Wow....sounds like Kenalog is not a drug to be administered without careful consideration of the pros out- weighing the cons. I had a Kenalog injection in my elbow at an urgent care center while on vacation about 8 mos ago (painful elbow was impacting vacation activities). It took my pain away 100%. Never gave it another thought even until just recently when it began hurting again. Did, however, notice the atrophy at injection site...and a grayish tone to skin. Indentation has not grown, but certainly has remained. My elbow is also super sensitive. Feels like the nerve is right there under a thin layer of skin.....so sensitive. I also have leg shakiness, hip weakness, anxiety, nausea, and increased heart rate....I assume these are related as I did not have these issues prior. These issues bother me way more that the indentation on my elbow. Dont like not feeling well. I guess the learning is that all medications are foreign to your body and thus have potential side effects. One needs to ask questions and or do own research on their own prior to consenting to take a mediation to be sure the benefits are worth it.

I too received a Kenalog shot for poison ivy in my buttocks. The nurse informed me it may cause a little indent for a few weeks since I am thin, but will go away. I never asked anymore questions b/c I was so desperate to get rid of the poison ivy and she made it seem like it was nothing.
Well it's been 9 months and I have a HUGE indent where the kenalog was injected! AND it's gotten bigger and deeper with time. Luckily it is under my bathing suit bottom and most of my panties. But it's sore to the touch and sensitive.
After reading posts on this, I sent a complaint to the FDA. Has anyone who did this heard back from them? If there is a class action suit, I am in. It's amazing all the blogs I've found on the Internet with people in our same situation. It's about time something was done!!!
I would have NEVER got the injection if I knew this was going to happen!

I was injected with Kenalog in Mid July 2008 to reduce the swelling in my tonsils (I had a bad case of tonsillitis). I was asked if I have allergic reactions to steroid injections, and to my knowledge, I don't. So I was given a shot in my upper right buttock on Thursday (mid July). On the following Friday I was no better (still mid July). I was still not able to swallow my own spit, let alone eat or drink, so I went back Friday morning. I got another shot in the same location of Kelanog. I was not told of side effects; I was told the swelling would go down in my tonsils/throat. Again, no results.
That Friday afternoon I was admitted into the hospital for care. A weekend of fluids and other drugs got the infection out. I stayed infection free for two weeks. It hurt for a week afterwards on my right buttock, but no bruising. I healed up, had my tonsillectomy (sp), and healed fine after that.
I noticed nothing wrong with my upper right buttock until about two weeks ago. I am in the process of getting a large rib/hip tattoo piece finished, and about two weeks ago I noticed a spot that looked like a small bruise a few inches from my tattoo in the spot where I was administered the Kenalog shots. I didn't put it together then. Two weeks later (This past Thursday, September 25, 2008), my tattoo artist was about to work on me and said, "You have a dent in your butt, what happened?" I had no idea it was even a dent. The "bruise" like mark now looked like a burn scar, red, and smooth and deep--dented.
The red mark is still dented and the same color. It's about the size of an inch from one side to the other. However, each day since it has been dented, the dented area has expanded fairly rapidly. The dent is now not only in that red area (the injection site), but also along my hip/upper thigh. It's getting deeper and traveling outside the red area, and the red area is the same color. This discoloration just started. I heard this is called Tissue Atrophy due to a misadministered Kenalog injection.
Does this dent go away or stop "spreading" by itself? How will I know if it will stop spreading; is it different for everyone? How can it be properly diagnosed as well? Can a biopsy be done to prove that this it what it is? Does anyone have any insight?
Also, it's been 2 1/2 months before I saw any of these effects...why does it seem like my effects came later than others? Is that possible?
Thanks.

I received a shot of what I thought was my regular prednisone steriod in November 07. Obviously, that wasn't the case. I must have received this Kenalog shot because now I have a golf ball size dent in my upper buttocks. It is not going away and I think it could be getting worse more than 9 months later. I would be interested in a class action lawsuit against the manufacturer of this product and/or my allergist. Please contact me with possible ways to make this look less obvious. ******
Thanks

I regularly got steriod injections for my allergies. This last time I went to my allergist to get my "regular" injection, I noticed that it stung pretty bad going in. I didn't think anything of it and left. About 3 months later I noticed a small indention under my skin at the injection site. Now, 9 months after my last injection I have a huge golf ball size dent in my upper buttocks. It is not going away or getting any better. I would be interested in a class action lawsuit against the company and any advice to possibly take action against my allergist. You can reach me at ******

