i discovered that i had hyperthyroidism which was from grave's disease and grave's thyroid eye disease in jan. 2009. at the end of march i had my thyroid removed. never let anyone use the radiation treatment if it is in your eyes. my surgeon said if we had waited another week i would have been dead. they started me on 75 mcg of levoxyl. it made me mean, i prayed to God to let me die in my sleep every night. the dosage was changed to 88 mcg. my hair was falling out by the handfuls. i kept calling my dr. and being told it was normal. i lost 75% of my hair mass almost to non reversible. i have been on appearex and women's rogaine once a day and am using nioxin hair cleanser and conditioner for 2 months. i have new growth thank goodness. my toes almost froze off my feet, the headaches cannot even be described, i gained 40 lbs, this will be the 3rd time in 7 mos. they need to change my dosage to 100 mcg. my body cannot take it. today i am starting synthroid. until i found this site today i had no idea most of my agony was from levoxyl and it's side effects. thanks so much for all the information. good luck to everyone.

I have been on Levoxyl 0.112MG for about 18 years. I do have some of the symptoms described by others, hair loss, hot flashes, etc. , but I think the alternative to this is a lot worse. If I do not take it for long periods of time, it gets to the point where I am freezing cold and the bags that develop under my eyes are embarrassing. I think the problem with most of you that are having very bad side effects is the dosage. If the amount is off just a little bit you can feel like you were just run over by a truck. I went through this many years ago. I would suggest continuing to change the dosage until you get it right. I wish I did not have to take it but it is absolutely necessary in my case.

37 - Dx'd w/ Hyperthyroidism at 20 and have been on levoxyl since then. I started at .075 and was increased to .1 when I got pregnant w/ my 1st child at 29. I always thought I had anxiety so until I started reading the posts I didn't put it together. I was always shaky and nervous and super skinny before I was dx'd with hyper and after the treatment I was still anxious so I thought it was a different problem.

The anxiety has gotten much worse in the last few years w/ pressure, family, and career so I went to a psych last week and he gave me lexapro and klonopin. The klonopin had done nothing and I was treated 10 years ago with Zoloft which made things MUCH worse so I won't take the lexapro.

I recently switched to Synthroid .1 because I thought maybe the generic meds didn't work as well. I developed a small rash on my elbow a week or 2 later, then a week after that I got 2 big patches on my back over my kidneys. A bout 2 weeks later I developed a HORRIBLE itchy rash over my whole body. I thought the itching would drive me insane. I saw a dr who gave me prednisone (made me feel awful), after I took the dose pack it came back like crazy. I went to the ED and the dr gave me scabies medication (I was mortified) but nobody else in the house had anything. I went to the derm and they biopsied two areas and a week later have not given me the result. Meanwhile, I'm back on levoxyl and the rash is slowly getting better. It must have been the cause. Anybody else get that??

My doctor switched me from Levoxyl to Synthroid and lower the dosage too. From 150 mg to 125 and now I am on my 2nd day taking Synthroid. I started feeling so dizzy this morning about 2 hours after taking Synthroid. I had this problem in the past with Synthroid, Maybe my body will not take Synthroid very well.

I started taking Levoxyl for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis several years ago and got a headache at the exact same time every day, exactly 9 hours after taking the pill. They switched me to Synthroid (which in the end didn't work so I went on Armour Thyroid and have been great since.)

Hello... I started taking Levothyroxine last July for slight hypothyroidism. I felt great for the first 6-7 months, but then in January the problems started for me. I was getting severe anxiety which the doctor said was stress and he also thought I was depressed. I knew I wasn't, but he put me on Ativan and Prozac. The week I took prozac was the worst week of my life. I thought the effects I had were from the prozac, but now I know now it was my thyroid spiking, which the doctor never checked my levels during this period. My heart rate doubled, I had insomnia, was gagging, sick, felt like my body was on speed and wanted to die. I was prescribed a beta blocker for my anxiety previously which I had never taken, but decided to take when my heart was racing, which helped me feel a bit better for the week, but I knew something was wrong. I had this happen again recently for about a week (and I was on nothing but levothyroxine). I know what anxiety is and I have never had anxiety or depression my whole life until these episodes that happen when taking this medication. By the time I went to the doctor to get labs done, I had been feeling a bit better and he said my levels were fine. I am now wondering if it's side effects from the meds or if it is spikes in my levels making me hyperthyroid instead. All I know is that I cannot live like this!! I have a 3 yr old and I need to be happy and healthy like I used to be before this medication... no more heart racing, racing thoughts, anxiety, and insomnia. Please help!!

