I have been taking Januvia for the last 2 years. Now, I have lesions on both feet and legs. My feet are now going numb. On 11-9-2009 my Dr. took me off Januvia. Said the lesions were a side effect of Januvia. Also, I can't stay in bed past 3:00 A.M. I am still taking Metformin.

This is not a first-hand experience, yet I would like to share the side-effects occured to my Mom. She was having high blood sugar levels for some time,
The Doc' insisted on Jenuvia though expensive and he said that since it is
produced naturally(from human body itself), there are no known side-effects.
Well I searched for Jenuvia side-effects because my Mom was complaining about increased heart rates, head aches and after going through the experiences on this page, well her joint-pains too can be attributed to Jenuvia.
India is not cautious of the usage of medicines, lack of monitoring authorities,Medics going for quick relief and perks on costly medicines from
Pharma Giants.. and to add a huge diabetic population in need of help..
It could adversely affect lives of millions.

feel so so sad and just want to die, can't get out of bed for more than 2 hours at a time, so much pain in hips and legs that I just want to take handfuls of pills to stop the pain, no motivation to do anything, nausea and stomach ache all the time, and of course constant runny nose, can't make it up a flight of stars, swollen hands

Right after starting on Januvia, I began experiencing pain in my wrist at the location of a previous fracture. A few weeks later, I began experiencing pain in my elbow similar to 'tennis elbow'.

Today, I reread the literature accompanying my container of Januvia and noticed a reference to joint pain as a side effect.

I have been a Type 2 diabetic for 5+ years and Januvia has been the best drug yet for lowering blood sugar readings. One must be consistent with dosage and exercise is necessary--in my opinion--to get its maximum effect. Under those conditions, I have been able to reduce my daily Lantus dosage by half, results that allow me to overlook the side effect.

januvia has helped bring my sugar down and my weight, but the problems i have been experiencing are constipation, the podiatrist told me i had slight neuropathy, my joints in my feet would swell and i stay buying alka seltzer and Tylenol pain pm. i do at times get high anxiety which he gave me the generic xanax for and that does help a lot. so my stress is better, but really has helped me is eating special k cereal in the morning and drinking lots of water and eating 3 meals a day. - J., Texas

I am a 50 yr. old female diagnosed with diabetes 10 months ago. Tried Metformin for a couple of weeks and feet started swelling significantly. Have been on Januvia and Starlix since March '09. Just spent 9 days in the hospital with PNEUMONIA in my right lung only. Drs. are considering the fact that I have a very ENLARGED LIVER (19 cm. avg. is 12 cm) to be the cause of my pneumonia and having 3 liters of fluid removed from right lung cavity as the cause for my pneumonia. Liver function tests show liver is working fine. Anyone else have enlarged liver problems or pneumonia while on Januvia? I'm off it now and dreading what will happen to my sugar level. I also take ENBREL for my psoriatic arthritis and stopped it when my pneumonia developed.

I am 56 years old and was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a year and half ago. It was in the borderline stage but I was experiencing severe symptoms such as: intense hunger, blurred vision, and fainting spells. After a lot of begging, my doctor finally put me on Metformin.

Unfortunately, my diabetes went coo-coo on me last April and I got very sick. My glucose was at 465. I could not drink enough water, could not sleep, bad taste in my mouth, I thought that I was going blind, and I was urinating every 2, 3 minutes. I lost 31 pounds just in that short time. But thank God I started to recover end of June.

The most strange thing happened to my vision though. I had been wearing glasses for the last 20 years and now my vision is crispy clear. I do not wear glasses anymore.

I have depression, digestive problems, very bad constipation. For 2 long weeks, the Metformin could not bring my glucose down from 465, and therefore, my doctor gave me some samples of Januvia. Since I started taking the Januvia I noticed my constipation was getting worse so much that I had to take Mylanta to make me go. My stomach is engulfed with air/gas, and gaining the weight back.

