I am a 61 year old mail. Two years ago I suffered chest pain resulting in the fitting of two stents was placed on Lipitor and had the usual liver function test which proved normal. Initially I was put on a low dose but as my cholesterol level did not improve eventually I was placed on 80mg which is the highest dose and this did lower my cholesterol level to a satisfactory level. A few months ago I had severe unexplained back pain which I thought might be due to the statin and when I stopped taking it, very quickly the pain went. I have restarted the medication for about 6 weeks now and in the last few days have had intense pain in my lower legs, hips and lumbar region. I have decided now to stop taking the drug and will be seeing my doctor shortly. Although I am taking other medication (amlodipine, perindopril and bisoprolol) for blood pressure I feel quite sure that my intolerable pain is due to the statin.

I read with interest several of the posts here. I have been on Lipitor for about 5 years. I have been experiencing leg pain, back pain, neck, and hand pain for likely 4 of the last 5 years. I have arthritis, I thought. Two weeks ago I ran out of Lipitor. I read several other forums where Vitamin C and Omega 3 were suggested as a possibles to replacing the Lipitor along with generous amounts of water. I said, What the hell, I will give that a try. Within days of stopping the Lipitor, most all the pain has subsided to the extent that I have not had to take any other Pain management medications at all. I was prescribed Perocet for the pain I have been experiencing. Two weeks ago, I had a tough time opening a bottle of soda, or even a relish or pickle jar. Today I can! Coincidence, I think not!!

I have been on 20 mg Lipitor for years, and as I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis, all my symptoms have been blamed on that. I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and put on Lyrica because of the muscle aches and depression. My lower back, hurt in a car accident when I was 17 years old, had gotten so much worse that I had 12 steroid shots in my lower spine a couple of years ago. They didn't help my back at all, but my blood sugar went from normal to diabetic levels, and I am now on Byetta to try to lower it.
I am a 56 year old woman who was the math specialist in a school district until last December when I had to retire early. My back pain was so severe that I could no longer go from school to school carting materials. I could barely make it from the parking lot to my office. Mentally I was not ready to retire, but physically, I was (and am) a wreck. I have severe muscle pain in my shoulders, sometimes one or the other, but always present. I have tingling in my right hand, especially in my fingertips, and have trouble gripping and drop things easily. In the last few months the pain in my right thigh and calf has gotten unbearable. I thought at first it was sciatica, but I have had sciatica before, and this isn't the same, although there is tingling, burning , but the pins and needles is so deep in the muscles I have just sat and cried, or wanted to scream. I have wished I could just cut my leg off. And...I am on some pretty heavy duty pain killers for the RA: a small dose of prednisone plus Enbrel, Methotrexate, and Vicodin, and this pain is cutting right through all these meds. I get severe headaches, I went off Lipitor for 5 days and seemed a little better, but then went back on, and it came back.
Since I no longer work, I sleep longer, am exhausted ALL the time, have terrible mental fog, am clumsy, cannot stand for more than a minute or so without wanting to scream, cannot walk more than a few yards...just getting to the car is an ordeal. I tell people that I can only shop in shoe stores and furniture stores...the only stores with places to sit down.
I no longer cook or clean, cannot play with my granddaughter, even holding a book to read can be too much, and I love reading. I feel I am just dying bit by bit as I lose parts of myself.
My doctor is really into lowering cholesterol, and has put me on Zetia in the past few months...and it has been in this time that the pain in my leg has gotten unbearable. He wants my cholesterol to be between 50-60, and has said that the Zetia along with the Lipitor will do that. Is this normal or in any way reasonable??? I am having a full blood workup done tomorrow morning, and I want to go off the Lipitor starting the day after.
I came across this web site tonight while looking up Lipitor side effects, and I am shocked. I have so many of these symptoms, and there are so many I had no knowledge of at all. I knew about the muscle aches, but that's all. I hope someone can help me with what supplements and vitamins I should be taking. I started taking CoQ10 a month or so ago. What else should I be taking for my health? I know vitamin C and fish oil, but don't know how much or anything else. Right now I am just stunned with the thought that all of these problems that have left me unhappily retired, exhausted and in constant pain can all be caused from a drug I have been taking to help me be healthier.

