Levaquin and sleep

A week and a half ago my doctor prescribed Leviquan for a sinus infection that I had. The day that I started taking it I noticed that my left shoulder was hurting when i streched my arn out and lifted it over my head. My heels began to be sore and I developed a rash around my buttocks. Being 67 tears old, at first I attributed it all to my age and thought it would get better. I have had rashes before and got over them. I began to loose sleep and then there where 2 night where I didn't sleep at all. This is when my suspicions developed and then last night I went to bed and awoke an out later on fire. I have a rash coverinng my entired body now. i tried to use the restroom but could not releive myself. I went to the computer and that's when i found that all of these symptoms are for Leviquin. The urination problem has to do with crystalization of the drug in the urinary track or something like that. I called the doctor's office and was immediatly taken off the drug (I had alreadt taken myself the damn stuff) and told to take bynedril. If it get's worst, go to the emergency room (Well Ya!!). My name is Heather I am now 32 years old I took levaquin when i was 29. After i took levaquin I went on a roller coaster ride I have yet to be able to get off of. First when i took it I had the worst night mares i have ever had only to wake up to a splitting headache and a very sore body. took another one the next day same reaction.I figured it was the bronchitis that was causing the problem. on the third day i was worse still I could hardly move. I stopped taking the drug. after another two days i felt better. two weeks later I was out with my father and he noticed a rash on my legs. I was also starting to get little blood blisters. I started to become concerned and the next day after going to the zoo with my family i came home and my legs were swollen three times there normal size and very sore. I put them up just to find the felt like play dough had been stuffed in to them and I had blood blisters the size of pencil erasers. I made an appointment to see the doctor. he said and i Quote " Heather I have No idea what the Hell you have" he sent me to a specialist. between the time of my first appointment and the appointment with the specialist my legs stopped working from the hips down i was 90% paralyzed (not spelled right ) they just wouldn't work right. My ten year old daughter was helping me get to the bathroom. I was soooo sick i had a headache all the time couldn't eat or sleep and when i did it was only for a few hours I couldn't move very well and to get up out of bed hurt so bad i almost fell every morning. by the time i had gotten to the specialist I had gone to the E.R. three times for the pain.and the last time was because my toes stopped moving altogether. at the appointment the doctor ran all kinds of tests checking me for everything from S.T.D.s (which i have been happily married for years) to Lupus. I felt Like and 80 year old Lady And like i said i was only 29. after the extensive tests and everything coming back normal the doctor put me on a steriod. for 4 months i was told i had to take prednisone After the first dose i could move again I still hurt but i could move.But now i had the side effect from that. i was gaining weight like it was going out of style, but at least i could move. after the 4 months things seemed normal kinda. I could move but if i sit still to long my legs go numb not fall sleep go completely numb even if i am standing to long. I am still afraid that i will wake up again feeling like i did that Fall three years ago. I still have problems but im not sure they are tied in but it wouldn't surprise me in the least. I only took three Pills of Levaquin three years ago!!!! How long does this stuff hang on really??????

I have just finished Levaquin 500m once a day for 10 days for a horrible sinus infection that would not go away with Zithromax. I am about to finish my Dexpak(dexamethasone) tapered dose in 4 days. I have taken Levaquin and dexamethasone before with no problems. This time I have insomnia and the worst joint pain. I am 33 years old and 135 pounds I feel like an inactive obese 70 year old. I can't sleep right now because my joints are killing me. It is even hard to sit on the toilet and get off the toilet. I find my food sits in my chest. I have started taking Probiotics and I put a heating pad on my chest which feels like a board after I eat. I am glad I am finished the medication and only hope I start feeling better. I cannot sleep only 7 hours after taking my first dose of 500 mg of Levaquin for a possible root canal infection. I never have trouble sleeping and I am going nuts! I toss and turn. I am not going to take this tomorrow. Is there another antibiotic recommended for dental infection other than levaquin or Cleocin (allergic) that would work with less side effects? Help! Carley

Hello everyone, I did a posting on Sept 27th will my adverse reaction to levaquin. Well, I did a lot of research as to how to help with the side effects. In addition, I discussed the side effects with a friend in medical school to see what he could come up with. I did not even bother going back to my doctor because from many stories that is just a waste of time.

Anyway, its been about 3 weeks and my side effects have gotten much better. Not totally gone...but much, much better. Everything was from my local drug store.

Here is what I did:
Do a colon cleanse or detox regimine right away. Get as much of this stuff out of your system as possible.

Fish oil LIQUID FORM one teaspoon a day (yuck...but do it!)