I just picked up a complete new prescription of Januvia yesterday. I started this new prescription yesterday in addition to the Metformin and took one pill this morning. As I am typing this message, I am about to throw up, my stomach is so bloated and heavy I can barely move. I only have between 2 to 3 hours of sleep if I'm lucky.

And my question is, why does this medication is still on the market if it is so bad? Simple, there are many of these doctors on the payrol of these drug companies to push these drugs down their patient's throats. Keep in mind that Januvia is a very expensive drug so these doctors do get big cuts from the drug companies.

Only a few doctors who are still really abiding by the code of ethics by looking after the best interest of patients while for many other doctors it's all about the bottom line.

I'm so glad that discovered this site. Thanks to all of you. From this moment forward, no more Januvia for me.

i have been off Januvia for about 2.5 months. the joint problems I used to have seemed to have been gone. I am more alert now that I am not taking the drug. I am still having stomach problems big time. I hope they go away but don't seem to be wanting to go away. My stomach problems are so bad that my blood pressure shoots up very high 2 hours after eating and I feel my food is stuck right below the rib cage. I still get headaches. So beware that if you are stopping this medicine it seems that the side effects linger after a while. I took the drug for about 6 months

I have only been on it for less than 2 weeks, but I am having not really panic attacks as muchas a horrible foreboding feeling, heart racing, a severe pain in my right knee and leg to where I can barely walk. It was fine before and even taking a sleeping pill, I wake up all night long, have to get up to go to the bathroom, severe dizziness and vertigo - all which I did not have before taking it. It has dropped my BS really low, also have sweat attacks.

I took Januvia for 4 very long weeks. At first I experienced rectal itching so I increased my fiber, which helped. After the 3rd week, I had horrible pain in my arms, I was bloated to the point that my pants did not fit and the gas was unbelievable. I stopped taking it about 2 weeks ago, the pain in my arms are gone but the bloating and gas are still present. You can also add nausea, now, every morning. Having read here that it takes a month to work its way out of your system I hope to be back to normal in a couple of weeks.

I have been taking Januvia for a year now and my blood sugars have been great. However I came to this site to see if anyone else has experienced extreme hair loss with Januvia. Since being on the drug I have lost more than half my hair. I had lost over 40 pounds a several months back and been very ill with a bowel infection and the Doc thought the hair loss was due to that. Now I think the bowel infection, the weight loss from that and the hair loss were all due to the Januvia. I was on both Metformin and Januvia until about 3 months ago when the Doc took me off of Metformin due to the fact I had lost so much weight and my sugars were so good. I believe now I will go off the Januvia and try just the Metformin! Calling Doc tomorrow!

My husband had been on Actos for 4 years. A new Diabetic doctor said h needed to get off the Actos to loose weight. So she put him on Januvia.
He takes 1000mg twice daily and 100mg Januvia once a day. Since taking Januvia he wakes up complaining that he had slept wrong on his shoulder, then he complained that his hands and feet felt like he was developing arthritis. This has gone on for 6 months. 2 days ago he woke up with both his feet and his hands were swollen and painful. I started researching Januvia and found this blog. I can't thank all of you enough for the information. None of this side effects are published by Merck!! I took my husband off Januvia and within 12 hours (checking his sugar every 2 hours) his hands and feet were half as swollen. We are headed back to the doctor to reevaluate hi medication.

I started taking Januvia in August 2008. I haven't slept throught the night since. I have the pain in my left shoulder with night sweats. No sex drive, my husband of less then 4 years is really happy about this(yeah right)! I on the other hand have developed constant movements of my abdomen and horrible constipation. The spasms or jerking movements start when I go to bed and usually last for hours. I almost jerk myself out of the bed, it's that severe. I now think this is permanent. My finger joints hurt, shake and fingers tap on their own. These things were never present before the use of Januvia. And I am the one who requested it, not my doctor. So I can't blame him. After reading all of the side effects from others, I am convinced that the Januvia is the culprit. I have depression and now it is the worse that it has ever been.

