I am on 400 mg of Lamictal for a seizure disorder. I am completely amazed after reading these experiences of others how similar they are to mine. Except I've hardly attributed them to Lamictal, I have been constantly just blaming myself thinking that this weight gain and struggle and lack of motivation is an inherent weakness within myself more than likely caused by genetics etc. I've experienced, jawline acne, weight gain (the heaviest weight I've been in my life), lack of motivation, extreme insomnia (I have to take a sleeping pill EVERY night or I will not sleep), lack of thought/word recall, spaciness, lack of coordination/balance, severe shortness of breath (always attributed this to being overweight), along with heart palpitations, constant mucus in back of throat, spaciness, excessive dependency on lists/need to write everything down, mental blankness, difficulty culminating ideas, major blurred vision and nasty headaches that last for days. I normally consider myself somewhat intelligent, I was able to get a masters degree and breezed through college in my earlier years. But now after being on Lamictal for 4 years I'm having difficulty comprehending my daughter's second grade homework! Wow. This is an eye opener. One good thing I like though about Lamictal is I feel a sense of calmness after taking it initially. I feel releived at this point that I am not alone in my experience!

I have been on lamictal since may of 2009, so 7 months now. It has completely saved my life and given me such an amazing quality of life with zest, energy and hope. I had been suffering from a deep depression that nothing was helping at all, and I was probably on every kind of medication. This is why I am so sad right now...because last month, I started breaking out with tiny bumps on my jawline, hairline and especially neck and chest. I was able to deal with it for a few weeks, but last week it started really flairing up and now it just plain burns and hurts. I am currently seeing a dermatologist who has me on tetracycline and benzyl peroxide, but it seems to be getting worse. My physician said that he thinks it is folliculites, but that it should go away on its own. its only gotten worse.

I'm wearing an acne mask, going to the sauna and drinking lots of water...and just this morning I woke up with a bunch more. sigh....

I am really trying to weigh the options of a painful face and neck vs mood stabilization, it is so unfair :(

does it go away? is there hope that it will sort of just resolve itself like some of the other side effects?? For the first time in almost 10 years, my sex life is back, my libido high and my mood great....I just need some sort of relief for my face.

any input would be so good - thank you!!

Harry Potter I think when you have severe depression sex drive is one of the last things on your mind, and anyway lamictal severely reduced mine....and as far as feeling youthful I don't know where you got that.

I'm convinced lamictal has given me acne and I seem to be a hell of a lot hairier too which is rather upsetting considering I'm a 24 year old girl. I genuinely do not believe I can cope without it and barely am (with it) however it does make a huge difference.
I have read that lamictal can have bad effects on the kidneys and liver and have considered taking accutane for the acne but know this is also bad for your kidneys and liver too. I am also concerned about other possible side effects of accutane (depression being the main on). Does anyone know if it is safe to take the two together? It seems to be a tricky one. Thanks, C.

hi i have posted before you i have been through all you said what to do then there are some positive points r there this tab lamictal generally suits the people who does not react to other med as vaporate ,carbamazine, lithium it works differently from other tabes i think people say that while you take a medication there are side effects and there r problem so with every every thing you put into your stomach why you eat food it is because it is necessary to keep you alive wee r leaving in science age people in the past the people who use to have symptoms like bipolar disorder and schrizophenia use to either suicide or where burned to death thinking they r wiked thingk even positive side of this and friend look at each problem separately don't mix them and try to find answer increase your reading learn more about this disease read self help books and eat the tabes you need to eatwe r not wrong people just taking this tablets to feel well but normal people to live normally live life and enjoy it fully ............i have acne problem thinking of using accutane i hope it will work

