I had been on Yaz for about 1 1/2 years with little to no problems until the last couple of months I began to get severely depressed and experienced suicidal thoughts about midway through the pack. The rest of the month I felt like I was in an emotional and mental fog. My husband recognized a difference in my behavior after a couple of months of starting yaz. I finally broke down and called my doctor. She decided to put me on Yasmin... now that I have read through some of the thousands of side effects of Yasmin on this website, I'm not so sure that anything is going to get any better....

Our daughter spent her 21st birthday in ICU, Sunday the 13th. I took her to the ER with shortness of breath, chest pain and nausea on Saturday afternoon. She has been on Yaz since February with only the mild symptoms of: loss of apetite, mild nausea and some abdominal cramping. She was put on this BC to regulate her periods and relieve menstrual pain as well as excessive dark facial hair growth. All 3 of these were relieved by Yaz.
She has now spent 1 week in the hospital (2 days in ICU) and will be on coumadin for 3 to 6 months due to a very large pulmonary embolism (size of my knee cap) that was putting the right side of her heart in distress. She also has multiple clots in her right lung.
I am shocked to read through this website and see all that has happened to so many women. She can never take oral BC again in her life. There are no blood test results that indicate she was even predisposed to this type of reaction and is not family history.

This birth control caused me to have fits of rage. I was highly irrational and just downright mean. Otherwise no problem but I had to stop.

Oh, My God! I was doing some research about some medicine I was prescribed by my doctor and was wondering what other people were saying about Yaz Birth Control Pill, and I must tell you I'm very surprised. I've been taking Yaz for exactly 2 years now, before it I've tried pretty much every kind that's on the market and had the most horrific side effects from them, not with Yaz though. I guess every person is different and what works for one doesn't mean it works for everyone else. However, I've been recommending it to everyone I know and people that have tried it - love it. I did experience some mild side effects, though, during my first few months. Before it, I had gained weight cause I stopped smoking a couple of months ago and the 1st month I took Yaz, I lost 15 pounds. I was amazed! I was told before I started it that it's like water pills and will not gain weight from it, my Dr. was right. I had no mood swings anymore, my period wasn't as long (my period come every 21 days and lasted for 8-9 days, with heavy bleeding and crucifying pain, especially the 1st days of my period) and I wasn't crying anymore from the terrible pain, I couldn't even feel like I had my period. The very down side for me was that I started developing brown spots all over my face and they started getting bigger and multiplied, but this pill gave me such comfort that I had to make the sacrifice and used a lot of foundation to cover it. Then all of the sudden my brown spots disappeared instantly on the six month of use and since then I've had no problems with Yaz, whatsoever. My skin is so clear, everyone that meets me compliment me on my complexion and many are so obviously jealous. Since Yaz, I pretty much have no mood swings or emotions whatsoever, I kind of feel like a man, I'm very calm, show no feelings, it takes a lot to get me off balance or to piss me off.
The 1st 3 months I started using it I had brown spotting, sometimes even seemed like bleeding and now I definitely feel like my libido has decreased, but knowing how I was before Yaz and having remembering the most terrible pain I felt when my period comes and no pain killer has ever worked on me, I must definitely say that the few side effects I've experienced are so definitely worth it. I'm not getting off Yaz anytime soon, I completely love it!
P.S. I'm 24 years old, started taking Yaz when I was 22, if you care to know my age. And before Yaz my Dr. has tried to put me on so many different birth control methods for many years, but none has survived me taking it for longer then 2 months until Yaz. I have a condition that can be treated by either birth control methods, sometimes by giving birth to a child or if neither don't work I had to have laser surgery every 2-3 years or even sooner. My doctor tried to put me on different birth controls over the years to full the hormones in my body, but from all I've tried I had such side effects. I was ovulating so much that it hurt to walk, I sometimes felt like I'd break my pelvic. I had constant infections from it and I guess because I live in Florida where the weather is so humid. I've tried changing my underwear every hour or even half hour in the summer to try to prevent getting yeast infection with still no luck. So, with Yaz I was reborn. I haven't had an infection since I started using it.
P.S.2 Oh, and whatever hair I have left unwaxed on my body is way less and no it didn't effect my scalp - I still have thick full hair on my head that grows fast. Plus my leg hair grows way slower then it used to and no I haven't change my hair removal products.
THANK YOU YAZ for making my life so much easier. I'll be forever grateful!

