really bad sunburn. I work in the sun all the time and never burn, my skin is pretty tan. Take that warning serious, AVOID the sun! I'm in a lot of pain, especially my lips!

I started this antibiotic because of symptoms my ER physician thought paralleled those of lyme disease... At first I had mild to severe nausea... which was assisted with the intake of a meal or snack. Those symptoms I could deal with... that and a wonderful yeast infection that occurred around the fifth day. The side affects that became unruly, were those of confusion, panic, paranoia (I became extremely jealous/thought my partner wanted to leave me/ and felt un-trusting of just about anyone near - people mocking me, wanting to avoid me, unloved me), and had random bouts of crying - which affected my libido tremendously.... one moment I was in the mood.. the next I wanted to be held in a fetal position and cry. I finished the 14 day regiment about three days ago, however I still have some side effects remaining... I still have panicky thoughts.. almost flash backs of past anxieties... as though I am relieving them again... and paranoia... that people are talking about me, or scheming. I can understand these behaviors if they were pertinently normal.. and a justified part of my general existence... however, I am generally a stable, upbeat and cheerful individual with normal reactions to stress... being that the only time I act reasonably irrational is around my period, where I feel fat and uncomfortable. The panic and rage I felt on this medication was coupled with insane thoughts and neurosis.
I do not recommend this to sensitive individuals.... or any one who is prone to medication side effects.... truly an awful experience... glad there is a support group. Still waiting to return back to normal.

I am 21 years old and was prescribed this medication for "mild acne treatment." I have only been on this medication two days and already I am feel some side effects. My Dermatologist did not explain any side effects to me at all when prescribing this medication and gave me no instructions on even taking the medication. All he said was take one pill twice a day 1/2 hr - 1 hr after eating and thats all. I started feeling some symptoms this morning while at work. I got an upset stomach and started feeling extremely nauseous. I came home from work and immediately went to sleep. When I woke up, I felt even worse. I still feel nauseous and have upset stomach, but now I also have a loss of appetite, im tired, I feel weak and have no desire to do anything. I am debating still continuing this medication, since it is only for an acne treatment. I will probably continue for a few more days and if the side effects still persist, I will discontinue use. I had no idea why I all of a sudden felt this way, so decided to research a little. I am very glad I found this website, or else I would probably be wondering what the heck is going on. Thank you for all the posts about your side effects. Now I am aware of why I am feeling the way I am. Much appreciated...

Hi there - can anyone tell me of any suicides or attempted suicides by people taking this drug. We have just had this happen to a family member and the anxiety/depression symptoms mentioned by many seem to fit his symptoms. He was on Doxy for over 12 months as anti malaria medication
He went from a very capable fit man to a complete wreck.

I was prescribed a 10 day course of Doxycycline Hyclate for a strep infection six days ago. On the third day of my medication treatment, I experienced a feeling of exhaustion. On Day 5, the exhaustion became more severe with a little difficulty breathing and some "pin" like pain near my heart, while at work. I called my hospital and was advised to take an aspirin and to come into urgent care, as long as I deemed that it wasn't an emergency. After arriving at my hospital, I took an Xray, had blood drawn for multiple lab tests, hooked up to an EKG machine, and provided a urine sample. All of the test results thus far were negative. All of the specialists who I encountered while at the hospital conveyed to me that exhaustion isn't a side effect of this medication. After reading everyone else's postings about extreme fatigue being a side effect, I am convinced that it is indeed a side effect. I have got another four days to go on my medication therapy. I guess using my sick leave for the side effect isn't such a negative, as long as this medication cures my strep.