I am a 42 male, I have always been healthy and felt healthy as long I can remember, I never went to the doctor. So this year, 3 months ago to be exact, I decided to do “the right thing”, start taking a physical at least once every years, who know something might be wrong with me and I don’t know it.
Anyway, after I took the physical and some blood tests, my doctors office calls me and they told me that the sugar was a little high (124) and that I am at risk for Diabetes, so they started me on a diabetes medication. Although my Cholesterol wasn’t high, they suggested starting Lipitor (20 ML) just in case because I am at risk and I don’t want to take chances.
A month into it, I started having some back pain, but never suspected medication. I was exercising at least 4 times a week, some cardio and free weights, so I thought, I might have made the wrong move while exercising or maybe sleeping without knowing it ( although I never recall such a thing). Usually it takes a few days for the pain to go away when I did the wrong move, but this pain wouldn’t go away. A month after that (last month), a sharp pain started on my right wrist (shooting pain), that goes up my right arm until my shoulder blade and upper right back. The pain was so sharp and wouldn’t let go, all day, all night and every minute in between. Also, I experienced some numbness on some of my right fingers (especially the thumb and index). I never suspected the medication. Of course the doctors wanted me to take all sorts of tests and MRIs etc..you name it. They also wanted me to go on pain pills (strong ones), I never did, and I used Advil instead, which did not help much. This pain ruined my two week vacations to France (I didn’t not want to forgo the airplane ticket and the hotel, they were already paid for).
I started “googling” the web for “sharp back pain”, just to get some clues, which led me to side effect sites, which led me to this site. I decided to stop all medications immediately 3 days ago, the pain went away, I still have s slight numbness on my thumb, although it is much better, I will keep you posted. Thanks to all the people who shared their story with us, I know that everyone of us could be a different case, what worked for me doesn’t necessarily work for someone else, I know that many here are frustrated about these side effects and whether they are permanent or not, I wish I have the answers. One thing is sure, Lipitor could be poison for some people, I felt going down fast for the last 3 months with no way to stop it, glad I found this site.

I am 60years and a stroke survivor of ten years.
About 9 years ago started on Lipitor 20mg until about 18months ago prescribed 80mg.
Looking back I have symptoms for quite some time, and thought it must have been from tthe strokes.3 weeks ago had a CPK blood test showed my level was about 300 over recommended ratio. Have been nauseas, light headed as though I am going to fall (even when I turn my head in bed) bloated, very hungry, put on weight, stiffness, sore or aching muscles. Have been on Luvox for depression since the strokes chest pain, back pain, shoulder pain foggy vision again, aching under armpit and groin areas, irritable, and always seem tired and the list goes on, even my speech seems to be worse at times
Have had two weeks of Lipitor and started to feel better, but had to try them again for this week. See doctor Friday and I wish to say never again do I want to take another lipitor. I live in Australia and would like to find more info. Any advice would be appreciated.

Trying to figure out if my back pain is like others. The pain is in the lower left side and groin area of both hips. I have trouble reaching my feet to put on shoes and socks. Ive been on Lipitor 20 for about 5 years and have never had a problem before. This started about 6 months ago and even with heat and stretching it seems to get worse. It hurts when I stand for any length of time. It hurts to walk or run. It hurts very badly if I try to straddle something like an ATV or a horse. When I sleep (if I can) I sometimes have to put a pillow between my legs and lay on my side because it hurts a lot to bring my legs together. Feel free to email me at ******

My doctor increased my Lipitor from 10 mg to 40 mg after my physical in January. My cholesterol was only 182 and my LDL was good. I am now being checked for rhabdomyolysis - a rare but serious complication from the muscle pain and weakness caused by the Lipitor. I never had these problems while taking 10 mg and I have no idea why he increased my dosage so much. I am miserable with neck, shoulder, and back pain and have been for a month. I thought I had hurt myself at the gym and have even been seeing a chiropractor for the pain. My urine is very dark, indicating possible kidney damage and I am so tired I can hardly make it through the day. My depression has worsened despite doubling the dose of my anti-depressant and I have no motivation to do anything. I am looking for an alternative to statin therapy, as I am a 38yo insulin-dependant diabetic and am at a higher risk for cardiovascular disease. Any suggestions out there on alternatives?

