I started this antibiotic because of symptoms my ER physician thought paralleled those of lyme disease... At first I had mild to severe nausea... which was assisted with the intake of a meal or snack. Those symptoms I could deal with... that and a wonderful yeast infection that occurred around the fifth day. The side affects that became unruly, were those of confusion, panic, paranoia (I became extremely jealous/thought my partner wanted to leave me/ and felt un-trusting of just about anyone near - people mocking me, wanting to avoid me, unloved me), and had random bouts of crying - which affected my libido tremendously.... one moment I was in the mood.. the next I wanted to be held in a fetal position and cry. I finished the 14 day regiment about three days ago, however I still have some side effects remaining... I still have panicky thoughts.. almost flash backs of past anxieties... as though I am relieving them again... and paranoia... that people are talking about me, or scheming. I can understand these behaviors if they were pertinently normal.. and a justified part of my general existence... however, I am generally a stable, upbeat and cheerful individual with normal reactions to stress... being that the only time I act reasonably irrational is around my period, where I feel fat and uncomfortable. The panic and rage I felt on this medication was coupled with insane thoughts and neurosis.
I do not recommend this to sensitive individuals.... or any one who is prone to medication side effects.... truly an awful experience... glad there is a support group. Still waiting to return back to normal.

Well, I have just started taking Doxy for a couple of days now and so far have noticed a change in bowel movements, appetite, a bit of nausea, my stomach has been feeling a bit bubbly and weird here and there. Also, it makes me feel high after taking it. And i know this sound funny but it makes my bottom itchy. Which is all really weird but over all I don't really care about the side effects as long as they dont become too extreme. I think as long as I take the medicine on terms that are best for me I will be just fine. I am just very glad to be getting rid of an infection that was causing me a lot more pain and discomfort than this med and will be glad when this is over. The biggest issue I have with the pills is getting them down my throat...I'm not a good pill taker and they make me gag. I can't imagine having to take them and deal with side effects for months at a time as some of you are doing so good luck to everyone!! And I also agree that doctors really do need to address the more serious side effects on this med! After coming to this site I will definitely take precautions.

Diagnosed with staff infection, took one pill last night two hours after eating, sat up in bed reading and went to sleep no problem. Today, ate two cereal bard at 6:30 a.m., and then took the pill at 9:00 with water. I became extremely hot and nauseated about 10 minutes later and drinking water did not help. The nausea was so bad that I could hardly keep vomiting and it has not subsided. I do not have a weak stomach and have never experienced this degree of nausea with any antibiotic.

Have been on med for two weeks for confirmed case of Lyme Disease. It being August, I spent a good deal of time in the sun. Even with constant application of 50 spf sunblock, ended up burned. Hands and feet, especially. After that initial (horrible) sunburn went away, have stayed inside. Somehow, yesterday my nose became very red. Ho ho ho. My lips are also burned, strangely, and seemed to have swollen to Angelina Jolie proportions... worried will continue to swell to Bubba Gump size. Will be interesting when I meet my eighth grade students for the first time tomorrow. As for nausea, not so bad. All in all, I'd much rather suffer these symptoms than continue the excruciating joint pain of the Lyme.

Been on a 7 day 100mg course for sinus infection. Ive felt dizziness, headaches, nausea, tingling in my arms and legs, heartburn, stomach cramps and my throat and glands swollen up. Also Ive been left with no energy and sleeping for 12 hours a night. As soon as I got in from work I was going straght to bed! Couldn't even be bothered getting a shower. Which is very unlike me as Im very active normally. My course finished 2 days ago and my heartburn remains as well as the headaches. And my sinus problem has not gone. This was not worth it! Never again!

I've been taking Doxycycline for two days now. I have a severs case of insomnia. I have not slept in over 36 hours, which is very unusual for me. I am experiencing shortness of breath, extremely exhausted (but can't sleep), nausea, dizziness, feeling of something in my throat, and weird weird moods (getting mad for no reason, which isn't usually me and people are noticing that something is different).
I'm supposed to be taking it for another 5 days for an infection. Any advice on what I should do? This whole no sleeping thing just isn't working for me.

I was given Doxycycline to prevent infection from an HSG procedure. I took one the night before the procedure, two the day of and one the morning after. So total of 4 capsules of 100mg each. I'm supposed to take the full course, which is 6 capsules, but I'm going to stop now. After the 4th capsule I started having bad stomach cramps, a bit of nausea and severe diarrhea. I know the risks of not completing the course but I'm not going through these stomach pains again. No more Doxy for me! I have a similar bad reaction years ago to an antibiotic called Augmentin. I guess I have to avoid those 2 kinds of antibiotics in the future. After reading all the posts, I can't believe they still prescribe Doxy to people. It seems horrible.

