So I've been working my ass off for the last two weeks trying to get in shape and have not lost a single pound. The only thing I'm doing different is taking this for a sinus infection. What's up with that? I can't lose weight while taking it?

Hello, fellow suffering souls, I was given Doxy for a sinus infection. I had heartburn and felt depressed the whole time. I took 100 mg twice a day for seven days. It's been two weeks and I'm super sensitive to light. I can't see! Everything is blinding. It's really bad. Ughhhh..... MahaYoga 108

Ive been taking Doxy for 6 days now, after about 4 days I began to have a very itchy burning scrotum. Also have a very "warm" feeling in my chest. Can anyone else confirm the symptoms with the itchy genital region? It is quite red and painful. Lanacane seems to provide some temporary relief. Thanks for your input.

I was prescribed Doxy one week ago to treat a sinus infection, and have been taking it twice a day (100 mg x 2 = 200 mg a day) and one week later i am MISERABLE. The migraines I've been feeling are indescribable. The body aches and pains and the fatigue is miserable. Ive never had a headache so bad as this. Also I eat a little bit then feel so full and disgusting it's unbearable. I will NEVER take this drug again.

I have been on Doxycycline Hyclate 3 days for sinus infection. Last night when I took the pill I noticed that it seemed like the pill was stuck in my throat. I had a little heartburn also. I took another pill about 2 hours ago & had the same stuck in my throat feel. I now have horrible chest pains, heartburn & rapid heartbeat. Something told me to google it & see if anyone else had the same reaction. I'm so glad I did. I won't be taking anymore of these. I'm just waiting now for it to wear off.

DO NOT TAKE DOXYCYCLINE IF YOU HAVE ANY HISTORY OF DEPRESSION!!!

I do and doxy has sent me over the edge for about a month AFTER i stopped taking it.

I was given doxy by my doctor for a sinus infection for a week and stopped taking it just under a month ago. This past month has been absolute hell for me.

The day I stopped taking it I went from feeling fine into a 5 hour crying fit with suicidal thoughts in less than 30 minutes. During the fit I became convinced that this was how my life always is, that I was depressed, that I had always been depressed and that I needed anti depressant as I spend all my time crying. That was on 2nd Feb.

The next day I was shaky and felt very up and downy but went back to feeling normal pretty quickly and after I did some internet research on Doxycycline (the only change in my diet/lifestyle) assumed it was that. I read some pretty bad stuff on the internet about other people’s experiences which were very similar to the one I had had and I thought that must be it.

So I decided to drink lots of water and have been taking Milk Thistle to cleanse my liver.

Then this Saturday past I had exactly the same thing. I had another one of these 5 hour crying fits and more suicidal thoughts and I became convinced I was bipolar. This time was much worse in a lot of ways.

I felt it again felt like a panic attack and to me the change in my physiology was really noticeable. The noticeable dip in my mood – very sudden from feeling fine to feeling a little bit irritable and then withdrawn with some anxiety – and wanting to be reassured but also being a little aggressive in communication almost like trying to find a fight, then a change in breathing and heart rate and then plunge into dark thoughts and sobbing.

When I went to see the doctor on Monday my mood was still swinging up and down and I just felt crazy so I mentioend to him the doxy and he dismissed this without even asking a question about when or how much I'd taken.

I ask to be referred to a psychiatrist as I do get that I may have underlying issues and these mood swings were so bad and so strong and so by the time Wednesday came with my in and out moods I had convinced myself it was probably to do with my childhood and the difficult heart stuff and repressing how I really feel

Whilst I do have my fair share of childhood stuff and issues of the heart I think I’ve become so self aware and so careful with myself and I think I talk to my inner child so much and check that I am okay with things and I deal with things really well. so this has all come as a bit of nasty shock as I thought I was okay with everything. In fact I know I’m okay with everything as I write this.