Bromelain to help with the joint inflammation

Glucosamine to help with joint repair. I got both a pill form as well as liquid. I used this product by Drinkables called Liquid Joint Care Dietary Supplement. Anything in liquid form absorbs quicker.

I also had to resort to getting a sleep aid for the insomnia, you need to get good sleep somehow to help your body repair.

Last but not least, and I know it sounds strange. One small shot of clear vodka a day. It's an old Russian remedy...I guess it has a cleansing effect on the body.

Anyway, somehow all of this really did help. Good Luck!

The doctor was observing me for very low globulin G levels and had me on 500 mg Keflex for a month trying to make my body "respond"? I took a bad sinus infection, went to my ENT, and he took me off the Keflex and put me on Cipro (500 mg) twice a day. I had taken this almost two weeks when my ongoing appt. with the first doctor came due. I called her office and they said I must come on in to get my lab work done. I did and she saw how sick I really was. She took me off Cipro and put me on Levaquin which I had never taken. During the first three days, I got sicker and sicker.
I thought it was just the "sickness" getting worse. One day I sat staring into space for over an hour without realizing what I was doing. Also, that day I noticed large knots in various places (under the skin). I live alone and became increasingly concerned. May I say, during that space in time,
I lost 25 lbs almost immediately. Nassau, sinus worse, felt terrible, and
hurt like the dickens. I could not sleep (and still have problems with it) and thought it all me, having never read anything about side effects. That night at 2a.m. I found the sheets that came with it, read, and identified with
everything written on the paper. I had to take one hand and put it under the opposite arm at the shoulder to help move it from my side. The muscles in the upper arms were like - separated. I found large knots under
my arms as on my body in various places. I could not raise my arms away from my sides. At 8 am I phoned the doc's office. They said, oh! it couldn't be that bad. I faxed the underlined, highlighted sheet to them and fifteen minutes later they called. The doctor said not to take any more
and it should be out of my body in 48 hours, if not see my primary phys.
She knew my GP had retired to help with her son, and had talked to me about taking her place until I got someone. A lot of it was out of my body in approx. 48 hours but my right arm (upper) and upper right leg was a mess. It is some better after April - Oct. taking medicine, therapy, and exercise but I still limp, especially when I get tired. There had been no strength for a long time. It was like the muscles separated and tendons enlarged, strutted, are very painful. The challenges are great up and down steps, etc. Can't lay on that side at night, put pillows under and between legs and when the doctor examining did a "frog-leg" with the right one, it didn't want to hold me up for several days. When I walk it gets to hurting very badly. Can't cross my legs when I sit. Wiggle and turn when sitting.
The very bad thing is this: The doctor never tried to help me get over this. When I went to other doctors for help, most of them looked the other way completely. For example, I tried to tell my new primary about the problems and pain from the muscles and tendons - he suggested lab work and a colonostomy. A rheumatologist kept saying I had "hip" pain. He did sent me for therapy though with a diagnosis of tendinitis in the upper arm.
He never addressed the case and cause. I would like to know if this is something to last the rest of my life. What can be done? You can only have therapy so long. An assistant told me to look this up on the internet.
I did not know this existed but I'm glad to know it has not all been my
imagination or "in my mind". My symptoms: dropped 25# in about three weeks, nausea, depression, sleepless, severe pain, taunt stretched tendons, droopy separated muscles,dizzy, and more. If anyone has any answers of who to contact and what to expect, please tell me. I've had anyone I talked with or saw to make note to never give this to me again.

I was prescribed Levaquin 750 mg 3 days ago for a sinus infection. The first day I was just in bed. I could not sleep because my neck hurt so bad. I figured I had slept funny on my pillow. The next morning I woke up and took my second pill. I got so very dizzy and when the lawn guy wanted a check, I discovered I could not write. My hands were so shaky and weird that I could not even write my name. I had to call someone to pick my son up from school because I was scared to drive. I could not sleep that night but did take my third pill. Today I got up and could not lift my right arm. My shoulder hurts so bad and I can't lift my arm without extreme pain. I am not going to take another dose. The Dr. did not tell me any of this could happen. I won't take this medication again. I hope I will be able to lift my arm soon and this horrible shoulder and neck pain will go away.