I just turned 60 and thought all my aches and pains and cramps were due to age, but having read these posts, I believe it is the Januvia that is causing my problems.I am a type II diabetic. After taking Januvia for less than a month, I have been having trouble sleeping more than 4 hours per night. The back of my neck is stiff and hurting. Both my hands and in particular, my fingers are numb and tingling. I'm experiencing cramps in both legs and stiffness all over. I've had to force myself to stand up and walk. I have severe heartburn (something I've never suffered with). I, too, have absolutely no sexual desire.About two weeks ago, a lump about the size of a dime has formed on the cartilage on the front of my neck, just below my chin. My doctor says, "We'll just watch it." I just feel rotten! I am stopping this medicine today. I hope these side effects have not done any permanent damage to me. I'm sick of these doctor's using their patients as test subjects for new drugs! I'm definitely changing my internist because this is one of many instances where the drugs I have been prescribed have caused me extremely miserable side effects. Where in the world is a doctor that believes in improving his patient's health or curing the illness rather than "PRACTICING" Medicine and pushing drugs!

I started reading articles about links between depression and ddp-4, Which Januvia is a ddp-4 inhibitor. after reading this forum and noticing that people experience depression on this drug.

I had depression as one of the side effects on this drug but what I noticed it was not easy to get off the drug. It took me a week of sleepless nights and anxiety and panic attacks which I never had until i took the drug. I am doing better but from what I read it takes a month for Januvia to leave your system.

So my question would be why would a doctor who knows of family background of depression in family history would prescribe this junk. I would think that if you have a predisposition to a disease that it would be taking into account. What this tells me is that our doctors are not doing their homework on the stuff they are giving us and we are having to do tha t for them. What am I paying for then?

What I got from my research was that lower levels of ddp-4 is seen in patients with depression. I found studies by searching on Dipeptidyl peptidase IV and depression.

Abstract
Dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) and adenosine deaminase (ADA), two T cell associated enzymes, are known to have a possible interaction and play essential roles in immune system functioning. On the other hand, depression has been shown to be accompanied with some immune-inflammatory alterations. In this regard, in order to make a contribution to the understanding of the ongoing immune disturbances in depression, serum DPPIV and ADA activities were determined in minor and major depressives and compared with healthy controls. Both enzyme activities were found to be decreased in major depressives compared to controls while only DPPIV activity was significantly lower in major depressives than the minor depressives. There were significant inverse relationships between enzyme activities and the severity of depression. Moreover, a positive intracorrelation was found between decreased DPPIV and ADA levels. The correlated decrease in DPPIV and ADA, might be a further support for their possible association. Results also suggest that decreased enzyme activities might reflect the impaired immune state in depression while major depressed patients might have a greater tendency to immune dysfunction than the minor depressed ones.

I was on Januvia for 15 months, along with Metformin and medications for my heart. I have had a skin rash on my face since I started taking Januvia. I did not make the connection between the Januvia and the rash.I stopped taking the Januvia in Feb. 2009 after I was told that the Januvia may have been the cause (or helped to promote) my prostrate cancer. In March 2009 I had my prostrate removed. It has been approx. 2.5 months since I stopped taking the Januvia. My Internist agreed that I needed to stop taking Januvia immediately. I believe that my rash, which I still have, was also because of the Januvia.

I have been taking Januvia for 1 1/2 months and I have the worst case of acne. I have never had an issue in my life. I have white heads all over my face. I am a 50 yr old woman who has always had a clean clear complexion. I am beside myself and hate looking in the mirror or even going out. I am literally cover in tiny l bumps similar to "baby acne" or millia. People who know me right away remark about what is going on with my face. I am convinced it is related as it started after 3 days on the new med. I had an allergic reaction to "glucafase" (?).
Any one have a similar experience? . ...

