62 year old female, taking Lisinopril for over a year. I was at lost for my symptoms until I read this site, pain in arm, don`t sleep, itching all over, Head ache, pressure on back of head Dizzy, trouble walking, depression, loose of memory etc.( history of a benign brain tumor about 10 years ago) Pressure was so bad I made a appointment with my neurosurg) Talked to a Pharm. He suggested to not take it one night and see. I did and the pressure went away.I called the Cardiologist. His nurse really told me off and that I was not having any side effect, something was going on, but not Lisinopril as I had taken it for so long. She was just plain rude! She would not call anything else in for me either. I am titrating it and and looking for a new doctor!!

46 year old male...In advance of thyroid surgery my BP went up to 155/100 with spike a bit higher. Lisinopril at first had no effect, so we switched to Toprol. The Toprol gave me really bad side effects so we switched to HCTZ and Lisinopril. Finally dealing with the emotional issues attached to surgery and some other issues that I hadn't faced up to for years (along with dropping 25 lbs) has my BP under control. In fact, it was too low on my last appointment so we halved the Lisionpril dosage to 10mgs (with 25mgs HCTZ). I hope to be off of this drug by the end of the summer...the only side effect I dealt with was a bit of a cough for a couple of weeks, but it went away with time. Just hang in there and stay positive...focusing on this stuff only makes it worse

I am a 60yo white male. Started Lisinopril 5mg on 3/15 and within a couple of days experienced light headedness every afternoon. After 10 days medication was decreased to 2.5mg OD. Light headedness went away but I developed a dry cough that usually came on at night (in bed). Was not too much of a problem but then the cough would develop at different times of the day. I have decided that yesterday's dose would be the last. I will schedule an appointment with my doctor. Help...How long will it be for the dry cough to disappear? Throughout the whole time my B/P was right on!

Wow, I am so surprised to discover that Lisinopril is the culprit diminishing my sex drive. I have been going through therapy (after a messy divorce) the past 17 months and at the same time my doctor has been increasing my dosage of Lisinopril from 5 mg/day to 80 mg/day to combat my HBP. Just recently I underwent a vasectomy and have began to have a sexual relationship with a lady friend and I have been having trouble with my sex drive, it is almost non-existent after one sexual cycle. Suffice it to say that I have been very frustrated and have been wondering if the curtailment was due to my BP med or the vasectomy, now I see that once again I am part of the 1% that has this lack of sex drive issue. I will be scheduling a doctor's appointment this morning.

Thanks to all for being open!

I have been taking Lisinopril for a year, I am a otherwise healthy 39 year old female and now feel tired all the time, I often wake up in a panic in the middle of the night, my hair has been thinning and now my throat has started to feel strange, I have decided to discontinue taking this medication and schedule an appointment with my physician to discuss these side effects

I am 33 years old with borderline HBP, but otherwise healthy. I have been on lisinopril for about 2 years. I thought it was a miracle drug as well lowering my BP (110-120/75-80) with no side effects. The pill's appearance changed about 6 or 7 months ago and now is the faint yellow pill that says Watson 408 on them. They did not used to say that, and they used to be a different color. I immediately noticed side effects. For the past 9 months I have gotten stress tests, wore an event monitor for a month, corotid artery scan, been to the ER about 5 times, had bloodwork done etc...
My symptoms have been:
1. When at work the room looks darker, I am a programmer and it's like someone turned down the dimmer switch and I strain to see the screen
2. I have been suffering palpitations and the sharp stabbing pains on my left side and right side of my chest
3. Most recently I have developed headaches and just this week I went to the ER b/c I got dizzy and disoriented at work. The ER said it was a spell of Vertigo.

I never even considered that it could be the lisinopril, I guess that seems pretty silly but I thought that if that was it my doc would have told me. Instead they tried to put me on Lexapro and Zoloft and even gave me some Xanax. Tomorrow I have another doc appointment and will suggest to her (yeah she is pretty hot - looks like Angelina Jolie) that it is the lisinopril. I am going to insist that I get off of it. I will post what happens. Thanks to all of you for the valuable information.
God Bless.

I knew something was wrong, and I made an appointment with my cardiologist. I have a new doctor, who switched my BP med from propanolol to lisonipril. Im not one to do this usually, but i am overweight and my ankle swells, so the dyharetic idea sounded good. I also have mitral valve prolapse. Beta blockers controlled this extremely well, but now I feel like I need a valve replacement. I came on line to search the relationship between MVP and Lisinopril and WALA! I will kep my cardiologist appointment, but I am going to continue being my own doctor. Symptoms dont lie.
Oh, by the way my wife was just diagnosed with a thyroid problem, and yes you guessed it.....she's on lisinopril.