I have been taking 200 mg. of Lamictal (now Lamotrigine) for 5 years. I have had cognitive issues for probably about three years at least. Memory loss, sudden loss of flow in conversation, completely forgetting words and the spelling issue which was previously impeccable. It's embarrassing and frightening. I can't get through ANY given day without losing my belongings over and over again. I feel disabled (seriously) and I jokingly tell people I need an "aide". The scariest thing was last week I was going to return an item to the store and COMPLETELY forgot my PIN # for my debit card. I have been using the card nearly daily for a year and a half!!! It panicked me but I thought of course I would remember it later. NOT!!! Never again, it's gone!!! That's when I decided to search the internet for "severe memory loss" and came upon this blog. I didn't even think of the Lamictal. And I pride myself on my thorough research!!! Certainly the doctor never mentioned this side effect and I just gave it up to being 49!!! A little early for Alzheimer's!!!

The funny thing is I have also had skin problems (acne) for the first time in my life the past couple of years with it really getting bad last summer. I weaned myself off the Lamictal b/c I had read it could cause acne (another thing the doctor never told me). Well, I was completely weaned and omg, the mood issues were severe!!! So reluctantly I titrated back up to the 200 mg dose and immediately my mood was stabilized.

I don't know what the h--- to do, but something needs to change. The memory thing is terrifying!!! No wonder I am having so many problems with my job!!!

Maybe a new med, maybe not . . . My main issue was severe depression (both situational and chronic) which Lamictal seemed to stabilize. Do the benefits outweigh the side effects??? I think NOT . . .

FRUSTRATED IN MICHIGAN :(

Hi Everyone...I've been on a bipolar cocktail for 3 years and one ingredient is LAMICTAL along with Lithium and Wellbutrin. Overall the drug has worked and I feel pretty healthy mentally. Of course I am particularly concerned about my memory loss, putting a sentence together and finding the simple words for basic objects. I really do feel dumb, especially at work, as I am in sales. Many times I stutter, fumble and go blank in front of customers. I have not told my boss or anyone else that I'm on the meds, so I know they think I'm just a dumb-ass. I'm ok with that. I also quit going to school for my master's because of the short term memory loss and general mushiness of the brain. I was once an honor student and very outgoing, now I just keep my mouth shut when I can in fear of making a fool of myself. My balance is off and as weird as it sounds I have trouble parking my car straight in a parking space. My co-workers have commented a few times that I don't know how to drive. At first I thought it was my car, the tires, alignment, etc...but when I got another one, it's still happening no matter where I park. I'm 43 and have acne and underlying bumps on my face, chin and neck. I did lose weight though! So, I can empathize with most of you. I'm not thrilled with being on these drugs for what may be forever, so I guess I need to decide whether to stay on this stuff, reduce, taper or change drugs. LOL to all.

My 17 year old son has been taking Lamictal for seizures for 2 1/2 years. He started out at 300 mg a day and was seizure free for a 1 1/2 years until November 2007. Since then his physician slowly increased his dosage to 500 mg a day. and he hasn't had another seizure . Unfortunately, Since the increase he has acne on his jawline and back. We are trying to find a way to get rid of the acne, but have been unsuccessful so far--decreasing his dosage is not an option as he has grand mal seizures. Also, he has these tiny red bumps all over his arms. His dermatologist say's they are a hair follicle problem, but I think it's quite a coincidence that they started when he began the Lamictal. If anyone has any suggestions, we would greatly appreciate them.

I take 200mg for partial seizures, added it to neurontin about 9 months ago.
At 300mg I lost the ability to type correctly and would forget what I was saying in the middle of a sentence. I forgot phone numbers and lost a ton of weight. My doctor said that meant I was on too much. I'm glad he put be back to 200 instead of upping the dose, which is what I see most people doing - adding more. I am taking as little as possible to keep the seizures away, and I feel pretty good on it.

My side effects currently are constant movement of my jaw and tongue, and my new side effect is a strange involuntary movement of my arms and legs. I especially notice it when I'm on the computer and I move the mouse, my arm jerks. (At least it jerks in the direction I want it to!!)

