This is my 4th day on generic Macrobid (Nitrofurantoin mono 100mg) for a UTI, no problems except typical side effects like drowsiness and urine discoloration. I didn't take it with any food or milk like the label says, but my stomach was fine. I wouldn't have a problem taking this again.

I was prescribed Macrobid for UTI in January of 09 , I was to take the the drug for 14 days , I thought I was doing good, no real bad side effects so i thought I may be able to put this on my can take list. On the fourteenth day I took b=my final pill with a hot dog and went to bed . I woke up in the middle of the night with a few hives on my arm , I took some reactine and went back to bed. Got up the next morning with another hive on my wrist, drove to the drug store and got more reactine and went to work. I called the dr form work to let him know I was getting hives and he told me to get some benadryl but in the mean time take a double reactine. By lunch I had hives all over my legs and he one on my wrist was now wrapppingit self around my wrist completely.. I left work early and took the 50 mg of benadryl and went to bed . By suppertime I had hives on my eyelids so I went to my local emergency room who put me on Prednisone. The following morning I woke up completely covered in hives. I call the doctor again and was informed that I was on the right stuff but if I got worse I was to go back to the emergency room.
the following morning I woke up and knew I had to go to the hospital. I didn't realize that I was talking funny but I told my daughter to get my drugs out of the oven, As my husband was driving me to the emergency room I was talking funny again. I have no Idea what happened to me for the next 24 hours.
I woke up at 5:30 am in a hospital with some guy screaming get a dr to her and then someone came running in the room , took the chart from the nurse and asked something about Epi and I looked at the heart monitor and saw that my resting rate was 158 , yet I felt nothing, I watched them add bags to the i v pump and watched them put the ozygen on my face and fell back a sleep. I woke up a few hours later wondering what was going on , 2 residents came in and told me they had almost lost me twice in the last 24 hours. . Apparently I was hallucinating and fighting with the nurses at emergency and they sent me up by ambulance to the main hospital where I went anaphyactic 2 times . The second time was that morning. I still was completely covered in hives, it hurt to swallow , my tongue was swollen, my heart beat was rapid. I was in hospital for 5 days , they sent me home because C- difficille had broken out on my floor and they didnt want that to kill me.
I went in to anaphylaxis 5 days later once again to the macrobid and was given epi and a steroid. I made 3 more trips to the emergency ward to get epi and steroids over the coming weeks . I started to break out in an allergic rash everytime I ate or drank something and the only thing that helped was reactine and Ranitidine together 2 2imes a day , the rash continued for 3 months and I continued to break out with most meals for a total of 9 months. I cannot take any antibiotics of any kidn right now, because my reaction to macrobid is so severe. It takes 14 days for your body to develop antibodies to this drug and on the 14th day it almost killed me.

My mother (84 years old) went to her doctor for a suspected UTI and was prescribed macrobid which she started taking the day after she saw the doctor. That night she developed a fever, headache, chest pain, and her legs became numb. Fearing anything from flu to kidney failure we immediately rushed her to the hospital. Her condition deteriorated. I asked the doctors there if there was any chance the macrobid was causing the symptoms and they told me there are no side effects from taking macrobid. They ran every test you can imagine on her and there was nothing conclusive. I feared her time had come. But strangely enough, after three weeks in the hospital (during which time she also coughed up blood, saw the lining in her mouth fall off, saw her legs turn blue, suffered severe doziness and was unable to walk) she recovered completely and went home. Two months later she felt that she may have another UTI so she had her macrobid prescription renewed. After taking one pill she fell horribly ill again - same symptoms. I pieced the events together and immediately stopped the macrobib.
I cannot believe the state of our medical system when doctors tell you there are no side effects to worry about and lead us blindly to continue taking a drug that can kill. If I hadn't taken the effort to investigate on my own and continued to put my trust in doctors, my mother may be dead now.
I hope that justice will soon come to the pharma establishment for thier negligence and the suffering that results.