Began taking doxy 6 days ago for infected cut on my face. It worked great on the infection. However, the side effects are killing me. The first 3 days I had sore areas in my mouth, tongue, and one side of my throat, as well as congestion and cold-like symptoms. These are all listed as side effects. Also listed are stomach upset, diarrhea, and muscle aches, which I've had as well. It seems to make my GERD a little worse, but I'm careful not to lie down for an hour after taking it.
While the mouth & throat pain has cleared, the muscle aches are nearly unbearable. About 2 hours after taking the doxy I am almost floored with fatigue. At the same time diarrhea starts and menstrual spotting starts as well. On top of all that I'm finding myself more anxious, depressed, and physically exhausted. It's overwhelming.
My husband took doxy a month ago for epididymitis. He had serious mood issues, upset stomach, and sensitivity to heat as well as sun. He took his pills with food (he wasn't told not to) so his side effects were less severe, but I suspect it's because he wasn't absorbing as much of the medication.

Good grief. No wonder I'm so sick. This is only my third day on this med, and I'm nauseated and having hypoglycemic attacks. My dermatologist told me to take it on an empty stomach twice a day, which is hard for me because I'm hypoglycemic and get really ill when I don't eat.
And now this medication on top of it.
I swear she told me not to eat. I even have literature that she gave me that says "take on empty stomach, either one hour before eating or two hours after eating."

I started taking Doxy 100 mg July 2007 for the first time. At first I didn't link my side effects to the pills but after a break from taking it and started up again I finally out two and two together. First, it upset my stomach BIG time immediately after starting on it. I felt bloated and everything I ate upset my stomach--as the result of this I lost about eight pounds from just not eating anymore. I even went to see a GI doctor about my stomach problems! Who recommended I eat more fiber and get more exercise (I told her about all the meds I was on)! I also got sudden and very severe headaches, but the worst side effect of all is the extreme mood swings I had. I think I was going crazy and this almost ended my marriage...all of a sudden I developed low self esteem, constantly thinking I was worthless, fighting with my husband over the stupidest things and even contemplating suicide during the worst spells. I couldn't figure out why the sudden change- at first I thought it was the tough Chicago winter, since I am originally from a much warmer climate, because by this time I had been on doxy for about five months.
I was prescribed the medication to help clear up moderate acne on my back and my dermatologist gave me the prescription for a year, but never said come see me in a month, two months, etc to see how you;re doing. I am so glad that I stopped taking it in February 2008 --- my moods suddenly got better, I was myself again, I started eating again, my GI problems disappeared...and then...in April I started taking it again because with summer coming up again I wanted my acne to clear up- BIG MISTAKE! Within days of starting again my stomach started being upset all the time regardless of what I ate. After the first month I was feeling depressed again, hating myself and not knowing why--this is when i finally figured it out...and decided to stop...I'd rather have pimples on my back than feel the way this medication make me feel, which is pretty much miserable!

Severe headache, fatigue, diarrhea, and nausea, stomach pain that you wouldn't believe. I have common side-effects to most antibiotics so I wasn't worried at first but now that I have read all these posts I am getting pretty nervous. Last night I was back in the ER for the second time in three days because the lymph nodes and glands in my neck were swollen. The doctor gave me a CT scan and discovered that I had acute bilateral infections in my lymphnodes. An infection that I didn't have before I started taking the medication. This drug is horrible and I don't recommend it to anyone.

I have been taking Doxy since 5/22/08 for mild acne had a couple spots on my shoulders and being the summer season just wanted my clear skin back , just yesterday I've notice my lips very dry and swollen but more so today than before, my hands tingle from lotions or just water kind of like when your foot falls asleep. it's weird, but my skin feels very dry and tight all over not very comfortable I don't think I will continue with the medication I mean I only had a couple bumps now I've got a all kinds of things going on but as I read below I'm not alone. funny thing is the shoulder bumps went away fast but a couple new ones popped up elsewhere go figure right? oh well nothings perfect I guess. I wonder how long before my lips go back to normal.

I took Doxy last summer for cystic acne. It worked fine and I didn't have any problems, and my skin cleared up nicely. I had some left over (bad, bad, I know but it hasn't yet expired!) so I started taking it again about 4 days ago. I noticed, almost immediately, severe tingling and burning in my fingers and hands and up into my arms when I am out in the sun and for hours afterwards. Also water (like washing my hands) makes the tingly feeling much worse. Weird, right? My two index fingers are bright red and any touch burns.
It's weird because last summer when I was on it I was out in the sun all the time with no problems at all.