I have had a loss of body in my hair since I've been on this drug. I haven't noticed a significant hair loss (i.e. clumps falling out or lots of hairs on the sink after I blow dry) It's been three months since I began taking it. I can't say that I'm happy about this, and I'm concerned that others are experiencing the same sorts of symptoms not listed on any information I've been given. I'm in my early 50's as others have noted in their postings. My sister suggested that I do a search for this symptom, and I'm glad she did. I have an appointment with my doctor next month, but I think I'll call him on Monday morning and ask him to consider alternatives. Perhaps this generic isn't the best for me.

I took Lisinopril for over 9 months. In that time I lost a lot of weight, vomited up to 15 times a day, had a persistent dry cough and headache. My GP had no answers for me, sent me to specialists, etc. None of the medical professionals at that point could tell me what the cause was. ( I went from 200 pounds to 145 pounds, due to not being able to keep food or beverages down.) My teeth are permanently etched from stomach acid. I developed all sorts of other problems due to improper nourishment. During this time I had a total knee replacement.. thank goodness I had no complications due to the lack of being able to keep food down.
My husband did an internet search on my blood pressure med ( lisinopril) and found this was a common side effect. I immediately made an appointment with my GP, who was away and another Doctor was standing in for him. She listened to my symptoms and said it was the lisinopril and to stop taking it immediately and prescribed something else. Within a week the cough and projectile vomiting was completely gone!
What is the matter with the medical team? Why didn't one of them clue into this?
Can't this droop be taken off the market or come with a warning on the pharmacy label?

Thank goodness I typed in "Dry cough "and "gag." I found this site and now I know WHY I can't seem to get over this "cold."

I've been on lisinopril for about 3.5 weeks and I was beginning to think I had suddenly developed allergies. I get this terrible tickle and I try to fight it, because I know once I start coughing, it will take a while to settle down again. My eyes water, my head throbs, and I reach a point of nearly gagging. In addition, I get to deal with the added pleasures of menopausal stress incontinence. I'm MISERABLE!

I've been needing to schedule an MRA for another non-related issue, and I have been putting it off due to concerns about being in the MRI machine and not being able to catch my breath.

Thanks to all of your input here, I'm calling my doctor tomorrow. Enough is enough!

I came across this site purely by entering "swollen red foot and kidney pain" into my search engine, imagine my shock when up came a site listing kidney pain and lisinopril!! I have been taking lisinopril for about 7 months now and as I had no adverse side effects in the first week carried on popping my "little lifesaver" no questions asked. Over the last 3 months I have experienced kidney pain to the extent that I was beginning to think I would pass a kidney stone! dry persistent cough, sleeplessness which means I am up at all hours throughout the night and catnapping (when I can) during the day, nausea ,stomach pain and headache!! The swollen foot I don't think I can attribute to the lisinopril....but who knows? I appreciate that in medicine we use various "poisons" as cures and remedies for illness, but when I read of the side effects that so many people are experiencing and am able to see a definite link to the ones I am experiencing then I start to wonder ....the good thing is that this drug and I take 10mg daily has reduced my B.P to a rather good level.....but I have decided to stop taking it for a few days to see whether my symptoms stop and have made an appointment to discuss this treatment with my G.P as a matter of urgency!! Thanks...Jill xx Oh almost forgot to add the incessant itching as well!!

I have been taking Lisinopril since May. My primary care doctor told me that I would have a dry cough associated with it. I get outside working and cough til I gag. I have no energy, I only sleep about 4 hours a day. I have erectile disfunction.
I'm glad I found this website.
I will make an appointment to see my primary care doc to see about a different drug.

I was on Lisinopril for 4 months. I had some coughing, the gag reflex, and a general feeling of malaise. My depression was bad at times and I imagined myself committing suicide more than once. I also began to grind my teeth at night. I have been off of the poison for 8 days and all side effects have subsided except for the teeth grinding. My teeth and jaws ache all the time. I had never experienced that problem before. I too went to the ER in the middle of the night about 2 months ago because I was sure I was having a heart attack or stroke. I finally made an appointment with a therapist 3 weeks ago to deal with the depression. She told me about Lisinopril side effects and I quit taking it. I owe her my life. I feel re-born. I am so happy to be alive!!!!