I'm 14 weeks pregnant. Last week I was prescribed macrobid for a UTI. The day after I took the first 2 pills, I started bleeding and have been spotting ever since. I didn't really make the connection. I had a sonogram that showed a healthy baby, thank the Lord! Well, I finished my last dose yesterday morning, and miraculously no spotting today. I don't know. I think it has to be connected. Also, after I started taking the pill, my morning sickness seemed to come back with a vengeance! The 2nd day I slept for nearly 10 hours during the day and then had no trouble sleeping the whole night. I had no desire to eat anything and vomited at least twice everyday. Today...no problems. I feel fine. I'm definitely going to ask my doc to never give me this stuff again!

I have an UTI doctor prescribed Macrobid, I have took 7 doses and feel like crap. I kinda thought it was from the Macrobid but thought it could have been something else like the flu. It started with feeling very tired, sleepy and headaches. Now I am nauseous, sore legs, shoulders and back of neck stiff, my eyes sting, hands and feet have burning sensation, abdominal cramps, bloating, body feels heavy and wore out, loose bowels, hot flashes, and very dry mouth. I hope I have took enough that I can stop the meds. I know you are supposed to take it all but I just cant go on like this. I'm done with it.

I am NOT taking my last dose of macrobid. I took my second to last dose for a UTI not even an hour ago and my heart keeps fluttering. I was laying on my side watching tv and then its like my heart was trying to leap out of my chest. It is sooo scary!! Im also getting terrible neck pains and headaches from this med. Im really worried can this med cause permanent heart damage?? It seems like every medication Im put on some crazy side effect ALWAYS happens.

I was given Macrobid by my OB/GYN to treat a UTI. First dose - Nothing. Second dose - horrible stomach cramps, diarrhea, hot flashes, nausea, felt faint, my stomach felt like it was boiling & my heart was fluttering this was all happening while i was on the toilet!!!!!!!! I called my dr.'s office & the nurse told me to keep taking the med. it was normal. How does this make taking this med. normal. I dont think so.........Now im itching. Is it anything else that can be taken??? Im scared to take it again, but I want this UTI gone.

I've been on Macrobid for about a month, 2 pills per day. All of a sudden my feet and hands itched, tingled, prickled, whatever. The pharmacist said to get off it as side effects could be severe and irreversible. I went to the doctor; he said STOP the Rx. My hands and feet still tingle even being off the RX for two weeks. I take an Allegra D to stop it. It works, but how long will this tingling and itching remain? Does anyone have an answer?

Well guys here goes... Macrobid now makes 3 antibiotics I have been on for a "bladder infection" "uti" "kidney infection" I first got a uti towards the end of December and was put on cipro and did fairly well on it then the infection came back so they put me on levaquin and holy cow was that ever a mistake.... I developed all sorts of adverse reactions to that med. Now I still have the infection and they gave me macrobid...I have been on macrobid before but it has been a while. Unfortunately I took it 10 min ago before I started reading these posts. I will keep you guys informed.. Im hoping it does work for me..Fingers crossed and lots of prayers I guess..

I was prescribed Macrobid for UTI. Got generic capsule from pharmacy. Took one when I got home at 11:30 am, no problems. Took second capsule at 7pm. Went to bed at 9 pm. Awoke at 1 am with classic heart attack symptoms. Heart hurt, heaviness in the chest, arm/shoulder pains, jaw pain. My hands and feet had some tingling. I was only able to take short breaths. No rash, no other symptoms. I knew it was a side effect. I took two aspirin. Got in to see the DR at 9:30 am . Pulse, blood pressure, temperature all normal. He gave me an EKG and took an Xray. All came back normal. No heart problems.
I would not take this medicine ever again.