I had a sinus infection and my doctor handed me samples of Levaquin, 5 doses at 750mg each. I took it for the first 2 days, couldn't sleep, forgot to take it on the 3rd day because I finally was able to catch up on the sleep that I missed from the 1st and 2nd day. Took the third dose and noticed that my shoulder (left shoulder) was starting to hurt, I thought I had slept on it the wrong way, until I started looking at the side effects on the 4th day after I took my 4th dose. After I read the side effects I threw the 5th dose in the trash. I love my doctor and he has always helped by giving out samples, but what the samples don't tell you are the side effects. Needless to say I have been off of it for 2 days now. I am sleeping slightly better, but now have to adjust the way I sleep because I can't raise my arm any higher than level to my shoulder with out horrible pain. I am 28 and very active but now I fear that I may have to worry about rupturing my shoulder. I think I will head back to my doctor to see what I can do.

I have been on Levaquin for about 4 days now and i have been having a hard time trying to sleep and found myself being restless when trying to relax. I would get mad all of a suden and begin to force my body to move, which in turn caused my muscle weakness to increase. I also am now noticing that since i started this medicine, my testicles have had randome feels of pain as well as when my girlfriend decides to mess around w/ me, i find my self going up and down, incapable of keeping it up as a result. has anyone else had this problem? how long after im off this medicine will this stop?

I am taking Levaquin one time a day, 500 mg. for diverticultis. I have fibromyalgia so attributed symptoms of EXTREME FATIGUE to that but this is fatigue like I've never known. I can't do much of anything. I don't work outside the home so will just deal with it if it cures my infection. I'm using sleep meds too...but that could be fibromyalgia kicking in too. But fatigue is much worse. I hope it kills those bad bacteria!

I was prescribed 7 days 750mg of Levaquin on 9/10 and finished 9/16. I was originally diagnosed with bronchitis but went back to the Dr. yesterday cause I was not doing any better and he now says it's viral. I've gone to the hospital because I passed out on 9/13 and continue to faint at least once a day. I have tingling/numbness in my hands, ankles, toes, my knees hurt, my lower back is in a lot of pain, almost to where it is not tolerable, I'm dehydrated (I'm drinking and eating, just not as much) it is extremely painful to eat, my tongue and my gums hurt terribly. Last night I had a horrible dream (I don't dream usually, not nightmares) and today I started to hallucinate (mildly) A week ago I was functioning normally, a mother of 3, playing with my kids and now I can hardly walk without assistance, I can't go to work, I'm in constant pain. Someone please give me some kind of guidance. Will these feelings ever go away? What should I do? Thank you!!!!

The funny thing is, I've taken Levaquin 4 or 5 times in the past without noticing any problems, but last week I was put on Biaxin for a sinus infection and had a terrible time with it, so the Dr. changed me to Levaquin, and now after 3 days I'm back in the same boat...heart racing, unable to sleep, elevated blood pressure, nauseous. It feels like my heart is on fire! I'm stopping this one today (only had 2 left.) This is awful, I know I was very sick and had to have some antibiotic, but after these two experiences I think I'd stick with the sinus infection!

I am 23 years old. I was prescribed Levaquin 750mg for a uti. I took my first pill at 3:00pm yesterday. That night, I wasn't able to sleep. I layed in bed, so tired, just wanting to fall asleep but couldn't. Then the cold sweats and trouble breathing started. By 2:00 a.m. I was having what I can only describe as a panic attack. It's 1:00pm the next day, and i've never felt this bad. THIS MEDICINE IS NOT GOOD.

Last year, starting July 5th till August 20th, at the age of 15, I am female, I had to take this devil of a drug. For nearly a month, after getting out of a hospital for a massive kidney infection caused by a kidney stone. The month I went through was a total hell; I was up all night, nearly every night, vomiting what I had managed to eat during the day. Cause of this I lost over 50 lbs and became underweight, from being unable to safely eat without vomiting minutes after the consumption of food. It gave me pseudotumor cerebri, and papilloedema which has nearly ruined my eyesight. It has also caused psychological effects with me caused by hallucinations, I cannot sleep without a nightlight, I am very paranoid of mirrors now, it has left me with depression and paranoia. I do not recommend this drug to anyone, as I am afraid it could cause death! I truly would wish this on no one, not even my enemies.

I had a hip replacement in June, then contracted a staph infection after that (non-MRSA, thank goodness!), for which I have been on a 12 week antibiotic protocol, in addition to having the hip opened again for cleaning and replacement. For the first 6 weeks, I had a PICC line in my arm, which was infusing Oxacillin every four hours 24/7, as well as two oral doses per day of Rifampin. After the removal of the PICC line, I was put on a daily dose of 750 mg of Levaquin (I was also on Levaquin in the hospital, and couldn't sleep for weeks after coming home from the hospital). I have now been on Levaquin for 4 weeks and have incredible pain. The first symptom and most annoying was insomnia, as well as EXTREME rotator ruff pain, stiff fingers, tendor pain in my left elbow, and right knee. I can't walk well, the bottoms of my feet hurt (what's up with that?), and I can't even put on my bra by myself, my shoulders hurt so much. I thought I could take the pain because I just DO NOT want to have the staph infection come back and have another hip replacement, but I think I will actually have to go off of it. It's just too much pain. And I'm worried about long term damage.