I have been on Lipitor for several years after experiencing a mild heart attack at age 54. Considering I roller blade and bike and use weight training to stay in shape it was quite a surprise. From the onset of taking Lipitor I complained of nausea every day but became more depressed as the months went by. Every thing seemed to be going wrong with my body. The weakness and numbness in my legs and knees to hardly being able to get out of bed in the morning with back pain. I am tired of doctors appointments and getting no where. I was finally directed to this site and every thing fell into place. As of today I am off Lipitor. I will keep you up to date in two weeks from now and let every one know.

very bad back pain, especially when getting up in the morning or trying to stoop. A strange sensation in my elbowsand knees-like a pulling feeling and a feeling that I need to stretch my arms, legs, neck and back. The inside of elbow,on the bone, very tender to touch, stiffness in neck. Soreness on bottom of feet, just below toes. Had been taking Boniva, but I stopped because I thought that was causing my pain. Didn't connect my symptoms to Lipitor until someone told me their husband had been on Lipitor and had stopped because he was experiencing same symptoms as me.

I have same back pain and stiffness. Can not do the yoga pose I used to do any more.
If I stop taking Lipitor for several days, the pain is gone. So I'm sure it is the Lipitor.
Now, I take lipitor(10mg) for one month, and skip for another month. Not sure if this would cause any issue, but somewhat midway solution for me to remove back pain and lowering cholesterol.

I have bad back pain and chest pain (plavix) the cardiologist did a second stress test in 12/06 and it was clean, the lipitor and plavix are the issue and at this point I have no choice other than to live with it or take the risk of clotting these medicated stents.....any thoughts please let me know.

I have been taking Lipitor !0 mg since Aug. of 06.Recently I have experienced progressively increased back,& hip pain & stiffness. Sometimes when I get up from chair or bed it is becomung harder . I thought that It was osteoarthiritis but my recent bone scan was unchanged from 3 yrs ago. (I recently stopped the Fosomax due to Gerd) I had hip & hips xrayed last week and will get results soon. In the meantime it occured to me that the problem may be S/E'S from the Lipitor.even I take COQ_10 a few X's a week. Have been off the drug for4 days now and the severe pain is subsiding anf I actually went for a short walk today as test. What do you think? Iam a retired RN and knew to watch for muscle problems but have had back pain (not severe)for years so I thought it was joint problema when hips started to occur. I am done with Statins.

memory loss, horrible back pain, joints pain, muscular pain, neck pain. I have had surgeries to no avail, I just had 2 Epidurals to my Lumbar and Cervical region, numerous MRI's, x-rays, and it all came down to Lipitor...I went to a spinal surgeon 8 days ago, begging him to do spinal surgery as I have some collapsed discs, he could not figure out why I had so much pain in my right side when the pain should have been on my left side. He stated that he wouldn't do surgery as it could make the pain worse. He could not understand what was going on..as I was leaving in tears because the pain was so bad, and I couldn't find help, his nurse caught me at the elevator and told me the doctor wanted me to try going off Lipitor for 3 weeks to see if the pain got better. I have been off of Lipitor for 8 days and the pain has already subside so much that it is unbelievable. for the first time last night, I slept without my Vicodin and muscle spasm relaxers. I have gone through memory losses, balance problems. I have been to nuerosurgeons, Orthopedic specialists, Neurologists, I have had 8 surgeries for joint pain. I really believe that Pfizer ought to reimburse us for all of our pain and suffering, our testings done, our Epidurals, our medicines that we have been living on. for the last 8 months the pain was pure hell. I hope the food and drug administration and Pfizer is happy with themselves for not releasing the true story and the symptoms of Lipitor that can and are happening to people all over our country.

I posted this past week as guest 13049. I did make it , I did go to my doctor the next day and was sent to the lab for blood work that day. I haven't received the results yet. However I stopped taking Lipitor and most of the symptoms have subsided. I think had I not figured out what was causing all the pain and weakness, and had taken one more pill, I would not be here today, it was that bad.
Thanks for the concern from forum members. I will report my experience to whomever needs to hear it. I think of all the unsuspecting people who perhaps didn't get the chance.
I lost months of my life thru the fatigue, muscle weakness, back pain, etc. I have also had severe knee problems for several months and went to an orthopedic doctor last week. He said my knee problems were from weakened muscles around my knee and has perscribed physical therapy. Is it a coincidence? I don't know.
At least I'm still here and getting better...but I will never taken another statin drug..guaranteed!!
Thanks

Has anyone noticed problems with alopecia with Lipitor? I have been on the medication for 5 years, and 2 years ago starting noticing thinning hair (female). I was off Lipitor for a few months recently, since I started back on the drug I've noticed I'm losing more hair again. I'm not experiencing the leg and back pain as others, but occasional swelling in the legs and feet.