I recently had been prescribed macrobid for a uti I developed a cough after 4 doses that really hurt. After finishing the course of it I came down with the flu ( cough fever, body aches, etc.) and a rash all over my legs and arms of tiny bumps that itched. 2 weeks later I was given macrobid as a preventative measure by urologist to take for 30 days. I took the 1st dose before I went to bed at about 11:30 pm. the next day by 10am i couldn't finish my morning oatmeal due to sudden loss of appetite and nausea. Then I noticed I was starting to get body aches and my temp was elevating by noon. I took some aleve. By 2:30pm my I had a terrible cough that hurt my chest and my heart felt like it was beating out of my chest. Since I work for my PCP I told him about the symptoms and that I thought it was related to the macrobid and that this was listed as some of the side effects he checked my pulse and it was 133. I went home sick and he called to check on me around 6p.m. by then I was much worse my fever went up and I was coughing to the point that I was short of breath. I had headache dizziness, lightheaded and my whole body ached. and i was so hoarse I could barely talk and had what felt like a bruise on my left hip. He told me if I didn't start to feel better or got worse I should go to the E.R. I woke up at 10pm feeling worse and my heart rate was 120 after waking up from sleep. Went to the E.R. and my pulse was 142. they totally disregarded the fact that I told them this was side effects of the macrobid and they told me that could not be. That night I was diagnosed with bronchitis and uti. I was perfectly fine the day I took this med. I have never had bronchitis before. And my urologist had checked my urine 2 days before and said it was fine. i wasn't even having uti symptoms this was supposed to be preventative med. My PCP says he had his doubts but after looking at the side effects of this med in his MPR, I had almost every one that was listed. I will never take this med again. Antibiotics are supposed to help, not cause infections this should be taken off the market.

I was prescribed Macrobid for a suspected bladder infection. After the first dose, I was so exhausted I could barely move. My kids were with me, and I basically passed out on the couch. I felt drugged, but did not know why and couldn't rationalize that it was from the medication. So, I took my second dose--which was a big mistake. The headache can best be described as a hatchet migraine, followed by vomiting and nausea, swollen throat and dizziness. I stopped the medication two days ago. The headache and most other symptoms disappeared within 24 hours after I stopped. THE WORST MEDICATION EVER. The lab came back that I didn't even have a UTI! But now I do--thanks to Macrobid! DO NOT TAKE MACROBID. The FDA should take it off the market.

Got an RX for this yesterday. I have taken a total of 2 pills (100mg dose). I have had an awful headache since the first dose, nausea and now my neck hurts a lot. Also first dose made me very drowsy and slightly dizzy, napped for 4 hours after first dose. Not taking another one of these ever again. Would rather have the UTI. Hope they can give me something that isn't awful. Why would they even prescribe this? Lucky I found this site because I thought maybe it was just me overreacting

34 year old woman with UTI. I was placed on Macrobid and this is my hird day taking it. I was feeling sooo bad that i started doing searches and found this site and Im happy I did I thought I was crazy. extreme nausea (feels like morning sickness) the thought of any food makes me ill, headaches, sharp stomach pains, extreme fatigue, I generally feel like I have a terrible flu without a fever. I have never had symptoms like this before while taking an antibiotic. I feel so drained that I've been taking 3-4 hour naps during the day. Will call doctor to change prescription. I would rather suffer with the UTI than this!!!

I think I'm going to die... I took pill #6 (100mg) which translates to 3 days and I think I'm going to die... I just got back from ER with liver/stomach pains... even though I repeatedly let the nurses know I was taking Macrobid and Xatral, the doctors never EVER got wind of it and treated me as if I had an indigestion. After taking my 6th pill, my throat is swelling up like mad, I have funny heart beats, strong stomach pain, funny tingling pulses in the fingers, and I feel like I'm going to pass out, I'm out of breath, and I feel so dizzy and lightheaded and I'm afraid of passing out for fear I will stop breathing when I do...

I had intense stomach pain and diarrhea after one dose. Called Dr. on call, she said it was a separate virus from my UTI, and to continue doses. After last dose 2 days ago, I broke out in terrible hives that itch uncontrollably, and looks like I have a chemical burn behind my ears and scalp. I thought it was bedbugs from a hotel, until my eye swelled up. Went to Dr. today, she said it might be allergic reaction to the Macrobid, but was weird that it came after all doses. I have also been sleeping for the past two days with NO energy...