I had to take Doxycycline for 3 weeks last August when a tick bite I had developed the classic "bulls eye"... a sign of Lyme disease. Everything went well for the first 10 days then I started getting kind of nervous and couldn't sleep well at night. I was constantly starving, really ravenous and had to eat constantly otherwise the nausea got worse. I was glad when I was finally able to stop taking the meds, BUT then after 24 hours I became depressed and really fuzzy in my head and disoriented. This lasted for another 2-4 days. I'm feeling much better now, but I have noticed that I'm just a lot more sensitive to other stimulants...coffee, sugar, alcohol, chocolate. I know I have a few other allergies, hay fever, food allergies etc. I was just wondering, does anyone else out there who has had a negative reaction to doxy have any other allergies or intolerances, or asthma? How much sugar, either in the form of sweets or alcohol do you usually consume? Daily, weekly, monthly...none at all? Feedback would be greatly appreciated. I would like to get to the root of this problem.

I was prescribed doxycycline 2xday for seven days. On the third day I started to feel very sick. However, it was not until the 5th/6th day that I began to suspect I was having a reaction to the antibiotic. I have never had a negative reaction to any medication ever. My symptoms started with severe nausea that lasted all day, and extreme tiredness. The symptoms continued to get worse....muscle aches, joint pains, elevated blood pressure, back & neck pains, unfocused vision, confusion, dizziness, loss of appetite, muscle tremors that woke me from sleep, depression, and anxiety. When I discussed with my doctor that I suspected it might be the medication I was dismissed and told I was developing a virus. They had prescribed this medication often with no problems. I decided to try to stick with it for two more days. That was the biggest mistake ever. I can't really describe what it did to my head, but all I could think about was that I was dying. I guess severe anxiety and paranoia. So, I finally stopped taking it.
It took three full days with no medication for my nausea and mental confusion to begin to subside. It took a few more days for most of the muscle and back pain to go away. It also took about seven days for the depression and most of the anxiety to quiet down. It is now 11 days with no medication and I still have diarrhea, and minor joint pain. I have also stopped drinking coffee because I an still a bit anxious. I have not really gotten back to my routine yet, and will probably hold off going to the gym until next week.
The most frustrating thing of all is that this medication was given to me as a preventative before a small surgery. All the symptoms I was supposed to be watching for I was having. I am sure this contributed to the anxiety.
At least most of the symptoms have gotten better, and I am hopeful that they will continue to improve. I have researched serum sickness and it says it can take 1-2 weeks for symptoms to subside, and up to several months in some cases.
Good luck to everyone.

i have been taking dorxy 100 mg once a day along with a .3% differin cream for mild acne. I have been taking it for about five weeks now. I am twenty years old. At first it only upset my stomach so I took it with food/milk and that helped. But as time progresses, I feel as though my symptoms are getting worse. I constantly have a headache, I am sensitive to sunlight (I do not burn that easily, but bright lights irritate me), loud noises, light headed, sick to my stomach, dizzy, confused. I have severe back pain and pain in my wrists, ankles and especially in my knees. Thankfully my boyfriend has been dealing with what could also be side effects, I easily change moods, I am depressed, I suddenly cry over ridiculous immature situations, I am insecure and refuse to believe anyone that compliments me. I loose my temper easily and never feel like taking part in sexual activity with my boyfriend. I also feel paranoid and worried at times, I feel overly stressed. I do have a lot on my plate with my personal life but I have never acted this way about situations before.
Basically, being happy to crying in half a second, always feeling tired and lazy, no energy, and not being hungry then starving, and feeling sick and dizzy are basically making me wonder if this medicine is worth these side effects. I do not want to risk putting my baby in danger if I ever get pregnant a few years after taking this medication and from what I have read, it could have a life long effect on our bodies.
Although my acne has made me miserable all my life, and seeing the results of it clearing up so quickly makes me SO happy, I am hoping that eventually I will grow out of it. Because in all honesty, we are putting our bodies through so much, all just to have clear skin! Someone out there thinks you are beautiful, regardless of your acne. So I am probably going to talk to my Dr. and discontinue the doryx. I just can't take the side effects any longer. Besides, I read online that in most cases, after you stop taking Dorxy, the acne comes back. Sigh, I don't know guys! This is a tough situation for all of us.
Best of luck, take care everyone. :)