I am so glad to see all these postings about Lisinopril! At least I now know that I'm not alone...and maybe I'm not crazy! My hair is falling out by handfuls every time I shampoo it. I thought it was my scalp psoriasis causing it, but now I know what it is! I even wonder now if the Lisinopril has brought on the scalp psoriasis! The weakness in my neck is driving me crazy along with just a general feeling of all-over muscle weakness. Feels like I can't hold my head up all the time! I can't get enough sleep, and feel tired all of the time. My vision is blurry, and I do have some tingling in my arms and fingers. My concentration is shot, so is my memory! I'm quitting this stuff and going to try the diet/exercise routine and see if that does the trick. Never had high blood pressure until I gained this extra 30 lbs. so maybe losing it will put me back where I need to be. Oh! did I mention that just the thought of sex is more than I can take, let alone trying it!

It's 3:00 in the morning and I am awake again convinced I must have heart failure. I've been on Lisinopril for several months and recently have experienced swelling of the tongue, throat, and face. I also have hair loss, shortness of breath, fatigue, and tingling in my arms. Until I found this site I had no clue as to the cause of these symptoms. Actually, afraid to go to the doctor for fear that I had some potentially fatal heart condition or worse. Now, however, I'm making an appointment tomorrow right after throwing those pills into the trash. I think I can sleep now. Thanks for input.

I was switched to lisinopril because of crappy insurance (couldn't afford what's supposed to be the good stuff). Been taking it for high BP. I'm convinced I've never really had high BP but my previous doc thought it was indicated. My previous BP med (Atacand) wasn't great but I hung tough with it. Since switching to lisinopril, I have actually thought I was dying! Burning/weak muscles, coughing when I lay down, poor sleep ability, cramps that seem to travel from one area to another in my body, memory problems, exhaustion, and on and on. All these things just sneaked up on me slowly until I finally realized that it had to be this stuff! This stuff that is supposed to be beneficial! Tuesday, July 10, I said "ENOUGH." I stopped taking it. Got an appointment with my doc on Friday. Intend to stay off this and I'm going to try to get off cholesterol med too. I think we've all been duped into thinking we need this stuff when we really don't. I'm only 52, I'm not supposed to feel like I'm dying yet. I've been monitoring my BP since yesterday when I quit taking the lisinopril and it hasn't spiked up or anything else.....yet. I have already begun to feel better. Good luck to ya'll. Sounds like we all need it.

I am 65 years old and went on 10 mg for BP about 5 weeks ago. Never having taken anything stronger than a asperin in my whole life I thought I was becoming a hypochondriac.
Besides the somewhat constant coughing which I can tolerate. I am constantly fatiqued. Getting up suddenly makes me very light headed and dizzy. Even raking and bagging leafs was a chore. My wife comments to every one that I exhibit about 25% of my former energy level. I experienced chest pain and a heaviness in my chest the second week on Lisniopril.
I am not a "doctor" friendly person. I hate hospitals and doctors but I have scheduled a appointment with him next week instead of a three month recheck to discuss these symptoms. If it was not for this web site I would have figured this was all in my "head"

I wanted to find out if others had the same EXTREME fatigue when taking Lisinopril. I was relieved to find that my tireness had more to do with Lisinopril than my overall health. I've noticed that when I stop taking Lisinopril my energy level returns to a high rate and I am happier and more agreeable (my normal self). With Lisinopril, I was almost like in a depression state. I have an appointment with my PCP in a week to discuss the alternatives. Thanks to everyone who has shared their story to keep us all healthy and happy.

I was put on Lisinopril about one month ago as an addition to my Norvasc 5mg. Lisinopril10. Very soon after I developed a severe cough. As many people have said, sometimes causing violent dry coughing for minutes at a time then causing post nasal drip and more coughing. I stopped the Lisinopril last Saturday, 10/14 and had an appointment with my doctor 10/18. I couldn't wait...10/16 I went to my doctor and she said it was probably that Lisinopril. Now I am taking Avapros...no more Norvasc or Lisinopril.

After reading the postings, my husband and I realized that I had had some of the other symptoms we read about, such as dizziness and nausea, being unusually tired.. Unreal..I don't understand why doctors even give this drug to anyone, knowing the terrible side effects it 'most likely' would have. I still have the violent cough. I work in a classroom and when the coughing starts, it is very disruptive. I need to run for a drink, a tissue, a drop. It really only stops on its own.