THIS STUFF IS TOXIC! Was prescribed by my OB/GYN for UTI. Took 1st dose on Tues nite, then again next morning with food, etc - by that afternoon, I could not get up out of the chair and began running temp of 102F. I had no symptoms before starting this drug. Called Dr., said this is not possible from this drug - could be a virus, so continue taking it. Visited my GP after 3 days of taking this, he said the same, and my liver enzymes are elevated. The more of this I got in my system the worse I got - fever would not go away, intense sweating at night, insomnia, and the worst had to be the body pains in my legs, chest, arms and hips. On the 4th day in, I swear I was dying and was ready to go to the ER. I would rather live with the UTI than this, so I stopped taking them. Lo and behold all the symptoms disappeared within a few hours. Scares me to think what would have happened had I completed the 10 day dosage!!! I have allergies to penicillin and lots of other antibiotics, so my choices are limited, but this one is for sure off the list.

Lucky me- I started MACROBID Christmas eve for a UTI. I have never taken it before and felt nausea that night then the next morning (CHRISTMAS!) when I woke up I felt like I had been out drinking the night before. I had the worst hangover-like headache. I was tied all day, no fun on Christmas day with three kids, and then I took my nightly dose and headache got worse and I felt like I was going to vomit for many hours after that. What a crappy Christmas day. And lovely gas all day too. I am going to call the doctor in the morning to see if I can start something else! I will be careful to read from now on the possible side effects on any medications I get and be aware of what is happening to me!

Have been to the ER twice - both times on death's door. Blood pressure dropped dangerously low so I ended up in ICU both times. Liver function was elevated. Blisters on hands and face. Can't sleep at night. Feel exhausted. Got so sick that all major organs were shutting down. Doctor's did not realize that I might have an allergic reaction to this drug until I mentioned it the 2nd time in the hospital.

I just received my Patient Medical Alert card from the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association. It is a wallet size card for me to carry with me that list drugs that have or possibly have severe side affects for people with CMT. Seeing MACROBID on it reminded me of my experience with it about 10 years ago.
I am very prone to UTIs. My GYN prescribed MACROBID. After only 1 pill, my right thumb went numb. It spread to my index finger and then my middle finger. I was scared and called my GYN who told me there was no way that the Macrobid was the cause. I didn't stop with that answer. I then called the drug store, where I purchased it from and spoke to the pharmacist. I explained what was happening. He also told me that the Macrobid couldn't be the problem. I didn't take his answer and asked him to please get the contra -indications list and read it. There, in fine print, was possible peripheral numbness that can lead to death. I had 4 small children at the time, so you can imagine my horror. He contacted the pharmaceutical company that makes MACROBID. They called me to record my side effect and told me to NEVER take it again, that I could die if I did. It took several weeks for the feeling to come back in my fingers and hand. They had told me it could have been permanent. I didn't know I had CMT then. And this little card didn't exist then. I am writing this to warn others. If you don't know what CMT is, go to ******. It is a neurological degenerative disease. I am affected worse in my hands. I have a postural tremor in both hands now.
I hope my story helps someone.

After taking only 2 100 mg. tablets, I had a fever of 103, body aches and nausea. I attributed this to the bladder infection and continued the medication. Macrobid was the 3rd antibiotic I was prescribed for a UTI because the side effects of the others were so bad. Took 1 pill in the p.m., woke the next morning with the worst nausea and pain in my neck and shoulders. By the end of the day my lymph nodes were swollen, could hardly move my head. Stayed home the next day I was so sick. The "cure" was worse than the UTI!