i am amazed that doxycycline has given the SAME EXACT problems to other people. i never had side effects to any medication i ever took up until this point. I was on them for a week and on the 2 final nights I too took them right before sleeping and developed a case of esophigitis. I cant eat or sleep because it feels like i'm swallowing lumps that land in my stomach and burn. Even breathing ends up as burping that feels like its on fire. My throat feels swollen and eating solids is torture. Ive been so depressed over this, it makes me want to cry and not go to work because my head feels like i'm in a cloud. Past 24 hours i developed a fever and pain in the jaw/temple area but that might just be a flu going around. So i called the doctor who prescribed them to me for adult acne and says "you weren't supposed to take them before bed, sounds like you have esophagitis". Nice of him to tell me this prior to starting this medication. Im so worried these have caused permanent damage to my stomach that i'm going to suffer with forever. Have these symptoms gone away for anyone, and what helped you get through it if it has? also, how long? Maalox, Pepcid, and over the counter heartburn remedies dont seem to help. all i know is, doxycycline is the wrost drug ever and needs to be retired ASAP!

I was prescribed doxy as a precaution for a mole removal on Friday, started taking meds on Saturday. I am in day 5 and have noticed that since Day two I have had inexplicable joint and muscle ache and have been so tired for two days that I almost could not bring myself to return to work after lunch today. Normally I am a 4 hour a night sleeper who goes for a 3-4 mile run in the morning and works out with my trainer after a 14 hour work day without getting tired until about 11-11;30 at night. but something is wrong, I have never experienced the exhaustion of today and yesterday. Not even a grande Starbucks coffee, chased by a full shout of 5 hour energy brought reprieve. And I have been weepy and morbidly unhappy for absolutely no reason. Saturday night I heard a song that made me cry and I have never cried over a song. I have been moody and irritable since day one of the medication- without explanation and I took 3-4 hour naps this weekend. after reading other peoples comments I feel like its the meds. I am calling my doctor tomorrow to ask if I can get off the meds and I am not taking them tonight. d

Doxycycline has been helping with me skin BUT it is entirely not worth what it is doing to my mental health. I went to a therapist yesterday because I have been depressed and he told me that I have a Dysthymia, a mild form of depression. I have been taking Doxycycline 50 mg for 9 months. I thought my depression had to do with me being unsatisfied with my life but now I realize that I have been feeling sad and hopeless due to this drug. I have had incidences of crying for small annoyances, like missing a bus. I have stopped taking it for a day now and I can't wait until this stuff gets out of my system. I have had yeast infections as well, that were so mild that it took me this long to realize it. I only got nauseous when I took it on an empty stomach. Be aware that some people have committed suicide because they were depressed, due to the acne medication, Accutane. I’m not a doctor, but it seems that we need to evaluate the possible detrimental effects acne medications could have on us. I will now look into improving my eating habits and hopefully that will help.

