When I first started taking Januvia it was like a god send to me. My bs dropped and I started losing weight. Since sugars were not low enough, I started taking janumet. A1C results were consistently 6.3 even tho' I ate anything I liked. Have taken Janumet for almost a year now and weight is 135lbs (height is 5'3"). Nice, since I just couldn't lose weight earlier (also have an under active thyroid and a sweet tooth). I recently experienced my first hot flash in an air conditioned room no less (am 46 yrs old). Started having migraines around my period. Left shoulder hurt when I raised my arm or reached behind me. Digestive system was a mess. Never experienced high blood pressure but had my first high BP reading at my last check up. Stopped Janumet after reading posts here and started feeling better right away. Digestion is normal. Don't know what to do now.

My husband was diagnosed with Type2 diabetes Sept. 30, 2008. He took the Janumet 50/1000 samples 2 times a day like the doctor told him to. His bs was very good (less than 110). He then switched to 50/500 about the 3rd week of October. His bs still fine. But he started having diarrhea many times a day and through the night.

He quit taking the janumet and about 5-6 days later the diarrhea changed to soft bm's. And he started to feel better, and then his bs would go up again. So he took 2 days of Janumet, diarrhea for 5-6 days(and not taking J.).

The doctor gave him separate prescriptions for januvia and metformin. My husband took 2 half pills a day of the januvia(100mg). and after 2 days, the diarrhea started again.

This is awful, just awful!

November, 2008 I started Januvia about 3 months ago while also taking metformin, glimeride. I previously took Actos but was gaining a lot of weight. Actos replaced the Avandia. The first few weeks on Avandia I seemed fine and the bs was okay. Gradually it increased along with severe painful spasms in my legs, trunk and daily in my neck. Eventually my hands began cramping. I also became severely constipated which is quite unusual for me. I then developed a series of upper respiratory infections. Since I was feeling awful I decided to research Januvia and its side effects. The manufacturer mentions the infections but not the others. As an experiment, I stopped taking the Januvia and within about 5 days, the painful leg/trunk spasms began to disappear. I'm contacting my doctor this week to find me a new drug....hopefully not insulin.

My husband started januvia a few months ago, in addition to his lipitor and benazepril and glumetza, which he was already taking for some time. Since starting I have noticed him being tired, irritable (almost angry), and short on patience in general. He has not complained of muscle pain, but has commented about having less hair. When I mention the mood/behavior changes, he tells me I'm wrong, he feels just fine. He won't discuss it with his doctor.
Has anyone else heard of or seen this effect? I have read only one or two comments along this line. It didn't happen all at once, change came over time. Think about it, ask the people you live with.
Thanks, good luck to all

In addition to night sweats (which were not a problem for me during menopause), I've had a headache for the month I've been on Januvia. Shoulder & knee pain have increased - I went to an orthopedist; didn't know it might be Januvia until reading these posts. My libido has disappeared entirely! I have absolutely no desire for sex; in fact I find it an irritation. This has NEVER been a problem for me. Has anyone else experienced this as a side effect of Januvia? I quit my Januvia this morning; it didn't affect my blood sugars at all. Going back to low-carb eating brought things under control again.

I have felt poorly since October 2006. Sugar levels ranging from the 450-550 range. My G.P. who is a fantastic dr. put me on Januvia in January of 2007. Range of sugar levels did not change much Sent me for blood work found many abnormalities and in March 2007 I was diagnosed with a bone marrow plasma cell cancer call multiple myeloma (not a side effect of Januvia I'm sure). I am I'm the hospital now for a second time because of severe abdominal cramping. Looks like lower bowel problems. Have not been on Januvia for five days now. ***************My right shoulder feels better, I can raise my arm above my head, no night sweats, no bloody nose, my eczema is clearing up, no pain in joints or rest of my body (thought pain was associated with cancer which is considered inactive since April 2008, I have slept through the night, no pain meds for the last three days, no nightmares, no stomach pain, no coughing, chest not feeling congested, I can get out of bed w/out having to stand for a few minutes by the bed-side because of dizziness, not feeling like a truck ran over me in the middle of the night in the last three days, and most of all I have more energy. To many side effects !!! All of these side effects I thought were a possible result of my cancer although my oncologist did not think so and we still believed that there was some other underlying problem(s). THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM(S) IS JANUVIA !!! Thanks for reading. God Bless You All. Great Health to All.

