Wow! Let me tell you my story: I was first diagnosed with HBP (170/140) during a high school sports physical in the beginning of 8th grade (I was about 14 years old). I was in top shape and a very healthy eater. I had probably (from what I remember) every test done to see what was the cause of this hypertension - and the only thing found was that my kidney's produce too much rennin (the hormone that increases BP). I was then put on Lisinopril 10mg. Everything continued well for about 6 years - I also stayed in shape and ate healthy. However, throughout those 6 years, I did notice my curly hair turning straight and my incredibly (can't do nothing with) thick hair started to thin and become style able. Now...I do know this is my fault, but in the past 2 years my healthy eating habits have slipped, I've gained weight and started smoking - plus have a sit down, don't move kind of job. However, about 1 year ago, I had a slight spike in my pressure and my doctor added a diuretic (HCTZ 12.5mg) to my lisinopril. Ok, that brought the pressure down and all seemed well. Then..... In December 2008, not long ago, I started not feeling well. Thinking I was sick, I went to the doctor's to find my blood pressure to be 190/140. Immediately, my does was increased to 30-12.5mg. That brought a quick drop in my BP down to 110/66 - I was so darn dizzy I could barely function. I was also but on short-term disability because all this caused me to be off work for so long. Unfortunately, when my dose was adjusted to 20-12.5mg and the dizziness stopped I went back to work. Now, I can't go back on S.T.D. for many, many weeks. And....... The past month has been complete HELL!! My hands (mainly fingers) and toes are almost always cold, I've been dieting for over a month and am struggling to lose weight, my hands and feet go numb more often than usual - I never used to find myself waking up in the middle of the night because of pins/needles feeling, my hair is thinner than ever and stick straight - I'm afraid I'm not going to have any left, I have UNBEARABLE headaches (sometimes all I want to do is sleep and sometimes, like tonight -it's 4:12am- I can't sleep), I have acne like a teenager - mind you, I never had more than 1 to 2 pimples at a time growing up, and that was rare (I was lucky)... Thank god for FMLA or I would have lost my job since I've spent so much time home since I thought all was good and went back to work. Only wish I could make a dollar again. Now to top it off...I was referred to a nephrologist (kidney specialist) who after seeing me only once for about 30min and reviewing blood work from the end of January (I had a high calcium level as well as some others that deal with the kidneys) wants to take away the diuretic (HCTZ) part of my medication (hopefully to reduce the calcium level) BUT DOUBLE MY MG OF LISINOPRIL. HE WANTS ME TO TAKE 20MG TWO TIMES A DAY. I was starting to think all these new symptoms that came on so quick were a result from the increase of lisinopril - now I think I'm sure. I'm not changing my medications until I can talk this over with my PCP - I'm going to ask we try a medication change. Does anyone have any suggestions? Or any suggestions why a 20-year-old has blood pressure as high as 190/140 with no family history of HBP or really any health problems? Any suggestions why the kidneys are producing too much rennin? Any meds that drop the pressure and we don't get headaches - I can live with cold limbs and numbness - it's the headaches that are rendering this 24-year-old helpless :(

burning in stomach, heartburn. I have been on Lisinopril, 10 mg. for 5 days. About two hours after taking my first dose I experienced a burning stomach and heartburn. I am also taking Tenoromin, 100 mg. and HCTZ, 25 mg. I take the Lisinopril with food and about 2 hours later the symptoms begin. They come and go. A few hours before I am to take the Lisinopril (I take it once a day), the symptoms are not as bad. Has anyone else had this side effect?
Has anyone else had this experience? I am wondering if Atacand might be a better choice.

I found this site by searching for depression and any of the medications I take: synthroid, metformin, glimepiride (amaryl), and lisinopril-hctz. And here's the culprit - lisinopril! I've been taking it for only a couple of months now but it feels like my world is closing in on my and I'm bouncing off the walls in my mind. I'm considering retiring having hit 62 and I thought it would be a happy time but instead I feel locked in a prison, with walls of debt, depression, loneliness, hopelessness, etc. closing in on me. I'm even very close to losing a boyfriend because I've become so clingy and emotionally needy.
I must say that I did stop taking an anti-depressant around the same time that I started with the lisinopril. However, the anti-depressant (Lexapro) was originally prescribed to combat anger and not depression. So I cannot say for sure that Lisinopril is the culprit here. But having read everyone's stories, it is very clear.
Thank you all for telling your experiences with this drug. God bless you all.

I am a 34 y/o male who started taking 10mg/day of lisinopril on May 15th. My blood pressure at the time was 140/118, pretty high I guess! I was feeling it too in the form of headaches. The doc wrote the script for me and I filled it that night. I should also mention that this is not the first time I have taken Lisinopril. I stopped taking it back in March because the script ran out. I don't seem to recall any kind of side-effects the first time, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I also take Levoxyl for my hypothyroidism, and it is a pretty hefty dose, 225mcg a day.
So, for the first week, I was doing pretty good on it. No coughing, or any of the listed side effects listed for the med. Then, about a week into it, I started having numbness in the right three toes on my right foot. When I say numb, I don't mean I could not feel anything, it was like touching your skin with a t-shirt over it. I could feel it, just kind of topically numb. I had a 'patch' of this numb skin right behind those same three toes and several other areas up the front and back of my right calve. I delt with this for a few days, thinking it was my shoes I was wearing at work. They were pretty worn out on the outer edges. I got new shoes on Monday, June 2nd. I wore them to work on the next day. At the end of the day, my calves felt kind of tired. The next day, they felt kind of tired still. I found this sort of weird. From that point on, my high anxiety really kicked in. I don't want to mention the thoughts I am having about what it could be that is causing this. I forgot to mention that I have not been sleeping well lately either since I started taking the Lisinppril again. I guess overall, I feel exhausted and weak. More so in my legs. To add to it, my lower back hurts like mad. I have two herniated discs and mild arthritis in it from damage from years ago. Also, for the past week, a pain has been developing in my left shoulder blade in my back. It is worse in the morning, and had gradually been getting worse for about a week. Today, it was awful.
I have ready a lot of the messages about the side effects different people are having. My question is, has anyone ever been on the lisinopril, gone off of it for whatever reason, having had no bad side effects, then gone back on it only to start having these bad side effects that you did not have before?
I have stopped taking the lisinopril on the 5th and have a doctor's appointment on the 9th to find out what is going on. I don't feel good at all. Can anyone relate?