But during these mood swings I am definitely not okay. I do not feel like myself. I become convinced that I have been lying to myself about being okay, that I have never been okay that I am mentally ill and that is why I am having mood swings and I start really analyzing everything and linking everything back to the past and trying to make links with things that are happening today and things that happened in the past. I haven’t had any change in my heart situation that this could be a reaction to, its remained the same for a number of months and I don’t have a problem with it but when I have this mood swing I blame that situation and my childhood together. I start wanting to blame people. I start thinking I have two personalities and I just start trying to find reasons and I have no idea what I feel, who I am or what I want, if I’m telling the truth of if I’ve ever told the truth. I start doubting everything and everyone. My head hurts, I get in a state of confusion and I become a little mean to people. I start trying to blame events and situations, anything I can find. It’s an absolute nightmare. Then I get confused about what I have and haven’t said and agitated that I need to say more to make myself understood. I might be stable for hours or even a day but it happens very suddenly and it’s a really physical sensation, first the dip in mood, the irritability, the breathing will change, I will feel anxious and can really feel my heart beating, like when you are really scared about something – that fight or flight feelings. I then get a really strong sense of insecurity and nervousness and will become really awkward at communication and almost aggressive and rude in my communications and then rueful.

The crazy thing is my mood is just absolutely all over the place in a way it has never ever been before, even in my days of deepest darkest moments when everything in life sucked and people were horrid to me. I don’t understand why I would, after all my years of learning how to deal with this and cope with this be even worse when my situation is so much better. It just doesn’t feel like its actually real. I don’t feel like anything I’ve said when I’ve been in these moods is actually a true reflection of how I feel when I am out of the swing.

Then I come back to feeling more like a version of myself but not quite and then I swing again very quickly and go from very hyper and laughing to almost the polar opposite in a very short space of time.

This is the first time in a week that I’ve felt like I am completely normal again. Right now I feel very calm and grounded and rational like I have been feeling for a very long time and I feel very clear in my head that I am completely fine and this is a reaction to some chemicals in my body affecting my mood rather than a psychological issue.

I am fully prepared for another full scale attack of mood swings and totally losing the plot again though.

I am lucky in that I have a good friend who called a doctor friend of his in the US and the first thing the doctor friend said when asked about Doxycline was 'don't tell me, you know someone who's had anxiety attacks and suicidal reactions'. According to this doctor this is VERY common and very well documented. There should be no lasting effects or permanent damage and now the doxy is out of my system I should not be experiencing these moods swings.

HOWEVER - he thins that because I have a history of depression due to my childhood issues the doxy has basically destabilised me and driven me to the edge again.

I did some really lengthy research because I really feel like this is a brain chemistry issue rather than a psychology issue and knowing I've dealt with everything and I just don't get why these issues would re-arise. I'm going to go get some therapy no matter what but I just wanted to know the brain chemistry.

Obviously if my GP doesnt even recognise that doxy can have this affect there is going to be no interest in helping me figure this out so I will figure it out myself.

From what I can understand Doxy decreases some amino acids in the brain which is important as simply put, amino acids get converted into neurotransmitters which play a critical role in your brain. Neurotransmitters are the chemicals which help your brain cells 'talk' to each other. Low levels of certain neurotransmitters have been associated with depression and anxiety.

I feel like I am 'back' from the Doxy but to be honest, I have no idea what it has done to my brain and I doubt there has been that much research into it...if so why on earth would they prescribe a drug that does this to people?
Particularly people who have a history of depression.

I am going to try taking amino acids to see if that helps - it can't hurt.

If anyone else is going through the same thing please get in touch and let me know!
This site totally helped me!! Thank you everyone who has posted on it. It really makes a huge difference to know that there are other people out there going through the same thing. I have felt like I am absolutely crazy! Thank you so much :-)

I must say I haven't had the slightest problem with this medication. I am a small girl (105 lbs.) and most medications usually hit me pretty hard, so I am surprised to read so much negativity concerning this pill. I will say that I was thrilled at how fast it knocked out my sinus infection and I would definitely use it again should one reoccur.