I have been experiencing the following side effects after taking Januvia for the last year. Night sweats, nightmares, GA (which is fatty tumors on my left forearm I have about 40 of them), arthritic type pain in my left shoulder and left hip that radiates down the arm and leg. eczema on both hands SEVERE. I have quit taking the blood pressure medicine (used only as precautionary) cholesterol meds, and prozac for a week now and am very sternly watching my diet!!! and exercise regularly, I have yet to quit my diabetic medicine but will quit one at a time to figure out which is causing my side effects. I believe the drug companies are making a killing off all these drugs that make me feel like crap. I am taking more herbs, vitamins and like I said eating HEALTHY. I won't even use splenda or sweet and low, Have been using Stevia if I use any sweeteners at all.

Extreme body heat, feels like I am on fire. This is worse than
the worst hot flashes I ever had when going through the change.

I am 66 years of age, be 67 in 3 months. Been taking Januvia
for 3 months.

This is not low blood sugar, it has happened at all hours.
Before a meal, after a meal in the middle of the night.

It is just like hot flashes but worse.

My Dr. has offered to put me on HRT.

Not to mention I am on a hundred mg. once a day and bs is still not in the normal range. Go to the Dr. tomorrow have to get this changed.

the samples from the doctor worked great! started a new bottle of another 3 months supply, and BS went to 400! a week ago, started to get hives every 3-4 days.now, every day at night, 12 hrs. after taking Januvia, hives break out on back. waist, buttocks, arms.was in ER yesterday, they said rash from Januvia unlikely, because they HAVEN'T SEEN IT BEFORE. After insulin injections, BS only got down to 295. Afraid to eat, 9 hrs. later had a tomato and cucumber sandwich, and BS went back up to 360. My doctor added Metformin to Januvia, and I am now once again with horrible diarrhea, after only one dose of 500mg Met. BS is still sky high, and the ER didn't seem too concerned. Anyone ever hear of hives from Januvia? HELP!!

Wow. I started taking this when it first came out, a couple of years ago. I had DM w/uncontrollable BS's. BS's came down significantly. But now, a couple of years later, I've been experiencing a few night terrors, when first put on insulin and Januvia, I gained 20# and can't! get them off. I also have fibromyalgia,...so I didn't even think about the Januvia possibly accelerating, increasing, or changing what was going on with the fibro.

I get violently sick anything with Metformin, and swell up like an air balloon (gained 50! lbs. on the Avandia & Actos (MD screwed up and gave me both in maximum dose--I've had leg swelling ever since.) Anyone have any leg swelling/edema? They keep trying to put me on anti-depressants..I've had "real" depression before, and I don't have that kind of feeling, just exhausted, like I can't get going...fibro...or Januvia?

Has anyone experienced excessive weight gain using Januvia? About 13 months ago I started taking J. and I've not lost any weight since that time. I had Lap-band surgery 19 months ago lost 58 lbs the first 7 months, started the Januvia, had what I thought was Lap-band problems, gained a few pounds and the few pounds are now a plus 40. I've spoken to a pharmacist and he says there cannot be any connection to Januvia, however I've begun to question Januvia as the advertisements on TV state that Januvia has not been tested with insulin and I'm taking Lantus at night and Januvia in AM. Januvia can be used with insulin at the description of the Doctor???? I'm very concerned about myself and Januvia. Any comments 2bears

I started Januvia 5 months back and have had fantastic fasting sugar level. I have dawn syndrome but Januvia put a stop to it. However, my hair is severe. My hair falls like leaves from a tree in autumn - all through the day. I am going to switch back to Amaryl instead of Januvia with my Metforming ER.