Taking Doxycycline hyclate for bacterial infection. I am on day 6 and the headaches are getting worse. I woke up last night at 1 AM and felt Nausea and a severe headache. I have to take this with a small meal or I will be in the bathroom until my next dose. I have diarrhea, headaches, DEPRESSION, no patience with my kids or wife, no sexual feelings, tingling lips that are starting to crack in the corners, dry mouth and no energy to do anything. I feel better on it, then I did without taking it, but If this does not take care of the so called bacterial infection, then I will be asking for a different MED next time. This stuff is very tough on you and if you can get something with less side effects, GET IT!

I've only been on Doxycycline Hyclate for 2 weeks - I am supposed to take it for 2 months to clear up my acne. The first side effect I experienced was the nausea/vomiting. I HAVE to eat something before I take it or it makes me throw up. I was sensitive to the sun, but the thing that was the most bothersome was the tingling in my feet & hands. When water touched them, they would tingle as if they were asleep. It was a very weird feeling. The worst side effect for me, though, are my mood swings. I get so angry I feel almost like I'm going to explode. I can't just drop it like I usually do - I just keep fighting & yelling - which is not like me. I've been saying things I don't mean & lashing out over stupid small things. I feel almost as if I'm going crazy. This is just the first 2 weeks, after reading this board, I'm wondering if it's even worth continuing. Supposedly, when this is prescribed for acne, most cases come back after you stop taking the pill. If it's going to come back anyways, I'd rather not put myself through this for 2 months...

Am on my second 3-week course of doxycycline for Lyme disease since the first go round didn't eradicate the infection. Have all the classic side effects mentioned, however the stomach ailments are GREATLY alleviated by taking a strong (70 billion parts per capsule) probiotic. Take it half way between the 2 doxycycline doses and although it isn't magic it does make a difference.
Although I have no appetite, I try to graze lightly on foods that appeal to me throughout the day and that seems to help with many of the horrific side effects.
Also, my MD suggested I take Aleve and NOT Ibuprofen for headaches since the Ibuprofen can cause a "headache" kickback (and causes stomach pain). Don't know if that's true, but the Aleve seems to help a little.
Worst side effects for me are utter exhaustion, dizziness, stomach pain, sore throat, and a head that hurts feels like it is filled with wet cotton. Also heart palpitations which may be part of the Lyme disease.
Hope some of this helps.

I'm taking Doxycycline 100mg 5x/day. Started a little over 2 weeks ago for Chronic Lyme. I have a 4 month course to complete.
In the past 14 years after that tick got me I was the living dead, those with Chronic Lyme know what I mean. I have virtually the same side effects as everyone else here and wonder if it even matters how much you take a day. A lot of you have the same doses (100mg 2x/day) and the same degree of side effects as I do. My side effects are headaches or a pain in my right temple whenever I cough, severe itching EVERYWHERE, blisters on my hands from itching, burns on my skin wherever the sun shines on me (I live in Florida), vomiting daily some days worse than others, mood swings, crying for nothing, nausea almost constantly, gassy (both ends), I have a bladder infection that started 2 days ago that after reading this can be attributed to the Doxy, asthma symptoms are getting out of hand, I also have this odd swelling/pain over my liver/gall bladder area that's been coming and going, ears ring, noise bothers me and actually starts a headache, diarrhea the first week and constipation the second week, skin feels tight and there's noticeable swelling all over.
With that said I want to say that yes this is not one of the more pleasant drugs to be on however in my case if I don't get these bugs out of me I am going to die so would rather deal with side effects knowing these bugs are being killed and I will be off them someday unlike the Lyme I will have for eternity. Lyme people and other chronically ill people on these meds say this is called "herxing" and this comes and goes also. You feel really bad and then you feel good, then bad and then good again and so on. I started out on this drug keeping in mind that any sikness/side effect was telling me those bugs are dying so in a sense I almost welcome them.
Good luck everyone:)

I am 19 year old male and was diagnosed with Epididymitis a couple of weeks ago. Prescribed 100mg Doxycycline HYC TB--taken twice daily for 10 days. Aside from the nausea and headaches, I have recently realized a tingling in my right calf. It has probably been feeling this way for about a week now. It feels numb and while there is no actual pain, it is quite uncomfortable
In addition, I recently developed a lump right under my right nipple. It's probably about an inch in diameter and feels as if it's a cyst.
Plus, Im not convinced my Epididymitis has totally gone away. There is still some very minor discomfort in that area.
Any similar side effects?