My doctor told me not to take anything over the counter and just let it run its course. I dread weeks of this coughing. I sleep in a recliner and still don't get much sleep.

I wish everyone the best....DON'T TAKE LISINOPRIL! PLEASE..there are so many other BP meds out there.

I started taking Lisinopril several months ago and I'm having side effects that have been mentioned by others on this site. One that no one has mentioned is ITCHING. I don't have a rash, but my arms, chest, back, neck and face itch constantly.

Any one else experiencing this? I took myself off the drug and have an upcoming dr's appointment to discuss other drug choices.

Has anyone else experienced a pins & needles feeling in their hands and feet? I have been on 20MG daily for about 1 1/2 weeks now and the past few days my feet and hands are bugging the living heck outta me, they feel like they are buzzing from time to time. I am also dealing with "the cough"

I have an appointment later this week with my cardiologist and would like to get off this med! I am currently taking 10 MG twice a day, and my motivation is missing and I feel like the world is passing me by.

I am so glad to hear I am not the only one in this boat with this drug.

Thanks for listening and understanding.

I'm 31 and recently diagnosed with hypertension - back in February. Lisinopril was prescribed at 2.5mg.

After the first month this had little to no affect. My BP was still in the 150s over 111s. Dose was doubled to 5mg.

Started getting pains in my knees. Felt like I could not stretch my legs enough. Also starting feeling dizzy, anxious, exhusted and had some stomach issues. Diet became an issue because I was either ravanously hungry or could not face food at all.

On Monday I was at the hospital for more checks to try and find the cause of my hypertension. Blood tests, urine tests, cholestoral checks, eye tests, ECG - all repoted very healthy.

However, even on 5mg of Lisinopril my BP was well in to the late 140's / 110's. I'm due to have more tests in a month but my Lisinopril dose has been doubled again, this time to 10mg.

I'm having real trouble concentating, very bad leg pains, stomach has got much worse and I am totally exhusted. The only thing that has subsided in recent weeks is the anxiaty but I think this is due to the fact that I have started smoking again - after not smoking for 8 months.

I'm very glad this site is first on the search engine (can I name it?, the one that begins with G!). I thought I was maybe suffering from a prolonged mild flu.

I have an appointment tomorrow and will discuss these side affects. If anyone is interested I will post the response.

Thanks for sharing this information. It is very helpful

how stupid can I Be, I started taking lisinopril about 4 months ago, moved to a different state and my new doctor did not like giving lisinopril. He prescribed Micardis. Well after two weeks on that stuff, I was tired weak, and disorented. Went to another doctor, she put me back on lisinopril with HCTZ. I had wondered why I had a shight nagging cough, nothing bad, just nagging. Now with the HCTZ my lower back is killing me. I have a appointment today, I am wondering if there is anyway of lowering my BP without this garbage.

In April of 2000 I was diagnosed as haveing Erectile Dysfunction. I had had been taking Lisinopril prior to this diagnoses for Hypertension. I did not know at the time that Lisinopril could cause impotence. It does and my problem with Erectile Dysfunction has gotten worse. Also the darn cough really messes you up. I have made an appointment with my Dr. to discuss this and if there might be some alternatives. I have not had any Doctor discuss the side effects with me at all until I started going to my current VA Doctor in Tacoma, Washington.

I was glad to find this website! I have been on Lisinopril about a year and didn't notice any side effects until around December of 2005 - I developed a really bad cold and cough. Now I can't get rid of that cough. I kept thinking it was just from that cold in December, but that doesn't sound right. I've also had a sore throat but no fever. My cough is so bad I can't sleep at night and I have started having heartburn too.

I just now am realizing that maybe Lisinopril if the reason for these problems.

I am making an appointment with my doctor this week and asking to be put on something else rather than Lisinopril.

It's amazing! I've experienced the majority of same effects as everyone else - the listlessness (when I first starting taking Lisinopril about 5 months ago it totally knocked me out like a sleeping pill!), the dry coughing, the lack of sex drive, now I'm getting headaches, and whereas initially my pressure was coming down, now it's doing nothing!!!! Before going on Lisinopril, my average pressure was 120-130/100-105. My doctor initially started me on 10mg then increased to 20mg since my pressure seemed to level around 130/95. The extra 10mg didn't really drop it much - only to about 130/90. But now my systolic number keeps increasing (staying around 140) whereas the problem had always been my bottom diastolic number. Now its staying around 140/110-115!!!! This is ridiculous.