I have been on 500mg Levaquin for approximately 10 days, and thought I was doing fine. I did notice that I felt a bit hyper, but not enough to bother me. Then, last night, I simply could not sleep. I have had insomnia at times in the past, and I have found that mild sedatives such as Valium and Ativan work quite well in small doses. But last night, even after taking Valium, I was simply wide awake. There was nothing particular on my mind - I just couldn't sleep. I got up at 3am to pay bills out of sheer boredom laying in bed. Ultimately, I got a total of two hours sleep. I decided to research if the insomnia and overall hyper feelings might be a side effect of the Levaquin, and read the insert for the first time. And there it is on the first line of side effects - difficulty sleeping. Then I Googled it, and found this site. Apparently, I am not alone. So today, I will contact my MD, and most likely suspend the Levaquin.

I am diabetic 2- and was given levaquine 700 mg for two nights to recover from urinary infection. I hardly could sleep first night and was uncomfortable all night. The second night when I got sleep at mid-night, I was fully awakened in next hour by palpitation of heart which hurt my neck and left side down to the legs. I was rushed to cardiologist and was under gone all the necessary tests from sonogram to stress to necular . The heart did not show any damage but I am now suffering from irregular palpitations and my left shoulder is very tender occasionally causing muscular pain on left side of my chest. I can not lift a gallon of milk with my left hand and am compelled to rest in the middle of the day otherwise I start hurting in my chest. I hope no one is given this strong doses and that at night. Please go for old antibiotics in milder forms to begin to cure.

I was prescribed 750 MG of Levaquin after a ER visit on Saturday, August 16th for a sinus infection. Both Saturday and Sunday I had diarrhea. I took the second pill on Sunday and I did not sleep the entire night. I was sweating so much. I felt out of sorts and scared in my own home. I started to turn on the lights. I even tried to sleep with my bedroom light on. It was an awful night to say the least, I won't go into all of the details. But I did start to question not only my physical health but mental. I knew I had been stressed out, but this never happened to me before. I was not able to work Monday. I took the third pill Monday not realizing this was all a reaction to the antibiotic. I was speaking to a close friend late Monday afternoon about my horrible night. I did not tell her what I was taking. She informed me that one time she was taking a antibiotic, Levaquin, and that she had a similar reaction and even hallucinated. I was relieved to know that I was not loosing my mind but it was the medication. I called my doctor's. office and they said stop taking it. They said they were aware that this had happened to some patients. Gee, thanks for telling me in advance. They suggested I take Benadryl to help me sleep. Needless to say, what a horrible experience I had. And this night was worse. I was sweating even more, could not sleep, tried to take a shower to cool off and then I started to hallucinate. I tried talking myself out of it, but the medicine was too strong. I called my God Mother and she talked me through it. Again, all the lights had to be on, I felt very anxious and scared. IT WAS AWFUL. If you have a sensitive system I would not take this! It is now August 21st and I still can not sleep. I am still out of sorts. I wish I knew in advance. All I know is I am telling everyone I know, DON'T TAKE LEVAQUIN!!!

Im only 16 years old and ive been on levaquin for about 3 days now. My doctor told me off the bat that the only thing wrong with the drug were some "theories" on cartilidge damage, how ever, now i see for myself, and for many other people that is not the only side effect. He told me that no one under 18 is supposed to have it but i caught a severe case of sinutitus, and a uti which ive had for 2 months and nothing was working, so he put me on levaquin, once a day for 7 days. Ive now been having the following symptoms and im extremely scared!!
1. Constant fatigue
2. Extreme Migraines
3. Nausea, vomiting
4. Rapid heart beat (and chest pain)
5. Stiffness in joints and horrible pain...
6. Constant anxiousness, to where i cant get to sleep
7. Dizziness

Is there anyone i can talk to who's had these same problems? please email me or something im scared and i don't know what to do my mother doesn't believe me and she says its just a head cold....

Please help me!!