I have been on Yaz for about a year now, and during the last couple of months I have been experiencing HORRIBLE mood swings and absolutely NO sex drive whatsoever. When I first started taking it, the first night I had the worst stomach cramps I have ever experienced in my entire life. I was tired all the time and really irritable. I have just decided to change pills because Yaz has made me depressed, and EXTREMELY moody. My boyfriend has suggested on numerous occasions that I am manic depressive because I'm so up and down all the time... the littlest things set me off into a fit of rage =( Ugh!

I don't have a side effect to report, but I have read all of your responses. Over all they are 95% negative. The only thing I am wondering, is WHY you chose Yaz to begin with.
I have been thinking about taking Yaz to help with my severe PMDD. If you don't know what that is, basically it's like the moodiness side of PMS times 10. I am euphorically happy normally, lol, kind of like how happy a cocker spaniel is when their family gets home... except I don't piddle on the floor. About 5 days before my period starts I go into a very deep depression, I bloat, I am irritable, and my entire life suffers. I cry (wail is more like it) for absolutely NO reason... blah blah blah. But once I am about 2 or 3 days into my cycle it all passes and I am back to chipper me.
Long story short, I heard Yaz is supposed to be amazing to help stabilize emotions in people like me. How many of you started Yaz just as birth control, or as an acne control? How many of you took it for PMDD and it STILL didn't help?

I took Yaz for about 6 weeks. After week 4 I noticed I had heart palpitations, shortness of breath, abnormal mood swings - always upset and easily frustrated by the smallest things. The change in my mood was noticed by everyone from my family and boyfriend to co-workers and business associates. I myself noticed this big change. After week 5 I had a huge breakdown where I literally felt my heart thumping out of my chest...it felt like a heart attack (I can only guess). I could not breathe. I brushed it off as nothing (big mistake). Exactly 9 days later I was at work and the exact thing happened to me. This time I could not function - could not breathe, heart palpitations, the works!. I work in the medical field and so I my blood pressure was taken by a colleague and it was 168/108 on the left hand and 159/109 on the right (can you say OMG!!!). Sure enough I was rushed to the ER and they managed to bring my BP within normal range. The doctors told me I was knocking on the door of a pulmonary embolism(PE) (bolt clot in the lung) and/or a heart attack. I am a 24 y/o athletic, very fit, never even had a cold female who is extremely healthy. I take OC for PCOS for about 2+ yrs now. I made the switch from Yasmin to Yaz 6 weeks ago as I wanted to try something new with more 'so called' benefits (fewer periods and helping with moods swings that I also attribute to Yasmin).
I have done so much research and read so many experiences of other women on OC and none have as much reported MAJOR SIDE EFFECTS that Yaz and Yasmin...especially YAZ. While I agree with posts that notes that all OC have side effects; it should be noted well that YAZ is the worst.
Ladies...DO NOT TAKE YAZ IF YOU WANT TO LIVE! This is no joke.
I am happy to report that I am back to my happy healthy self. I am staying clear of all OC and will just live with my PCOS until I am ready to have kids.
Blood clots, PE, heart attack, HTN etc. is no joke. CHOOSE LIFE. They should take this drug off the market.
If you must take an OC, try ortho try-cyclen lo or talk to your doctor in details and to the health risk of them all and the one with the least side effects.
I appreciate this site for affording us ladies the opportunity to share our experiences, learn from the experiences of others and avoid a costly mistake.
God bless.

P.S. - DO NOT TAKE YAZ

Yaz gave me the worst acne I have ever had in my entire life.... I stopped taking it about two weeks ago, a week into my second pack, because I couldn't take it anymore... I've never had perfectly clear skin which is why I decided to take Yaz, because it claims to help clear acne. Then about a week into it I started getting absolutely disgusting acne!!! My face still isn't back to normal at all!!... This is the second birth control I've been on and the first time I've been on a pill in 3yrs... My doctor switched me to Balziva and I'm scarred to start taking it because three years ago ortho-tryclen lo made me depressed and Yaz turned me into a pizza face, I'm scarred to find out what Balziva is gonna do to me!!

I've been on Yaz for a month. I experienced headaches for about 3/4 of the month. I'm supposed to be on my period, according to the pack. I'm not.
I've been feeling "blue" all month, even angry. I'm a pretty passive person by nature, so this "blue" thing is not becoming. I've had issues falling asleep at night. I normally crave sweets and soda. Not on Yaz. I crave salty foods. On the bright of things, I haven't experienced bloating or sore boobs at all. I'm drinking more water than normal-so thirsty, might be all the pringles I've inhaled. I don't think this is the pill for me. The headaches are unbearable.