Since my doctor and I have been of different opinions lately, I've made an appointment with a different doctor and hope to have better success.

I'm glad to have run across this site because now I know its not just me!

Thank you.

Sorry to hear so many have had a bad experience with Lisiniprol. I've been on it for three months and haven't had any of the bad experiences with it.
For those of you with the cronic cough and the doctor dismisses it...you need to find a new doctor. When my doctor prescribed this medicine, she was very clear with me that if I started to develop a dry cough, such as that described by others on here, to contact her right away and we'd look at other medications. She flat out told me that IF I did get those coughing spells that they will not go away and may only get worse while on the medication. When I went back in for a follow up appointment, she again asked if I had been having any coughing spells, which I hadn't, and if I did to remember to call her. So for those whose doctor won't listen to them, my advice is to find another doctor who will.

I've been on lisinopril and Hchlorothyazide for about a month and a half. I started with 5mg of lisinopril and about 2 weeks ago my doctor upped it to 10mgs. Since she upped it I have been experiencing rapid heart rate and shortness of breath. I asked the doctor about this and she did not know of this as a side effect, but after reading this board, it is obvious to me that it is. I have an appointment to talk to her. Hopefully we can change to something else.

I started taking Lisinopril only a week ago. After four days I had to stop. I have high BP and asthma. I was originally given a diuretic, but my BP only came sdown slightly, so my doctor prescribed 5mg of Lisinopril a day. The first day I had blurred vision and a slight cough. By the fourth day I was hacking so badly I nearly dialed 911. It was like one of my bad asthma attacks only 10,000 times worse. The next day I didn't take the Lisionpril. I called my doc and she told me to just stick with the diuretic until my next appointment in two weeks. It's now been two days since I've taken any Lisinopril and I still can't stop coughing. Be careful and ask questions before taking this medication.

I switched from Diovan to lisinopril 3 weeks ago after 3 yrs of successful use of Diovan with no problems. This was because a new insurer would not cover most of the cost of the Diovan. Now I am having increasing anxiety and mild depression, along with sleep disturbance. I have already made an appointment to check out SSRI treatment, which I have never required before (for the anxiety and depression), but now I am thinking that the lisinopril may be the culprit. According to the pharm. co., anxiety is a "rare" side effect. Would love to get a look at their clinical trial results!

I have been taking Lisinopril since February at various levels. At first I was prescribed 20 mg's, which did make me feel dizzy and weak, but did lower my bp. After informing my doctor of my side effects, and after review of my good bp readings, he lowered the dosage to 5 mg's. I still did not feel altogether good and then had a high reading at a dental office (150/100) where they almost refused to clean my teeth because of my high bp. It came down slightly while at the dental appt, and then they agreed to clean my teeth as long as I schedule an appointment to see my doctor. So I scheduled another appt and my doctor increased my medication from 5 to 10 mg's. I have been feeling very weak and fatiqued almost regularly at work, with a definite loss of concentration, and even sometimes at home around dinner time, but the side effects seems to clear up closer to bed time and they never appear in the morning, making me almost certain the Lisinopril is causing these side effects since I take it in the morning. I felt dizzy & weak yesterday, so I cut my dosage in half today and had another dizzy & weak spell around dinnertime (ironically I felt fine earlier in the day). I plan to stop taking this crap altogether tomorrow, and will definately post again after a week or so (while monitoring my bp regularly in hopes that I can control it with more effort in my diet & exercise).

I've had Fibromyalgia for a long time. The #1 thing, is to have a positive attitude. Get info. about this disease. Get moving. Start out slowly. Do what you are able to do, nothing more and nothing less. I know its hard to keep moving. But if u dont, ur stuck with no life. I've been down this road too. Get some physical therapy. I have found, for me, that pool therapy is the best. I dont have as much gravity to deal with in a swimming pool. The water seems to hold u up. Get involved in som...

I was given the fantastic news that my body doesn't like itself anymore. I don't know when it had a falling out, but all I can say is the course of action to remedy this disease is CRAZY. Taking meds that have more side effects and the restrictions on my daily life, because of the meds, no driving, no salt, no sugar, and little fat in my diet, very little sun. Bathing in skin moisturizer, moodiness, mental confusion, can't work, but expected to continue cooking for family, and cleaning. Which I guess ...

My partner insists that he's not drunk & he's just very tired. He has slured speech, incoherent, unsteady on his feet & drops off to sleep in the blink of an eye. Could it be something other that drink related? or is he just pretending to himself he's ok?
