I’m taking myself off Lotrel. My BP was only slightly high, but my doctor wanted to be proactive. I’ve been on Lotrel for over six months. My short term memory is terrible. I have tingling in the three middle fingers (left hand), total body weakness and most concerning total body edema. My fit body now has a thin layer of baby fat. Lotrel has to GO!

I was on 5/10 lotrel, a mild dose over 3 months. I took myself off of the drug and learned to relax more, and have a better diet and exercise more. I felt weird where I could not focus on my priorities, and the way the medication made me feel made me think of it more than I wanted to rather than life. I am normally a no headache person. While on the medication, i had horrible headaches where I had to take Excedrin migraine to get over it. My skin after taking it for awhile became dry and itchy. I had dark circles under my eyes, which was new. My knees and feet and hands became ice cold. I think it is because I believe that my blood pressure the way it was, was what my body needed, and maybe there was not enough circulation with the very low 117/60. My normal and feel good blood pressure is about 140/85. I am happy with that and will keep it. Also wild at normal 140/85 my blood sugar is normal. when I took the medication and it dropped to 117/60, my blood glucose rose. My body was releasing glucose because it was saying, hey something is not okay here. I think the drugs are bad, and now I eat organic vegetables, no coffee, no sugar, protein meats, and soy milk, unsweetened almond milk, walnuts, blueberries, whole grains. No white bread, no sugar, no soda, no fried food, no white potatoes, no white rice. My range is now 120/70 to 140/85 when i am rushing around. That is normal. I think medications change your body chemistry. When my skin became itchy and my extremities cold, and my body started shaking and freezing and sweating, it was from the pills. if you want to know you readings, don't go to the doctor. Buy a self test BP machine, Glucose reader, cholesterol meter. My doctors cholesterol count was 100 over another text i had at a free clinic. Maybe they cheat the numbers, who knows, to make you think you are sick and bring you back. take care of yourself, and get away from the fear and panic the doctors put you in. you are way better to see a natural nutritionist if you need help. Break a sweat every day!...that will help.

My husband had been taking lotrel 10/20 for approx. 1 month. He has developed an annoying uncontrollable cough, insomnia, tingling sensation in his fingers, swollen hand, legs, feet and ankles, he has to use crutches in order to get around. He now has an uncontrollable appetite which has caused him to gain weight. The scary ones are the anxious feeling & depression. He is complaining of headaches throughout the day, constantly urinating multiple times during the night. He owns his own business so he uses to be able to work 12-16 hrs a day or longer. But, since he has been on "THE LOTREL" that is longer true, because he is tired most of the time. My husband was on Hazar but the cost was outrageous. After all of this we are willing to pay the cost of the Hazar…

I have been taking lotrel 10/20 for approx. 3 months. I now have an uncontrollable cough, insomnia multiple times during the night, constantly waking to urinate. My doctor has prescribed an inhaler and also increased the meds to 10/40 due to my BP being140/96, he has even placed me on a lasix. I am often tired after working 12-17 hrs, this due to the mandates of the JOB, or is it "THE LOTREL". I was on Hazar but the cost was astronomical even with health coverage. Walmart ($8) but not woth the side effects, I'm requesting the Hazar or just go to the V.A.

I have been taking Lotrel for about 3 years and I have a tingling and burning sensation in my hands and fingers, especially when lying down at night. When this occurs I usually wake up after 2 or 3 hours of sleep. I also experience pain in both shoulders.

The second day after I started to take Lotrel 5/20 my blood pressure lowered considerably (good news) The bad news was about 45 after taking
Lotrel I felt a gradual tightening in my lower neck that traveled up and increased in intesity until it felt like someone was tightening a noose around my neck! I could not inhale ANY air. Nothing. For about 30 seconds I struggled managed to croak air OUT not IN and say "anaphlactic shock 911" to my son. Just before I thought I was going to pass out I was able to get air in and gradually breath. I have never been so frightened in my life.

I HAD BEEN TAKING LOTREL FOR OVER A YEAR AND DIDN'T KNOW THE SIDE AFFECTS. MY LEGS BECAME SO SWOLLEN THAT THEY STARTED TO WEEP WATER WHICH EVEN RAN DOWN MY LEGS INTO MY SHOES. MY DOCTOR NEVER EVEN THOUGHT TO APPLY THIS SIDE AFFECT TO THE LOTREL. I GAINED WEIGHT AND FELT AND LOOKED TERRIBLE. FINALLY, I STOPPED TAKING IT AND RETURNED TO MY NORMAL SELF. WHAT A RELIEF. AS I SAID BEFORE, DOCTORS NEED TO BE AWARE OF THESE SERIOUS SIDE AFFECTS HAPPENING TO THEIR PATIENTS. ZINGY

I have been taking Lotrel 5/10 for a while now. I don't really remember how long because I have symptoms of Alzheimer's. But I also take about 15 others meds. It did lower my blood pressure. A couple of months ago my chest started hurting so bad my wife took me to the emergency room. I spent 3 days in the hospital with numerous tests to find out my heart is fine. I am still exhausted all the time, I have noticed when I stand up for a while my legs and feet turn purple in large spots. If I stand up from being bent over I get dizzy, chest and throat tighten, and I feel like my shoulders and arms get very heavy. I can't really do any activity, even walking out to the mailbox is hard. It finally came to me that it is probably the Lotrel. My wife called my doctor today but he hasn't called back yet. Has anybody quit cold turkey? I don't want any more of this.
Has anybody had these sort of effects and been switched to something with less side effects? Let me know please.