I was prescribed this Levaquin antibiotic for 7 days duration. Day one I started feeling nausea, fagtige, my brain just thinking weird stuff. I thought it was my sickness. Day two my condition was took a deeper turn: I couldn't sleep, I was so hot (inside my body) took off my cloth ran around the house like a crazy person, even thought it was cold in the winter. I started thinking of suicidal, depression. my heart beat was pumping so fast, I tried to calm my self down by listen classical music, that didn't help either....I went to emergency room, doctor prescribed me a different antibiotic...that medication still affect me today...I still keep the bottle to remind myself of that medication...long story short..

My wife has sinus infection. Her doctor prescribed Levaquin. She took one last night (08/12/08), she couldn't sleep, headache, nausea...etc. I warned her many times before about this medication, but I didn't realized she taken the medication or bought this medication...

THIS IS A SERIOUS. LEVAQUIN IS A BAD MEDICATION. STOP USING THIS LEVAQUIN NOW. we need to organize a group for FDA to prohibit this medication for good. Even class action sUit to stop the company from manufacturing this medication. If anyone knows how and where to go about these, please let me know. This is for real, our health is more important. I too have been on a regimen of 750mg of Levaquin for an infection on my leg. On day 2 I could not figure out why my upper keft arm was hurting me so much. I as so many others, wrote it off to hanging drapes and cleaning out my pantry. Four days later the pain started in my right arm and again, I was trying to figure out what in the world was going on. It's an intense pain like I've never had before. I have Crohn's disease so I wrote some of it off to that as well. I saw my Doctor today and didn't even think about telling her about the Levaquin (different Doctor prescribed it). As I lay in bed this evening unable to sleep I decided to do some research on Levaquin as it was the only thing I could think of that was causing problems. Boy, did I discover something. Thank you all for posting your issues on this website. I will be seeing the prescribing doctor tomorrow and will let her know the outcome of the drug and will make sure that I will never be taking Levaquin again. Too bad we can't get this word out to everyone being prescribed this drug. It's dangerous and hardly worth it. There has to be something else out there that we can take. .

I feel almost lucky to have hardly any side effects considering what most of you have been through. I just finished about a 7 day prescription of Levaquin for pneumonia. Well, I remember the first day I took it I was lying in bed and my right arm started aching and my muscle in my forearm was throbbing. Then, my arm started to burn and tingle. I attributed to painting the ceiling my bathroom the night before and ignored it even though the script package said that that could happen and to call the Dr. The sensation was gone in the morning. The rest of the week, I had been extremely tired, anxious, nervous, restless, couldn't sleep, crying for no reason, I would pop off at my family which is completely out of character for me. I would fall asleep and then pop up in a panic spontaneously. Last night I noticed my teeth chattering and my throat and tongue feeling almost swollen. Today they feel just strange swollen but almost heavy and tense. Today was my last day on this medicine thank God! I too noticed that I was fine in the am but clawing at the walls by the evening. I am also on an ADHD medication (that the Dr.'s new that I was prescribed) and the added stimulant has made me foggy, antsy and jumpy and my muscles from head to toe will twitch and jerk. Thanks so much for the information. I will definitely inform any of my family and friends to refuse this medication.

I have been on Levaquin for 2 days. My Doctor had me take a 750 mg dose before I left his office. I am taking them due to a nasty bladder and kidney infection. I hurt more than I ever remember hurting...it is like someone used me for a punching bag and it continues to get worse, not better. I ache horribly. I cannot taste anything and I couldn't sleep more than two hours last night. I range between feeling hot and having the sweats to having the chills. If I don't feel better tomorrow, I will go to the hospital.

I've been on Levaquin for only 2 days, combined with Prednisone... Taking them due to a nasty sinus infection. One of these two meds is making every joint in my body hurts, as well as me having lost almost every bit of my sense of taste. I ate general tso's chicken today for lunch and could not taste anything, so as an experiment I ate one of those little red Chinese peppers that I normally throw out because they are WAY too hot - I couldn't taste a thing. Last night I had to drop the air condition down to 68 degrees as one of these two meds made me sweat very heavily and uncomfortably hot.

I was prescribed Levaquin for a bout of diverticulitis six weeks ago. About a half hour after taking it each morning, I felt completely unwell--dizziness, fatigue, overall weakness, odd sensations of pressure in my head, chest, and bladder, weird bouts of sudden joint pain. The worst side effect was terrible insomnia. I'd go to sleep OK, but wake up after 3 hours and not be able to get back to sleep, sometimes for the rest of the night. Instead of getting the rest I needed to get better, I was getting more and more exhausted. Now, a month after stopping the medication, my sleep hasn't returned to normal. I'm still awake in the middle of the night for two or more hours. Is this a residual side effect from Levaquin? Has anyone else experienced it? When can I expect my sleep to improve? Is there a way to detoxify from this drug?