Overall, I am happy with it and feel lucky that I'm not having any terrible side effects. The jerking thing is a bit concerning since it is new and I hope it doesn't get worse.

I do think my skin has gotten messed up - not quite acne, but redness under the skin. No bumps though.

Oh - the tip of my tongue gets numb about 15 minutes after I take it. Weird.

I had been on Lithium for a few months when the consistent weight gain and uncomfortable bloated feeling caused me to seek out a new treatment for my bipolar disorder. Deciding on Lamictal, I started the slow transition of lowering Lithium doses and increasing Lamictal doses. About one month ago, the transition was complete. I didn't seem to have any real noticeable side effects from the Lamictal but after about 2 weeks of being off the Lithium, my skin started breaking out with acne!! Terribly on my chin, cheeks and hair line. I am now wondering if the Lithium may have been keeping this symptom under control. Has anyone had an experience like this?

Hi all! I googled acne and lamictal and here I am. I'm so relieved to see that I'm not the only one that has experienced breakouts due to the meds. I had struggled with acne in college, but now i'm 24 and it's back worse than ever! Does anyone know what to do about it? My doctor said a dermatologist wouldn't help because the lamictal is messing with my hormones and I just have to wait to get adjusted to it - but I've just started on the 50mg and the plan is to go up to 200mg within the next few months, and I don't want this to get worse! Thanks!

I have been on Lamictal for about 3 and a half yrs now for Bipolar 1. Overall, I have had a really great experience with the drug. I started with 100mg and then went to 200mg after a year and a half. Now I take 225mg as of a month ago. For about a year and a half I had the acne on my chin and then it went away suddenly (thought it was cutting out dairy from my diet though). I have been extremely fatigued for awhile now. 7hrs of sleep is not good enough for me so I end up taking long naps when I have the opportunity each day- I always want to sleep. I feel stupid and lack focus and motivation. I use to be a social butterfly and now I feel so exhausted when entertaining. I am a personal trainer and am in the business of making others feel better, but I seem to be feeling worse. I have experienced weight gain as well and that is hard for me since I use to be bulimic and have always had poor body image issues. I was on the NuvaRing for 5 months and it made me sooooo depressed so I finally got off that and feel better- don't mix those 2 drugs.
I am going to ask my doctor to take me off of it this week because I am ready to trust God with my mental health. I have a great support system to help me through the tough times and if I want to get pregnant, I have to go off it anyway.

Has anyone stayed at the 25 mg. dose? It's all they will have me taking.

Even so, after one week, I am noticing acne- I wondered about that; haven't had it in 20 years- and dry mouth.