I do understand that this medication can be helpful for some people and for them, the benefits out-weigh the side effects. For this reason, I don't think that this med should be taken off the market, but I DO think that we, as patients, deserve to be explained these side effects before we are just injected with such a powerful drug!!
I went in to a walk-in clinic with allergy symptoms that were not relieved by OTC drugs. Nothing super- severe that I couldn't stand, but I was looking for something to make me feel better and the Dr. prescribed Kenalog. No side effects were mentioned/discussed. A nurse came in and gave me the shot. A few months later, I noticed the dent on my left buttocks area. I was very worried because it looked SO bad! The dent has increased in size and depth over the months. My PCP told me that it was most likely from the Kenalog injection but I have an ultrasound scheduled to find out how extensive the atrophy is! She says that it only destroys the tissue and fat but I know for a fact by feeling the area that the muscle underneath is completely gone!! How can this shot be given to patients without a verbal description of possible side effects and a written consent!!
I've read that some people have been lucky enough to have the "dent" go away! How long did that take?? I am only hoping that I am as lucky!!! It is such an UGLY site!! Luckily it is covered by a swimsuit and my fiance doesn't find it as ugly as I do!!

I agree with everyones comments on here. I have had all of the side effects associated with Kenelog except for the tissue deterioration in the buttocks. However I have found I new side effect that I can only contribute to Kenelog. I am a father or a wonderful little girl who is now 7. I have stayed active my entire life and at 31 I have never been on any other medications other then kenolog for the last 7 years. My wife and I have been trying to have a baby for over two years and have been unable to. After going to the fertility specialist I have found out that I know suffer from azoospermia, which is basically that I do not have any sperm what so ever being created. I will keep you updated as I get more testing done, but I may never be able to conceive a child again because of Kenalog.

My 12 year old son gets poison ivy every summer and about a year ago we took him in for a shot. The shot left a dimple in the upper part of his buttocks. Not a big deal at the time. Now almost a year later this has grown to the size of a half dollar and skin looks pinkish in the center. Does anyone know how they treat this, if at all? Poor kid, you know he won't be wanting to undress in the locker room. We need to do something about this. I also was not warned of any side effects let alone a disfiguring problem.

I also did not mention in my previous post that my injection was in the upper left arm. I didn't watch it, but it felt like it was in the tricep. The doctor said the injection could be given in the buttocks or the arm; he chose the arm without revealing why he thought that would be any better.

Hello everyone,
Just like all of you, I too googled this strange indentation in my left buttocks and found this site. I suspected when it first showed up that it may have something to do with a shot from my Dr. because the indentation was strangely in the same spot as my last shot. I have received several Kenalog shots over the past couple years for chest congestion and sinus related symptoms that typically drive me to calling my family practice doctor. Although he regularly administers Kenalog, I have had know reason to doubt his treatment as my history with him has been relatively good. However, he is not the one administering the shots, his young nurse it the one (less than a year out of school). Anyway, I too, like many of you am going to look into a class action lawsuit and/or my own legal counsel. If there is anyone out there who has gotten any positive feedback from a lawyer willing to take this on, please contact me for testimonial. This is not flattering and moreover, after reading the many previous entries, I am downright scared. Also, please advise is there is any known treatment to help reduce further reduction of tissue in this area. Thank you very much for reading and for the continued entries after this one.

Curious what to do about this Depressing problem......
I too am going through what everyone else is explaining. On September 25, 2007 I was given an 80MG Kenalog shot in the right buttocks, for what the doctor thought was an allergy. I now have a huge crater in my rear where the kenalog shot was injected. It doesn't seem to be getting any better either. I was wondering if there was a class action lawsuit on this or NOT??? Or if anyone has contacted a lawyer, and what the lawyer might have told them to do? If someone would please contact me the help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had a "dent" for about four years now, and had no idea what it was until now. I'm relieved to find out that it isn't anything like cancer.....but will it ever go away? Are there any known treatments or cures?
I'm very upset that my doctor gave me no warning of side effects of the Kenalog shot. I was only told that it would aid in my relief from allergies. I have now received the shot for five years in a row, and have two "dents" on either side of my lower back. Any advice on legal action?????

Prior to having surgery for my sinuses the ENT wanted to give me Kenalog to calm things down. I was injected in my buttocks. A few days later I noticed that the injection site was black and blue and I had a 6 inch area that was running down my leg, swollen and black and blue. I called the doctor and they said they must have hit something when they gave the shot. It went away, but about 2 months later I too noticed a crater sized indention was forming in my buttocks. I can't believe that a shot would do this. If I would have known, I would NEVER have had this shot.