I've never been on Levaquin. However I was on Cipro for over a month at 1500mg per day. I experience the sore foot, the aching knees, extreme fatigue (18+ hours a day didn't seem like enough), unable to sleep straight for 8 hours, Nightmares, unable to eat.

I've been off of Cipro for about 3+ weeks now and all of those symptoms have gone away. Just a week ago I developed a new symptom... my Hair is falling out rapidly. If I run my hands through my hair I get about 20 strands each time repeatedly. When I shower my hair clogs the drains. I just want to know if anyone has gone through the same thing as I have. I'm really scared right now... It has been a really rough last 5 months :(

Yes, sounds like we're on the same trip! Insomnia for 3 of 5 days so far, sleeping only 3 hrs a night, neck pain as well as knee and lower back. Oh! yeah, the queasiness and feeling like I want to jump out of my own skin. Should of asked for the 500mg dose vs 750mg. Unable to sleep during the day so I've had very little sleep.

I was given a 750mg Levaquin rx for recovery from pneumonia on 7-17-08. I was sent home and lost all my appetite and forced myself to eat. Next I never slept at all for the following four days, it was like I was wired to the max and nothing I tried could induce rest of any kind. I called the doctor who switched me to a new antibiotic, my appetite returned the next day and finally I got some sleep. I would say this drug should not be on the market. My recovery was slowed by four days due to this drug and my head is still a little foggy at times as the drug wears off.

I had bladder surgery and was given levaquin 500 mg. I took 1 pill when I got home that day and my entire face was swollen and I was also sweating and definitely couldn't even think of falling asleep. My mind was going crazy and to try to tell you how I felt it was kinda like I was in someone elses body looking through their eyes, it's the weirdest feeling I have ever had, I didn't know that it was the medication at first because I just thought I was feeling bad from the surgery and them putting me to sleep. The next day I took another pill, same thing felt really really bad, got up on the third day went to work and left in an ambulance. They told me it's because of this medicine and what's in it. I still feel really weird and typing this letter is killing my wrist. I don't know why because I am on the computer a lot before all of this and never a problem. I wish I knew what was going on with me. I feel like I am going out of my mind, and my swelling is no better. My husband even ask me if I took my lasix and I already did and still swelled up in the face. Any feedback would be great. please help.

My daughter took levoquin for 5 days because of a bad ear infection. it caused her to not be able to sleep. She went off of it and started sleeping again, but is having bouts of sleeplessness. Help. How long does it take for this to get out of your system? She is having sleeplessness again and it has been 5 weeks.

I have been on 500mg of Levaquin for 8 out of a 10 day course. I can barely hold my head up, have a headache and severe neck and muscle pain. My stomach is so queezy and I have been unable to get a full night sleep.

Anyone experiencing the same?
I am afraid to take the last 2 days of the course.

I was prescribed Levaquin in Feb./March for 30 days. I have had tremendous pain in my heels since then. I am walking slower as every joint and muscle in my body hurts. I can barely stoop down and it is getting worse. I can not sleep. I thought I was just going through some depression and stress until I started reading about it in the WSJ and now realize I fit many of the symptoms being discussed.
We all need to take some action as this is only going to get worse for everyone.

I was given a 5 day supply of Levaquin for bloody urine ad possible urinary tract. After 5 days, there has been no decernable effect on my urinqary system but each morning I wake up with an unreasonable feeling of dread and force myself back to sleep.

Muscle weakness, pain, tingling

After taking levaquin, I still suffer from muscle weakness, pain, and tingling several years later. My doctor who is one of the top specialists in New York has seen what this drug has done to me and is doing research for an article in a medical journal to put the word out of the horrible side effects of this drug as well as increasing the knowledge to hopefully figure out how to counteract this.