I've been on 200 mg Lamictal for 2 months now, after 4 month titration up from 25mg; Going off Lithium 900mg titration to 450mg this week. Since 1st day of lower Lithium, all the common Lamictal symptoms went from mild to extreme. Whole body muscle aches (like 24 hours after a heavy weightlifting workout) worse in neck & back/shoulders/calves, bad headaches, swelling in hands & feet, extreme blurred vision, loss of memory, halted speech while trying to figure out what to say, fuzzy. I called the Clinic to simply ask which NSAID (aspirin? ibuprofen? Excedrin? naproxin?) to use to manage the pain. They all freaked and made me come in for a blood test to check Lithium levels. I explained I wasn't "overly" concerned about it at this point, but just looking for a recommendation, and that they may be over-reacting (even though I did appreciate their concern). I also reminded them that I had just **decreased** Lithium when it happened, so I wasn't having a Lithium Toxic attack (I'm well-versed in that, having been on Lithium for 7 years). It didn't do much good to tell them I thought their diagnosis was a little off. I'll find out the blood test results today, but I'm pretty sure I know what they'll be. They also wanted me to see my PCP since it could be something else. Again, the problem was a ramp-up of existing symptoms the next morning after I lowered Lithium (the only change), so I'm conviced everything centers around that. I think they're a little inexperienced with this med. (Lamictal/Lamotrigine) and if they'd just read this blog they'd probably learn a lot. They had never heard of the muscle ache side effect. Pretty hard to believe after reading all of your comments! My theory is that Lithium was somehow holding back the side-effects of Lamictal and now they're expressing themselves more fully. I haven't read anything like this on any internet discussion, so maybe my body is very different. But maybe my experience will give someone else some insight in a similar situation.
I might also mention something that happened to me I have only seen (kinda) in one other "blog" about follicle (sweat gland) cysts. Yeah, I definitely got the jawline acne starting at the Lamictal 50mg level & increasing at 100mg. But I also got my first ever "cyst" that concerned me and sent me to my dermatologist for the first time in 30 years (I'm 47 and saw the old guy when I had acne at 17!). It started as a blind pimple on my chest the week I increased Lamictal to 200mg (final dose), but didn't go away. It continued to grow (not diminish) over 4 weeks to 3/8 inch round/pink/solid/itchy/burn-when-rubbed. So off to the "Doctor" like my father used to do on a regular basis (I know I'm getting old now) and scalpel/pop/stitch it was out. But it was real, not my imagination or hypocondria, and the timing of its appearance was right when Lamictal changed to full steam. Since acne appears to be a common effect with so many, it seems it's not unreasonable that this occurs occasionally as well to others. Let me be the 2nd to mention it. No "official" verification, but....
I'm not bagging on Lamictal, and have been very hopeful that this would be better than Lithium. It has eliminated the GastroIntestinal problems I had on Lithium, but I am getting discouraged that it has all the brand new symptoms that are discussed in this blog. Your "stuff" is real. I wish the Docs/Nurses/Case Workers would spend 5 minutes checking your comments out. It might bring about a better informed conversation than the shiny Glaxo flyers provide. That is all.

I have to comment on some of the Lamictal "new comers". I've taken Lamictal for 1 1/2 years. For the first 6 months, this was the miracle drug. As months went by, I began all of the same symptoms: fogginess, weight gain, short-term memory loss, NO libido, headaches, and nausea, to name a few. As of this moment, I am weaning off of the Lamictal. HARD to do. This is not a drug that can be "stopped" immediately. On my fifth day of weaning off, I am dizzy, tired, weak, irritable, and have vomitted. Only about 3 days left. I am starting Topomax after. I'm anxious to see if there is any difference. Especially the weight gain part. I went from 120 to 135 in one year. (I run and eat healthy meals.) I will continue to take Effexor, which, in 2 years, has had little or no side effects. My advice to anyone just starting to take Lamictal is to GO SLOWLY. My doctor had my doses increase so rapidly that I didn't really see if the lower doses would have worked. (I take 200mg.) The bottom line is to do what feels right for YOUR body, rather than a specified dosage. Best wishes to you fellow BP-ers!

I feel like I should share my positive experience with Lamictal to balance the negative reviews. I am on it for bipolar II. I sought help because of a mixed state that was causing me to deteriorate to the point of seriously considering suicide. I titrated up on Lamictal from 25 to 50 to 100 and now 200 mg. I started the 200 mg last week, and suddenly yesterday and today, it's like a cloud has lifted. I feel like myself again.

I've had very few side effects. I have the relatively-rare yawning issue--I yawn every few minutes even though I'm not tired. My dreams have been especially vivid, which I actually enjoy. My facial acne seemed to be a bit exacerbated at first, but it's calmed down. I have a couple of small blemishes on my chest and shoulders, which is unusual for me, but it's minimal and responds well to benzoyl peroxide. My weight has stayed the same.

My bipolar has affected every aspect of my life, and I feel more stable now than I have in years. I'm sure there are still rough times ahead, but the relief Lamical has given me is a huge gift. I feel hopeful for the first time in months.

Also, it seems to have increased my libido. Like, a lot. I'm not complaining about that!