Hello`!
What you are all describing is exactly what is happening to me.
It started out as a small dent in my buttocks, and now it is growing.
I would certainly love to join a class action lawsuit, this must be stopped, and information should be given as to the side effects before administering this injection.
Please let me know if anyone has contacted a lawyer.

I have recently discovered that I too have had a major side effect from this drug. I only received one injection 5 months ago in the buttocks for an allergic reaction I was having and now I have a huge indention like crater in the area that looks like the tissue has been eaten away. I did not even know it was from that since it has been a while and only one shot. After finding this website and talking to my doctor's office. They did confirm that the shot given was Kenalog and in that spot which I was certain of after reading so many others who have this side effect as well.
I am very interested in joining a class action lawsuit. People need to be warned of these major effects. I would have NEVER allowed the injection to be given had I been warned.

I had a Kenalog shot march 07, and it seemed to work wonders. In September, my allergies came back with a vengeance, so I returned to the same doctor. I was given another shot, in the same spot on my buttocks. I started having my period every two weeks. Normally very skinny, I have gained about 10-15 pounds. I started to notice facial hair. I went to an OBGYN and was tested for PCOS. A weeks ago, my boyfriend noticed a large indentation in my buttocks, with some bruising at the site of the injections. One of our friends mentioned a similar side effect from allergy shots. After researching and reading all this... I believe both of these to be side effects from the shot. I was never warned of any side effects, only told it would be better than taking a pill every day. I am so terrified and so depressed about this, I wish I would have been warned. I am not sure what to do!

Injections of Kenalog done via x ray machine, 3 times in a period of 2 months and trigger point injections with Kenalog done once after the second one did not work. Felt great after the first one, lasted for 4 weeks. Had another one done (second one) for the same problem, L5-SI (spinal fusion with rods and cages 7 years ago, developed sciata 4 months ago and pain doctor said the Kenalog shots were needed so I took her advice.
Needless to say, I was not informed of the warnings. I have been in bed now for 4 weeks, have no energy, feel dizzy and disorientated. Cannot even walk down the street without feeling like collapsing, hip pain and leg movement is deterioting and I am scared. Feel sick all of the time, cannot do laundry or dishes, feel so depressed as a result of these shots. Arm numbness and loss of motion, tingling in my fingers, burning pain in buttocks, down leg, and calf and down to foot. Also having muscle spasms in my left arm.
Never again will I do this. I will be speaking with my pain doctor next week and will inform her that these shots made me worse.
Thanks for listening to me, I need to go to bed again. I was such an active person before all of these shots were given to me. I feel so sad all the time and crying too often when I should be happy. I am a 47 year old female.
Any advice one can give would be appreciated.

I also had a reaction to a kenalog injection in my upper right buttocks area. I have a HUGE discolored indention that has not gone away. It has been a YEAR!! I also had irregular periods for three months with ultrasounds, etc. to make sure I was alright. My doctor did not think to ask me if I had had a steroid shot lately. I sure didn't tell her because I had no clue it was a side effect. I had the shot for severe allergies and was not warned of the side effects either! I am very against having another shot, even though it cured my severe allergies last spring. I look deformed!!

In July of '06 I received a Kenalog shot in my buttocks because of asthma problems. I never knew why my skin was sinking in, at the same place where I received the shot. Now, nine months later, I can almost sink my fist in my butt because the dent keeps getting larger. I just learned a few days ago that it was because of the Kenalog shot. Is the dent going to keep getting larger or is there some way that I can stop it. Somebody please help me.!!!!

I have used topical triamcinolone (kenalog) for many years for treating mild psoriasis and about 2 years ago I started to notice an indentation on my left buttocks. About 6 months later it filled out again but then appeared on my right buttocks and has not gone away. I went to my primary physician to inquire about it and she could not tell me what was wrong. While surfing the internet to research this, which really bothers me, I found this site and I am in utter shock to say the least! Those of you with this side effect, I feel your pain! And who knows what other side effects are lurking around the corner for us? Is there a LAWYER IN THE HOUSE?

I had a kenalog shot in Jan 06. After that I had two pweriods a month for 5 months. It has now been 6 months and I have had no period at all. Also and most importantly I have yhe largest Hole in my buttocks. It looks as if someone took a large bite out of my rear. I have had experience with restalin, and at 550$ It would easily take four doses to fill it in, might I add temporarily. I was not told of this posible side effect. And the doctor did admit that the kenalog is the cause. What worrys me is that it seems to be growing larger. I have appt. with my dermatoligist in two weeks.