I started taking Lotrel in January and was thrilled because my bp was down from 165/97 to 100/70. Atenolol caused extreme fatigue to the point where I thought I had leukemia or something. I couldn't bend over to pick up something off the floor without feeling like I would pass out, my heart pounded at night, I had a weak pulse. And my bp was 165/97.
My former doc said this was all "anxiety".
My current doc is pleased with the lowered bp.
HOWEVER, I can't lose weight, and I have the "crickets" sound in my ears most of the time. Needless to say, I have leg pain, swollen extremities, and insomnia.
This is a vicious cycle-- lose weight to lower bp, lower bp to have energy to exercise to help lose weight. Between that and the crickets, I'm feeling pretty "anxious".

I have switched from Lotrel to the generic form of Lotrel. I have been taking Lotrel for about 2 years and the generic for about eight months. I have recently experienced a fullness in my left ear, at times hearing loss in only the left ear. It is very bothersome! I also have constipation and stomach pains.

I started taking Lotrel 5/20 about 7 days ago. The dry cough is out of control. I have it all day long and it's worse at night. It even wakes me up. The worse thing its hat it doesn't seem to be doing that good a job for me as far as lowering my bp. I'm not taking that on it's own either. My doctor has me taking Hydrochlorothiazide with it.
But all that aside....
If you can't get rid of the dry cough that some along with the Lotrel..you have to try Buckley's Mixture cough suppressant.
The Pharmacist suggested it. OMG i's the nastiest stuff I've ever tasted but......I swear it works. The dry cough was really bothering me and my chest was starting to really hurt from it. This took the edge off really well. I'm just suggesting this for people who find that the Lotrel works for them but the cough is just too much to handle. Buckley's works.
I on the other hand probably have to try another bp med because Lotrel isn't working for me.

My experience with Lotrel has been just horrible. In September 2000, I was prescribed Lotrel 5-10. For one week I used it and began stroking out. I was in the hospital for 5 hours with a very bad headache. I found out months from an MRI that I had a stroke. I have a headache everyday even when my blood pressure is down. I learned about this website December 12, 2007. I would have posted this sooner.

Starting taking Lotrel 10/20 a week ago, newly prescribed as hypertensive and diabetic. Along with Lotrel I am also taking Glucophage. Since my sugar and bp were all high 178/112, sugar in the 340 range, both these medicines are doing well for me. The only symptom I am feeling from Lotrel is the dry cough, especially before sleeping. I am keeping sugar free hard candies next to me that seems to do the trick. So far that is it...i am reading so much negative....does anyone have anything positive? So far my bp has dropped to 130/88, so I am feeling so much better.

I too have experienced the cough, not enough to be unbearable, but it right there on the cusp of making life hard. Particular issue with the cough first 30 minutes lying down. Solution is only partial, cough syrup.I am fatigued and as a result, I can't get myself to exercise, and it causes me to eat. I gained 10 lbs since going to Lotrel. Sex drive is greatly reduced and ability is darn near taking a holiday as well. I have noticed a significant loss in short term memory as well.

Black spot, cough, sleep disturbance, swelling, stiffness, head fog, lousy memory.

I got a black spot on my ankle like a bruise but it doesn't hurt. The doctor swears he can't see it, but its there.

Occasionally, I have to cough for no good reason.
I am tired all the time, and my wrist swells and feels sore and my fingers feel stiff. I think Lotrel 10/20 aggravates old injuries.

I kept waking up from sleep after 3 - 4 hours even though exhausted.

I've had a horrible dry, hacking cough, both day and night, but especially while I'm laying down trying to sleep. I didn't even think of it being a side effect to Lotrel until I read other users entries. I have only been taking Lotrel for one week, and the cough appeared a day or two after I started taking it. I also have heartburn, which is something I haven't experienced in years! I can only attribute it to the medication since nothing else has changed with my diet.

Ive been taking lotrel for nearly two months now. I have had bad elbow, both of them, aching in the joints and right shoulder stiffness. I cant even take my right arm behind me to reach for anything out of the way without a severe pain in my shoulder. It is like being fractured or coming out of joint.
I explained this to my doctor and he thinks I have pulled ligaments or something. My elbows get so swollen in the morning that I cannot bend my arm or pic something up. Believe me, I am not older or have any physical problems in the past.
I am not sure what to do and I know I need to be on some sort of blood pressure medicine. Ive tried two or three others and they have their own set of side affects. Its sorta like, pic my poison so to speak!!

Just diagnosed with high blood pressure. Dr. gave me Lotrel 5/10 to try it out. About 3 AM I developed a similar effect of roaring/ringing/hollowness in my head. I can't clear it out. It's upsetting me and annoying me. I will call the dr. today after reading the side effects. I am a switchboard operator and I can't have my hearing affected, which I feel this is doing to me.

About four months ago I ran out of my pills and thought I could get by without them but my bp went up to 184/118. While I was off of them the ear noise seem to go away. Now that I'm back on them the noise is back. Could this be a side effect? Also my legs ache very bad.