I was prescribed this drug as an after operation precaution. I only took the tablets from Thursday- Monday after seeing the posts on this site!
I had been getting what i thought was heartburn on the day after my operation and assumed that the burning in my throat was from the tube placed in my throat during the anaesthetic. How wrong was I! By Monday night I was unable to eat or drink even my own saliva was buring me right down to my Oesophagus. I began to think that this was not normal as my breathing was getting weaker than normal-( i am asthmatic) constantly feeling dizzy, and to feel like someone was pouring acid into me ?? All sent warning signs. So i read the leaflet in the box to see the side effects. Surprise surprise i was getting the severe reactions to the drug. If only i had looked sooner! So i called my local gp first thing Tuesday, who advised i was being silly and that it was not the doxycycline!!! Even though i told him about the side effects. He then told me to continue to take them! Well I was not convinced and contacted the gp that operated on me and he told me to stop taking them immediately due to the severity of the side effects i was having. Its been 4 days now and the most i have managed to consume is 1/4 of a pot of yogurt. I also am a single parent with a 2 year old to look after so I am really struggling with the effects from this drug! I have seen that others are still affect by this for days after they have ceased the treatment. I just hope it calms down soon so that i can eat something. I am terribly drained and in so much pain, not to mention having to put up with the pain from the operation! I would advise that the first signs of discomfort on this drug stop taking it!

My son was taking this medication for about a month and had horrible headaches after taking it. Felt like he was in a fog and vision problems, couldn't concentrate, had to quit driving and going to work. After many visits to the emergency room and many doctors. we found it had burned his stomach. Now he is on Nexium and it is amazing the difference. His headaches are maybe 80% gone. It seems that this medication is bad on the GI track. He took it with food but it just is hard on the body. If your symptoms stay have an endoscopy to see if it has done any harm to your GI track.

I have been having Doxy since last June (about 6 mo. ago) and still taking it. Its effects on my acne problem has just gotten apparent about one month ago. (Yep. For 5 months, I kept my faith and it is beginning to pay off.) I was determined to take the stuff as long as I need to. However, I just noticed that my stomach is bloating and I got tired very easily. I could play several games of rigorous racquetball before but no longer. My breathing has gotten harder and felt like something was obstructing my breathe just below the rib cage (in the middle).
I will see my derm to see if there is any long term problem with this side effect. He once told me I have to take this drug at least 2 months after all the major "bums" have disappeared. I hope that is within the next few weeks.

I started taking Doxycycline on Jan 22, 2007 for Lyme Disease. I usually get nausea and/or vomiting with most antibiotics so I try and take precautions. The first day I took it I had nausea, headache, dizziness and a feeling of being "out of it". by the 3rd day the dizziness and the feeling of being "out of it" was gone but after I took it in the morning within 1/2 hour I started feeling severe esophagus pain. It's not like heartburn because it's right below my rib cage. That night I started noticing feeling like there was a lump in my throat. By the next morning the lump felt like a huge knot. Now, It hurts every time I swallow, the esophagus pain never ends. Last night I spent the night crying feeling like everything was hopeless. I thought it was just because I've been dealing with the pain from Lyme and now the pain from the medicine now that I read this message board, I wonder if the hopeless, despondent feeling is from this medication. I have 2 more weeks on this I don't think I can take it that long. I haven't eaten anything because it hurts to swallow and it burns. I cry all the time. I did not read that depression was a side effect but it seems a lot of people are experiencing the exact same symptoms. I don't know how some people have been on it so long. Just the thought of taking another is depressing me beyond belief.

I took one capsule of this medication at 2:00pm on 12/12/07 and about twenty minutes after taking this medication I began to feel nauseous, than I went and ate something about one hour later just a piece of toast. About ten minutes of eating I began to throw up and started having a headache, so I just kept going not really thinking about it, because the side effect do say headache may occur so I continue my day, about 1 hour and 30 minutes after regurgitating my head was hurting so severely that my eyes was watering and pulse could be heard through my ears, like a drum beating. I then became dizzy and things seemed to get blurred so I laid down and about 10 minutes in laying down my mouth began to fill with thick mucus almost like cotton in my mouth, began to be extremely thirsty so I got up and got water, to throw it back up. I then began to feel my jaw tightening up feeling like I was getting lock jaw. I then called my doctor office and talked to a triage nurse who then called a doctor and called me back and told me not to take any more of the medication and to take 50mg of Beneadryl because of a allergic reaction to the medication, but I am also allergic to PCN and ASA so she said it is rare for people to have an allergic reaction to this medication. Now my symptoms was not over that night I could not sleep, I also had bad dreams, severe night sweats, and nauseous that morning. I started having lower abdominal cramps, and still having problems sleeping, and sometimes I feel like crying and for no reason. Today is 12/20/07 and I still am having severe abdominal cramps, still nauseous in the mornings, no headaches or cotton mouth but the stomach cramps have not yet left and I only took one capsule, today makes a week, tomorrow is my doctor apt. hopefully I can get something to help me out but this is my story about this mess up drug.