I took Levaquin for a kidney infection 500 mg. I was inchy all over. stomach pain. sever neck pain, and pain all over I feel like I was hit by a truck. no energy. my eyes get all heavy like I haven't slept in weeks. Alls I do is sleep and when I do I wake up very confused. I've been taking naps in the day time which I've never been able to do even if I was sick. I don't feel normal like I'm drunk and I don't even drink my sister says I even sound drunk. I get headaches. I have bruises all over in the places that I had itched. I still have kidney pain it feels like it's flopping around in there. Sweat a lot at night time. My heart sometimes beats really fast then thunks hard and then slows down. anxiety attacks. I cry for no reason. I called my doctor and he said he don't think it's from the levaquin that people only get a couple side effects not this many and put me back on antibiotics.

well im all done with my levaquin.. and i think this was a great antibiotic, other than the price,., i paid 100$ for 5 pills.. but i feel much better.. i didn't get any pains, or really any of the side effects seen on this site for levaquin.. im pretty much all better now.. only thing was the 1st night i couldn't really sleep. but i started taking it in the morning and i was fine.. all in all.. this medicine worked great for me.. JUST TAKE A LOT OF WATER THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND TAKE THE PILL IN THE MORNING AND ITS A PERFECT !

this is my second day on levaquin. the first night the sleep was pretty bad, but i took the pill late at night, so today i took it early morning , ill see if that helps. no other issues so far. still coughing up a storm though, hopefully i don't have pneamounia.

I have been taking Levaquin for 6 days. The doctor prescribed it for a sinus infection for 21 days. Day 1, I could hardly get out of bed, all I wanted to do was sleep. I am still very tired and my muscles are weak not sore. The other thing is my infection is not gone if anything (sorry about this) the mucus has become an even darker yellow - I would call it gold. How long does it take for this stuff to knock out an infection? I haven't experienced any other side effects (yet). I just want it to knock out the infection so I'm not on different antibiotics in 15 days.

I'm a 31 female. I was diagnosed with bronchitis/sinusitis on 5/28 and was given Biaxin which did not help. I was instructed to return to the doctor if I did not feel better within 2 to 3 days. On Monday 6/2 I returned to the doctors per instructions because I was not feeling better. He switched me to Levaquin 500mg 1 a day. I took Levaquin at 8pm Monday evening. I was unable to sleep that evening so I researched the medication the following morning and saw that Insomnia was a side effect. Starting at 10am today 6/6 I begun severe hip pain in my right hip. I called the doctor and they instructed me to stop taking the medicine for 24 hours and begin treatment again if the pain reduces. After reading this information I'm now reluctant to start "if" the pain subsides.

i was taking levaquin for steph throat in jan 2008 on day 5 i woke up with numbness in my right hands. looked on line and saw it was a side affect so i stop taking it ever since then i have numbness , and really bad pain i saw my doctor and i have carpal tunnel now in my right hand its so bad it wakes me up with such bad pain i cant sleep my hand hurts all day and with 3 kids one being 17 months its tough too do normal everyday things i cant believe levaquin did this too me

I was given this antibiotic - 750 milligram. Here I am at almost 4:30 am. I've had severe hallucinations and can't sleep. Plus, I have one of the worst headaches of my life and it is just above my nose between my eyes. This is the worst medication I have ever taken. This medication should be banned. I can't believe Bextra is off the market and this horrific medication is still approved. If I take another dose, I think I would be committing suicide. Lord help me not to go insane.

I hope the FDA reads these boards. I wonder how many suicides are connected to Levaquin? I hope that this will be researched.

This is the worst I have ever felt. I feel like I might need to wake up my husband. Is there a remedy for this mess? I feel as though I have poisoned myself by prescription.

I have been taking Levaquin 500 for bronchitis for 6 days. The first 3 days were fine. On the 4th day when I woke up the room was spinning. I went back to sleep for a while , thinking that if I did when I woke up, the spinning would have stopped but it didn't. From there came the nauseousness followed by headache and eye pain. I had no energy but could not lay down because of the spinning. For the rest of the day, I just felt bad, physically and mentally. I started crying for no reason. The next day was much of the same and I started thinking that this must be the medicine so I checked the internet for the side effects of this drug. My symptoms sound like I might have gotten off easier than some but guess what I am not taking that last pill.

Started a 5 day 750mg Leva-pak on Sunday after amoxicillin didn't touch my bacterial throat infection of unknown origin. My husband mentioned these boards full of complaints, but I was so miserable that I said I would be fine--never had a problem with a drug before.

Sunday brought swollen, painful knuckles. Monday had palpitations and painful sensitivity to light. Tuesday night I was wired and couldn't sleep at all, my heart was racing, and I had asthmatic wheezing and serious shortness of breath and borrowed my husband's inhaler. The pharmacy said insomnia wasn't a side-effect (which was misinformation) and I'd be fine as long as I didn't have a rash (more misinformation). I was finally feeling on the mend as the fever had broken Tue night and I attributed the symptoms to the infection. Then I took my next dose of levaquin.

