I was diagnosed with the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia.on 6/18/08 the doctor prescribed doxcycl hyc100mg two times daily for 7 days for me and by 6/21/08 I felt miserable and very itchy and red in the vagina and by then I knew it had to be a yeast infection. This was a good drug that worked for me but I wish the doctor would have told me one of the side effects was a yeast infection. I also did take it once on an empty stomach and also felt nausea and dizziness, some diarrhea, and a little stomach pain but when I felt it coming on I ate something immediately. I would advise this drug but take precautions and when taking it.

I have to take Doxy for 2 weeks twice a day. I have all the same side effects as everyone has listed here... very down and depressed, itchy pimple rash all over legs, face, neck, chest and back of shoulders, cold sores, severe headache, bloating, stomach pain, tiredness, lack of interest in anything, dry mouth, tingling toes and anxiety. Can't wait to finish the course, but am disappointed to read that the side effects carry on after stopping, does anyone know how long it takes for them to subside?

Severe headache, fatigue, diarrhea, and nausea, stomach pain that you wouldn't believe. I have common side-effects to most antibiotics so I wasn't worried at first but now that I have read all these posts I am getting pretty nervous. Last night I was back in the ER for the second time in three days because the lymph nodes and glands in my neck were swollen. The doctor gave me a CT scan and discovered that I had acute bilateral infections in my lymphnodes. An infection that I didn't have before I started taking the medication. This drug is horrible and I don't recommend it to anyone.

Took only one Doxy, caused tremendous stomach pain. Subsided as day went on and felt ok. Went to bed and slept only a short time, awoke because of nightmares, hallucination type nightmares, very scary. I have checked around nightmares w/doxy are common. Very exhausted today will not take again until I hear from Md. Taking for Lyme Disease & I know symptoms can increase (herxing), but I believe this was side effect related.

The drug Doxycycline belongs to the tetracycline group of barrow spectrum antibiotics particularly aimed at killing gram-negative bacteria such as those causing Lyme disease, inhibition of malaria virus transcription, etc. The problem however with this drug is the severe side effects it brings about... Which ranges from all symptoms stated on this web page. It is therefore thought that one has to stop the drug in order to halt the occurrence of the side effects. WRONG! Do not stop doxycycline regardless of what pain or discomfort you are experiencing. It is important to always complete the dosage to the last grain as bacteria have a very high ability to develop resistance from this drug. ONly stop the drug if you develop adverse reactions or allergic reactions which can result in date. Such cases, fortunately are quite rare. Here are a few things to take/do to ease the symptoms.
Stomach Pain- Down as many glasses of water as you can. The pain is brought about by the drug still being present in the digestive system long after food has been absorbed. It is a slow acting drug, releasing its active agents gently into the human body. Hence, taking it with lots of food at d same time wont prevent the drug from causing stomach pain/cramps. Do this as often as you can.
Drowsiness-confusion- Steaming hot cup of tea. Tea doesn't react with the drug and revitalizes your brain.
Rash- An anti-histamine usually does the trick
Sunburn- Use a sunblock!
Lower back pain- This is a less frequent side effect but has been reported in some instances... causes a lot of discomfort. Pop two analgesics and take a 15minute walk. Clears up like magic.
Nausea- Metoclopramide Hcl... This eases off the nausea. It is not an antacid.
I hope I am able to be of some assistance. For more direct consultations, you can contact me on ******Get well soon.

I was given Doxycycline on Tuesday after having my wisdom teeth extracted as an infection preventative. I followed the directions carefully as I have always been very sensative to medications and wanted to be careful with this new one. Wednesday evening within minutes of taking the pill I was overcome with nausea. I began to vomit and with in an hour had severe chest/stomach pains just below my rib cage. The following morning I called the prescribing Dr. right away- The Dr. told me to stop taking the Doxycycline. It is now Saturday evening (3 full days later) and the horrible chest/stomach pain has not at all subsided. I have had a hard time functioning in this much pain and am eager for it to end, to say the least. On top of all of this I have also experienced bloating in my stomach and an intense amout of gas. (burping, etc.)
I realize I have obviously had a bad reaction to this medication, some people do and some people don't- it's the case with any drug. My main concern now is WHEN will these side effects end? How could two days on this medication have caused 3 additional days worth of such terrible pain? Should I contact my general physician on Monday, and if so is there even anything that they can do?
I have had drug reactions in the past, typically when one ends a medication one is also able to end the uncomfortable reactions of the medication. This is a nightmare....How long does this stuff stay in a person's system???? Scary thought, isn't it.

I was prescribed doxycycline for possible lyme disease as a precautionary measure after a tick bite followed by a rash and fever. I took only two doses, and since, have been so completely nauseous, it's difficult to function. I've had terrible acid reflux and get the shakes and horrible stomach pain if I don't eat immediately when I feel hungry. My stomach aches constantly and I haven't had a bowel movement for a week. It has been 5 days since I took the last dose.

I've been taking Doxycycline for about a month now. It seems to be helping my acne pretty good so far. I haven't had any nausea, vomitting, stomach pain or dizziness. Although, if not taken with a full glass of water this med will definately make you feel as though it has become stuck in your throat. I just now figured out why. I kept thinking I was just swallowing it wrong, and it felt like it had gotten stuck, and it gave me terrible heart burn that wasn't soothed by antacids. It's been much better now that I drink lot's of water when I take it. Make sure to drink plenty of water with this drug!

I started to take this for my acne about two weeks ago and so far i dont like it. I know it takes a while to see results with acne medicine and at the beginning, it can actually look worse, but that is not my problem. This medication seems to have more side effects that the acutane i took (and that required monthly blood tests). I've noticed these side effects:
-gas
-stomach pain
-nasuea
-slight energy loss
The whole stomach pain and nasuea is the worse part. I was told i have to take it in the morning and that I cant eat 2hrs before or after taking it... so i have to skip breakfast everyday. And if i do happen to eat, i get incredibly sick feeling. However, i have noticed that the more water i drink with it, the less sick feeling i get. I've been drinking about 3 full glasses of water.

