I am a 51 year old male who has taken a 10 mg dose of Lipitor for years. I thought it was a miracle drug as I had no side effects. I am a retired police officer and Army Reserve Officer and have maintained good physical shape. I retired a year ago. About the same time, my doctor raised my dosage to 20 mg. During the last year, I have had physical problems pop up. They include not being able to make it through the night without having to get up and go pee. I realized that it is because of reduced flow and I do not fully purge when I do go. I went to my doctor and had my prostrate checked; it's OK. He said it was just getting old. I thought I have been getting arthritis. When ever I sit for very long, I get joint/muscle pain, I have been having pain in my hands and feet and need to stretch when first getting up in the morning. The worst is my knee. It was surgically repaired 9 years ago. The last year it started hurting bad enough that I must sleep with a pillow between my knees and still wake up from pain at night.
Eight months ago I moved. My mail order prescription (90 day supply) was recently running out of the 20mg Lipitor, but I found an old bottle of the 10mg dose and started taking it until I identified a new doctor and got a new prescription. My symptoms began to disipate That lead me to start thinking about whether lipitor had any side effects. I never thought of it until this morning. I googled Lipitor side effects and found this site and started reading about people with similar issues. I had no significant problems with the 10mg dose and may just reduce again to that level. I'm making an appointment today with my new doctor to talk about it.

Mother in law...70 years old. On Statins for quite a few years...Slowly noticed memory loss. Can't find the right words or sometimes even what something is...like, you know the "thing" they put the mail in (mailbox).
In assisted living now since June. Can't even cook, too dangerous.
She'll be penniliess in April '08.
Thanks statins and imcompetent Drs!.
I love how the Drs. continue to deny that these drugs have any role in memory loss, or other dangerous side effects at all!
She doesn't remember eating so has gained 12 pounds since May. BUT that isn't a hazard....oh the statins are the lesser of the 2 evils according to the Dr.
Maybe the Dr. would like to take her home for the holidays and watch her sit, quiet as she can't contribute to conversations, remember what we talked about 15 minutes earlier, etc.
WHY ISN'T there a class action on these damaging, dangerous drugs yet?
We will be strapped with her care for many years as she is otherwise healthy.
We need to take back the FDA from the special interest (BIG PHARMA) lobbyists and make medicines about curing people again...not about bottom lines and big profits...
HOW DO WE DO THIS??
I guess we all need to bombard our elected officials with letters and petitions..
Good luck to all here...I feel for you and pray your side effects don't get as bad as hers did.

The first of the nightmare was the cramps, aches and pains in my legs. eventually it spread to almost all over my body. I felt like could not wlk across the drive way without struggling. I am 51 years old and, without exageration, I felt like I was 81. It came on so slowly that I did not relate it to the Lipitor at first. A client of mine was the one to happen to mention one of his family member's experience to Lipitor and that's what clued me in. I stopped it that day. I have listed symtpoms below that I am suffering from. At least we can commisurate and e-mail with others who understand and know we are not making this up.
1.) extreme muscle/joint aches and pains
2.) extreme fatigue (falling asleep almost anywhere) loss of energy
3.) weight gain and bloating, especially in stomach area without any increase in food intake.
4.) urinary incontinance
5.) sweling in left leg and ankle
6.) swelling and pain feet
7.) depression
8.) memory loss
9.) loss of mental accuity
10.) increased oiliness of skin and hair
11.) loss of equilibrium
12.) diarrhea
13.) eyesight deteriorated rapidly
14.) irritability
15.) itching ended pretty soon after I stopped taking the Lipitor.
Most of these symptom come and go but someof them seem like they are here to stay. Is there a class action law suit that might prevent this happening to more innocent, unsuspecting people? Is there a list of things people can do to help the symtpoms? Another friend in need - Rebecca

I am totally shocked at what I have learned about Lipitor. My physician prescribed 10mg for me over 4 years ago. No major problems until recently. Severe neck/shoulder pain for about 3 months. Dr said it was a pulled muscle. Gave me Skelaxin. No help. Went to Chiropractor--yanked, cracked, beat, etc--no help. In the past 2 weeks or so I have developed pain in my hips, back and legs. Blamed it on being 52 years old. As I read some of the experiences on here I could relate to each one. I also have gained about 30 pounds in the past 4 years, short term memory is terrible. NO ENERGY> 3 years ago-Dr started me on Wellbutrin for depression, then added Zoloft. I am to the point now I want to get off of all this and see how I could really feel. Not sure about withdrawals. Any comments on stopping the meds?