Within 10 minutes of taking it, I was considering a trip to the ER. My head was splitting, I was extremely sensitive to the slightest motion, sound, or light, my heart was racing again, and I felt violently ill to my stomach all within 30 minutes. My throat swelled to the point I could hardly breathe or swallow my spit. My temp that had been normal since the early morning hours also shot up to 101. It was so drastic and sudden that there is no possibility the symptoms came from anything but the medicine. Short of contracting anthrax, I won't ever take this again.

AND my throat is worse! They put me on augmenting now. Wish I'd gone on it in the first place.

It's 2 am on my 7th day of taking Levaquin. I was prescribed the antibiotic after being diagnosed with a UTI. I still have a UTI even though I am finished with my dose. I am awake not because of insomnia, but because I've had my 5th nightmare this week. This one was so bad I woke up screaming and crying. I went outside for some air to try to cool off. I still felt terrible anger for the people in my nightmare and really felt like I was ready for the psych ward. Finally it hit me, the only thing I've done differently this week is taking Levaquin. These nightmares are intolerable! One was understandable I suppose but every night two bad nightmares a night! And these aren't just "someones chasing you" nightmares...these are terrors! After figuring this out I would stop taking this right away if I wasn't finished already. No one I know will ever take this medicine, I will tell everyone of this crazy medicine.

I am a 54 year old, very active female. Had a UTI and was given 750 Levaquin. I have taken 10 days worth and began having a sore swollen ankle, followed by right knee pain, followed by shoulder and arm pain. I have never experienced muscle pain to this degree before. I am scheduled for a doctor appt in 3 days. I started trying to imagine what could be causing this. I took a shot and looked up Levaqin side effects this morning, after another night of no sleep and severe shoulder pain. Well guess what, from everything I just read I think I found the source. The problem now is how do I get my life back???? The one thing I am sure of is it's time to stop taking the poison!!!

I started taking Levequin before a procedure I was getting (cystoscopy) and was told to take ot for 3 days, 500 mg. The first day i took it I had severe insomnia/heart racing/shortness of breath but I attributed this to nerves due to the proecdure I was getting , the night of the procedure I slept fine but I was also doped up on anesethia. Yesterday was my last night of Levaquin and I once again was up all night. Not only that but I have severe anxiety, feelings of hoplelessness, dread and just worry all day long. I don't knwo what to do. I am 31 years old and 2 weeks ago was feeling fine. I actually took some xanax last night for the anxiety and it really did nothing although it usually does help when I have minor anxiety. I really do not know what to do. I have to go to work every day feeling depressed, achy and lethargic. I just made another dr appt. 3rd dr in 4 days. I have lunesta at home but it rarely works for me. Any suggestions to help me sleep and get rid of the jitters??

I took 2 500mg pills of levaquin and within a few short hours felt extreme anxiety, my heart was racing, i was having depressed thoughts including death/dying and didn't sleep for 48hrs while i was on this medication. it has now been 3 days since my last pill and i am still shaky with anxiety, have no appetite, but am finally able to sleep a little bit.

this is the most horrible medicene i have ever been on - don't ever take it!

Are you guys for real? In reading through the side effects blogs it really reads like it is all the same person writing, maybe someone trying to beat up on the competition or something. It did scare me out of letting my 24 year old son take it for severe sinus infections, however and I just hope that two days of a 750mg dose per day doesn't show forth the negative effects in the days to come!! Please tell me it's not as bad as it sounds!

I was prescribed Levaquin 750mg for a virus which would not get better. The first night, I took a pill and within an hour of taking this drug, I awoke and I had a small case of heartburn. And it was hard for me to stay asleep. The next night, last night, I took my second pill. Within an hour, I again awoke. This time, the heartburn was bothersome. I tried drinking liquids and eating different foods. Nothing helped. The heartburn was more severe while lying down. I had an awful taste in my mouth and I was unable to sleep. After 22 hours, I still have this terrible heartburn. I have not been able to eat much. This is a terrible drug. I promptly threw these nasty pills away.

After being given Levaquin last year, I developed severe insomnia. After the 2nd day of no sleep, I flushed the rest of the pills down the toilet. I was unable to sleep until I finally got some sleeping pills from my doctor at week later. The insomnia lasted almost a month. It was unlike anything I have experienced before. Regardless of how exhausted I was, I felt like I could not fall into sleep, I would just float on the surface but could not go under. I was afraid I was going crazy from sleep deprivation and that I would never sleep again. It was a true nightmare. Fortunately, the insomnia did finally go away but I have placed a note in my medical files to never prescribe Levaquin to me again.