I have type 2 diabetes for a few years and am 59 yrs old-and do not have fibromyalgia or kidney, liver problems or depression or a history of any painful muscles ever. I work up to 90 hrs a week as a doctor for the past 12 years and am a DIY renovator of my home in mt free time. I exercise regularly and am fairly fit, I do have a congenital mitochondrial myopathy characterized by non painful arm and leg muscle weakness- but have not been symptomatic significantly for 20 years. I take vitamins and one aspirin a day and have no medication allergies. weeks ago I started Januvia- my only diabetes medication. I worked well to normalize my mild to moserate elevation of BS.Over the past 2 weeks or so, I have had an increased somnolence without feeling rested upon awakening. I felt like I had been beaten with telephone poles and hammers, More distressing is the insidious onset of neuromuscular pains episodic sharp ones, more persistent aching and burning and tingling tingling, with a dense heaviness in legs more than arms worse with exertion and relieved by rest. 3 days ago it was to the point where I had to stop walking after 8 steps and could not climb a ladder beyond one step . I should not curl 2 lb weights even twice, Typing on a keyboard fatigued my arms after 5 minutes. I stopped Januvia three days ago, slept 30 hours,, felt better yesterday, restarted januvia last pm, Today, after 12 hours of sleep I feel exhausted like I did hard manual labor for a few days without ant sleep. The telephone pole beaten feeling returned, My weakness and pain are back with a vengeance and I cannot walk very well and have to stop typing this every 2 or 3 minutes to rest my arms, and have weakness also in my back muscles with curious sparing of abdominal muscles. Heat and massage do not help and are uncomfortable. I feel tired like I do when my myopathy acts up and my Krebs cycle is disrupted and thus my mitochondria do not make ATP to power my muscles- with the additional new symptom of significant pain. Aside from a mild tachycardia of about 100 at rest, my vital signs are normal, my cpk, Mg, thyroid function tests, comprehensive metabolic panel and sed rate are all normal . Heavy metal screen is negative. I will stop Januvia and probably never take it again, If my glucose goes back up I will go back to metformin which I took a few months about a year ago,
I suspect in my case that Januvia disrupted my mitochondrial function as well as being additionally toxic to my muscles and nerves by some additional pathogenesis, I question whether those individuals who have weakness, somnolence and neuromuscular symptoms might have some underlying mitochondrial dysfunction - a very under diagnosed condition - patients being told that their symptoms are of psychiatric origin.

I've not experienced any of the horror stories listed here, but I've had two side-effects that I've isolated. The first is the upper respiratory tract infection. That's a known side-effect. The second I believe was caused by an interaction between Januvia and Splenda. I use a lot of Splenda in my oatmeal. I've been having to urinate in the middle of the night (not like me) and I've experienced urinary tract irritation. Since stopping Splenda I've stopped getting up in the middle of the night and my tract irritation is subsiding. But, all this could be incidental and I would like to hear if other people are experiencing these symptoms while on Januvia and using Splenda. It appears, APPEARS, that, while on Januvia, that I experience the published side effect of losing a little bit of my appetite (good!) but that I have an increased appetite (bad!) using Splenda while on Januvia. I did not experience these symptoms while using Splenda before I was on Januvia. Please write to me if you have similar symptoms and situation at ******

Started Januvia about 7 months ago. Have noticed increasingly blurred vision (not sure if I am just developing long sightedness though - I'm 41), some disrupted sleep patterns, adult acne breakouts and they take forever to heal (which I never had a problem with before), slow healing of small cuts on fingers and with the slow healing, scars are obvious. After reading all the posts here, I am determined to check with the doctor to consider taking off Januvia altogether...not willing to risk more exposure. Exercise and diet will help enough with Glucobay as before.