I have been taking Lipitor for 3 years; I started having problems with my finger and thumb on my left hand. I passed it off as arthritis. Not being aware of the side effects of Lipitor. Then I started having numbness in my finger tips. My Dr said it could be a pinched nerve in my neck. However, tests are expensive with no insurance, so I bypassed the MRI. In the last 6 months I have been getting weaker in my legs, I can hardly walk a block without my legs starting to shake. Yesterday I was at work and went to walk down a flight of stairs and almost fell. I had to do a lot of walking and my knees started giving out on me. I was so embarrassed. I had to stop and rest, and let the rest go on. My husband saw a Lipitor commercial and heard the side effects one being Muscle weakness. I have stopped Lipitor affective today. I will be sending my Dr an e-mail immediately after this to let her know I am discontinuing Lipitor. I am afraid of what I have done to meself. I just hope I can get my health back.

46 year old male noticed aches in legs and loss of stamina. I read that coQ10 in depleted when taking this drug. Started taking a supplement 1x a day and noticed a great improvement in my energy level. The aches are still there and I also get some swelling in one or both legs. After many tests, there is no explanation. Anyone who has experienced leg swelling should e mail me

I'm a 46 year old male. I started 10 years ago with Lipitor 5mg, after one year increased to 10mg, insurance company made me switch to Zocor 10mg. After switching with another ins company had to go back to Lipitor 10mg, had to switch again to Zocor 20mg, then my doctor took it to 40mg along with 1,000mg of niacin. Switch again to Lipitor and back to Zocor, all this transpired within a 10 year period. I have always been extremely active and very muscular. One day I noticed twitching in the upper part of both arms. When I visited my doctor, his first words where stop the Lipitor now. Within the next three months I had extreme body tremors, full body muscle cramping, extreme night sweating (would soak the sheets) and had a vibrating (it was like a humming sensation) sensation in my whole body 24/7. It's been two years now since I stopped taking this poison and I now suffer with a great deal of muscle loss in my hands, forearm, upper shoulders, butt area and feet. I have difficulties with balance, holding my bladder when I feel the urge to urinate, severe pain, difficulty lifting my arms to my head and difficulty with my speech. The sweating and vibrating feeling has gone now however my quality of life is not anything to talk about. If I new then what I know now about this statin drug I would have never takin it. If any one knows of any ways too reverse these side effects, please e-mail me at ******

Concerning the adverse side effects of Lipitor. I know many have had their lives devastated by muscle damage and memory impairment. One can't help but ask why. Why is this happening to so many people, yet Lipitor remains on the market.
Unfortunatley, I have the answer to that question. For the thousands of people reading this posting, lets all say it together now. IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY! Good, lets say it one more time. IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY! Congratulations. You have graduated. Your deploma will be sent in the mail.

OH man. I am so glad I found this site.
I STARTED TAKING LIPITOR A YEAR AGO. ABOUT 10 WEEKS AGO I WOKE UP WITH A BACK PAIN SO BAD I COULDN'T WALK, MY RIGHT SIDE HURT FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY RIBS ALL THE WAY DOWN TO MY LEG. i FIRST WENT TO A CHIROPRCATIC DR. HE ADJUSTED MY BACK BUT SIDE & HIP STILL HURT. SO I WENT TO MY DR WHO SAID IT'S NOT THE LIPITOR. I HAD A SONAGRAM & A CT SCAN NOTHING SHOWED. I QUIT THE LIPATOR 3 DAYS AGO. THE CHIROPRACTIC DR HAS PUT ME ON A LIVER & GALBLADDER FLUSH. I WONDER IF ANYONE ELSE HAS THE HIP,SIDE & BACK PAIN. I WONDER IF I'LL EVER BE ABLE TO WALK OR STAND WITHOUT PAIN. IT HURTS SO BAD TO LAY DOWN FOR MORE THAN A FEW HOURS, TURNING IN BED IS A REAL JOB. I'D LIKE TO HEAR FROM YOU. i'M 51 GRANDMOTHER OF 13.

I am 36 years old and have been on Lipitor 40 for about 5 years. Over time, I have noticed it very difficult to concentrate and focus. I am always dragging, and my shoulders, neck and legs always ache. I guess I chalked most of it up to getting old. But recently, I started to get burining, shooting pains in my left elbow area (doctor says tennis elbow). After doing a little research - I was shocked to find that almost every symptom that I have- can be related back to Lipitor. I stopped taking it for a few weeks, and I started to feel a little better. I stopped because I couldn't afford it. Once I was able to refill my prescription- the same issues started again. I think that I am going to stop it for good, and document changes in my body. Hopefully for the better