I am 34 years old. Back in 1985 I had most of my thyroid removed, due to a tumor attached to it. Since I was 10 until my late 20s, I was on Synthroid. By age 19 I had 3 knee surgeries to remove arthritis. I have suffered most of my life with joint pains, dry skin, weight that is like a roller coaster, and being tired most of the time. In my 20s I was put on Levoxyl. I has been on Levoxyl for several years now. Since being on Levoxyl I have been fighting anxiety, racing heart, joint pain in fingers and ankles, sudden dizziness to the point where i have to sit or pass-out. I feel like I'm 80 and not 34. After reading this site I am printing all this out and taking it to my doctor. No telling how much damage has been done after all these years.

weight-gain/ alternatives have been availalable.."Amour-thyroid" about.com any alternative medicine sites! Thy-Aid..etc,Synthroid does nothing for thy, roid issue Everything starts there! Bio-denticals deals w/ harmonal...read and learn..FDA lies! Alternatives have "Cured" ask "Breakthrough" Susann Sommers book w/ doctors! Larry King! Truth re: real cures for thyroid, not HRT's..yet another that has killed and/or close to from...Side-effects..alt's do not have side-effects.soon,if enough people stop being lazy and so afraid to take what will keep them alive and happy only then will ALT'S push the bad FDA approved poisons away! Both MUST be explored, but the FDA make billions w/ doctors who get kick backs from each script they write for the infamous SIN-Throid,made my life a horror..hypothyroid issue does not need syn! There are better natural things! Headaches, never get the right dose! Right thyroid tests? Endocrinologists will use those bio-denticals bec- hormone & Thy go together, for all of the idiots out there who think their doctors are sooo good, slowly they are killing them in many ways!

I've been on levothyroxine 150mcg for about 3 months before that it was 100mcg and so on. I have gain lots of weight and tired all the time. depression also, headaches. I hate this gaining weight, sleepy all the time and depression is from gaining weight. I thought this med is to up boost my thryiode but it doesn't seem to be working. my dr. said I'm on the highest dose there is. I don't know what to do any more. I was thinking about taking myself off this but not sure what will happen if i do. I hope there is someone out there that might be able to let me know if they are going through the same things what they are doing and how they feel now.

I have had great experiences with Levothyroxine. I am no longer tired, achey, grumpy, constipated. I feel great. I am only 27 years old and got my hypothyroidism from having my first child. I am excited that my levels are now normal after 3 months (TSH was 25.89). I was on .50 mcg now I am on .75. Feel great!
I am a medical technician and have found that a lot of people who start on a certain medication for hypothyriodism, such as Synthroid - do not fair well if they have to switch. My doctor always says NOT to switch...not EVER. She repeats over and over again to check my prescription every time I receive it. That means checking the pills against each other, because hypothyroidism medication is one of the highest missed - filled prescription. If I were anyone who has had to switch, I would demand to be put back on your original meds. Have your physician write up your symptoms with the new meds and make a recommendation to the insurance company that you NEED synthriod.

Hello, told my doctor today of leg cramps, facial rashes and numbness in feet....and specifically asked if they were related to Synthroid? He said no, I have been on it for 2months...and just upped script to .50mcg....and cramps are worse....I am going off the meds. I am in excellent health @ 64 and only went to this Doctor because of back pain.....was tested for a myriad of things...I had none of the symptoms for hypothyroidism.....what natural remedies are there for this . E.

I was put on Levoxyl for 20 years. Hair kept falling out, muscles aches, acid reflux, plantar fasciitis, carpel tunel, tired, cranky, brain fog. I could barely walk and had developed a stutter. I was to be tested for Alzheimers at 45. I was told there was no other drug for hypothyroidism and it wasn't the Levoxyl doing these things to me.

Well I found another drug thanks to the internet and Yahoo Natural Thyroid Group. It was Armour. I have been on Armour for about 2 years now. All those problems I had on Levoxyl are gone. Completely GONE! Wasn't the Levoxyl huh?

extremely depressed after a week of taking levoxyl. Also face is swollen, eye swollen and red and face and eyes burn. These were the same symptoms after taking synthroid after a week. What's next? I am close to being suicidal after having survived lung cancer, surgery, chemo and radiation. To get another primary cancer and have things slide downhill after such a remarkable recovery, I can do nothing but cry after making the decision to have a cancerous thyroid removed that could have served me for years and years since it was such a slow growing cancer. I should have followed my instincts and just left it alone. Now all I want to do is lie on the couch and cry.