My son took this medication for a month, about a month later he started with the headaches. He can not concentrate, he feels like he is in a fog and wore out all the time. It messes with his vision. He has been having these symptoms for about a month and a half with trips to the emergency room and numerous Drs. He never had any problems till this medication. He is missing work. What we need to know from anyone - how long do the symptoms last.
Please respond if you have had the same --headaches and vision problems.

I do not know who you people are, but I feel like I have stumbled onto some help. Please tell me this is not a joke....I am on Doxycline for three days now to treat a sub-clinical suspected infection. I started to feel noticeably flat yesterday, (day two) almost like I was missing a range of emotion. I feel as if someone drugged me wtih some kind of downer. I woke up feeling ok this AM, but have felt worse and worse as the day has gone on. I am in good shape, I am generally an upbeat person, but I feel so profoundly sad, listless, confused, and tired. It as if I am living in a fog, and that every thing requires serious effort. The good news is that I am only on this medication for ten days, I cannot imagine having to take it for longer. Had a little heartburn last evening, but nothing serious. Good luck to all,

I took 300mg of doxycycline a day for three weeks because I had Lyme Disease. It made my stomach upset but if I found if I ate a few saltine crackers with the pills it took care of the nausea. I also noticed that I became very anxious at times while on the medication. I have been off of the antibiotics now for six days and I still have a painful swollen rash on my hands. I work outside and was exposed to the sun while on Doxy and got the standard sun rash we all know about. What I don't understand is why it is getting worse now, even though I am off the antibiotics. It is so bad that I have been lathering my hands in neospirin and wrapping them with gauze to try and heal them faster, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I was prescribed doxycycline for an infection in my testicles. After 5 days of taking 2 pills a day, the pain was diminishing and I was feeling better. However, I never took the pills with food, always took on an empty stomach. Everything was OK for those first 5 days. It was the 10th pill I took that I felt bad pain in my stomach and lower esophagus, a burning pain just below my rib cage. I could not hardly eat as the pain was so bad as food reached the end of my esophagus. I have stopped taking the pill and 4 days later each time I eat food as it passes through my esophagus and enters my stomach, I still experience bad pain. Its funny because there is no pain until food has traveled a good ways down.. It feels like doxycline has burned that connection of the esophagus with the stomach. I

After taking Doxy for only four days I woke up in the middle of the night with major heartburn (something I'd only heard about before!). I stopped it the next day and now two days later still dealing with the same symptom!! I guess I'll try a lower dose later on. Just be warned it's true about eating a LOT with doxy....if you don't you pay the price. Just hope I tolerate this medication next time round as it is currently the only treatment for tropical sprue, a result of a wonderful trip around INDIA!!!
Ahhh the joys of travelling in Asia ! ! ! !

Prescribed for adult acne problem which started around the age of 40. Had one go at it over the winter and found it very effective in curing my skin. However I am an outside worker all be it in Scotland, with a second go prescribed in June. This was a different experiance all together with I guess the sun. I now have what can only be described as water blisters under the skin on my nose and just below my lower lip line. These can be so sore like as many others have described a burning stinging sensation that can come on for hours and then just go. Although they are noticable on my nose as any alteration in temprature makes them very noticable by a deep redness circling each blister. Have also entered into a very low feeling which could be the start of slight depression although not totaly sure, just always seem to have very low points in my day to day life that I never had before. These blisters are still there and burning even after two weeks of not taking this medication of Doxycycline 50mg capsules. Would appreciate any helpful advice or an idea if the burning blister ever goes away? Thank you.