Everyone's body is different and reacts to every medicine differently. After experiencing depression for some years i was finally put on an antidepressant (cymbalta). My dosage was continually increased because I wasn't feeling any better. Eventually I changed psychologists and she diagnosed me as being bipolar II and said that anti-depressants have an adverse effect on people who are bipolar. so for about a year and a half i was on 200 mg of lamictal. It worked wonders and i felt no negative side effects other than if i forgot to take my second dose during the day. Eventually i took myself off of it (slowly, in the same fashion that i had started it) and was off of it for about a year. Getting off of it was hard, but eventually i felt ok. Then a year later i felt i needed it again. So after a 3 months of being on it again my doctor took me off of it because i experienced extreme head pressure-to the point that i felt like my head was going to explode. i had a checkup at my regular doctor and nothing was wrong. once i had the lamictal out of my system i felt fine again. well now a year and a half after that, i started the lamictal again in hopes that it would work like it did the first time for me. Unfortunately that has not happened yet. As i write this, my head has so much pressure. I ve experienced headaches on and off for the past 4 days. This is not a common side effect so im not sure whats going wrong.. Has anyone else experienced this or know why that is happening? Anyways like i said the first time i was on lamictal for a yr and a half and i felt fantastic. I would tell people i "loved it"---which sounds silly but when you go from absolutely miserable to feeling alive again and having motivation, that phrase doesnt sound so silly. so take everything you hear with a grain of salt. experience it for yourself because everyone's body is different and who knows, maybe you will feel better on it. I however am stopping this drug tomorrow because of the rare head pressure i experience while on it!

I've been on Lamictal for about 5 months now. I recently have had some horrible side effects. I've had the acne, brain fogginess and weight gain all along. About a month ago I was hospitalized for having a blood phosphorus level of 0.6 which is dangerously low. The symptoms around that day were nausea, feeling like I couldn't breathe, hyperventilation, heart rate of 120-130, tingling sensations from my nose to my toes, diarrhea and almost blacking out. Of course, the ER doc thought I was having a panic attack and told me to breathe into a bag and try to breathe slowly. NOT from a panic attack. Granted, I was panicking because I was scared. Has anyone experienced this low phosphorus problem?? I will be coming off of Lamictal in the next week. Hasn't made my depression, panic attacks or sex drive any better. thanks.

I'm taking Wellbutrin and Lamictal (150 mg for both) for at least 5 months now, as a mood stabilizer. Like many people have said on here don't let these bad reviews scare you away from trying it, at the very worst you will take it and not like it so you can stop. But for me it was amazing how it stabilized my moods. I didn't expect it to be so noticeable. I had tried Topamax right before but it was terrible for me- it made me sooo out of it and I had a very hard time talking (finding the right words, pausing in sentences frequently) Lamictal didn't do that to me. I have started to get acne on my jawline like many others have posted, I didn't think it would be related but I've NEVER had acne on my jaw and cheeks they are really tiny bumps of acne, but a lot of them. The reason I started to look at this site for people's side effects was now I have terrible neck soreness and stiffness. I mean BAD. It's slowly working it's way to the middle of my neck as the day goes on and feels like it's going down the middle of my back as well. Very weird, I haven't exercised or done anything in the past 4 or 5 days that would have pulled a muscle, so make what you will out of it but I'm going to stop taking this drug. It's unfortunate because I really did like it and am worried how my moods will be after stopping it. But TRY IT, it has been at least 5 months of me being more stable so that alone is worth the clarity. Also, I'm a woman with usually heavy periods but didn't have that side effect with this drug and I lost weight didn't gain any with this one either, but I'm sure that had a lot to do with the Wellbutrin which is notorious for weight loss rather than weight gain. Also, if you start to feel good at a low dose as I did DON'T INCREASE IT! I hate hearing people say their doctor's wanted to get them to the "therapeutic dose" even when they felt good, your more likely to have neg. side effects if you go higher than you need. Everyone is different in how their body metabolizes the medicines. Do your research and hold your ground, make sure you have a doctor that will listen to you, that's key.