I have been on Lipitor for almost 18 months. Initially. When I first started the med, I did not have any side effects like others. I felt absolutely fine. Recently, I had to take a epidural for back pain. Shortly, afer that experience, Lipitor began to show it's true colors so to speak. I became numb in teh genitals and impotent. My doctors could not find anything wrong. All lab test and the prostrate was normal. I had absolutely no sensation whatsoever. I was devastated since I really enjoy sex. As of today, I stopped taking this terrible drug and expect a miracle very very soon.

My primary care physician admitted that since he has been taking 40 mg. of Lipitor, he has back pain for which he takes pain medication at night. My husband was taking only 10 mg. of Lipitor for over a year and has had back pain. After my doctor told me of his back pain, I suggested that my husband cut his dosage in half. Since doing so, his back pain has decreased substantially.

I'm a 78-year old man, in very good shape for my age, was given Lovastatin 3 months ago. I began to have severe foot, calf and whole-leg cramps, left wrist & back pain -I had not had these problems before.
I cut the medicine in half for a couple of weeks, then stopped it entirely a month ago. These symptoms have improved greatly but I still have some of them and I'm afraid there has been permanent damage.
Has anyone else had these symptoms?

I have been taking Lipitor for the past 10 years or so. I never thought that taking this medication would or could create so many side effects until i started to read this site. I always thought, during the past several years, that my muscle pains, headaches and other unusual illnesses were related to something I did. (by lifting heavy boxes. turning to abruptly a certain way), etc...
In the past couple of years, back pains and bowel pains have increased to the point that it's getting hard to stand for long periods at a time. I find myself using any kinds of heat to try and relieve the pain.
Also, someone on this site mentioned about not being able to sleep, well I have been having problems sleeping and my doctor prescribed a sleeping pill....hmmmmm! I wonder.
After reading alot of these postings, I am thinking of getting off this medication and see what will happen after a few days.

I STARTED TAKING LIPITOR A YEAR AGO. ABOUT 10 WEEKS AGO I WOKE UP WITH A BACK PAIN SO BAD I COULDN'T WALK, MY RIGHT SIDE HURT FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY RIBS ALL THE WAY DOWN TO MY LEG. i FIRST WENT TO A CHIROPRCATIC DR. HE ADJUSTED MY BACK BUT SIDE & HIP STILL HURT. SO I WENT TO MY DR WHO SAID IT'S NOT THE LIPITOR. I HAD A SONAGRAM & A CT SCAN NOTHING SHOWED. I QUIT THE LIPATOR 3 DAYS AGO. THE CHIROPRACTIC DR HAS PUT ME ON A LIVER & GALBLADDER FLUSH. I WONDER IF ANYONE ELSE HAS THE HIP,SIDE & BACK PAIN. I WONDER IF I'LL EVER BE ABLE TO WALK OR STAND WITHOUT PAIN. IT HURTS SO BAD TO LAY DOWN FOR MORE THAN A FEW HOURS, TURNING IN BED IS A REAL JOB. I'D LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU. i'M 51 GRANDMOTHER OF 13.

Can't think straight; mumble my words; difficullty solving problems; leg and back pains; no energy - my doctor can't work out why. I've been on 20mg Lipitor daily now for 3 years. Not any more. Other minor things since going onto it - wobble when I walk, lose balance, dry eyes, not interested in sex. Did I say minor?
After Lipitor guess what their next best seller is? Viagra. Funny that.

I was recently hospitalized for 5 days with a bad kidney infection which lead to a blood infection. To this day my doctor can not understand what really caused it. All my bood test for kidney problems come back normal. I also have noticed loss of memory and my moods have changed dramatically. My husband and family get very frustrated with me alot lately. After reading all these emails and side effects that people are suffering from, I have decided to stop taking this medication today and see what results occur from doing so. I will get back with results.