Tips while taking this medication:
1. Sit up for at least an hour after taking doxycycline. And always with at least 8oz of water, 16oz is better. This will help with the majority of stomach discomfort. Take on an empty stomach. If you have any nausea, consult with your doctor or pharmacist BEFORE you opt to take this medication with food. DO NOT TAKE WITH MILK (See item 4.)
2. Suncreen is suggested, minimum of SPF 50, your pharmacologist can assist you with the selection during your consult. If they don't voluntarily consult you on this drug, find a new pharmacy. You can get sunburn even in your house depending on the sun's direction. Any stinging on the skin is a good clue to apply sunscreen and move out of the sunlight.
3. Do not take any form of antacid or vitamin within four hours unless directed otherwise.
4. Doxycycline is a tetracycline, therefore avoid dairy products. This includes cheese and yogurt. You can render the medication totally inactive by cosuming dairy. This can result in your infection not being cleared, superinfection or resistant organisms.
5. If you have recently taking a *cillin type antibiotic, be sure to tell your doctor or pharmacist. Do not take concurrently with these type of antibiotics unless your doctor tells you to do so.
If you develop hives, swelling of the face or throat, shortness of breath contact your doctor or pharmacist right away. These side effects are very rare, but can be serious.
Most side effects from this drug can be avoided by following these simple steps.

This was the worst experience! I started taking Doxy to rid myself of infection that might be caused due to a vaginal procedure. I started taking the med on Monday afternoon, by Thursday night my legs and arms were on fire it seemed. The tingly feeling you are talking about. I completely lost my appetite. I was tired, weak, lightheaded, nauseated. Here it is five days after I have stopped the med and I still feel the burning, tingly skin. Also, I had muscle pain that caused my skin to be sore to even touch. I cringed at the thought of someone touching me for two days. NEVER AGAIN will I take this. I mean, after all, it's strong enough to be used for ANTHRAX, how strong does that have to be?

I've had symptoms for about two months now without knowing they were coming from taking doxy. First, I couldn't sleep at night b/c my feet felt like they were on fire! and my hands had the same tingly feeling esp. after a change in temperature. Then my toes became red and swolen around the nail. After about a month, the feelings never really went away but always got worse when I was in the sun. A rash began to develop on the tops of my toes. Each bump looked like a tiny water blister. After more sunlight, the rash spread to my hands and arms. More fire. I also got the terrible feeling in my thumbs and index fingers that felt like I banged them with a hammer. Now that the rash is going away (still bad on my toes), my fingernails are terribly brittle, discolored, and are coming off the nail bed on a few fingers. I've also gotten a fever blister and terrible sunburn on my nose, ugh. I was presecribed this medicine for acne, but that seems as though it hasn't even been treated. I've also noticed blurred vision and back pain, but I think that is just b/c I hate my job. LOL.

I recently had gum surgery and was prescribed dox. I am only taking 100 mg/day, but I've had extreme lethargy, headaches, itching, swollen lips, nausea and bouts of confusion and dizziness. I feel very sad on this medication and I'm usually a very happy person. I'm stopping the meds today, so hopefully I will be back to my normal self within the next week. I wish I had researched the drug sooner so that I could have stopped taking it earlier...I thought my reactions were due to the pain meds, but I was mistaken!!!

I've been taking doxycycline for a few days now. The first few days i felt dizzy, and I had shortness of breath and a heavy chest, the next day I vomitted, and had sharp pains in my stomach. I realized it was because I didn't take it with food, now I take it after a few bites of a meal and basically try to cover the pill with food and liquid so it doesnt upset my stomach and its working...but I'm surprised this antibiotic is has so many side effects..I also have chronic headaches and advil doesn't work at all. I advise anyone taking this medication to eat it with your food or shortly after, especially in the morning.
It seems to be clearing up my bladder infection though, I couldn't take two medications at once so I took this one for a bacterial infection, and I think its killing 2 birds with one stone.