I am 32 years old, and still have acne. I have been taking it for almost 14 years now. I know that Lamictal causes skin rashes. I asked my neurologist if Lamictal causes acne. He said no. I will never be able to get rid of acne, as long as I keep taking it. I have been seizure-free for over 2.5 years now. Dad won't let me get off of it, and be on primidone only. It's more important to keep driving seizure-free, than to have clear skin.

I'm sorry to hear all the bad side effects you all had with lamictal. I was on lamictal for depression for about a month and a half. I started low, 25mg. But when I got up to 100mg I started to itch! No rash, just itch, about a half hour after I took it! I was in denial, of course, because I had been feeling on top of the world! I had a loss of appetite, which I needed due to the fact my migraine meds had me gain 40 lbs over the last 2 yrs and NOTHING would take it off. My energy level had come back....something the Abilify had taken away a year ago....I'm getting off that very soon. I hate it. It takes away mania for bipolar disorder, so they say, but I'm slightly different....borderline bipolar II,so it takes away my personality, my get up and go, my motivation, you name it. I'm only on 5mg. When I was on 10mg, it knocked me out....I'd get the kids to school, come home and sleep, and be in and out like a drug addict all day til it wore off in the afternoon. Anyway.....lamictal.....I'm back on it.........starting at 12.5mg a day, then 12.5mg 2x a day, etc up to about 50 or 75mg, no more than that. It was a great help to me so I'm not going to let myself get those darn itches again. I did notice a little bit of intestinal irritation in the beginning last time, but that was only for a few days. I take Wellbutrin and also take Topamax 250mg.....and have a ton of hair falling out....and acne, so i feel for those of you with those symptoms. And yes, I still get migraines and still am depressed. But life goes on....I have kids to raise. I just cry in the shower and in the car. The best to all of you....good luck with your meds! Keep on trying!

I have been on Lamictal for just under 1 year and only today realized that my increased acne is probably a side effect. The area around my jaw line is especially bad and it won't clear up. I've also gotten a few little pimples on my chest - I thought it was from going to the gym. My derm has tried oral meds and I'm about to try Accutane, but I really don't want to go to that extreme - Accutane scares me! I also noticed similar effects to the ones that others were talking about, too...forgetting words...forgetfulness...spelling...I want to go off the Lamictal. This just isn't worth it.

I was prescribed Lamictal strictly for migraine prevention. I'm up to 200mg/day and have been for 3 or 4 months now. I honestly don't think I see enough of a reduction in headaches to justify the breakouts. It's not severe but irritating to always have a couple of pimples when my skin is normally clear. Additionally, my skin is remarkably DRY, despite the acne.

This is a total nightmare and i need advice! I was on Lamictal for a year and about six months into my health began to slowly deteriorate. It started with shortness of breath and heart palpitations and eventually attacked every system of my body. My symptoms are muscle pain, spasms and knots to the point that i can't turn my neck sometimes, joint pain (mostly knees), stabbing floating pain everywhere, headaches, frightening tingling in my extremities and a few times my entire body, sore throat, flu-like feelings, stomach cramps, bloating and heartburn. The list goes on. I have been off of it now for two weeks. My psychiatrist has never seen this type of reaction before and is not convinced it is the Lamictal. I have been to every single type of doctor and the ER twice, had extensive lab work, CT scan and two MRIs. I have been off Lamictal now for two weeks and am not feeling much relief. I am so scared and frustrated and please need advice. Has anyone else experienced this? Does it ever go away? I've been on Lamictal for about a year (for bipolar). Tried lots of anti-depressants and this has made a huge difference. I take it with Effexor. The big thing I want to add here is that I have done better on only 75 mg of Lamictal a day. They tell you it isn't a therapeutic dose but who knows what is for sure for each of us!? When I went up to 100 mg many of the things people say here happened worse. I went back down to 75 and have been so relieved to be semi-normal feeling--the best I've felt in many years. If you feel better at a certain dose, why do they insist on going up so far? Something to think about. I do have more acne, jawline rash that itches and definite sore muscles. I too have gained at least 15 lbs this year, not eating any differently--and they say it doesn't create weight gain! For me, the side affects are the lesser of the evils for now. I know it's made me more sane and that is huge.

