Guaifenex and medication

My son is 25 and he started takng Guaifenex back in June for sinus infection. Since then he has been to emergency room 3 times and in the hospital twice--complains of pressure in upper jaw, chest tightness, and has chilling sensation along spine. Also his left side feels funny and he has been diagnosed with panic attacks and the doctor wants him to have a phsyc examination--he's not crazy just wants these wierd symptoms to go away. Has anyone had any long term affects after taking this drug?

I went to the doctor and he said I had the begining signs of an upper respiratory infection. He put me on this medication and told me it would help with the sinus pressure. Since I have been taking this medication I have had increased chest pain, coughing and sore throat. I decided to stop taking it this morning to see what would happen if I used just a regular sinus pill, and I actually felt better! I took one more dose of Guaifenex and I am right back where I started 2 days ago, feeling misserable and I can't breathe. I dont know where to go from here?...Has anyone else had increased chest pain?

It's sad to say but i'm almost glad to read the side effects ,I almost lost my mind sleeping 2 hours a night and in combination with Methylprednisolone I had wild mood swings almost to the point of selling my business I'll finish the meds now that I know whats going on and I can deal with it ,if I need this type of medication again I think I'll ask for different meds.

I took Guaifenex for the first time yesterday, and I might add for the last time yesterday. My blood pressure rose quickly, the Systolic rose 40 points and the Diastolic rose 30 points and my resting pulse rate raised over 40 bbm. When at the doctor in the same morning, both blood pressure and pulse were normal. I have never before had this type of reaction to any medication. My night sleep of 2am - 4am will not help me get better, no matter how "wonderful" of a decongestant this stuff is. It took two doses for this reaction to hit me. I am sure that this may not be the normal reaction - but if you get it watch out, because it is very scary.

I've been taking two tablets of Guaifenex PSE 600 twice a day for 3 days and today is the last time I do. I have the flu and so I should be getting plenty of rest, but as tired as I may be, I haven't gotten more than 4 hours of sleep a night since I started this. Normally I can sleep 10 hours at a time with no problem, but I haven't gotten to sleep before 5 am since I started this medication, I wake up 5 or 6 times through the night and can't sleep past 9, latest.

I have never had a reaction to medication before, this is absolutely ridiculous. It's clearing up my congestion but not letting me get the rest I need to get better, so I've just ended up sicker than when I went to the doctor. I'm not pleased at all.

My experience with this medication was in March 0f 1999. I was rushed to the emergency room by ambulance. My reaction was with my heart. The beat was very irregular and I felt as if it were going to race out of my chest. Once to the hospital, the doctor gave me some medication to counter act the reaction. It then made me sleep for a very long while. I can no loner take this or any other medication with a sulphur content in it.

I take this medication for allergies... only 1 every couple of days and it works wonderful. I have not had luck with anything else and absolutely NO side effects. Just wanted to put that out there for those who want to try it.

I have taken this medication on and off many time for the last three years. I have found that if I do not drink enough water, I suffer many of the same side effects mentioned in these postings.

I believe it is an excellent medication.... IF IF IF ..... you drink a lot of water along with it.....and by "a lot" I mean at least eight ounces every hour works. That works for me. You must keep yourself hydrated very well -- and you will then see how well this medication does work.

Hmm... but for me the ethex brand guaifenex perscribed to me has been like speed, i forst got it on a wednesday night took 2, which was recomended by my doctor, and i didnt sleep or eat a full meal until friday night when i didnt take the second dose of medication, and also drank a little that night. During those few days however i did continue taking my medicine, but sometimes not 2 twice a day. Basicaly i felt like i was on some amphetamine or speed for about 2 days straight. However i did not find the experience to be of any nuicance. But now about 4 days after starting the medicine, i have a rash on my hands and feet and the symptoms comply with hand foot and mouth disease, but actualy i think this is the real sickness i was prescribed to guaifinexe for, since the doctor never gave me an actual name for the virus

My doctor prescribed me Guaifenex for a sinus infection along with trimethobenx for upset stomach along with advair ( a powder inhaler) never knew why she prescribed all of this medication just for a sinus infection. I stopped taken the advair an experienced shortness of breath, bad headaches, but one things for sure I only eat one meal a day. Oh by the way I can't sleep at night and extremely tired in the morning to start the cycle all over again the next day. It leave a very nasty taste in my mouth i'm constantly brushing my tongue it leave a coating on it. The drainage I can never cough up and my ears has been clogged since I started these meds. I take tylenol pm just to sleep. Something to think about before taking this medication. You get it for a sinus infection but end up with a headache.