I was given Doxycycline on Tuesday after having my wisdom teeth extracted as an infection preventative. I followed the directions carefully as I have always been very sensative to medications and wanted to be careful with this new one. Wednesday evening within minutes of taking the pill I was overcome with nausea. I began to vomit and with in an hour had severe chest/stomach pains just below my rib cage. The following morning I called the prescribing Dr. right away- The Dr. told me to stop taking the Doxycycline. It is now Saturday evening (3 full days later) and the horrible chest/stomach pain has not at all subsided. I have had a hard time functioning in this much pain and am eager for it to end, to say the least. On top of all of this I have also experienced bloating in my stomach and an intense amout of gas. (burping, etc.)
I realize I have obviously had a bad reaction to this medication, some people do and some people don't- it's the case with any drug. My main concern now is WHEN will these side effects end? How could two days on this medication have caused 3 additional days worth of such terrible pain? Should I contact my general physician on Monday, and if so is there even anything that they can do?
I have had drug reactions in the past, typically when one ends a medication one is also able to end the uncomfortable reactions of the medication. This is a nightmare....How long does this stuff stay in a person's system???? Scary thought, isn't it.

I have been taking doxycycline for about 5 days now, 100mg 2x per day. I was fine the first couple days, but now I am noticing a bit of nausea within an hour after I take the morning dose. It normally goes away after abour one hour. I also noticed that I am rather cloudy in the head during this time, and I can't seem to form coherent thoughts. Of course I noticed this while in the grocery store trying to shop with a 10 month old. NOT A GOOD TIME!! Anywho, I am stuck with this medication since my first course of Biaxin was a failure. Hopefully it will end soon and the pneumonia will go away. So far I feel no better.

I have been taking Doxycycline for about a month now for adult acne. I have pretty fair skin and I live in Florida so I always wear plenty of sunscreen. Since I have been on this medication I have gotten 2 pretty bad sunburns (even though I was wearing 30 SPF sunblock) to the point where my skin has a constant tingly sensation that doesn't go away for a few days. I don't think it's worth it to take this just to treat acne, but at the time it sounded better than Accutane!

Hi All
I just started taking doxycycline three days ago for Chronic Folliculitis of the scalp. I am so glad to hear I am not the only one who gets nauseas. The first morning that I took it, I was driving to work and threw up right in my car. Didn't have enough time to make it out of the car when I pulled over. Anyway for some reason this medicine will not let me sleep at night either. I keep waking up every half hour wondering why I am waking up for. Its nerve raking! Now everytime i eat i get pain in my chest and back. After reading all the post about the sun effects, you can rest assure I will not be going into the sun while on this medication.

I have been on this antibiotic for pneumonia for a week. I already have a possible ulcer and have a prescription for zantac. I am on 100mg BID for two weeks. Since taking this medication my ulcer has become much much worse with frequent heartburn and a lot of drowsiness/lethargy. I feel like I float through my day and am confused and using the wrong words a lot, and just not paying full attention to anything. I have a constant pain right under my sternum that flares up and a lot of mid to lower back pain, esp. at night. I have had a headache for the last four days. I did some research and found that ANTACIDS SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN WITHIN TWO HOURS OF DOXYCYCLINE!!! Bummer for me, since I have been drinking Mylanta like it was my only source of hydration.

I have been taking this medication for 6 days and the first pill I took it was on an empty stomach and did I regret that. My mouth watered really bad a little later and kept burping then about 5 minutes later I was throwing up it came so fast I had to pull over to do so. I find that it is best to wait for about 1 hr our so after eating and lots of fluids to prevent your mouth from being dry, take my warning and do not take on an empty stomach if you do not want to feel dizzy, nauseated, sick on the stomach and tired.

I have been taking Doryx for about 5 weeks now. About 3 weeks ago, I started noticing an increase in hair loss. Now, it is really falling out. My scalp feels itchy and hot. I went to my family doctor and I am waiting for the results. I am very concerned. I stopped taking the medication today. Has anyone else experienced this while taking Doxycycline Hyclate?