I've been on the same dose of Levoxyl (118 mcg) for 11 years and I have none of the side effects that have been described. My mother and grandmother also have hypothyroidism, but my mom take 110 mg of synthroid, also prescribed by the same doctor that prescribed me. When I was in the 4th grade my thyroids swelled to the size of golfballs, so much so that you could see them when my head was up, and I was extremely tired and had hot and cold flashes- scary for a 10 year old! My doctor recognized it immediately, and put me on Levoxyl. About a year ago, I gained 15lbs for seemingly no reason, but then this summer I lost about 20lbs. The only difference was taking the medicine 1 hr before I ate anything. I saw someone said that after taking the medication she would get hungry, which I also have, but this makes sense, because Levoxyl is in essence trying to up your metabolism and by doing this you are burning more calories and thus become hungry. If you let this hunger pass, about 20 min later you are no longer hungry and feel great! I still get slight hot flashes, but not too noticeable. I would recommend just as other on here have, that the dose that your doctor may give you may not be 'your' number, and to give it time. If you change your dose, give it 3 months, not 5 days like I saw above! If you have to wait 6 months for 2 dose changes isn't that better than hurting your whole life? GOOD LUCK!

I too was a picture of health even with my TSH being off. My old doctor retired and a new one prescribed the levothyroxine.
I never have felt so rotten in my life. Extreme fatigue to the point I am given up many activities I've been involved in for years. Headaches and joint and body pain. I feel like I was hit by a truck!
I stopped the meds and felt fine..cept my cholesterol went up to 262 and my tsh 7 something.
The doctor scared me back on to the levothyroxine.
I am desperate. I wish I knew what to do.

I have been on Levoxyl for about 9 years and have felt awful. I have had weight loss, dry hair, thinning hair, dry skin, muscle aches, migraines and the list goes on. I just got out of the hospital Monday after 4 days of testing of my heart and lungs. I was admitted for racing heart. The doctor's conclusion was anxiety! They said that Levoxyl has nothing to do with my rapid heart rate. The endocrinologist prescribed taking levoxyl .050 on day and .075 the next also a beta blocker, Xanax and Zoloft. I can not take any of these meds b/c they make it almost worse. I KNOW it is not Anxiety and it from the Levoxyl but what do I do?? I am a mess right now can not be in this condition with four young kids and a husband. None of the doctors would say it was the Levoxyl and instead prescribed more and told me to check up with blood work in 6 weeks. I took the .050 yesterday around noon and by 7:30pm my heart rate picked up again and continued until 4:30 this morning. I can not sleep more then 2 hours at a time and wakeup feeling like I am crawling out of my skin. PLEASE let me know of any solutions.

After being on Synthroid for a few years and getting NOTHING from it, I was switched to Levoxyl for several more years, and got NOTHING for it either. They are some of the most useless medications ever made, and all they do is put money in the pockets of the maker. Armour is what made a HUGE difference in my hypothyroid. ******

I have been on Levoxyl 125 mcg for about two months after my thyroid was "killed" with the radioactive pill. Ever since I have been on this medication, I have constant headaches and feel sick on my stomach all the time. I had to go to the ER the past week because of the intense vomiting. The doctors tell me it's not related to my thyroid or the medication. How can this be? I didn't feel this bad when I was hyperactive thyroid. My wife has had to take care of our 18 month old all by herself ever since I have been taking this medicine. I feel like I am missing out on my life! This is terrible!!

I had always used the generic form of synthroid & then the generic form Levoxyl. The beginning of April 08' my endo prescribed me the brand name Levoxyl. I take 175mg. everyday. After several weeks I began to have terrible insomnia. It was weird because I initially fell asleep easily but began to wake up every hour of the night for no reason. This went on for weeks. I even tried taking Tylenol PM to help me sleep & I still would wake up every hour if not every other hour & I had very vivid dreams that I would remember. I began waking up in the mornings feeling exhausted from all the dreaming & all the waking up. I believe I became more depressed because I was so tired. Then I read on-line that someone else experienced this while taking Levoxyl. I switched back to the generic Levoxyl & now I can sleep through the night again. I still experience fatigue & have problems losing weight. None of that changed when I switched to the brand name anyway.