This is the last time I will take this medication combined with P-seudeprine. My doctor prescribed this combined dosasge of medicine to get ride of ear inflammation/congestion but it did not work. Instead it gave me a tinnitus (ringing in the ear) anxiety attack nervousness, panic, elevated blood pressure and insomia. This is the first time I ever had this feelings. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE unless you have to.

I was just wondering what those of you who stopped taking the medication did, to get rid of your sinus problem? I need an alternative.

started taking this 3 days ago, since ive been unable to sleep at night, sometimes get mild headaches, feel extremely anxious and by far the worst of all have such severe drymouth that my tounge gets stuck to the roof of my mouth, the drymouth is so severe that i havent been able to eat since i started taking this medication

I took my first guaifenx tablet yesterday and have yet to go to sleep! Not only was my heart beating out of my chest - I was experiencing the worst headache I have ever had in my life. I will NEVER take another one of these horrible pills again and I am amazed that my doctor perscribed this medication for me.

Warning! Never take medication prescribed for someone else, and always check for serious side effects. Since having chest and sinus congestion for three months, I decided to take my son's left over guaifenex. After three days, I experienced heart palpitations unlike anything else before. I also had a weird cold sensation, extremely hard to warm up. After a night's sleep, my heart rate has not yet returned to normal. I am horrified to know that this potentially harmful medication was prescribed to my then 11 yr. old child.

I was suffering with a cough and congestion around Thanksgiving, which waned and came back when my kids inoculated me with the FLU!
I was already dying with the virus, so the "sponge head and tongue" and super dry nosrtils side effects from GUAiFENEX were not too unpleasant.
I did feel bad more from the medication after 4-6 days when the flu was clearing up, so I stopped taking it.
Here I am 15 days after stopping and I am feeling almost normal.
I am glad I did not experience some symptoms of the flu that would have made the GUAiFENEX unbearable to take.

I had a wonderful experience after taking this drug. I actually slept better, was more relaxed and for some reason, got all my office work done. All my files were in order and my whole office was organized. I have never been able to work as efficiently as when I was taking this medication. No amount of caffeine compares to this drug! I took one per day. I had no heart palpitations or headaches. I recently found out I may have adult ADD and my physician is very curious to know the ingredients in this drug, as they will be useful in prescribing an appropriate medication for the ADD.

Then do you not find it strange that all these people have had the same symptoms? My husband had been experiencing horrible side effects for days before he finally asked me to find out something about this medication and I came across this site. I had taken this medication last fall and had the same horrible side effects. I didn't lay eyes on this website until the day I posted his side effects, June 13.

In some cases, yes, people may read about these problems and begin to imagine they're having the same ones. I can vouch that we had these symptoms before seeing this site, and we were shocked that so many other people were experiencing the same things. Sudafed may have the same active ingredient, but Guaifenix may have it in a stronger concentration, or it may contain other ingredients that cause people to react differently to the pseudoephedrine. Who knows?

I've been taking this medication for 9 days and I've been feeling speedy, lack of apetite, nervouss, high,,,I feel my head is disconnected from body.. I though I was loosing my mind.. I am so glad I found this site. I have one more day left, but can't take it anymore,, I am stopping this tonight.

I think my initial posting just got lost (!). I apologize if this ends up to be a repeat. I was taking Guaifenex 600 mg 2 times a day for about 4 weeks for sinus troubles and then began to notice heart palpitations any time I did anything active. After about 5 days of this, I finally realized it must be the medication and I stopped it. Now it has been a week exactly since my last pill. THe strong palpitations have stopped (that took about 5 days to end) but I still don't feel right - there is a heaviness in my chest and sometimes my heart seems to beat erratically, although I am having no more strong palpitations. My doctor and pharmacist both say that I should feel fine now but does anyone have any personal experience with side effects lasting a week or longer after discontinuing this drug?