I was taking Avandia since I found out I had Diabetes in 2000 . After all the bad news that was confirmed in 2007, I switched to Metformin then to Metformin and Januvia. The first three months after taking the Januvia, my blood pressure was high and the protein level in my urine increased. I was taking the Enalipril for at least 5 years for my kidneys . I never had high blood pressure. My doctor increased the Enalipril and three months later my blood pressure was still high and protein level more than doubled. I think there is a strong connection because it started right after I stated taking the Januvia. Any one else have this happen?

Hello All,

Regarding the first post I wrote, immediately below this one: I meant to say that I noticed the depression and anxiety increasing when I INCREASED the JANUVIA dosage from 1/2 a tab twice a day to 1 tab twice a day. I had thought that the SINGULAIR was the only reason for the depression and anxiety increasing/resuming but instead it went something like this: I began JANUVIA then started the SINGULAIR; perhaps the JANUVIA woud not have started the increased symptoms/side-effects until at the higher dose which I now take OR until COMBINED with the SINGULAIR. In either event, I now have see these symptoms of depression and anxiety returning and increasing, significantly, and have thereby stopped the JANUVIA until at least one week has transpired; whereupon I will begin it for a few days and note all side-effects and symptoms to present to my physician as proof of a pattern from the ingestion of JANUVIA.

Again, thank you for reading this and may you all have much better health and wonderful, health-conscious lives!