I have had a total thyroidectomy due to thyroid carcinoma about 2.5 -3 years ago. I have been on synthroid and levoxyl and both have caused tingling and numbness in my hands and feet, what I call a general fog (hard to concentrate or think, sometimes talk). I have been tested for neuropathy since endo said radiation may have caused issues. Only to be cleared by neurologist. Now endo switched does lower after rebout of cancer from 300mcg to 274mcg and have knee joints now going numb I want to sleep all the time, general weakness and now low testosterone levels.

I've been taking Levoxyl for approximately two years or Hypothyroid. Before that I took levothyroxine, but my symptoms were worse with that. I've never taken Synthroid.
When I was first diagnosed, my TSH level was around 144... off the charts. It tooks about 4 or 5 months before I got level. The medication seemed to make my symptoms increase. Each month however, my TSH level dropped.
I started feeling good when my TSH level was below 10. I felt awesome at TSH level 1.
My doctor became concerned that my level would drop too much so she lowered by dosage to .150mcg. Over several months, I noticed my symptoms returning. I requested to have my level checked but my physician said it wasn't time. By the time I was checked, my TSH was 20.
My dosage was increased to .175 mcg. The last two weeks after the dosage increase have been horrible. Migraines, vertigo, nausea, irritability, and absolutely no motivation.
I've been feeling better over the last two days and think I'm getting level again.
Don't assume your doctor knows you better than you do. Find out the number that works for you and fight for it!

Hi Ive been hypothyroid for about 12 years now. After i took radioactive iodine I was put on synthroid.125. Had blinding headaches constantly! Then after about 3 years I was put on levoxyl.125. Blood work sometimes comes back a little elevated but not much to say for the symptoms i am having still to this day.I am so tired i cant even go to the store. Symptoms are,
sever fatigued. headaches. muscle pain in chest and sternum. burning muscles, triggerpoints all over body. broken sleep .severe depression.Eye pain blurry vision lower back pain body feels like a punching bag.I could sleep for 12hrs and still be tired. These medicines have side effects that they are not telling us.I tried armour but it does not aggree with me. Im going to switch to either unithroid or leverthroid. If these do not work then i will try thyroler.Doctor wanted to give zoloft. Please I do not need bad medicine.
This all started when i had to take thyroid meds. Before diagnosis I was a fitness fanatic . I was doing aerobics heavy cardio, lifting weights etc. now i cant even ride my bike. The meds are no good doctors are a waste they think it is in your mind.Let them feel one day like this and see if they can function.I do not think they can.ill see what happens when i change my meds..fibromyalgia? no such thing Fibromyalgia is diagnosed when the doctors cant figure out what is wrong with you so they pawn off some atidepressives.

I have been on Levoxyl for over 10 years with no problem. When I picked up my refill two weeks ago the pharmacist said that the pill may be a different color but it's just that the company that was making Levoxyl sold it to another company and is now making it. Within a week I was very itchy, then I started getting hives at night and waking up with them in the morning. I also developed severe heartburn. I feel very full and cannot lie down at night. I also can't eat very much at one time because of the heartburn/reflux. My family doctor advised I call my endo which I did. She advised me that she has had patients all week that are having problems with Levoxyl that never had them before. She took me off the Levoxyl and put me on Synthroid. I will start that tomorrow morning and hope I will get some relief soon. The pharmacist said I wasn't the only one going off the 'new' Levoxyl, others have been in all week exchanging their prescriptions as well. Has anyone else had this same situation?

I love this page! I have been taking Levoxyl for about 6 months now and my joints are killing me. Especially my wrists and ankles. It hurts to even pick up a half gallon of milk or hold my kids. I am also so exhausted all the time. I was put on 50mcg when I started the medicine but I was not having any symptoms before I started taking the medicine. I am trying to wean myself off of the pills and am down to 25mcg. I am taking b12 and b6 to help fight the fatigue. I also am having a huge problem with my periods, I get them every 2 weeks, and they last a week. This is not fun at all. I am also getting cold sores like crazy. Before I started taking this medicine I would maybe get 1 a year, if that. Now I get at least 1 a month, sometimes 2. It is really frustrating. My skin has changed, so dry and I look like I have aged 10 years. My hair is brittle. I am looking into a more natural route to take, maybe the Armour thyroid would work.I have been to the Doctor who just tells me that it is not my medicine and could be something else. I know it is not something else. All of these symptoms started right after I started to take the medicine. I am going off of it to hopefully feel better. Thanks so much for all your posts out there!!!

