I can't believe that so many doctors don't know about the side effects of Kenalog and/or don't advise their patients about them. It's unbelievable!!! My father was a very well-known rheumatologist in Puerto Rico (he passed away in 1994) and I worked with him for many years. And one of the first things I learned about Kenalog (and all corticosteroids) were its possible side effects, the most common ones being redness or pain at the injection site, headache, menstrual period changes and/or post-menopausal bleeding, easy bruising and/or bleeding, swelling of the ankles/feet, persistent weight gain, puffy face, unusual hair growth and thinning of the skin, among many others. In case you want to learn more about this, you can visit ******.
I myself am post-menopausal although I'm only 51, and haven't had my period for over two years now. Two weeks ago I got a shot of Kenalog for my back pain and about three days later started spotting, and right now I'm having full vaginal bleeding. I don't worry cause I know it was the Kenalog, but since I have an appointment on the 29th with my gynecologist, she'll tell me if anything has to be done.
Anyway, I hope to have helped the soooo many women who have soooo many doubts about Kenalog. Take care, friends! TutiMM from Florida

I also received a kenalog injection from a dermatologist for rashes that wouldn't go away. He told me ONLY that it would probably mess up my menstrual cycle. I thought "yeah sure that sounds great" I just wanted relief from all the itching. The rash did go away but i started to notice a dent where they gave me the injection. It has since gotten bigger and I am scared and wondering what is going on with me. My doctor never told me of atrophy or even that it was a possibility. I consulted with another doctor who told me he is not sure how this couldn't happened and that they probly injected in the wrong site. i now know after coming to this site that i am not alone and it is the kenalog that has caused me grief. Doctors need to be responsible in letting patients know every detail about the drug they are using on us. I was reassured by him that my only side affect would be irregular periods. Hopefully one day mine will go away but until the people need to be educated on certain steroids.

I am also a victim of having the Kenalog injection administered over 8 months ago to alleviate poison ivy itching symptoms. Prior to having the injection, I was not informed of any side effects. Not only did the injection not alleviate the symptoms, but has resulted in a discolored and uncomfortable indentation in my left buttock area and psychological anguish because of disfigurement of my body. It is 8 months later and the indent appears to continue to deepen and lengthen. The dermatologist who administered the injection stated that there was nothing I could do to reverse such effects. I reported my case to the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) Med Watch. I urge others to report their adverse event to the FDA--just click on this link and complete the form: http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/. The FDA is responsible for assuring safety of medications. Therefore, it is imperative that the FDA recognize the adverse effects to provide any credibility to a class action suit. Please consider forwarding your case to the FDA to force them into action and begin addressing these atrocities. Such documented cases and recognition by the FDA will provide leverage for attorneys in pursuit of a class action suit.

I had the shot in September 07. I agree that it is scary to read all these posts. about two months ago I noticed a small "dent" on my lower back. I though little of it, thought it was just a dimple from exercising. after months it has persisted and when you push it it feels like there is just nothing there. I googled it and was both relieved and newly concerned to find this. I have an appointment with the people who gave me the shot, but realize there is little they can do, at least they will know. I feel helpless and am scared it will continue to grow...just don't know what to do.

I posted last month about the indention in my hip and the terrible periods. The dent in my hip is 2 inches wide and 2 inches long now and the periods are not as irregular but extremly heavy,I don't want to leave my house in fear of bleeding through my pad and tampon onto my clothes.I had a consultation with a plastic surgean today and he told me the atrophy is permanent and will possible get worse. He is going to refere me to another plastic surgean that is familiar with sculptra because he has not had any luck with any other type of fillers not even fat injections.I have an appointment with an attorney next week to discuss a possible lawsuit against the doctor who did this to me.I don't see where it makes a difference if the atrophy is in the arm or the butt it's still a permanent disfiguration. The doctor who gave me the kenalog injection told me that in most cases the atrophy repairs itself in about a year.I have spoken with 2 other doctors and both have said it is permant and it takes a series of Sculptra inections to fill it and that is only a temporary fix.

Hello, My name is Karen and I received a Kenalog injection in my left arm for severe allergies. I was not told what the shot was at the time.
About a month after the injection, I noticed that injection site still appeared to be discolored, like a bruise kind of, and that I was developing a pea-sized indentation in my arm. I got concerned and scheduled an appointment with a different doctor at the same facility. By then, the pea-sized indentation had become a quater-sized indentation and it is very noticeable. The doctor said that the side effect is muscular atrophy and that it will continue to worsen. He virtually explained that there was little I could do about it. I heard him discuss the case with another doctor outside of the room He came back in and stated that the shot must have been outside of the muscular area, into the subcutaneous layer (which is fat tissue mostly). He said that a known side effect of Kenalog was subcutaneous tissue shrinkage like mine, and that it would fill back in within 2 months. It is painful and continues to deepen. :(