I have taken 3 doses of an 8 dose course of doxy for a sinus infection. in the past i've been prescribed amoxicillin and had a little bit of dizziness on the first day but nothing severe. So when I took my first dose of doxy and felt a bit dizzy and woozy I figured it was nothing out of the ordinary. Day 2 however this got much worse with nausea and sweats and I spent most of last night trying not to throw up. This morning I woke up with no nausea and was thinking, today will be fine, the worst part is over. I wasn't due to take another dose until 6pm but at around 3pm I ate a bagel and before I had even finished it my stomach was turning over and over. That was 3 hours ago. My head is spinning, my stomach is still upset and I'm having cramps now. I've also started needing to pee like a racehorse. Suffice to say, there is no freakin way I'm taking another one of those things. I'm baffled as to why my doctor even prescribed it in the first place. I'm working on my masters right now and have an assignment due in 4 days so i have no choice but to stop the course and hope my sinus infections goes away itself. There are studies to suggest this drug is 3 times more likely to cause stomach upset than other antibiotics. Why do doctors not seem aware of this?

I have been taking it for almost a week and i have experienced extreme nausea, headaches, lower back pain, lower abdominal pain, hot flashes, dizziness and a slight fever. before i saw this site i was worried that something else more serious was wrong with me.

Hi there,
I took this medication for a supposed sinus infection, which after taking Azithromycin and than Doxy I have been really sick! I guess I had the flu and I panicked (because I am prone to sinus infections) and went on antibiotics without knowing for sure- after bloodwork and an x-ray there is no infection... so... after taking Doxy for 10 days I have been very exhausted-but mostly, flu like and muscle aches, its on day three after taking the last dose so I hope these muscle aches and tiredness goes away soon. I have noticed in the past that i get the same symptoms, like with Biaxin, and Cipro is really brutal... not to mention that I am allergic to Penicillin and Sulpha... so much fun lol

Been on a 7 day 100mg course for sinus infection. Ive felt dizziness, headaches, nausea, tingling in my arms and legs, heartburn, stomach cramps and my throat and glands swollen up. Also Ive been left with no energy and sleeping for 12 hours a night. As soon as I got in from work I was going straght to bed! Couldn't even be bothered getting a shower. Which is very unlike me as Im very active normally. My course finished 2 days ago and my heartburn remains as well as the headaches. And my sinus problem has not gone. This was not worth it! Never again!

I started Doxycycline Hyclate several days ago (100 mg 2x daily) as part of 3 week regimen to treat Lyme Disease. I have had some stomach upset, a generally reduced appetite, and cottonmouth... but by far and large the biggest effect has been this overwhelming exhaustion.

Went to bad at 9:30 last night and woke up at 9:00 am this morning but could not drag myself outta bed until almost noon. Its now the middle of the afternoon and I feel like a complete zombie. Spacy and unmotivated, my head might as well be made of wood and can't pull it together to even take a shower yet.

I am a real outdoors guy and keep up a busy routine of work and exercise. Another 2 and a half weeks of this is gonna drive me nuts. I guess it is better than having Lyme, but does it get any easier?

I began Doxy in Sept of 2007. The first week into it I noticed the roof of my mouth felt strange, kind of rough and sore. I attributed it to the drug and figured it would go away once I was off of it. I began to get a very sore tongue which I attributed to candida....it was a little white too. I was on the drug for five weeks and the mouth symptoms never went away, just went on to become a chronic burning tongue and mouth. Scalded feelings in the mouth as though I had slurped boiling hot coffee. Also, noticed I began feeling very tired and melancholy on the drug....those symptoms have never really gone away. It's been nearly a year and I have tried multiple remedies for my mouth and nothing helps. Has anybody else had the burning and inflammation feeling in their oral cavity. It shows no outward signs.

Taking this for a sinus infection that wont go away. Waiting for results of cat scan. I have already tried taking Augmentim 3 times didn't work so not doxycline. The first 2 days was awful stomach issues. Burning in my stomach. The paper said take on empty stomach unless you cant take it so I started taking it right after my meal and much better. The nausea and burning and vomitting feeling went away after 3 days. So did the heartburn. But now I am EXTREME dizzy. While driving I feel out of it and tired and when I get home I start feeling the room spin and freak out so I lay down and then I am done for the night because I am just so dizzy and off balance. Today I got dressed for work and I was going to put on some higher shoes and couldn't balance myself so I stuck to flats. I only have 4 more days of this so I think I may stick it out. I just hope the dizziness goes away.