I have been on Levoxyl for 3 years, changed from Synthroid. I have gained about 20lbs a year for the last 3 years, suffered headaches, stomach problems, dizziness and nausea. The last couple of months I have had migraines or bad headache more often, just about every day I feel bad. I stopped the Levoxyl and changed Dr's. new doctor said, stay on meds, changing back to Synthroid, but until meds are delivered I should stay on Levoxyl, I took a 1/2 dose yesterday and again today, I had a bad headache this morning, once again. I will not take Levoxyl anymore, I will wait for the Synthroid to come instead.

I have been taking Levoxyl for 1 1/2 yrs, I had my thyroid removed due to severe hyperthyroid. In the past year, I have been getting pains and weakness in my hands. It is so bad now, I can't open a jar or lift a frying pan. It hurts sooo bad. My legs hurt and my knees have real bad joint pain.
The funny thing is, it's not every day and not always both knees. It is however all the time in my hands. Last week I went to an Arthritis specialist in San Antonio. He ran every blood test avail. Tested for Rhum. arthritis, Lyme disease, AA, and all kinds of stuff. He x-rayed my knees and injected cortisone in my knees and hands. - that hurt -
He found nothing wrong!
I searched on line tonight for "Levoxyl and joint pain" and this site came up. Boy am I glad I am not the only one who is questioning this horribly possible side effect. Oh, I also have memory loss. I feel like I am 80 yrs old. Just to make sure you know what type of person I am, here goes: I am fit, active, 37 yrs old and 115 lbs, I eat well and take vitamins, non smoker, non drinker.
On Monday, I am calling my doctor. I am printing this web site and all of the postings like mine. There must be something I can be put on that will fix this. Can anyone tell me if they have no Thyroid and have gotten off this stuff; does the hand pain stop? Does it get better or is this permanent damage?

I have being taking thyroid medicine since 1994. I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and prescribed Synthroid. It didn't work. Instruct to take radioactive pill. Now, diagnoses change to Hypothyroidism. Prescribe Levoxyl. Endocrinologist said I would lose weight, but instead I have gone from a size 8 to 16. I feel really bad when I miss my doses. Really anxious when I take it every day. I am noticing that I have moles growing out and spreading all over my body. Switch back to Synthroid three months ago. That when start experiencing a great deal of hair loss. Decide to switch back to Levoxyl but a lower dose. The hair loss has slowed down a little. But, hair is growing slowly. I am having problems focusing and some memory loss. I really don't know what to do. I have change endocrinologist twice. I really think that Levoxyl and Synthroid have bad side effects on human after long term usage. I am miserable because I can't control my weight. I know that it has something to do with this medicine. If anyone know of some other medicine that would Hypothyroidism in check without all of the side effects that I mention. Please share it with me.

I have been on Levoxyl for only 12 days after switching from generic Levothyroxine, which I was on for 3 years.. I have no history of any GI disturbances and the last 5 days I have been extremely constipated, had horrible stomach cramps, gas and bloating. I am on no other meds, so my Doc and I have concluded maybe Lexovyl is not the right med for me?. Am starting name brand Synthroid tomorrow. In addition to the GI disturbances I have been having headaches the past week as well.

I was prescribed 25 MCG tabs of levothyroxine (generic for Levoxyl) by my MD for my hypothyroid. (I was tested at a 4.5 reading -- just below a normal 5 reading). After 60 days of taking levothyroxine EXACTLY as prescribed (i.e.; on an empty stomach, 1st thing in the morning with a glass of water; no vitamins for at least 4 hrs afterward), I started to have symptoms that I've never experienced before: my hands began hurting so bad with joint pain; my lips felt numb; and I was sweating more than I ever had in my life. I decided to stop taking the medication due to these symptoms, and in about 7-10 days from stopping, ALL these symptoms had disappeared and have not returned to date. I relayed this information to my MD who told me that my symptoms had nothing to do with Levothyroxine and that I needed to continue taking the drug. It's more than strange to me how some MDs will not listen to his/her patient -- even more so now that I've read other info on the internet where many other people have had these same side effects taking levothyroxine!! On my own, I am now looking into taking an all natural alternative that I found on wellness resources called "Thyroid helper". I will not take Levothyroxine again if I can avoid it by taking an alternative. Has anyone else out there had success taking "Thyroid Helper"?