I started lipitor 10mg about 3 years ago, then went to 20 mg. I began having knee pain, hip pain and low back pain. Doctors said it was arthritis, put me on celebrex, but nothing worked. I was put on 40 mg lipitor about 6 mths ago, then began to have dizzy spells, low back pain so bad I cannot walk unless I am on walker or pushing shopping cart in store. No one believes I am in the pain I have. I am now having so much pain I can hardly get out of bed and taking a shower is the hardest part of my day. I also had a heart attack about 3 months ago. HELP I knew nothing of the side effects of lipitor until today when I accidently happened upon this web site. I plan to quit taking lipitor today. Even if it ends my life I will be out of pain

I am a 49 year old male, and have been on lipitor for a few years. Was on 20 for a while and then went to 40mg. I had started with back pain which I did not initially attribute to lipitor. But also had other symptoms such as tiredness. I find it hard to get out of bed. But the weakness and back pain became so great that I did not feel like lifting anything at all. On a recent trip, my wife had to carry the suit cases. I have quit taking lipitor for two weeks, but am not feeling any better. I feel like I am 80 years old. I only hope this reverses itself. Oh, I also had foot pain when I walked occasionally, again, I did not link lipitor to that, was thinking it was just old age. The pain was in the arch of the foot, I thought it was weird. I did take nexium at the same time I took lipitor.
My cholestoral did go down a considerable amount, like from 230 to 159... but, there has to be a better way. And my liver functions are still normal.
I would be interested in learning about anyone who recovers, how long it takes, and if there is anything that will help this problem.

I had 2 stints put in Mar2000. Arterial blockage 90%. Took Lipitor for 2 months.
Felt worse than before heart attack. Discontinued Lipitor. Feb. 2004 still no
improvements. Muscle pain, weakness, spasms, buzzing in right leg. Cant hold
arms or head up in vertical postion for 2 minutes without extreme pain and
weakness. Sitting or standing for 10 minutes is not possible due to back pain.
Have to keep moving until exhausted and then sleep. Use good diet and all the
exercise I can tolerate.I do NOT take any pain meds except aspirin or tylenol.
This is crazy. I walked home from the hospital after the stints and went
downhill after taking Lipitor. Any advice will be appreciated. thank You

I'm a 59 year old female with all kinds of medical problems, including those which would cause me to take lipitor. They've also now put me on a cholesterol blocking agent. I have the leg, joint and back pains. Recently, however, I've begun to do some alarming things, such as forgetting to pay at the checkout counter, not being able to focu, forgetting where I'm going and why I'm going to a place. I feel like I'm in some sort of stupor. At first I thought it was low blood suger. Lately, however, it happened and my blood sugar was normal. I, too have sores in my mouth and under my tongue.

I have been on Zocor and Lipitor for several years. I have had muscle pain over most of my body. I was diagnosed with arthritis by my Dr. Recently I had blood work done and my liver panel is elavated and am in the process of having tests to determine problem. I stopped Lipitor 4 weeks ago (without the advise of Dr) and am having pain but not as much as before. Other symptons have been tired, sleeplesness, short term memory loss, constipation, heel pain and have been to Therapist with neck and back pain. Since coming off Lipitor, not as much pain but still bad. I have had heart racing since coming off and am worried about that. How can we stop others from taking the drug.

I have been taking lipitor for 2 years and have esperienced hand swelling with muscle and leg pain. Hair loss has also been noticable. Also have considerable amounts of hand/feet swelling. I have been seeing several doctors for back pain/shoulder pain with the recommendation I need surgery. They have never suggested the medication could be a contributing factor.
I am stopping the lipitor and see doing more research. Thanks for your imput everyone!

I started taking Lipitor in April 2009 and my Dr prescribed 10 mg per day. As I usually have negative reactions to medications I compromised & agreed to take it every other day. I am a healthy 56 year old woman and the only medication I take is hormone replacement therapy. I am also in pretty good shape physically. At the end of July I herniated two disc's in my lower back, the L6 & L7, after a day of normal yard work. I could not move for two days and experienced the worst pain of my life. At the time I did not make any connection between Lipitor and this event. The recovery was slow and painful. In Sept I also began to experience sharp pains in my thigh. I read the side effects again regarding Lipitor and determined that this drug is most likely the cause. I decided to stop taking the drug and after three to four weeks the thigh muscle pain disappeared and my back pain significant decreased. Just to make sure I was not imaging the whole thing I took Lipitor twice in the past week and my back pain symptoms returned and I experienced the muscle pain in my thigh again. I was so bad it woke me up. After reading more about Lipitor and the effect it is having on my quality of life I am done with this drug. Although it did reduce my cholesterol I will find another way to control the LDL's & HDL's.
