I was just prescribed the Imitrex nasal spray. I took it for the first time today. The first thing that happened was my nose felt like it was on fire then i had a horrible bitter taste in my mouth and the back of my throat. About 10mins after i took it i throw up and my stomach started to hurt. Plus the bitter taste was still there and nothing but time made it go away. My headache went away true enough but I would rather suffer a migraine then go through that again. And my headache came back not too long afterwards.

I have been taking Imitrex for 7 years now. I cut them in half...not sure if I should though. Anyway, I think I may have finally realized what could be the cause of these migraines. Just 6 weeks after my son was born, I got an IUD with hormones. I started getting migraines about 3 months later but I did not put it together. Now I have the NUVARING which is FULL of hormones and am up to about 10 migraines a month...I feel stupid I didn't connect it sooner. I am not 100% sure but I am off all birth control as of a week ago and am just waiting to see how this month goes. My husband made an appointment to get the snipped so I never have to be on BC again.
I hope this helps because I am scared to keep taking Imitrex for the rest of my life and I want to be the fun person I used to be!
Thanks for all your comments, it is great to have somewhere to turn!

I am so glad I stumbled upon this site. I was prescribed Imitrex for my migraines. I got a migraine at work one day and took Imitrex, it made me so sick, I couldnt move, I broke out in a cold sweat, my body started burning, the nasty taste in my mouth and the nausea was worse than the headache. I was so weak, I couldnt find my way to tell anyone I was sick so I could go home and I felt so bad I probably wouldn't have been able to drive anyway. After about 1 1/2 hours, the sick feelings subsided somewhat, and I decided I will never again take another Imitrex. I would rather suffer, and I don't want to ask my doctor for something else, because I don't think I could stomach any more horrific side effects from a new med.

I no longer take Imitrex as it makes my migraines 100x worse, more frequent; but I was reading following side affects everyone has.... Ive dealt with the queasiness, feeling lethargic and such....
But some of the ones not listed that I had was extreme abdominal and stomach cramping where I was in fetal position (i kid you not), my back felt as if i had a warm heating pad to it (kind of a benefit on cold days!) and from the calves down, I felt as if I were walking around with 25 pound weights on both legs; I felt very weak and could barely move.
Anybody ever experience any of this!? :(

Roughly 8-9 hours after taking Imitrex, I often get excruciating kidney pain that can last up to 8 hours. It feels like broken glass passing through my kidneys. I always try to drink LOTS of water when I take Imitrex, to minimize the kidney pain. Is the Imitrex and ensuing kidney pain worth it? I ask myself that question every time I have a migraine.

Beware!!! I took this for years and those warm feelings in the neck, face, and shoulders now are persistent even after not taking it for over 2 years now.
THANKS DR. AND BIG PHARMA....I truly believe that this medication has damaged the nerves in my neck and cheeks...
I am waiting to see if others experience this...and hope a class action can be started...
AVOID THIS MEDICATION AT ALL COSTS...my first tip off was when my Dr. said she would wonder how my heart would be at 60..i said, WHY? Oh because of using Imitrex all these years! HELLO...no one ever said,oh by taking this you are increasing your risk of heart problems down the road..
I NEVER WOULD OF STARTED..
Seek alternate routes for migraine help..find a good Naturopathic Dr. and even a chiropractor...they can help a lot of headache sufferers..
REMEMBER...FLUSH THOSE IMTIREX PILLS>..THEY ARE BAD...
If I had even suspected this pain in my cheek and neck I would not of taken a single pill...
The headaches go away..this pain is here a lot...not every day, but more days than I got headaches..
THANKS AGAIN BIG PHARMA>....
You'll be hearing from me if a lawsuit finally comes around.

I had a shot of Imitrex in the hospital for a migraine and it made me feel like my head was on fire!!! I hated it so much. They gave it to me as a perscription in pill from the next day so I thought maybe since the other one was a shot this wouldn't be so bad. I took it with my husband home because I was afraid to take it alone. I felt fine for the first 10 min then my head started to burn and my whole body started to ache and I could not fall asleep it was horrible!! It got rid of my headache but I rather have the head ache than having my body feel like its dying!!