Since changing from Synthroid to Levoxyl almost six months ago, I've gotten worse. I have much of the same symptoms as the one's i've read ie: headaches, swelling, numbness in fingers, fatigue, body aches, depression, hot and cold, but the latest one is very concerning for me, I never had allergies before, and now, my throat is always itchy, my ears are itchy, and it's making me crazy. Also, my fingers get numb and now at night my hands get very hot and itcy also. Can anyone out there relate? Thank you

I've been on levoxyl for approximately 10 years thinking the side effects were from my hysterectomy 6 years ago and being on hormone replacement therapy. I am irritable, agitated, unable to stay asleep, having more and more trouble recalling people I've met through work and retaining information. Family and friends have teased me. It's getting worse. My most bothersome side effect is that every night while after falling asleep, I've been awakened by extreme hot feelings like I'm on fire inside, not the same as hot flashes experienced by menopause. I'm hungry all the time feeling like I can't stop eating, luckily, not gaining much weight but picking on food as much as possible. I'm waiting for a phone call from my doctor to see how to stop using levoxyl and what I'll have to replace it with.

This is for a friend of mine diagnosed with Parkinson's and dystonia. All her big problems began shortly after hypothyroid diagnosis and her starting on Synthroid. Is it coincidence? Or has anyone heard of synthroid or thyroid meds promoting or mimicing Parkinson symptoms,or involuntary muscle spasms? Am I just imagining a connection?

I took synthroid for several years and became progressively more arthritic, with horrendous tooth problems and congestive heart failure. My doctor switched me to the lowest possible dose of generic levothyroxine for nearly two years, and during that time, I progressively felt better. Then they stopped making the generic 25 mcg, so I was switched to levoxyl 50 mcg (was told to split in half). Since then, the symptoms of aching joints and emotional rollercoastering has returned, along with sleep disruption and heart trouble. There is NO DOUBT that these thyroid hormones cause serious problems in many people. I am now trying accupressure to stimulate the gland, and slowly withdrawing the levoxyl. Already feel much better!!!

Just recently, my pharmacist re-filled my Synthroid prescription with a substitute (Levothroid). After taking it for about a week, I started to have AWFUL stomach pains. I was constantly nauseous. I asked my doctor and he said it was probably just acid indigestion and to take some over the counter remedies. I started to take Maalox and Alka-Seltzer, but they only seemed to help for about 30 minutes to an hour before the pain came back again. I asked if it could have anything to do with the Levothroid and he simply said no (Grrrrr!). I switched back to the Synthroid and the pains went away within a couple weeks.

I've been reading about all these side effects and can identify! I've a 2 seperate episodes of what I thought was nerve issues, 5 years apart, both postpartum. Have had tingling and numbness in feet, hands, lips, and tongue, and have as well been tested for ms. I also am having vision issues, eyes don't focus like they're supposed to. FYI- some people do better on synthroid, and some on levoxyl. I personally felt even worse on synthroid the one time I tried it.

I had been on Synthroid for years and felt fine. Switched to Levoxyl and felt the same. Then they put me on Levothyroxine and still feel fine. Then they upped me from .125 to .150 and I have felt worse since. A faster heart rate, dizziness, and always blacking out.

I have been on Levoxyl for 6 months now and I hate it. My eyes burn and itch. I feel tired all the time. Also sleep a lot. The tiredness hits me all of a sudden like someone flipping a switch on. I have never felt so bad in my life. I'm 50 years old and the doc blames the way I feel on old age. He did not discuss any side effects at all. When I was on synthroid I felt a whole lot better. But he changed me to Levoxyl.

Ok, I am and have been on this med (100 mcg)since April 05. It was suppose to help regulate my thyroid. I have not had a weight issue until 2 yrs ago and they recently found my thyroid become wacked after not having this problem for years. I have bloated up and feel like a stugffed pig, I drink the required water but that does nothing. I too get the heart palpitations or anxiety flutters where I have to STOP everything. My right foot and ankle sometimes become tight and numb but it is said this is normal. How true is that? I have read someof you experienced this. My appetite has not been supresssed and I see no bebeficial facotrs of this med. I am considereing a request to be taken off of this medication because its initial purpose was to HELP with my sudden weight issue and Thyroid issue and I went from 145 and now sit at 230 lbs +/- 7 lbs (water weight). I think we have a problem here and I need it fixed, any suggestions or has anyone else gained weight also or find beneficial uses of this drug? What happened to old fashioned synthroid they use to give out?????