I have been experiencing a flu like symptom for over a year now. They started about 2 months after I began taking 350mg of lamictal a day. Symptoms include exhaustion, headache, soar/achy throat, post-nasal drip, TONS of nausea, lack of digestion & regurgitation of food. I am tired and feel warn out all the time... I have had everything checked by doctors and they've found no health reasons to explain these symptom's.

HAS ANYONE ELSE EXPERIENCED THIS????

I was prescribed 100mg. Almost immediately, I had horrible acne, espcially on my cheeks. My vision was also blurry and I was pretty tired, most of the day.

my 13 yr. old daughter has been on 150mg. per day for about 9 months, have noticed major acne(cheeks, chin -very inflamed), huge wt. gain-from 92-134 lbs. in 6mo., she started her periods mid April and has had long periods with heavy bleeding and now for the second time in 31/2 months is anemic despite being put on birth control pills to stop the bleeding- she is exhausted-sleeping 12-14 hours per day-this is not her usual pattern.Previously thought her wt. gain was from Seroquel but even after being off it for 61/2 months there has been no wt. loss. The only other time she has had wt. gain with a med. is Tegretol- so maybe I shouldn't be suprised that she has this response to anothe AE.

I have been taking Lamictal for just over a year. Some of the side effects have been noticable for a few months, but others seem to just be appearing and getting worse. I have loss of balance and coordination, my vision is gettng worse, I have a hard time concentrating and finding the right words, I forget how to spell common words, I have short-term memory loss and feel spacey. I can always figure it out, but it takes longer. I began doing Pilates every day about 3 months ago and still cannot get the routine down and it is just as hard for my muscles as it was in the beginning. I can't seem to lose weight and have horrible acne on my face. I had 2 seizures before beginning Lamictal and am suppose to be on it for 2 years before trying to go off. Without insurance though, I am unable to do follow-ups w/ my neurologist and she seems unconcerned and unsypathetic to my situation, not giving me the time of day. She never even told me all of these side effects could develop, much less that they might begin long after I started taking Lamictal. Has anyone had these side effects after having taken the Lamictal for so long then stopped taking the Lamictal? Will these side effects go away after I stop taking it??

i am currently at 100 mg at night. Have had chronic issues with keeping food in or down. Have gone through dramatic weight loss and fluctuation. The acne I can deal with, the headaches are bearable, and even the muscle aches I am growing used to. It is the severe dizziness that is getting to me. I will get lightheaded so quickly, and on several occassions have lost my hearing and twice have actual passed out. I thought perhaps this was due to lack of sleep and food deprivation, but continued once got both those a bit more on track.
Additionally, have been extremely irritable, anxious, unsettled and ANGRY. I have had horrible nightmares, fear, and when I sleep, only do it for periods of 1/2 hour or so before I wake up sweating, with heart racing and often yelling. I have had issues with extreme anxiety in addition to the diagnosis of bipolar variation. I want to try to stick with it till I am up to 200 mg per dr, but am growing discouraged.

Right as I got to my full dosage- nausea. It was just just like morning sickness. It got better after a month.

Now, I just figured out that is causing acne. I never had perfect skin, but it seemed to getting worse. I finally figured out that it was from the medicine when I started breaking out in bunches of little pimples on my back.

After reading other side effects, I guess I have been sweating a lot also. Especially at night. I have had to be careful about making sure I don't get too hot at work (like when wearing a suit jacket.)

Can't wait to see what is next. Maybe it is what is causing my sore neck.