After taking this medication for one week I felt worse than before I started. I've had continous throbbing in my head, no appetite, no sleep and extremely dry mouth. I thought this medicine was going to make me feel better. After reading this, I'm throwing them out today.

My husband took this for 3 or 4 days. He couldn't sleep, had terrible leg cramps, mild vomiting, mood swings, he felt hot and sweaty, couldn't get enough to drink but didn't want anything to eat. I had also taken this medication last fall, but felt so lousy I quit after 2 days. I can't remember the specifics; I just felt horrible. He decided to quit taking this medication this morning, and he actually feels like a human again tonight. We will *never* take this stuff again.

Taking this with Biaxin XL made me VERY ILL. It began with a major migrain and then Vomiting non stop for 2 1/2 days with burning feeling in lower abdoman.I was being treated for sinusitis. I will never take this medication again.

hAd to call doctor and told him that I could not sleep since I started this medication for congestion. He told me to take only 1 pill in morning and eat with it so it would not upset stomach. So I started taking guaifenex at 6:00 am in the moring, have not had anymore problems.

I was prescribed this drug for excessive mucus/sore throat/chest congestion. Four days later, I developed a rash on my neck that spread to my chest and lower face. I stopped taking the medication and started to research it. Turns out I have also had the jitters in the middle of the night. I lost weight I didn't need to be losing. There was a persistent tingling in my fingers. The sore throat and congestion are cleared, but I am waiting to see if the rash goes away completely now that I'm off the pills.

It's not 3:15 am, but I was still up at 3am this morning :-( I'm experiencing almost all of these symptoms as well. I've been unable to sleep since I started taking this a few days ago and I feel like my heart rate is thru the roof! Poor sleep patterns, hot flashes, increased heart rate, lack of ambition, axious and moodyness. I've had them all. I thought I was going crazy! Last night, I even thought I might be having an anxiety attack, which started me thinking that it might be this medication. Before I started taking this, I was so completely calm and relaxed, except for the cold. I'm so glad I found this website. Thanks.

I'm so glad that I logged onto this site - I have all of these side effects. After reading this, I immediately called my doctor for another medication and threw remaining pills away. I thought I was starting to lose my mind !!! Only took one tablet for three days and couldn't sleep starting with the first night. Next two nights I was completely restless with horrible leg cramps that last all day. Had extreme thirst during night, with hot flashes. It's absolutely the worst medication that I have ever taken. I will never take another medication without first checking this website for side effects. Thanks.

I like this medication so much I gave my daughter and her boyfriend some for their congestion and ear aches. Now they tell me they want to be alone more. I am not sure if the medicine increased their libido or not.

Unable to sleep, headache, loss of appetite, don't know if I'm having hot flashes or feeling is caused by Guaifenex. Called pharmacist after first sleepless night, was told to just take one pill in the morning and discontinue the second pill. Still not sleeping. Am stopping medication after three days.

My head tingles when I take this medication

Low grade and persistant abdominal pain when taking this medication.

About an hour after taking this medication I felt the muscles in my legs begin to ache. Especially right behinds my knees.

extreme mood changes (depression, anger) occured in the first 24-48 hours after taking this medication... these changes were alleviated after I ceased taking doses

On April 21st I posted my reactions with only taking 1/2 of the 600 mg tablet that was prescribed. Today, April 23rd, I have decided to stop taking this medication. I haven't been able to sleep well for the past two nights and I have had to toss covers off of me throughout each night because of feeling warm to hot. I feel like I'm speeding inside! I have felt extreme fatigue throughout each day. This is bad stuff...take only with caution, if not at all! (Try some other expectorant)

Took this medication Guaifnex PSE for three days with extramly positive results. No side effects what so ever

When I take this medication, about a 1/2 hour later I get cramp in my legs, I get a bad headache, and I only get a few hour of sleep. I only been on the medication 2 days.

The first time this medication was prescribed for me I could not sleep. It makes me cough all the time, and at night it makes me cough until I vomit. The second time the doctor prescribed a different dosage/medication but it was still Guaifenex. Same results. I have called to request a change in prescription.

This medication makes me hot and sick at my stomach.