WED, 29 JUL BY BETTY
63 YRS OLD - HAVE BEEN ON MED SINCE THE 60'S. FIRST WAS EUTHROID THEN SYNTHROID BOTH WORKED VERY WELL. SINCE MAR '05 DR CHANGED ME OVER TO LEVOTHYROXINE (BAD IDEA). HAVE THE FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS: FATIGUE, TINGLING IN THE LEGS, NUMBNESS IN HANDS BUT THE MOST UNBEARABLE WAS THE CRAMPS IN MY LEFT ANKLE & CALF. THOUGHT I HAD A PINCHED NERVE. WENT TO A CHIROPRACTOR WITH NO PAIN RELIEF, THEN A ACUPUNCTURIST (SOME RELIEF) THEN IT HIT ME...SIDE EFFECTS FROM THIS DRUG. QUIT TAKING IT & WILL SEE MY DR TOMORROW AFTERNOON AND INSIST ON GOING BACK TO SYNTHROID. I HAVE A HARD TIME COPING WITH THIS PAIN AND WILL NOT LIVE THIS WAY. EVERY STEP I TOOK WAS EXCRUCIATING ESP WHEN I HAD TO WALK FR THE PARKING LOT TO MY JOB. I EVEN HAD TO SIT IN THE BATHTUB TO TAKE A BATH MY LEG HURT SO MUCH. I THREW AWAY THE POISON (PILLS) THAT CAUSED ME SO MUCH PAIN.
THE CRAMPING COMES AND THEN SUBSIDES BUT NOT FOR LONG. TRIED USING THE HEATING PAD, MASSAGES BUT IT KEPT RETURNING. HOPE THIS HELPS ALL THAT READS THIS.
WOULD LIKE TO HEAR MORE FEEDBACK ON OTHERS EXPERIENCES. THOSE THAT HAD THE LEG CRAMPS CAN YOU RELATE HOW IT AFFECTED YOU AND TO WHAT EXTENT.
THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR SHARING YOUR STORIES , WHICH CONFIRMED MY SUSPICION ABOUT THIS HORRIBLE DRUG.

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism 2 years ago and originally I was prescribed synthroid. I was tired and cold all the time. I was switched by my doctor to Levoxyl 50 mcg about a year ago. I am only 10 lbs overweight I still have not been able to lose. Over the last 4 months I trained and and completed a 26.2 mile marathon and 3 different 13.1 miles half marathons (running) I have not lost any weight.
My enodocrinologist has recommended that I get checked again to see if the dosage needs adjustment. I have a feeling it is too high.I have recently had some symptoms such as hot and cold flashes, headaches, heart palpitations. I have more energy now than ever in my life. Other than the hypothyroidism I am healthy and should not have heart palpitations. and my endo says that the amount of running may have shocked my body into working more efficiently. I am to be tested in a few weeks. I don't know if this is true but I also heard that if you buy medications that are on the shelf too long that they lose some of
their potency.

I am a 16 year old female who has been on different thyroid medication for at least 3 years. Along with my thyroid disease I have type 1 diabetes also. Right now I am taking LEVOTHYROXINE. I have taken levoxyl, synthroid, and I cant remember any others. Over the years I have gradually increased my dose to 125 mcg. Instead of losing weight with these medications, I've actually gained 25 lbs, and Ive kept my slow metabolism. Ive experienced bloating, gas, fatigue, spaceiness-like out of it, unable to concentrate, increased appetite, and mild depression. I usaully am able to get fantastic grades, and catching on to things comes easy. But now ive lost interest in friends, sports and overall life. I am wondering if this thyroid medication or my other medication- Metformin has anything to do with how I feel or overeating?

I have been on Synthroid for 2 years now. I started out taking .25 and went all the way up to .75. I have since switched doctors and after he reviewed my records he feels I never had a thyroid problem. He has me going off of it slowly and I'm already feeling better. While on the medication I had major hair loss, gained 20 pounds, tired all the time, bloating, constipation and just felt bad. I'm hoping all of the side effects stop. I hate feeling so fat!! If any one else has gone off of Synthroid please let me know. Thanks!