I have exactly the same side effects ... dizziness, light headedness, ataxia, weakness, migraine headaches and nausea. I walk into walls, lose my balance and stagger. I take 150mg all at one, at night. I've been taking it for over a year but just recently have started experiencing all the effects I just listed

Re my post #14305 on Nov. 15, 2005: SAW MY PSYCHIATRIST RIGHT AWAY ABOUT ALL MY SIDE EFFECTS. SHE CHANGED MY LAMICTAL DOSAGE TIMES TO 100 MG IN THE PM AND 100 MG IN THE PM, NOT ALL AT ONCE, AND TOLD ME TO TAKE CLONAZEPAM .5 MG THREE TIMES A DAY TO CALM ME DOWN. THIS WORKED! ALMOST ALL SIDE EFFECTS ARE GONE! EXCEPT THAT I STILL WAKE MYSELF BY YELLING. SHE THINKS I AM HAVING VIVID DREAMS I DON'T REMEMBER AND THAT THIS IS CAUSING THE YELLING WHILE I'M ASLEEP. I AM HOPING IT WILL SUBSIDE. OTHERWISE, I FEEL ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!!

FOR GOD'S SAKE, READ THE LITERATURE THAT COMES WITH LAMICTAL OR GET SOME LITERATURE FROM YOUR PHARMACIST IF YOU DON'T HAVE IT. THE RASHES SOME PEOPLE GET ARE REALLY TERRIBLY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY! THEY CAN BE FATAL! IF YOUR DOCTOR DISMISSES IT, FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND GO IMMEDIATELY TO THE E.R. OR AN URGENT CARE CLINIC, AND MAKE SURE THE DR. YOU SEE KNOWS ABOUT LAMICTAL AND THE SIDE EFFECTS! THE MEDS SHOULD BE STOPPED IF YOU GET A RASH. NOT ACNE, BUT AN ACTUAL RASH, LIKE HIVES OR ANYTHING THAT APPEARS TO BE A RASH! BE SURE YOU SEE A DR. WHO KNOWS ALL ABOUT LAMICTAL OR WILL AT LEAST READ UP ON IT. I HAD ONE TRIP TO THE E.R. (BECAUSE MY DR. WAS NOT AVAILABLE AND HAD NO BACKUP) ABOUT TERRIBLE SEVERE SIDE EFFECTS OF LITHIUM I WAS ON AT THE TIME AND HE DIDN'T KNOW S--T ABOUT LITHIUM, I WAS TREATED TERRIBLE BY THE NURSES AND I JUST GOT UP AND WALKED OUT. THEY BILLED MEDICARE $958 FOR MY 2 MINUTES WITH THE DOCTOR. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE HOSPITAL AND GOT NO RESPONSE WHATSOEVER. IF THIS EVER HAPPENS AGAIN, I WILL NOT GO TO THE E.R., BUT TO AN URGENT CARE CLINIC. EDUCATE YOURSELF! DON'T JUST HANG OUT THERE IN THE WIND, WONDERING....

I have just started taking Lamictal and typically have sensitivity to meds. I take it for mood stabalization along with effexor xr 150 mg. Moy dose of Lamictal is only 75mg right now. But I have been getting acne again which I haven't had to deal with in over a year and a half. I go my occassional pms pimple or two even but now I am constinantly fighting the blemishes, including a couple of new ones on my back which I haven't gotten in probably 7 years. Frustrated is an understatement. But it is good to hear others are experiencing similar systems and I am not as confused finding the cause for this. Memory loss, lack of focus, disorientation, confusion are also the scarier of the side effects I have been experiencing. Today something new and very scary happened. For a split second I had to grab my desk at work cause I literally felt like the room was spinning. Not see swirls or anything but like when your on the til-a whirl at the amusement part. Does anyone have any idea what that could have been? I have been feeling a bit dizzy since also. Anything neurological really scares me. Does anyone also know what other mood stabilizers if they have taken any have little side effects from their experience?