I posted a few days ago regarding my never-ending period. Still going, by the way....
I had no idea what was causing my prolonged period, so I called my primary physician. Her nurse called me back and told me that the doctor believes it is due to the kenalog injection. The injection was given to me by my Pulmonary Specialist, who I see for severe asthma. As I was not warned of the possibility of this particular side effect, I phoned the pulmonary specialist and told the nurse that it would be a good idea in the future to inform women of this possible side effect. She spoke with the dr. then called back and told me that the dr. had never heard of such a thing and that I should schedule an appointment with a gynocologist , believing it to be something else. Apparently they researched the problem further and since then both nurses (both doctors are located in the same clinic) spoke with one of the clinic directors. The clinic director called me this morning to THANK me for pointing this out, and told me that the doctors are now in the process of putting together a pamphlet listing ALL known side effects which will be given to every patient prior to a kenalog injection. WHEW! No one should have to be blindsided by the potential horrible side effects of this drug.

This would be my second time getting this injection. I got my shot Aug. 25, 05 and i was less than a week away from getting my period but when the time came for period to come, and it didn't!!! I really didn't have any side effects at the time, however, I was getting injections in my nose for sinus-allergies. It did help. I probably had 4 injections alltogether. One day I called in to see if I could come in for one of the injections. The nurse told me that only one Dr. gives them - which was my Dr. and he was out of town.
I made an appointment to get one when he came back and went to the appointment. I expressed my concern that only he would give them. He said he would leave the room and I could think about it. I decided not. At age 50 probably 4 years later I got Good Pastures disease - an auto immune disease. It took my kiidneys. Now I sometimes wonder if the injections had anything to do with it.

I entered my story in January, but must have done something wrong because it didn't post. My story began with receiving injections into 3 cystic acne, when I only wanted one, and 2 weeks later one of the unwanted injection sights became indented. I was afraid it wouldnt be fixable or if so at my cost. I recently visited the dermatologist and explained what his staff had done. He kindly informed me that he would fix it at his cost. I was given a restylane injection that itself should last 1-2 years and I am to apply Retin-A twice daily to encourage collagen growth. After one year, if it is not corrected, he asked me to set-up another appointment. I had spoken with an attorney and was told that the dermatologist should correct these side affects at cost, and that is exactly what my dermatologist did without prompting! I asked my dermo to use my picture to help educate the staff regarding the serious side effects of this injection.

My husband had had seasonal allergies, in Spring and Fall, that were almost debilitating. He has tried every oral allergy medicine out there. He was considering allergy testing and shots. We spoke to our doctor about it and he said that since we may be relocating in a year, or so, that he would most likely have to get a new series of shots for the new area where we'll live. He suggested the Kenalog shot. My husband got it that day, in late September, and has not had any adverse reactions. His allergy symptoms went away within hours and stayed gone all season. Now it is Spring again, and his allergies are back with full force. He has an appointment to get another Kenalog shot next week, and I'm glad he does!

Pain at front of left shoulder, so Doctor wrote prescription for Voltaren, which I then read up on at this site. Too many side efects so I told Doctor no. He then said a steroid shot would be quicker and easier with 'no side effects' as it would be injected deep into the shoulder, not near the surface. I read your side effects long list, called the Doctor's office back, and canceled my shot appointment tomorrow. The Doctor said I may only have to have 1 or 2 shots. There is no way I would take the "chance" of getting any of these side effects to lessen my shoulder pain, especially now understanding this is not a cure but apparently just a temporary relief which means I may have to keep taking these shots to keep the pain down. I'll put up with the pain until it either heals or I get surgury. My Doctor applied for permission from my insurance company to get an MRI but they declined saying that it wasn't the 'proper procedure', that drugs or steroids must be used first. Seems like the MRI would be least invasive and provide the more exacting diagnosis. I shouldn't have to subject my entire body to drugs and inject steroids wih known bad side effects just to get an MRI from an Insurance company. I intend to write the insurance company a letter contesting their decision. There must be a better way!

Hi a little over a year ago i received a kenalog injection for allergies and have been having a lot of the same side effects you all have been having. I have a very large indentation on my butt. I have an appointment with a plastic surgeon to see about have the indentation fixed just out of worry that it will keep getting bigger because it has over the last 12 months. I have also had problems with my period. I have went from having extreme bleeding to 2 periods a month to now bleeding for 3 weeks at a time. I have also lost a ton of weight and am down to 115 pounds even though I eat all day long. A drug of this kind should not be on the market!!!! ON THE PACKAGE INSERT FOR THIS DRUG NONE OF THESE SIDE EFFECTS ARE LISTED. Somebody should be held liable. If any of you have any information on a class action lawsuit please let me know. Surgery to fix this is very expense not to mention just looking at it in the mirror and knowing that it could have been prevented if someone would have informed me that it could have possible happened.