My daughter who is 13 had to have the shot last year around Nov or Dec 2005 and she has a huge indentation in her buttocks area. We were not warned about this side effect, if I had been I would not have agreed to it. One doctor did not even know what it was, she just prescribed itch medicine. The hole is so large you can stick a thumb in it. The next doctor told us it was a permanent side effect, that the fat beneath the skin has been melted away. So now I am planning to take her to a dermatologist hoping that they can fill it with resitilan, but the thought of having a cosmetic procedure on a 13 year old makes me sick. However I cannot expect her to be ok with such a disfigurement on her body.
I would like to know what an attorney had to say about your disfigurement. The manufacturer of this drug is responsible for doing this to people, this issue is not being talked enough about in the media. The public needs to know.

I had a kenalog shot into my right buttocks on 12/09/2005 and now have an indentation in my buttocks at the injection site. I take great care of my body as I work out intensely five to six days a week. My boyfriend first noticed he indentation over a month ago however I didnt think anything of it until it began growing. I am going to my GP today to inquire about it as this will leave me severly depressed if this is permanent due to the fact that I am knwon to have a nice, round, muscular butt. I will wait to see what the GP says then most liely get a 2nd opinion and then if needed seek legal services. I am 31 y/o female in NJ. if anyone has any recomendations on another doctor to see and/or lawyer who specializes in medical malpractice please let me know. This is real sad as I only received one injection with no instructions on side effects for allergies, etc. I did not find any relief from the injection and am now left with a dimple in my butt. I also have pain and tendeness to that area.

I have been revceiving injections in my right buttocks for eczema the past 1.5 years (every 6 weeks). Since I started this, my menstrual cycle has been irregular. It would come for 1 week, stop for 1 week, then come back for 2 weeks. For the past week and a half, I've had this pain in my leg. It definitely isn't muscle, but more bone pain. I told my primary doctor that I haven't changed anything in my lifestyle. But I did tell her about the injections and she was shocked that I've been getting them for such a long time. Supposedly it can cause osteoporosis over a long period of time, along with the hormonal changes. My doctor advised me to stop with the injections and prescribed another topical medication. Hopefully my flare ups can live without the injections. How is everyone else coping?

I have had severe chronic sinusitis earlier this year and after failing three rounds of antibiotics, I was given a shot of antibiotics and a Kenalog shot in my right upper buttocks. This was in the early spring. Now, I am mortified to see a huge indentation where my shot was given! The skin looks dead, purplish. Is this going to continue to get bigger? Is there anyway to fix it? I was never warned about such a side effect and if I would have been told, I would have never gotten it! I know it is cosmetic but looks awful and there is no reason why anyone should be scarred this way. The makers of this drug should be held responsible for scarring so many people and now, I have to figure out how to fix it! I don't know whether to be mad at the doctor's office who gave me the shot or the makers but either way, something must be done about this drug! Does anyone know of any way to fix this, be it plastic surgery or what have you? Thanks for any info.

I received an injection of Kenalog (40 mg in my right buttocks ) in November 2004. I had some sort of of rash under my eyes. The shot worked. The rash came back in February 2005 and again I was given an injection of Kenalog (1cc in my right buttocks). It was after this second shot that everything changed for me. The first obvious side effect to be directly identified with Kenalog was the Huge hole in my butt. I had Many other side effect for weeks and months to come that I didn't realize was the Kenalog till just this past week. I have had terrible night sweats for months, I have had a chronic yeast infection that no matter how much diflucan I take it doesn't go away. But the worst side effect is that my resting heart beat has been about 15 beats per minute more that it ever was and shoud be. I feel like there has been as excess of adrenaline running through my body 24/ 7. Hard to be inside my own sking these days. I also recently started to lose my hair. I just last week finally couldn't take the way I feel so, I went to see an endocronologist who said it is the reaction of the Kenalog. And told me this could last a year.
Has any one else out there experienced a rapid heartbeat and unbearable anxiety?????