I'm sorry for everyone's troubles with this med. First of all, my blood sugar has been HIGHER than on regular metformin. I'm taking Janumet which is Januvia combined with metformin- dosage: 50/1000 twice a day. I have noticed a FAST heartbeat, irritability / sadness, higher levels in BS. After reading these posts, I AM GOING OFF JANUMET. Most noticeable side effect is the increased heart rate- it feels like my heart is going to beat out of my chest. Scary.

I am not sure but after taking Januvia for about 2 1/2 months had a brain stem stroke. They could not fing anything that might have caused the stroke. I had six weeks to graduate from nursing school, and when the doctor prescribed the med to me, looking at the side effects concerned me because, at that time there was only four side effects mentioned and looking at drug guide books has a did for school drugs have many possible side effects and with these one only have four known concerned me. I guess I should be lucky to be sitting here reading this. But the first thought to my mind was the med Januvia.

I've been taking Januvia for about 2 months and have experienced sever constipation. I don’t seem to have an urge to have a BM. I have increased my fiber and water intake with no success. I’m also taking Metformin, so I was used to having diarrhea. Since taking the Januvia, I need to take meds to have a BM. I’m also experiencing numbness down the outside of my thighs. I have trouble sleeping throughout the night and I’m very anxious. I don’t know if my problem in the Januvia, but I do know that I did not have these problems until I started taking the Januvia. I’m planning to stop taking the drug for a few days and see how I feel.

I started januvia beginning of October after no luck with other medication but my glucose level remains between 10-12..I haven't lost any weight at all in fact i have increased by about 4 kilos. The worst side effect for me is most nights more frequent urination during the night and also a very foul foamy smell. I had not experienced this with any of the other tablets in the past.I am almost certain it is the Januvia.

hives, redness and severe itching on hands, fingers, and forearms. Pain in shoulder which I can only describe as feeling like I slept on it wrong. Nerve-like pain in lower legs/shins (not muscular) which comes and goes and is not associated with movement or exercise - sort of like if you had a back problem, but intermittent.

My doctor decided to switch my medication from Actos (15mg. daily) to Januvia (50 mg. daily) to try to get better blood sugar levels (120-130 mornings). Took Januvia for about three weeks. After two weeks, started experiencing sleep disturbance (waking every few hours), chest pain, digestive distress (could barely eat toast and eggs), anxiety, and flu-like symptoms (muscle aches, headache) which I thought was my fibromyalgia flaring. Went online yesterday and found this website which described many of my symptoms. Never associated them with Januvia. Did not take medication yesterday and feel 95% better today. I will not take this medication again. Also, Januvia did not lower my blood sugars. In fact, morning readings were higher (140-165).

Started Januvia 100mg once a day in Oct 2008. Gained weight, Sleeping problems, headaches daily, cough, No improvement in my number they went to 300/400 at times, muscle aches to the point I did not want to even get out of bed, My heart felt like it was going to pound out of my chest at times I wondered if I was having a heart attack this lasted about 2 min, or so. Sweating, Numbness in both hands, this was worse at night I would wake with the numbness hurting. Numbness in the tip if my nose. Anxiety, no sex desire whatsoever, dizziness, I'm just a wreck at this time. I Stopped taking Januvia and with in 2 days most of the side effects had stopped or improved. I will NOT take this drug again.

When I first started taking Januvia it was like a god send to me. My bs dropped and I started losing weight. Since sugars were not low enough, I started taking janumet. A1C results were consistently 6.3 even tho' I ate anything I liked. Have taken Janumet for almost a year now and weight is 135lbs (height is 5'3"). Nice, since I just couldn't lose weight earlier (also have an under active thyroid and a sweet tooth). I recently experienced my first hot flash in an air conditioned room no less (am 46 yrs old). Started having migraines around my period. Left shoulder hurt when I raised my arm or reached behind me. Digestive system was a mess. Never experienced high blood pressure but had my first high BP reading at my last check up. Stopped Janumet after reading posts here and started feeling better right away. Digestion is normal. Don't know what to do now.