My significant other took Doxycylene, 100 mg, twice a day for two weeks to treat a swollen lymph node under his arm. During the treatment he experienced nausea, stomach pain, rash and cold sweats, nothing too bad. 3 days after the last dose everything got significantly worse. It started with sever chest pain, so bad we went to the emergency room thinking it was a heart attack or blood clot. They found nothing and discharged him. Over the next 3 weeks he started vomitting, diahrea and developed jaundice. Constant queeziness and chest pain. After numerous tests, ultra sounds, MRCP, the doctor has ruled out various hepatitas's and every other disease he could think of. He's also rulled out any kind of bile duct blockage after the MRCP. Its now been 7 weeks since all this started, my friend has dropped 40 lb's (190 down to 152) and still dropping. Our doctor (gastro interologist) has admitted he's stumped and is currently contacting a professor in Miami as a last hope. The only thing our doctor keeps comming back to is the Doxycyclene and that my friend may have had that one rare acute reaction. We're frazzled and don't know what to do next.

I HATE DOXYCYCLINE.
I never thought I could get so sick from something that is supposed to help me out!
The doctor prescribed it to me for something that I may not have. But just to be sure he told me to take it for 10 days.
It is day 4 and I just cant take it anymore. The side effects are HELL. As soon as I started taking it, my skin felt weird, and now i have a bunch of red dots and rash.. ITCHES.
Not only that but the nausea, stomach pain and weird bowel movements are the worst! oh and the DEPRESSION. I am so tired everyday and I feel as though I want to kill myself. It is awful.
I refuse to take it , the pill is much worse than any disease or illness I've ever had. I honestly thought the symptoms were due to the problem i may have, but after reading this site, definitely it is the pill. Now, I'm so confused, I dont know what to do , if finish with them or just stop right away.

started taking Doxycycline for MRSA Staph infection. 2nd time having. Given along with Bactriban ointment for the nose. 1st time had, was prescribed Septra (trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole). Seemed to work, but disappointed when reappeared. Doc. thought Doxy would be more effective. Stomach burning like acid reflux. Relief some when only lite meal, like rice. Doctor prescribed 2 pills twice daily to start... had me vomiting and dizzy. Then settled to 1 pill twice daily. Stomach pain definite issue with this drug!

I began taking 100 mg x2 per day for ten days for a bacterial infection. I am 48 years old and I have Fibromyalgia and arthritis pain issues as well as other health problems. By day three of taking doxy, my pain issues increased dramatically. My legs burn and the pain the runs from the waist to the heels of my feet are not something that has happened to me before...thus, I surmize it is the doxy. My legs and feet burn and hurt so much that it is difficult to walk and to sleep as even resting them on the mattress keeps me awake at night. I tried taking it with a tbsp. of peanut butter and a small glass of milk and in 15 minutes I vomit. I need to have considerable food in my stomach and yet, I have great stomach pain that comes in waves. This is a very difficult medicine to take!

I've been taking Doxycycline 100mg once a day for the past three months for severe acne. I have experienced nausea and have been very close to vomitting when taking the pill on an empty stomach. Taking this pill before bedtime is a big mistake since the onset of stomach pain isn't immediate and usually occurs after 20 minutes or so. I now take the pill in the morning and a banana seems to do the trick for killing my stomach pain. In the past few days I've developed what feels like a stomach ulcer probably as a result of doubling my dosage for acne flare-ups. It causes acute stomach pain that comes in waves every 15 sec. and last for 5 sec. at a time. This pain is very severe. I have also experienced the tingling sensation (needles) in my hands when washing my hands but this happens only occassionly.

been taking for 8 days now. from the beginning, EXTREME nausea, stomach pain, after 4 days, ringing in ear. nonstop headache from the beginning. also lots of salivating and loss of appetite.
each day, i feel more and more tired, while the infection itself seems to be clearing (based on no more fevers or burning sensation where the infection was).
i hate this drug but fear to stop taking it because the pain of infection and with fever, the infection can spread. I'm going to finish all the way to the 14-day prescription and then take extra care to heal from the antiobiotic. If I wasn't worried about infection spreading - I'd NEVER take this drug.

My hubby & I are seeing a marriage counselor. She has seen him 5 times and me twice. She wants to work with my immune doc to suggest Neuronton. I'm not anxious or depressed. Been there, done that, knows what it feels like and I've told her this. I don't know what my hubby has said when I'm not there & they won't tell me. I've gone on line and read about this med, and it definitely sounds like it'd give me lots of probs. I had trouble with my thryroid but couldn't take meds for it (too high, then t...

Am on my second 3-week course of doxycycline for Lyme disease since the first go round didn't eradicate the infection. Have all the classic side effects mentioned, however the stomach ailments are GREATLY alleviated by taking a strong (70 billion parts per capsule) probiotic. Take it half way between the 2 doxycycline doses and although it isn't magic it does make a difference.
-- By bluereed | Reply | Send Private MailAlthough I have no appetite, I try to graze lightly on foods that appeal to me throughout the day and that seems to help with many of the horrific side effects.
Also, my MD suggested I take Aleve and NOT Ibuprofen for headaches since the Ibuprofen can cause a "headache" kickback (and causes stomach pain). Don't know if that's true, but the Aleve seems to help a little.
Worst side effects for me are utter exhaustion, dizziness, stomach pain, sore throat, and a head that hurts feels like it is filled with wet cotton. Also heart palpitations which may be part of the Lyme disease.
Hope some of this helps.