I took one pill and ended up in ER with pain so bad through chest, back and stomach that I could not move. My liver levels were off the chart (10X higher than norm), causing my doc to call on Monday after she got the ER triage report. nobody believed it was the macrobid at the ER, and even my doc was skeptical until she looked at my blood test results from 2 mos prior and saw that indeed my liver levels are normally fine. Confirmed with a test that showed them coming back down over the course of a month. Then she found out that a side effect is hepatitis. gee makes perfect sense. why listen to me? Had I been physically able to finish course of treatment, my liver would have been destroyed.

Dont know what the hell is it about this frigging drug;
Took two, only two doses and felt wasted out of my tree; next morning I started to have bery brief, however very sharp little pains right in the center of my chest. Then itching as well. That did it for me. My uti is not cured, of course, however I will do a few extra days discomfort with that BEFORE I ever go on this drug again. That is bloody deadly. Everybody beware; this pill should be removed from the market.

I've been taking Macrobid for almost 2 days now for a UTI and I now have severe, burning, watery diarrhea, stomach pains that almost feel like extreme heartburn, back pain, nausea and recently tonight I have just began spotting. I am 2 months pregnant and I am pissed! If I miscarry and this medication turns up to be the reason why, god help me because my husband and I have been trying to have a baby since last year.

I was prescribed this awful medication! I took the pill at 7:30 pm, on a full stomach, by 3:00 am my stomach hurt, headache and I have awful body aches! My back especially. I got up to read about this, because obviously my doctor did not tell me. I will not take another, I am going to call the doctor and ask for something else! Very disappointed, with all the medications that could help, this one was given??? Doctor's offer so little information, they write out a prescription then send you on your way!So pathetic and sad!

I was given the generic of Macrobid. First day I experienced nausea, indigestion, gas and diarrhea. Severe headaches, dizziness and now started throwing up! I've been on it only 3 days, but I am throwing it away..I feel so horrible, and very weak, almost flu like. Terrible drug, don't take it. I am just praying I don't get the long-term side affects I've read here.

I was prescribed generic Macrobida for UTI and developed pain in my legs and hips within a couple of days of starting it, then headache and feeling lousy, next severe constipation, then anxiety and sleeplessness (I was unable to sleep all night one night). The constipation, anxiety and sleeplessness were so severe and so unusual for me that I decided to look online to see if they might be related to the antibiotic since I hadn't changed anything else lately and found that other people have had the same problems and realized that the body aches, general malaise, and headache was probably related as well. My choices of antibiotic therapy are limited due to allergies and bacterial resistance issues so I will try to tough it out but wanted other people to be aware of some of the problems this medication has caused me.

I have been taking Macrobid for approximately four days. I have had increased headaches that won't go away with normal medication dose. I also have had horrible gas...in addition to stomach pain. I have have had increased urination, having to pee constantly. I have been getting up about four times at night, which is worse than before I went to the doctor. I wasn't sure if this was the UTI or the medication? Saw someone else's posting that they had increased urination too. I'll keep taking b/c I don't want the UTI to continue but the med is not fun.

NONE. I first want to see that I am a hypochondriac. I have health anxiety and worry constantly. If I had to guess, most of the people who come to these sites are the same way. I came here as soon as my doctor gave me the prescription for Macrobid for a UTI.
-- By metonc2008 | Reply | (1) replies | Private Message meI read through many posts and sat here crying, shaking, etc. I figured forget it, I would just live with the UTI. I am going on vacation Wednesday and figured that would be ruined too.
After friends and family just told me to take it, I did. I have taken 3 doses so far and I have ABSOLUTELY no side effects. A few times I have felt anxious or thought that my stiff neck, muscle pain, etc. must be caused by meds. It is caused by anxiety. I am saying all this as part of my recovery. From now on, if I am prescribed something I will give the sheet from the pharmacist to my spouse should I start to come up with a certain side effect. I am going to STOP looking for one. I had a true allergic reaction to Amoxicillin as a child which is probably why I am the way I am. I am done, I am going to stop looking for side effects. The benefit is my UTI is clearing up and I should be able to enjoy my vacation. I am not saying that NOBODY will get a reaction, its possible with any medication, but try not to read too much information online, it will consume you.