I recently upped lisinopril from 10 mg to 20 mg per day. Every evening, I have severe fatigue... so tired I can't do much.
I don't know for sure it is the lisinopril. I am on other meds as well. I don't sleep too well, but haven't for a long time and never had this depth of fatigue.

heart palpatations, shortness of breath upon strenuous exercise. Went to dr. bp was up, of course that's why I am on 21/2 mg of lisinopril. Heart rate and pulse were good, no fluid in lungs. I also have stuffy nose. Dr.said try to stick with it for another week and see how symptoms are. I am scared to death. Active 58 yr. old female pretty healthy except for bp and thyroid (take synthroid). Anyone have similar symptons or suggestions?

II have been taking Lisonpril at 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg doses for the better part of a year. I have gotten over the cough but it does not seem to lower my BP that much and have experienced severe nervous reaction to the drug. !0mg is about all I can tolerate. My Doctor wanted me to keep increasing the dose up to 40 mg if I had to. When I reached 20 mg twice things got worse with no significant decrease in BP. I also began to experience a pain in my fingers as if I had arthritis. I take a dose in the morning and then about mid morning to Noon my ears begin to tighten up, some slight light headedness and I get nervous. Some of these nervous attacks have actually exasperated the BP problem by raising it. The Doctor prescribed some Xanex to take when this happens but do not want to get too hooked on taking it.
I also take Vitamins and Thyroxine(Synthroid) and wonder if there could be some interaction with this.
Has anyone experienced these symptoms especially the nervous reaction and light headiness??

I am sure glad to hear from other people about the side effects of this drug. It did help bring my blood pressure down, also taking furosemide (lasix) and labetalol, synthroid and was diagnosed diabetic and am controlling it with diet mainly. This all started about 5 months ago, when I found out all these things plus I had pneumonia. I've lost about 60 pounds since then, and have been doing pretty well. My doctor stepped my pressure down, not all at once, and only after she upped the lisinpril did I have any negative reactions, and that was what some might call lightheadedness, but someone on here referred to as "not quite right," and that's what I'd call it.
I woke up Tuesday, went to have breakfast, take my meds, went back to bed as always, maybe nap a bit, or listen to music, dozed off when alarm went off, got up, went to get dressed, then felt the not right feeling only worse, think I sat down, found myself on the floor a minute later, wondering why my face was in the carpet. Luckily,I have only a black eye and some carpet burns. I think it was too much meds, went to my dr, who put me in the hospital, ran ekg, fine, had me on a heart monitor that day, next morning , had a cat scan, found out that was normal this am, but the eeg showed "possible" seizure activity, so I'm waiting to hear about another eeg, when I'm walking around, and to see a neurologist. My dr did cut the lisinopril in half, and seems to be helping. I also have the dry cough, but not too bad.
I'll be checking out the side effects of the other drugs whi;le I wait, too.
Just turned 50 last month, NOT the way to celebrate.
Thanks for being here.

I'm glad I found this site. Now I have a clue as to why I have been so tired and depressed. I have only been taking 10mg of lisinopril for two weeks and my bp has been running 138/63 to 120/81. Not too high as far as I was concerned. My doctor scolded me for taking St Johns Wort, but even an increased dosage has not helped this bout of depression. After she scolded me and I read up on it, it appears that her major concern was that it was over the counter and she couldn't get a piece of the pie for prescribing another med. I don't like to take meds and the only rx I've taken in the last 30 yrs has been synthroid for 2 years. I consider myself healthy, have never been overweight and exercise regularly. I actually came here to check about dry hair, since that is my major issue right now. I'll be on the lookout for the other side effects listed on this site. Has anyone else noticed dry dead looking hair?

Started taking Lisinopril approx. 6 years. ago. Shortly afterwards I started a spiral downwards for no apparent reason. Did not connect this med. Shortly after starting it I was put on Synthroid for low thyroid. Started having loss of balance, dizziness, vision problems, muscle and nerve pain. B/P went up instead of going down. Have been to every type of Dr. (Neurologist, Dermatologist, Endocrinologist, Internist) and every nerve & muscle test and blood work came back negative. I have extreme cold in my hands and feet, increased back pain. headaches. This past week I have broken out in a rash on my torso and down both legs. The doctors answers are that I'm suffering from depression. The irony is that when the symptoms first started I questioned if I could be having a reaction to the medication and they flat out said no. After reading some of the comments as of today I am discontinuing the Lisinopril and will searce for something natural. I'm fed up with doctors and really short on cash from all the money spent trying to find an answer.