A little indentation on my buttocks is well worth the relief of this insatiable urge to dig my eyes out of their sockets. I've been taking Kenelog at 80mg once a year for 35 years. There is an indentation, which is more like a small cute dimple. My eyes don't itch, my nose doesn't run and I can actually be outside every day with no side effects. This is a priceless medication for which there is no known substitute.

i had seasonal allergies all my life (47yrs.) and took over the counter allergy meds. Suddenly, 8 months ago, my allergies became severe - eyes constantly tearing and itchy, nose itchy and runny, roof of my mouth and even my scalp was itchy. The dr. put me on Zyrtec and Optivar eye drops. They seem to have helped but he sent me to an allergist who told me he was going to give me a "shot" to shock the allergic reaction out of my system. He said a minor dimple at the site for a month would be the only side effect. It's been a week and a half and the shot did nothing, suddenly I realized it was Kenalog as I remember hearing him tell the nurse which shot to prepare. Now I'm panic stricken after reading all these horrible remarks from the poor people who've had this shot and are suffering terrible side effects. I do not know the amount of med. i received in the shot but i have to go back in one week to tell him the results and if they're not favorable he will order bloodwork to help pinpoint my allergies. I am so upset that they did not inform me of the serious side effects that I have read on your site. Thank the Lord for help from all of the day-to-day people that respond to this website. I will never let a dr. administer anything to me without being better informed. Does one shot cause all these muscle killing side effects of the buttocks? The dr. called it a small dimple??? Greying of the hair - loss of hair - are these things because people have been taking shots over long periods of time? please help....

I got the shot and within two hours my left hip and buttocks were very discolored and burning really bad. I returned to the doctor the next day and he gave me some cream to put on it. The cream did not help at all. I kept going back to the doctor for about a week and he said that it would clear up on it"s own. Well, it did not clear up. It just got worse. I finally had to go to the hospital because the pain got so bad. The doctor at the hospital was very surprised because my skin was dead from the shot . He called in a surgeon and they did emergency surgery on me that night. They removed the left side of my hip. I have been in and out of the hospital for the last 5 weeks and had 2 surgery's. I have also had to have a skin graph from my leg to cover up th sight on my hip. Now I have to wait for this to heal and have plastic surgery to make my hip look back to normal. This was all because of the shot.

Had a kenalog shot for poison ivy in December of '02. Within 2 weeks, site (upper arm) became dented & pitted due to "fat necrosis". Upon examination, Doc said I should have had it in the buttocks since I'm skinny and to "put on some weight" to fill out the dent. Shaking, insomnia, feeling like I'm jumping out of my skin, depression/anxiety, total loss of appetite, muscle weakness irregular period. Took a year to feel back to normal. Dent is no longer visible, but can be felt.

I received kenalog for planters faciaitis...one shot in each foot. I also received an injection in the buttocks over a year ago...for edema of the legs. Each injection served its purpose, but both times I have experienced vivid dreaming, strong emotional swings (anxiety to what I would call depression), and headaches due to tension in my neck (related to anxiety??). I will not take another shot unless it is absolutely necessary...I hate feeling like it makes me feel. I cannot wait for the medicine to pass through its active existence in my body. I asked a nurse and doctor about such reactions to Kenalog and they confirmed that it is very possible for people to experience such side effects.

I am as relieved to find this site, after reading this it's like a puzzle where all the pieces have come together. Unfortunatly now I am worried about what this Kenalog has done to my body.
In Aug 2008 I recieved a 40mg Kenalog shot to help stop the swelling in my lips, tongue and throat...which is ironic and funny to me since those happen to be the same symptoms I would have experienced had I had an allergic reaction to the shot. Nice job thinking that one through doc.
The shot did nothing to relieve the swelling (thanks docs!), but apparently has done a number on my body.
Two months later (Oct 2008) I have been left with a visible dent on my right buttocks, where the shot was given. It started as a grey dent about the size of a small thumb, but has now grown to the size of an Ozarka bottle top.
Additionally the non-visible ailments I have been suffering are numbness in the right leg, sometimes it gets so severe that my leg feels tight and paralyzed. I have noticed heart flutters, and about two weeks after the shot I noticed a sudden weight loss of 12lbs in 2 weeks. This might not seem like much, but for a 25 year old who is 5'5'', muscular, and very active my healthy weight is about 125lbs, I am now 111 lbs (I weighed that much in JR. HIGH!! ugh!) it's bothersome. I can't seem to gain weight and instead continue to loose weight. Additionally I get blurred vision randomly and for extended periods of up to 3-4 min.
The dent is bothersome, but it is just a visible ailment. What worries me more than anything else is the fact that the above ailments seem to be related to the Kenalog shot...so what unseen damage has it done to my body??
I called the nurse who gave me the shot and she offered no help what so ever.
I have sent this site to other family and friends so that they can be aware of the side effects of this too commonly used drug. I hope the side effects that we are suffering go away, and that this product is taken off the market.