Hello All, First let me say that I am sooo sorry for everyone's symptoms and that they are likely a side-effect of the Miracle Drug Januvia! I am on Glipizide which I fought my 'ex-physician' about continuing to take for several years, since I am a nurse and through research had found that this drug is really only an initial medication used for the new Type II (2) Diabetic. You don't want to know that I've been on it (in one form or another - Glucotrol & Glyburide also versions of same drug) for nearly 15 years! I had retired from nursing and wasn't exposed to meds-dispensing and was just trying to live and deal with DM with the dubious 'care' by physicians who just didn't give a hoot about me or my status. I'd tried Metformin when it first came on the market again, over a decade ago, it made me so violently ill that I would have to stop and vomit out the passenger side of my vehicle, on the shoulder of very busy California freeways. My doctor had told me that it must've been IBS - noooooo, it was the Metformin because within 24 hours I wasn't vomiting, in 48 I no longer had severe abdominal pain/bloating/diarrhea and within another couple of days I was no longer severely nauseated. The nausea reminded me of 'pregnancy-related' nausea which for you ladies out there, remember that it is worse than average nausea that is relieved by vomiting. So when my new physician who is a Kidney Specialist, Endocrinologist and Specializing also in Diabetes wanted me to go onto Januvia ~ well, I was skeptical to say the least. Having said that I found myself blythely going ahead without checking the known side-effects and taking first half a tab twice a day and then one tab twice a day. I was delighted that my blood sugars begin to drop immediately; however, also immediately, were the following symptoms on JANUVIA: severe all-over-body muscle cramps/spasms which include my trunk (body), limbs including hands, numbness in my hands (I type a lot in my work but have NEVER experienced anything like this in my hands) - of course the doctor said that I must be getting carpal-tunnel syndrome! In within two (2) days? No, that is impossible. I have spinal injury from a horrible surgery gone very bad 10 years ago and with it I experience very intense muscle cramps/spasming which generate from my spinal level of injury, encompass my hips, entire pelvic girdle, buttocks and into my legs - culminating in my feet. They are so severe as to cause me complete incontinence from the intensity of the abdominal pressure on my bladder and sometimes feces incontinence as well. While these are horrible and irreversible outcomes from this surgery-induced injury - I have learned the factors that cause them to happen more frequently i.e. sitting on unfamiliar surfaces and especially without my pressure-relieving seating cushion, flying - from the unfamiliar/cramped seating, difficulty standing immediately when I feel one coming on (when they do I know to come to a standing position immediately and pressing my weight against my feet at a 90 degree angle from my legs and NOT moving an inch from there for up to one hour and until they subside) well, yes, as you can imagine, these horrible cramps/spasms are no longer an intermittent event but occur Daily now and sometimes up to four (4) times a day along with the cramping in my trunk (in various locations around my back that aren't related to my surgical injury, upper extremities and hands - oh wait! I've had them in my jaw and front of my neck as well! What I haven't mentioned is the following: initial weight loss then recent weight GAIN, after about two weeks. Many are unaware that 'controlled' Diabetes Mellitus Type II (2) results in weight-gain due to the circulating blood sugars being metabolized by entrance via the receptor sites on our bodies cells and the storage of excess glucose into stored fat. I attribute this to the fact that I became less active with the depression coming on and the extreme tiredness from interrupted/lost sleep making me much too exhausted to exercise as per my normal activities. Additionally I've had Severe Nightmares, Sudden Shock-like awakening from deep sleep stages, Night Terrors as reported by boyfriend and family, Headaches that are so intense that I can barely stand them and usually upon awakening during my very Interrupted Sleep and at the end of my sleep, when I just give up and can't stand them or the intense cramps/spasms any longer. The depression has been truly disturbing as I have taken meds for it for about three (3) years. I was on SINGULAIR, another horrible med which I discontinued after only a week and a half from beginning it because I developed significant anxiety (I'd never had anxiety before), a period of five (5) days of No Sleep at all despite OTC sleep meds and a pronounced increase in feelings of depression, irritation (I'm usually very easy to get along with and patient), agitation, mental confusion, and very fast talking and racing thoughts/ideas. I'd never experienced these symptoms either than the depressive lows and insomnia being the reason I was initially started on Wellbutrin. I knew that I was otherwise feeling very well, prior to starting the Singulair to better control Asthma, and certainly quite as 'normal and content' as one can be, so it was evident that it was the Singulair. Against my doctor's initial directions I stopped taking Singulair (he'd not been completely apprised of my symptoms by his nurse and had admittedly not studied any of the increasing reports of adverse effects and side-effects of Singulair since a few years back when it hit the news, apparently - he thought that those were the only problems) after reading the many, many, many posts, HERE, from all the poor folks who were suffering as I was and worse! Within one day the symptoms began to disappear and within four days they were gone and I was back to my 'normal'! This without any change, addition or increase in anti-depressives or anti-anxiety meds (which I don't take). I began JANUVIA about a week before the Singulair and was accepting the symptoms and confusing them with those from the Singulair. If you go back and re-read this you will see that the symptoms, side-effects I've had from taking JANUVIA are not at all like the ones from SINGULAIR except for the increase in depression. The depression did resolve quickly when off of SINGULAIR but when a few weeks ago I began on JANUVIA the depression and related neuropsychological symptoms/side-effects returned and increased. I stopped taking the JANUVIA four (4) days ago and am already feeling much better. Additionally, I was at my hairdresser's 10 days ago and after only a month of being on JANUVIA I was thinning and losing hair enough for she and I to comment on it! I do not want to lose my already fine hair! I am going to wait out an entire week then begin on the JANUVIA again for a few days to see what occurs so that when I return to my Endocrinologist/Diabetic Specialist physician I will be armed with a pattern.