I took Yaz for a month and a half and ended up with gallbladder disease! Which there is no cure for and needed surgery to have it removed. This seems to be a risk with all oral contraceptives but I've taken other brands years ago for long periods of time and this never happened. My symptoms were severe pain (lasting several hours) after eating ANY food containing fat. I lived on toast and soup for over 2 months. This drug is evil.

I posted on the Yasmin page originally as I didn't think to look for the dyazide page. I also (41 years old but former elite athlete still in competition shape, non-drinker, non-smoker) suffered a bilateral pulmonary embolism after 6 months on Yaz. I have no history of clotting problems in my family. This stuff is bad stuff...

I went off the pill 12 years ago and started on Yaz in the summer of 2007. I had pretty significant mood swings for about two weeks on the first pack. In fact, it was like the worst PMS I've ever experienced, with my anger and rage surging up for no apparent reason. The mood swings were gone after my first period, though. The only other problem was that my first cycle lasted 10 days, the second 7 days, but by the third pack my periods completely regulated to a light, 4-day cycle.
Since the "old-school" pill had made me gain weight, I was expecting to do the same on Yaz. To my surprise, that didn't happen. Also, I didn't experience any PMS at all, before, during, or after my periods. I only went off Yaz because of surgery for fibroids on my uterus resulted in a uterine hysterectomy last month.
The older brands of birth control come with many warnings of potential blood clots and other side effects and, while I am sorry for the illnesses and losses people here have experienced with same, every prescription medication has its risks. Yaz was wonderful for me!

I've been on Yaz for about 2 years and I really like it. I am taking it for PCOS (so I don't have a choice to NOT be on BC) and so far, I have not experienced any of the problems other people have had. I did notice a decrease in sex drive, but I'm fairly certain this is due to my under-active thyroid.
At any rate, my doctor said that Yaz, like other BC methods, can deplete B vitamins from your system which can contribute to loss of sex drive. He suggested I start taking a High-Potency B vitamin (they come in standard doses) as well as DHL or DCL or something, I can't remember, 2-3x a week. I have seen my sex drive return, although it still isn't what it used to be.
Good luck to all of you with the other symptoms. I am shocked at the problems it has been causing and I'm horrified for each and every one of you. If you are like me and only have a few mild problems, talk to your doctor about some vitamins!

My gyno prescribed Yaz to regulate my periods since they were really heavy and lasted over a week causing me to become anemic. The 1st month was alright, I got no side-effects. During the 2nd month on this pill when my period came I had severe cramping, and my periods became even heavier! This time, it lasted over 20 days. Thank god I'm switching pills!

Please don't take Yaz if you have any alternative at all!
My 30-year-old, fit, non-smoking daughter is currently in the ICU after just the third pack of this KILLER drug, with a pulmonary embolism (major cause of sudden death in young women) and a clot in her leg. Thank God we got her to the ER in time--don't let it happen to you and your family. If you're taking it and get pains in your legs for no good reason, run, don't walk, to the nearest ER.

So far so good.
I was prescribed Yaz to help with my PCOS symptoms, and I'm still working on my first pack. I was told this medication had an ingredient that helped lower testosterone, so I decided I'd try it out to slow down the growth of unwanted hair.
The first few days I was extremely tired and was having strange dreams, and I would occasionally get an uncomfortable feeling in my chest. I had stopped exercising for a couple weeks, so I began again hoping it would help. The fatigue now is completely gone, and I'm not having mood swings. I lost a lot of weight in the first two weeks, but I'm sure it was mostly water weight.
My period is usually extremely painful, but this month I experienced almost no pain (which was awesome). My period lasted longer than usual, and I'm having spotting, but it's nothing unbearable. Too much caffeine seems to make the uncomfortable feeling in my chest come back, but other than that, I have no complaints.

I started taking Yaz about 8 weeks ago after being off birth control for 4 years. I expected my body to react to the pill, but not like this. I am constantly dizzy and ,despite getting about 9 hours of sleep each night, I can hardly keep my eyes open during the day. My "period" came 3 days into a new pill pack and lasted about 2 days...but I think maybe I still have it! The breakthrough bleeding is CONSTANT and it makes me feel dirty. I have also gained about 7 lbs. since I started this pill.
I have called and asked my doctor to change my script due to these symptoms as well as severe cramping that began in the first week. I look puffy and tired...it's not worth it.

