I can't believe what I am reading! I have been a competitive runner for over 25 years, and in the past two years I started running mainly trail ultras - races up to 70 miles. This March my husband noticed a huge dent in my left glute muscle that over the course of four races got worse and led to a secondary dent in my hip area. I just assumed I had injured my muscle somehow, but no amount of rest, PT, or stretching has helped.(it's been 6 months now) I developed hip bursitis, medium to severe pain in all my joints, including both knees, my left ankle, and extreme spinal stiffness.
None of the experienced PTs I've been to have seen anything like my dent, and they are baffled by my worsening condition. I'm so scared I'll have to give up running altogether, as my joints are failing me. My PT has advised me to go to my regular doctor to get bloodwork, X-rays, an MRI & all tests done to see if something is wrong with me that is beyond muscle-skeletal. Before all of this, I had low back issues but no joint issues at all.
I found this web site by chance, and suddenly I remembered that several months before noticing the dent, I received 2 steroid injections in my butt, as well as pills & cream for a super severe case of poison oak that covered my whole body and face. Do you think my doctor will tell me if it was Kenalog if I ask?
I, too, am very very interested in any other stories of severe joint pain and inability to run especially after receiving these shots. I hope we can help each other figure this out & get answers.

i have rheumatoid arthritis but came off meds to try for a baby. i was given a shot (80mg) of Kenalog to keep me going. i feel the nurse was negligent because she never told me any side effects apart from flushing and palpitations. unfortunately i have had really irregular cycles, excessive bleeding and have stopped ovulating. not great when we want to try for a baby! i have also lost 10 pounds in weight in a month. i just had an appointment with my acupuncturist who has also made me realize something else: i had some shots directly in to several joints over a period of a few years. my left wrist has now collapsed and i need a replacement. coincidence? i am def taking this further, please anybody in the U.K make your concerns known to the yellow card system which is the gov regulating board for medicines.

I had 2 kenalog injection in my sacroiliac joints. I had these injections within 2 weeks of each other. I had them done because I suffer from a chronic back pain, had had a spinal fusion and within 4 months began suffering unbearable pain in my hip and leg,it felt as though my hip was dislocated.
The side effects I have suffered are as follow: extreme hunger, weight gain, puffiness in my face and stomach, excessive hair growth on my face. The wierd part of the excessive facial hair is that before I had these injections done I always left handfuls of hair in the shower and when I put hair products in my hair, since the injections I hardly lose a single strand of hair.I also had severe night sweats, mood swings, and I have yet to get my period since I had the injections.
Above all of this I also suffered steroid withdrawal. Like I said I has these 2 injections within 2 weeks of the other. Abpput 3 weeks after the last injection I began to have a creepy crawly feeling in my arms, cold sweats, and vomiting. I called my Dr who said it was withdrawal from the steroids. I couldnt believe this. I did some research online . I discovered that this does happen if you have more than one injection within 3 weeks. I guess it does make sense because when you take oral steroids you are almost always given a taper pack. You are weened off of them so that you don't go into withdrawal. With an injection obviously you can not be weened but if you have the injections too close together, withdrawal can happen.
The only advise I have is that if you can wait to have your injections more than 3 weeks apart...do it because the withdrawal is miserable.

I received a Kenalog shot a couple of weeks ago. I have been suffering chronic joint pain in all of my joints for almost a year. I've been taking pretty intense doses of painkillers and they stopped working. I'm allergic to NSAIDS so my medication options are limited in terms of anti-inflamation drugs. My Rheumatologist suggested it and at this point I was willing to try anything.
Anyway, it's been working pretty good. I still have pain but it's not nearly as intense as it has been. My feet & ankles were swollen really bad before too. Now they are back to normal again. The pain meds work much better now too.
I haven't noticed any side effects. I had insomina before because of the pain. I still have it but at least now I have more energy. All in all it's helped my condition. After reading some of the responses though, I will keep watch after the next shot. It seems that problems come up after a few shots.