The first time I took imitrx it was through a shot at the octors office and it was horrible, I felt the liquid go through my body and it felt like fire through my blood all over my body, It was very unpleasant...after a while the headache went away...the second time I took it, it was in a pill form and it was horrible as well, the burning sensation came again and it made my headache worse, after that i threw away the rest of the imitrex I had..I would not recommend it

I took Imitrex for the first and my experience started 1/2 hour after I took it. I turned very pale white,my face swelled up I could not breath heart racing so fast I thought that my heart was going to come of my chest, I then became very dizzy and very tired and my arms and legs felt so limp like they were not even there.I could not even think so I layed down and fell asleep and didn't wake up till hours later. My DR. told me I was lucky.
p.s.
Be aware of all your side affects and make sure you ask your Dr.or pharmacy about counteracting with other meds that you take if any.. Imitrex

Question...I have had migraines for most of my life, the first one I remember was when I was 7. I cannot stomach narcotic pain relievers and was thrilled when Imitrex came out. I took it for years. The only side effects I had were a warm rush, like an alcohol buzz, and sleepiness. Then, 5 years ago I was diagnosed with severe mitral regurgitation. My doctor took me off Imitrex right away and switched me to Maxalt, which I also love. It works great. I had open heart in 2001 to fix the mitral valve, then early in 2005 discovered I have tricuspid regurgitation. No surgery as of yet, thank God. I am on disability for the first heart problem and medicare and medical assistance will no longer cover the Maxalt, only the Imitrex. I took one the other day and almost had to go to the ER. I could barely move, breathe, or speak. Thankfully, after an hour or so, the symptoms subsided. But it really scared me. Now my doctor is giving me all the samples he can of Maxalt that they get in the office.
I am wondering if there is a connection between vavular disease and Imitrex? Has anyone had any of these problems?

I have been on imitrex and atenolol for a week. It has caused pain in the right side of my neck that runs through my right arm.I'm trying to stop my headaches, not cause more pain. Ithink the medication is unsafe if you have to use a low dose blood preasure medicine with it. Imitrex, and it's counterparts shuold be pulled from the market! It all stems from doctors trying not to prescribe narcotic type medication for headaches.

I have had migraines ever since I was 18. I am now 23. I had been taking the Imetrex pills all that time. Sometimes they worked and and other times not. Just depended on when I got the medication into my system. Usually for me I still had to take 2 to get the migraine to subside. I am not taking the Imetrex shot where I inject it myself. It give me much better relief and saves me trips to the ER or doctors office for shots. I get them so bad that I end up at either of those places, but the Imetrex shot has helped minimize those numbers considerably.

Imitrex will stop my migraines in a short amount of time. It is a godsend. Stops the pain and also stops the nausea.
I do, however, have aftereffects: usually back pain later that day. Also, grogginess and fatigue. It is still worth taking Imitrex, though.
For me, it is best to take it as early as I realize the headache is a migraine, instead of waiting too long til the headache is going strong; harder to stop the pain once it has reached that point.

I personally take the imitrex nasal spray. The only side effect that I had was the nasty taste in my mouth about 5 minutes of taking Imitrex. It lasts for about 5 minutes and then the headache and the nasty taste is gone. I really like Imitrex and I plan to keep taking it as needed.

My head aches never result from stress. They always hit when I am most relaxed and content. They often begin with a few yawns.
I have been taking Imitrex for several years for migraine headaches. Overall, it is the best medication I have found. Frequent use does raise my blood pressure. On a few occasions, I have been very sick with the head ache. By sick I mean nauseated, lethargic, sleepy, depressed, extremely weak and highly sensitive to light and sound. On these occasions, as soon as the head ache is gone, the other symptoms are also gone. Occasionally I have found that with the more severe head aches, once I get relief, I am completely unable to go to sleep for about 12 hours regardless what hour of the day or night I got relief of the head ache, and that is after taking more than one sleep medication. Have any more of you experienced similar insomnia?
I am a nurse. I have taken Imitrex by mouth, nasal spray and injection. The injection works much faster and much better for me. I am 58 years old and have had these head aches since my earliest childhood memories.
Good luck with your migraines. They certainly destroy quality of life.

im taking imitrex and i love it. i have no real side effects and they take care of the headaches in a decent time. the only problem i have found is my body becomes reliant on it and i soon get headaches spontaniously. other then that it really works. i have had the shot too. it takes away the pain quicker however it made me a little disoriented and tired.