I have been on yaz for a month now. I was taking apri before and was switched when I found out that I possibly had a cyst that has burst. I was in a lot of pain, but the gyno said that she thought taking birth control would help but didn't like what I was taking. So now for the past few weeks, I can't sleep, dizziness, headaches, crying hysterically for no reason, lack of sex drive, extreme fatigue, irritability, moody, feeling hopeless, feeling out of it, can't remember things very well, can't concentrate, and my eyes are sometimes blurry. I am hoping this is just an adjustment period. But after reading other peoples side effects, I am starting to wonder. I will wait another month or two, but if it doesn't stop, I am going back to apri.

I am at the end of my first pack of pills, YAZ.
I have a condition called Chiari and I also suffer from hormonal migraines. I started getting migraines on Thursday before I was to start my period on Sunday.
The difference is, not only did I get my typical migraines, I also became extremely nauseous. I was violently ill on Thursday night after taking my migraine pills (a common, weekly occurrence). I made it to work on Friday but ended up going straight home at 5pm.
I spent the entire weekend on my couch, with a cold wet washcloth on my face. I used a spray bottle to wet my hair to keep my head cool. The nausea never went away until I actually started Sunday afternoon.

I started taking the Yaz in the middle of December and i felt horrible from the very beginning, then the panic attacks happened when i was driving.at 2wks of taking this poisonous pill. They kept coming and I finally associated these attacks with Yaz. It is the only thing I am putting in my body and I have never had this before taking the Yaz. So I stopped on Friday had another attack on Sunday. How long before I stop having these attacks? Help!! My OBGYN think I am crazy and straight up says that EVERYONE she prescribes this too absolutely loves the Yaz

After reading everybody's experience with Yaz I have decided not to take Yaz. I just had this feeling like I should not take it ,like something is telling me no, and I have to go with my gut feeling and not take it, I am going to take Loestrin 24 one more month and then make an appt with my Doctor to talk to her about what I want to do and get her advice. I hope that they are not going to be mad at me after I called and got them to take me off Loestrin 24 and then they gave me 3 packs of Yaz, I just cannot take it after reading about all of the side effects, I just could not get peace over it so no Yaz for me, and so I still have two packs of Loestrin 24 and a RX too, but I am going to ask to be put back on ortho tri cyclen because it is what I know and my periods were regular on it. This week is supposed to be my period, and my last Loestrin pill was Tuesday and I still have not started, I am having headaches, cramps, leg aches, and I am having some nausea every now and then and this is not how I want to feel.
My periods were regular on ortho tri cyclen but the reason my doc took me off of it was because the last week (which was before my period) I was having headaches and having nausea but I would rather feel like that a week then feel the way I feel. I would go ahead and call the nurse but I am afraid she would tell me to try the Yaz because I have not even tried it yet and because she just called me on Monday and my husband picked up the Yaz on Tuesday, I just do not want to seem crazy or something, my body is just really weird about having reactions. Good luck to anyone else!

I am new to birth control. Last week was my third week on Yaz. The first 2 weeks on it, I was fine. No real symptoms, but the third week, I began having anxiety (which I have never had before) and my heart would race every now and then. Also, I had a major loss of appetite. I would have to make myself eat even though I felt like gagging. I would try to go to sleep, but the anxiety would be too bad. (I took my pill at 8:00 every night) So, I stopped taking them. Yesterday was my second day off of the pill and all I wanted to do was sleep. (I guess from the lack of sleep due to the anxiety/panic attacks) Today my appetite is slowly coming back.
I contacted my GYN and they said they have never heard of those side effects from Yaz...but I looked it up online and there are tons of women complaining of the same thing.
They now want me to try Loestrin...which I am very hesitant of. I don't want to get my body back to normal and then start with the same problems again.
I am getting married in October and of course we don't want a baby right away....I must say...the old school condoms are looking like a better option every day!

For about 6 months I experienced severe cognitive disturbances. I had trouble remembering things, and making basic connections. I also had chronic fatigue, and terrible headaches, severe depression, moodiness, trouble sleeping, and trouble making sentences. I was so out of it that I couldn't make the connection with the medicine. I was 16 at the time, and my doctor thought it was just normal teen issues or something equally absurd My eyesight became worse, and my usual ability to retain information in school was butchered. Once I got off it, I felt much better. I could think again, and no was no longer forgetting important things, like my best friends name. However, it has been a half year since I got off, and some of the symptoms still persist, although in a much less degree. I am afraid of permanent damage, especially with my cognitive ability.

By taking Yaz my estrogen level was lowered drastically which made sex extremely painful. I also had a horrible mood which I didn't attribute to the pill until I switched and saw a major improvement. I realize this won't effect everyone but if you are experiencing burning after sex, try switching BC to see if that helps...it did for me.