In closing, I would like to say that Pharmaceutical REPS make high six-figure incomes by pushing these drugs! Don't do as I did and not 'read and research the side-effects/adverse effects and opinions of existing 'guinea pigs' (all of us) on any meds! Please, review the SINGULAIR section of this board and pass the information on to others and especially to the parents/guardians and physicians/health-care workers enlisted with providing care to children! SINGULAIR is a dangerous, dangerous drug - having read hundreds and hundreds of posts and hearing the heart-wrenching stories of many children taking this drug from the tender-age of two (2) years on up, and their being starting on anti-psychotropics and other meds for all types of 'early-onset' depressions, anxiety, oppositional and impulse control disorders and ADDHD, I am convinced that it is a poison we can live without. Many children have been long-term affected by it with all the concommitent psychological effects of being 'branded' as psychotic, hard-to-handle, out-of-control, ADDHD and more ~~ they've suffered needlessly at the hands of Pharmaceutical companies and the physician's who are so easily 'swayed' into trying a need 'quick fix' drug by some very unscrupulous Reps in the industry. Merck Pharmauceticals is again under forced investigation by the FDA for SINGULAIR - but, please, go read the reports for yourself and see that they've been ordered a nine-month (9) period of time to SELF-investigate! The FDA doesn't have the money to investigate any longer - they spent countless millions on VIOXX and CELEBREX and they can no longer afford to do the costly investigations they used to do. They, instead, rely on 'clinical trials' by whom? The Pharmaceutical companies themselves! Hey sign us all of for that lack of responsibility! Please, spread the word: in the grocery store, doctor's office, gas station, hairdressers, to family, neighbors, friends and strangers and do them all a huge favor, please? Give them the LINK to this wonderful site and it's message boards!

Thank you for reading and may you have much improved and a wonderful health-conscious life!

I just started Januvia as a supplement to Actoplus Met, While my blood sugar, especially in the morning, has shown a significant drop, the day after I took the first pill I noticed a sore throat and woke up the next morning with something like a cold or flu, but without nausea, etc. My wife said it might be due to the Januvia and there is no doubt that they fit the most frequent side effects. However, it's that time of year and there is something going around. I was at my doctor's office on Monday and could very well have been exposed to something there. I noticed the next day that I didn't feel that well and thought it might be low blood sugar, but when I checked it, it was fine (103). I am a pilot and the FAA has certified Januvia with a minimal waiting period. While my blood sugar has been within acceptable range, my doctor says he wants to keep it that way, hence adding Januvia.

Hi, I started taking Januvia approx. 3 months ago. Around the time I started taking this new drug, I started getting very bad hives. The allergist said in no way could it be from a drug. I was watching t.v. this evening when a commercial for Januvia came on and they said hives are a serious side effect and if you are experiencing rthis, call your doctor right away. Has anyone else out there had hives after taking Januvia? It also made me feel like I have a cold that will not go away.

I started taking several medications along with Januvia in January and had mild depression it stopped after a week to two weeks. Because of some miscommunication with my Dr. I went of of januiva for about 1/2 of a month. On March 24 I started taking it again and started felling the mild depression again along with several other side effects that were common. I had one pharmacist tell me it was a side effect another that said no way and yet another that told me that if i had mild depression with it once that i problem was a side effect even though it was not common. Has any one at all had any sort of depression. Please i must know.

Have been on Januvia for 3 weeks, Very bad left shoulder started about one week into treatment. I initially thought that I had slept on my shoulder "wrong". Left leg pain started last week. Lower leg feels tolerable sitting however when I stand & walk, get shin splint type pains. Shoulder is improving & leg pain intensifying. I called doctor's office this morning and relayed symptoms to the nurse. I told him that I was discontinuing Januvia until I heard otherwise. He took my number but physician did not return call today. I find it odd that there is no mention of this type complication in the patient information handouts. I have taken Motrin, Aleve & Extra Strength Tylenol without relief.

Started Januvia 08/07. Constant runny nose. Ear congestion. Experienced sudden hearing loss in left ear from infection. Had to get a tube put in. Ears and hearing still not normal. Headaches once in a while. Lost 30 pounds in 5 months. Sugar levels in the 80's most of the time. Hair has gotten thinner, was already thin to begin with.

After starting Januvia, I started having severe muscle pain along the lines of lactic acid burning pain when doing anything that used my muscles. I also developed creep crawly restlessness in my muscles. I also felt like I had the flu and my sinuses were swollen and had bloody drainage. After I went off Januvia, these symptoms gradually subsided. I went back on it and after two days on it all the symptoms came back and I feel like I have the flu. My muscles scream with burning pain that is really intolerable. If I walk anywhere, I have to keep stopping an giving my muscles time to recover before going on a little further. That's it for Januvia.