I was so glad to see this website and see that I was not alone. My Dr told me to take the Doxy with lots of liquid (not milk) before breakfast and dinner and said I had to eat. He said under no circumstances take it before bed. So he must have known about some of the problems. But like so many others I had heartburn real bad and a couple times burped up burning liquid. I've had constant pain just below my rib cage and in my back at the same location and real bad migraines. I thought maybe it was a sinus infection and thats why I looked it up to see if this antibiotic treated sinus infections to rule this out to decide if it was migraines or not. Usually if I get a migraine its for two days max and this has been a week. Oh and I also had swollen feet, ankles, and calfs but thought I maybe just ate too much salt or something. I've been feeling miserable with all this going on. After reading these entries on this wonderful site and seeing that all these symptoms fit as side effects I stopped taking it right then and there. It's been 3 days and my head, stomach, and back are still killing me but the swelling is gone and heartburn much better. I sure hope this gets out of my system soon. No depression or mood issues here.

This is my second day on Doxycycline.I was prescribed Doxycycline yesterday, for a sinus infection. I am on 100mg BID. my sinus infections are, well, I get on an antibiotic about once a year. This is, I believe the first time I've been on Doxycycline. Yesterday, the pharmacist warned me about being sure to eat with it. I took the pill, but did not eat enough food, and I had nausea. I did eat food with it last night, and did much better. Today I ate food with it, but I do notice that if I don't eat meals, I get very nauseous. Of course, the antibiotic has not kicked in yet. my throat is still sore,I hope it kicks in soon. I tend to rush antibiotics, and I'm a nurse, and know better.

Just finished my sixth day of Doxy for a sinus infection. The first day I had a serious muscle cramp in my leg, then on the second day through - experienced weired tingling sensations from my elbows down and my knees down (almost like my arms and legs were "asleep". ) I thought I was losing my mind until reading other postings. Does anyone know how long these sensations last?

I've been taking doxycycline for a few days now. The first few days i felt dizzy, and I had shortness of breath and a heavy chest, the next day I vomitted, and had sharp pains in my stomach. I realized it was because I didn't take it with food, now I take it after a few bites of a meal and basically try to cover the pill with food and liquid so it doesnt upset my stomach and its working...but I'm surprised this antibiotic is has so many side effects..I also have chronic headaches and advil doesn't work at all. I advise anyone taking this medication to eat it with your food or shortly after, especially in the morning.

It seems to be clearing up my bladder infection though, I couldn't take two medications at once so I took this one for a bacterial infection, and I think its killing 2 birds with one stone.

I have been on Doxy since the 29th for possible pneumonia/sinus infection-deep cough, swollen nodes sick for almost three weeks.
I am pretty healthy at 39 but got this whopper that wouldn't let go.
The doc prescribed this Dox 100mg,along with Prednisone. My cough is clearing up,feel better overall, but have had very vivid, chaotic, and scattered dreams.
A little GERD (I have Barretts Esophagous so wouldn't feel too much hburn) today, but the main issue was the pill, so strong I projectile vommitted three times yesterday, have had major runs, and dry skin.
It works best for me after food and loads of water/vitamin water, and staying very hydrated. I drink a lemon ginger tea to soothe my stomach.
Other than that I am in Arizona and haven't had any sun-sensitivity issues.
I have had a headache as well for two days, but the vomitting could have brought that on, I almost popped a gasket it was so sudden.
Well, it seems this one is a doozy, get all of the facts on it-especially the NO DAIRY when taking it...
Hope all readers feel better!

After jsut 1 pill I had swollen hands, felt like head was swollen but it didin't look like it! Tremendously sore jaw and ears-like a very severe sinus infection. Intense head ache, felt like I was crawling out of my skin, fidgty-yet tired, severe muscle aches in upper body...This was after just one pill. I stopped and I was fine 24 hours later...none of the symptoms remained.

I have experienced negative side effects from doxycycline. I have had chest pains, headaches, and nausea. It is perscribed for a sinus infection but I think I would rather deal with the pain of sinus pressure than the side effects.

I have taken Doxy several times now and usually end up discontinuing use because of strange side effects. Once because of intense burning of my skin (lasted several days). Another time because of disorientation and headache. Now I am taking it for a sinus infection. Giving it one last shot. I have only taken two doses, one last night and one this morning; and I am already extremely nauseous and lightheaded. My doctor told me if I dont finish this, my infection may turn into pnuemonia. I guess i will suffer through it.