Severe headache, fatigue, diarrhea, and nausea, stomach pain that you wouldn't believe. I have common side-effects to most antibiotics so I wasn't worried at first but now that I have read all these posts I am getting pretty nervous. Last night I was back in the ER for the second time in three days because the lymph nodes and glands in my neck were swollen. The doctor gave me a CT scan and discovered that I had acute bilateral infections in my lymphnodes. An infection that I didn't have before I started taking the medication. This drug is horrible and I don't recommend it to anyone.

I had to take Doxycycline for 3 weeks last August when a tick bite I had developed the classic "bulls eye"... a sign of Lyme disease. Everything went well for the first 10 days then I started getting kind of nervous and couldn't sleep well at night. I was constantly starving, really ravenous and had to eat constantly otherwise the nausea got worse. I was glad when I was finally able to stop taking the meds, BUT then after 24 hours I became depressed and really fuzzy in my head and disoriented. This lasted for another 2-4 days. I'm feeling much better now, but I have noticed that I'm just a lot more sensitive to other stimulants...coffee, sugar, alcohol, chocolate. I know I have a few other allergies, hay fever, food allergies etc. I was just wondering, does anyone else out there who has had a negative reaction to doxy have any other allergies or intolerances, or asthma? How much sugar, either in the form of sweets or alcohol do you usually consume? Daily, weekly, monthly...none at all? Feedback would be greatly appreciated. I would like to get to the root of this problem.

What I am experiencing may or may not be the result of the doxycycline hyclate, but I suspect that it is after reading all of these posts. I took a 100MG doxycycline capsule about a week ago late at night ( to prevent Malaria), laid down, and I woke up to discover a sensation of something being stuck in my throat. That was about a week ago...since then it has progressively become harder to swallow and eat. I have experienced some tingling in my fingers, occasional bouts of nausea and discomfort/pressure in my chest that is very noticeable in my chest when I lie down. Also had severe chronic constipation subsequent to taking the pill, but this may not be related to the doxy, not sure.
I went to the doctor today-the PA ran all kind of tests-EKG, throat x-rays, blood, and urine and didn't see anything abnormal. I hope to find out what the problem is soon.

I was prescribed doxycycline 2xday for seven days. On the third day I started to feel very sick. However, it was not until the 5th/6th day that I began to suspect I was having a reaction to the antibiotic. I have never had a negative reaction to any medication ever. My symptoms started with severe nausea that lasted all day, and extreme tiredness. The symptoms continued to get worse....muscle aches, joint pains, elevated blood pressure, back & neck pains, unfocused vision, confusion, dizziness, loss of appetite, muscle tremors that woke me from sleep, depression, and anxiety. When I discussed with my doctor that I suspected it might be the medication I was dismissed and told I was developing a virus. They had prescribed this medication often with no problems. I decided to try to stick with it for two more days. That was the biggest mistake ever. I can't really describe what it did to my head, but all I could think about was that I was dying. I guess severe anxiety and paranoia. So, I finally stopped taking it.
It took three full days with no medication for my nausea and mental confusion to begin to subside. It took a few more days for most of the muscle and back pain to go away. It also took about seven days for the depression and most of the anxiety to quiet down. It is now 11 days with no medication and I still have diarrhea, and minor joint pain. I have also stopped drinking coffee because I an still a bit anxious. I have not really gotten back to my routine yet, and will probably hold off going to the gym until next week.
The most frustrating thing of all is that this medication was given to me as a preventative before a small surgery. All the symptoms I was supposed to be watching for I was having. I am sure this contributed to the anxiety.
At least most of the symptoms have gotten better, and I am hopeful that they will continue to improve. I have researched serum sickness and it says it can take 1-2 weeks for symptoms to subside, and up to several months in some cases.
Good luck to everyone.

I have been on Doxy now for about 6 weeks for a couple chronic infections. I have noticed it does make me sick to my stomach when I take it on an empty stomach. Well, about three days ago I started to feel like maybe I was having heartburn but it was a different feeling. I felt like I had food stuck in my esophagus and it hurt right at the end about where the breast bone ends and up in my throat. I felt like it was spasming and the pain would refer to my jaw. I have never had heartburn much and certainly nothing like this. I hurt all day long and the pain was worse when I ate or drank. Of course I was freaking out until I saw on this site that Doxy can cause damage and apparently a lot of pain. I think it was my fault though because I didn't always take it with a full glass of water and I often took it right before I went to bed and sometimes while I was still in bed. No one told me not to lay down after taking it or anything. The only info i got was a little explanation that it can cause an upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting so take it with some food if that occurs. Well, i would definitely recommend taking it with some food an apple or something and not before you go to bed, and drink a lot of water with it!!!
I have a Dr. apt next week but I am going to try not taking it for a few days to see if the pain lessens.