Been on Januvia for 3 months these showed up after one month and got worse each week. Since then I have trouble sleeping, wake up 4-5 times in 5 hrs and feel edgy all day. I take reequip for restless leg syndrome and it's been working, but now I feel like it's back and I know it's JANUVIA. I'm going to tell my doctor to switch me back to Januvia.

I have been taking Januvia for about 8 weeks. I have had severe bronchitis, and now can't get rid of chest congestion for two weeks. Seems like fluid build-up in my lungs. Before I started taking Januvia, I was so proud of the fact that I had not been ill in years. Now, can't seem to get well. I stopped taking it this morning and hope to regain my health.
I plan to see my doctor next week.

2 major side effects. I find myself waking up startled and wide awake about an hour and a half after falling to sleep. I usually go back to sleep, but awake again in another couple of hours. This waking is not associated with urination either. before Januvia, I would sleep most of the night around 8-9 hours, with maybe one bathroom break necessary. Now, a full night's sleep is rare. Also, I have been dreaming more vividly and intense. The dreams are much more disturbing, and I have more anxiety in my dreams than I do in regular life. All this started immediately after starting Januvia, and I have been taking 100mg daily for 3 weeks. My endocrinologist does not seem to think there is a connection, but I know there is! I have also had the advertised stuffy nose and slight sore throat. The blood sugars have changed pretty dramatically along with the Avandamet I am taking.

I have severe pain in my throat near my jaw and ear. The attack lasted 20 minutes to 1 hour; it was like a seizure. After I take the pain killer, the seizure stops and I am going to the doctor again this morning.

Numbness in legs and hands, weakness? the spoon in my hand didn't feel right to eat, agitated, high blood pressure, chest pains, sinus infection,
face very numb, started at the lip within 12 hours it was spreading up my face, my eyelids felt so heavy.........I went to the Dr.. he said I had sinus infection, I asked about the numbness, he said Januvia had nothing to do with it!

I left feeling like I was going crazy why all these symptoms and JANUVIA was SAFE, A MIRACLE DRUG WITH NO SIDE EFFECTS BUT A SORE THROAT!

I called 2 other doctors to verify. My dose was due, I skipped it , 4 hrs. later I started noticing a difference

within two days of first taking this medicine my life changed. i had pain in my hip so at times walking was difficult. i couln't sleep without a strong ambien (actually I was awake for more than forty hours before I decided to take an ambien), and strangely enough my blood pressure was reading 124/72, the lowest I can remember. It's that now, a week later. I've continued taking the Januvia.

I thought I was tolerating Januvia pretty well, although it didn't seem to change my sugars much. However about 3 weeks into it I began to notice pain on my legs, especially my left. I can't really describe it as joint or muscle, it is just pain. I kept taking the medicine until it got really bad. I stopped taking the Januvia and the pain was gone in 2 days. I waited a week and started it again. The pain came back on the 2nd day. I have a doctor's appointment shortly and will discuss it with him. However, I'm not going to continue taking it.

I hve been on Januvia for 5 weeks, after not being able to tolerate Metformin. I have noticed a great thinning of my hair. Other than that I haven't felt better. Is hair loss a side effect?

I am wondering if the chronic cough I have is a side effect of Januvia. Initially I thought it was the ace inhibitor I was taking, but since I went off it a few months ago, the coughing has not subsided.

I need to add more side effects I experienced with Januvia, I would wake up at the same time every morning with a "Strange headache at exactly 3:00 A.M. It was so bad it would wake me up. Pain and numbness running down my right leg and left arm. Also I was suffering from Depression because all of this pain. Now it's like I am a new person.. I've been off Januvia almost a week.

I've been taking Januvia for 8 weeks, and have experienced muscle cramps with shock-like pain running down my leg into my heel; upper and lower GI spasms; night sweats with sleep interruption; and I gained 5 pounds in the first 4 weeks which I can't attribute to anything else. I've also taking metformin and glyset for several years, and although I've experienced the night sweats, they've greatly increased in intensity.