My husband was diagnosed with Type2 diabetes Sept. 30, 2008. He took the Janumet 50/1000 samples 2 times a day like the doctor told him to. His bs was very good (less than 110). He then switched to 50/500 about the 3rd week of October. His bs still fine. But he started having diarrhea many times a day and through the night.

He quit taking the janumet and about 5-6 days later the diarrhea changed to soft bm's. And he started to feel better, and then his bs would go up again. So he took 2 days of Janumet, diarrhea for 5-6 days(and not taking J.).

The doctor gave him separate prescriptions for januvia and metformin. My husband took 2 half pills a day of the januvia(100mg). and after 2 days, the diarrhea started again.

This is awful, just awful!

November, 2008 I started Januvia about 3 months ago while also taking metformin, glimeride. I previously took Actos but was gaining a lot of weight. Actos replaced the Avandia. The first few weeks on Avandia I seemed fine and the bs was okay. Gradually it increased along with severe painful spasms in my legs, trunk and daily in my neck. Eventually my hands began cramping. I also became severely constipated which is quite unusual for me. I then developed a series of upper respiratory infections. Since I was feeling awful I decided to research Januvia and its side effects. The manufacturer mentions the infections but not the others. As an experiment, I stopped taking the Januvia and within about 5 days, the painful leg/trunk spasms began to disappear. I'm contacting my doctor this week to find me a new drug....hopefully not insulin.

My husband started januvia a few months ago, in addition to his lipitor and benazepril and glumetza, which he was already taking for some time. Since starting I have noticed him being tired, irritable (almost angry), and short on patience in general. He has not complained of muscle pain, but has commented about having less hair. When I mention the mood/behavior changes, he tells me I'm wrong, he feels just fine. He won't discuss it with his doctor.
Has anyone else heard of or seen this effect? I have read only one or two comments along this line. It didn't happen all at once, change came over time. Think about it, ask the people you live with.
Thanks, good luck to all

In addition to night sweats (which were not a problem for me during menopause), I've had a headache for the month I've been on Januvia. Shoulder & knee pain have increased - I went to an orthopedist; didn't know it might be Januvia until reading these posts. My libido has disappeared entirely! I have absolutely no desire for sex; in fact I find it an irritation. This has NEVER been a problem for me. Has anyone else experienced this as a side effect of Januvia? I quit my Januvia this morning; it didn't affect my blood sugars at all. Going back to low-carb eating brought things under control again.

I have felt poorly since October 2006. Sugar levels ranging from the 450-550 range. My G.P. who is a fantastic dr. put me on Januvia in January of 2007. Range of sugar levels did not change much Sent me for blood work found many abnormalities and in March 2007 I was diagnosed with a bone marrow plasma cell cancer call multiple myeloma (not a side effect of Januvia I'm sure). I am I'm the hospital now for a second time because of severe abdominal cramping. Looks like lower bowel problems. Have not been on Januvia for five days now. ***************My right shoulder feels better, I can raise my arm above my head, no night sweats, no bloody nose, my eczema is clearing up, no pain in joints or rest of my body (thought pain was associated with cancer which is considered inactive since April 2008, I have slept through the night, no pain meds for the last three days, no nightmares, no stomach pain, no coughing, chest not feeling congested, I can get out of bed w/out having to stand for a few minutes by the bed-side because of dizziness, not feeling like a truck ran over me in the middle of the night in the last three days, and most of all I have more energy. To many side effects !!! All of these side effects I thought were a possible result of my cancer although my oncologist did not think so and we still believed that there was some other underlying problem(s). THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM(S) IS JANUVIA !!! Thanks for reading. God Bless You All. Great Health to All.

I've had pancreatitis 4 times since starting Januvia, coughing up blood, nausea, vomiting, aches and pains, can't sleep at night, and a host of other symptoms. 4 days without and I'm beginning to feel normal again.