Hi
I posted on this site in Jan 05, after my husband was rushed into hospital 3 days after multiple kenalog shots for his joints ( gout) He was told he was diabetic type 1 and would be using inuslin for the rest of his life. His body had started closing down his organs. He was on drip for 6 days, lost a stone in weight in 3 days prior to getting into hospital. I kept saying it was the injections, Cut a long story short he stopped using insulin injections within a month and his bloods have came to nearly normal. He is still treat as diabetic ( type 2) no medication, diet controlled. You cannot go from Type 1 to Type 2. We are in the process of going to court with the doctor who gave him the shots, we were not warned of any of this side effect. We have been told it will take a long time to sort out, but what really worrys me, if Kenalog came make the pancreas stop making insulin, and thank -god his started working again. What in the future if it is badly damaged and stops altogether? Can I thank the person who put the information on the site about dosage and side effects. Would you believe the hospital has lost my husbands records. I hope if this happens to any-one else this piece of informtation may help. Not only did Kenalog change my husbands life but 4 months later I had a heart attack and they have put it down to stress ( I am 44 and my husband is 45)We both had no serious illnesses ever but now!!!!! WHO KNOWS

I had a kenalog shot about a year ago for allergies. A nurse gave it to me, not my doctor. A few days later I felt as if I had no muscle tone. Major loss of "meat" especially around my joints. Went for months looking for an answer. Always suspected the shot, but really do after finding this site. Yesterday, neuro found inflammation on my brain. Could this be associated? Having many cognitive problems, including typing this message even though I've been typing for 32 years! Does anyone know if the fat ever readjusts and comes back as it should? I'm worried this gave me scleroderma and this might be what's on my brain? Thank you for any help.

In reference to #14133 I want to add more symptoms that I have experienced. On my right hip area where the injection was given turned purple with a noticable indention then it turned white. I have also experienced pain in my joints mainly in my hip and knee area. I have had other symptoms like hair loss & irregular periods. I was not told of any symptoms when the injection was given. When I went back to the facility that gave me the injection they said nothing could be done about the indention. I feel that something should be done about this. I am telling my freinds, family, co-workers what Kenalog can do to you. THANKS FOR THIS SITE.

I live in the UK and receive an annual kennalog injection for hayfever.
Described as using a giant hammer to crack a nut! my first injection was about 10 years ago and the effect was absolutely amazing, my hayfever cleared up instantly.
During the first few years the only side effects i noticed were increased agression ( i am normally calm !! ), really bad headaches and the increased number of bugs/colds due to my immunity system being broken down. What i did notice is after a few years the injection has a lesser effect, it still works wonders but not as good as the first few times.
Last year i had a massive bust up with my doc as he refused to give it to me. I cannot do my job with hayfever so eventually he gave it to me on the condition i signed a disclaimer as it is no longer recommended for hayfever.
I usually dismiss all normal hayfever tablets but this year I have decided take docs advice and am using tablets first before i go back begging for my injection.
The tablets i am using are called Neoclarityn and are only available over the counter.
Into June and all is ok so far apart from a bit of asthma.
Anyone else using anything else other than kenalog for hayfever??

I'm a physician. Usually Kenalog injections can be avoided and oral steroids used like prednisone. The local dimpling effect may occur if the injection is too shallow, actually there is a temporary "disolving" of the subcutaneous tissue, the muscle and joints are not damaged. It is usually viewed as a "cosmetic" adverse effect. The Kenalog injections was primarily designed for joint injection and the kenalog or similar depo form stays active in the joint for a few weeks. All steroid medications can cause irritability and this is usually temporary for a few days. Steroids can cause muscle weakness- this is usually associated with high doses for prolonged use like being on prednisone for 3 or 4 months. Steroids can have an adverse effect on menstruation, but this is usually associated with chronic use. The most serious problems with the steroids result in bone weakness(osteoporosis) and serious damage to joints like the back and hip. Steroids can also result in weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure and cataract formation. I don't think Kenalog is any different than other steroids such as Medrol or Prednisone in terms of the side effect profile. These are dangerous medications that can also be very helpful in saving lives and diminishing pain.