Wow, I thought I was crazy and even thought I was pregnan! The symptoms of this stuff will drive anyone nuts. I have the gas, bloating, dizziness, nausea, lower abdominal cramps, EXTREME exhaustion, difficulty breathing, foggy in the head, pressure in the head/mild, constant headache, lack of interest in anything, loss of appetite, feeling sad and depressed, and an over-all feeling of not knowing myself. All this started on the beginning of the 3rd week of treatment. I really want my Acne to be gone because I am 41 and not loving the pizza face, but this stuff iss making me crazy! I'm drinking alot of herbal teas and juices to try and keep something in my stomach at all times because I don't eat much anymore. I hope that by the end of my 1st bottle, the weirdness, pains, and the feeling of having a vice grip on my head, will go away. If not, I'm calling it quits with this drug! Good luck all.

Not sure if its Hyclate or not, but I am taking Doxycycline for an eye infection (100mg 2x/day). At first everything was ok, then after about 4 days, I stated having some nausea and acid reflux (throat seemed to be burning). I have to take it for 3 more weeks, but next week only 100mg/day which I hope will help.\
Is this typical of an antibiotic that you might not get any side effects until it build up in your system?

I started taking Doxycycline on Jan 22, 2007 for Lyme Disease. I usually get nausea and/or vomiting with most antibiotics so I try and take precautions. The first day I took it I had nausea, headache, dizziness and a feeling of being "out of it". by the 3rd day the dizziness and the feeling of being "out of it" was gone but after I took it in the morning within 1/2 hour I started feeling severe esophagus pain. It's not like heartburn because it's right below my rib cage. That night I started noticing feeling like there was a lump in my throat. By the next morning the lump felt like a huge knot. Now, It hurts every time I swallow, the esophagus pain never ends. Last night I spent the night crying feeling like everything was hopeless. I thought it was just because I've been dealing with the pain from Lyme and now the pain from the medicine now that I read this message board, I wonder if the hopeless, despondent feeling is from this medication. I have 2 more weeks on this I don't think I can take it that long. I haven't eaten anything because it hurts to swallow and it burns. I cry all the time. I did not read that depression was a side effect but it seems a lot of people are experiencing the exact same symptoms. I don't know how some people have been on it so long. Just the thought of taking another is depressing me beyond belief.

This is my second day on Doxycycline.I was prescribed Doxycycline yesterday, for a sinus infection. I am on 100mg BID. my sinus infections are, well, I get on an antibiotic about once a year. This is, I believe the first time I've been on Doxycycline. Yesterday, the pharmacist warned me about being sure to eat with it. I took the pill, but did not eat enough food, and I had nausea. I did eat food with it last night, and did much better. Today I ate food with it, but I do notice that if I don't eat meals, I get very nauseous. Of course, the antibiotic has not kicked in yet. my throat is still sore,I hope it kicks in soon. I tend to rush antibiotics, and I'm a nurse, and know better.

My son took this medication for a month, about a month later he started with the headaches. He can not concentrate, he feels like he is in a fog and wore out all the time. It messes with his vision. He has been having these symptoms for about a month and a half with trips to the emergency room and numerous Drs. He never had any problems till this medication. He is missing work. What we need to know from anyone - how long do the symptoms last.
Please respond if you have had the same --headaches and vision problems.

I started taking Doxycycline five days ago for adult acne (I'm 30 and experiencing hormonal side effects from coming off DepoProvera after one year). I was prescribed 100 mg twice daily. My evening pill is okay, I take it right before bed. But when I take the pill in the morning, I get absolutely nauseous for about thirty minutes after and it feels as though I swallowed a pill ten times its actual size and it's still stuck in my throat. I haven't thrown up yet, but I've been up to that point for thirty minutes at a time. I'm weighing the benefits and side effects in considering whether or not to continue taking it. I haven't had the nauseau every time I've taken the pill, so I'm trying to drink water and eat to see if that helps. I'm thinking these side effects may subside over time.
Everyone's suggestions were really helpful to me so I wanted to post mine in hopes they will help someone else.

I have experienced extreme dehydration, nauseau, headache, disorientation, drowsiness, and stomach pain. I have not experienced vommitting but have felt close to it. I have also experienced a loss of appetite.

Hello, I started taking 100mgs twice a day three weeks ago for severe acne on my back and shoulders. (I am 40 have adult acne or back acne that never goes away) I just wanted to mention though that all of a sudden I noticed DEPRESSION and it took me awhile to realize that the Doxycycline was the only thing that was new. I have had bad depression before and am very familiar with it but it was completely gone. So, I am happy to see that maybe this med has caused others to get depression too. The nausea is nothing compared to mood disorders. My doctor said to stop taking it.