I took Imitrex the first time and I thought I was going to freak out. WOW! My throat was tight and I was burning all over. Then my arms and legs hurt so bad I could not move. The headache went away after all of that. I did not try it again for a month and then I got another bad headache and I thought that I would try it again. It did the same thing to me. I thought that I was going to die. I promised the Lord if He let me live, I would never take another one. And, I am keeping my promise just as He did. There are better alternatives to headaches.

This happened my first and second time while taking Imitrex 100 mg. I have this burning/firey sensation that runs through my body causing heat flashes. I also have a lot of joint stiffness throughout my body. It also has left me feeling really groggy/tired.

I took 100 mg Imitrex and it didn't touch the headache - 3 hours later took another and a phenegrin (sp?) and within a very short time could barely move - every muscle in my body and every joint hurt - I could barely walk - could barely even turn in the bed - I'm 53 and you would have thought I was 103. This lasted about 12 hours. This has happened to me the last two times I have had a migraine and took the Imitrex.

I have had both the Imitrex pill and injection . The shot seemed to work alot better with the migraine pain and less for my nausea. The E.R. Doctor gave me two of the Imitrex pills for future Migraines. About 3 months went by and it hit me while taking my husbands 87 year old grandmother and my 3 yeat old son camping. I felt the shooting pain and blurred vision in my right eye and luckily had my pill to try. This was the first time I had tried the pill and was not even prepared for the what was about to happen. After 15 min. of the taking the pill I felt so hot like someone had just shot boiling water in my veins. There was no way I could have did anything the pain, nausea, and numbness were much more for me to handle. My husband had to come had stay with us and in one hour my migraine was tolerable, but the imitrex still left me very uncomfortable.

I have taken Imitrex tablet on and off over 3 years, I have had burning sensations, blurred vision and no muscle control, I felt like I was in a daze and had dry mouth as well as pains. I had been using a beta blocker to combat the migraines day to day but with using Imitrex I gained poor judgement and lose of memory, upon talking to my doctor I stppoed taking both drugs and have not had any side efeects in 3 months

Classic Migraine, sensitivity to light, nausea, extreme pressure and blurred vision. Tried everything else, finally Imitrex. First 30 min. I felt a cold sensation, especially in my facial area. Felt as if my bloodstream was flowing again. Then, suddenly realized I felt like myself again. My concern, women in my family have a very strong history of high bp & strokes around age 50 (I'm 34)... have I found my miracle drug or am I putting myself at a higher risk for more serious dangers?

I am nineteen years old and have had migraines for most of my life. I've tried nearly everything for them , and imitres is one of the only things that makes them tolerable. However, I've found that as I continue taking the drug, i have become lethargic, chronically tired, and down in spirits. My appetite has changed, and my weight flunctuates constantly. I haven't noticed anyone else with these side effects, other than people who take maxalt. Is it just me? Please contact me... this is really starting to interfere with my life.

I have chronic migraine headaches and I was first prescribed Imitrex. All 4 times I gave it a chance it did not work. Since then, I have been prescribed 1 other migraine medicine which didn't work, a barbiturate to be taken just for headaches, which didn't work for the headache but made me very loopy then depressed, then a strong pain pill that did nothing for my headache but made me very relaxed, so I just layed on the bed for 4 hours. My doctor wanted me to get an MRI then go to a specialist who wanted to prescribe a medication that I would have to take 5 days a week. Now, I get kelation therapy once a month, which gets rid of high levels of metals and toxins in your body, and I have not had a bad migraine since, only a slight headache every once in a while.
