I have been taking Lexapro for depression and Maxide for high blood pressure. I would get extremely anxious when I went to the doctor(White coat syndrome). Hence, the diagnosis of high blood pressure.Keep in mind that for all of my life my b/p was always low-usually 90-98/50-60. Being athletic, this was normal. After taking Maxide for a few months, I developed an itchy back. My dictor attributed this to dry skin. I have always had dry skin, but never a problem of this magnitude. As the months went on,I developed severe itching and rashes EVERYWHERE! This included my hands, feet, ears and scalp! I stopped taking the Lexapro as I felt that that was the culprit. The itching,of course remained, and without my antidepressant, I felt worse than awful. I scratched myself bloody at times and couldn't sleep because of the itching! Imagine being my family! After reading about Maxide and some of its side effects I decided to stop that instead. Results and relief were immediate. I had a little bit of swelling, but I just pushed fliuds and stayed active. Funny thing is, at home my blood pressure is fine and back to normal. I am not saying to try this without your physician's advice. This is just my experience.

I began a low dosage of Maxide on 21 Feb 2006; i.e., 1/2 tablet three times/week for high blood pressure. I have a high sensitivity to any drugs (including Tylenol) or adverse reactions to them so I have never taken medications of any kind except an occasion antibiotic and fortunately I have been healthy. I just turned 61 yrs old and I still think the high blood pressure is due to my husband (LOL). My first two doses of Maxide put me in bed. I was dizzy, nauseous, my legs (toes, calves and thighs) and arms tingled and my knees were so weak I could barely stand. My heart rate soared and my back felt like my kidneys had hardened to stone consistency so that if I looked at my back in the mirror, they would be sticking out of my back. I also felt I was listing to the left, I was shaky and I was very cold. I felt really bad. Fortunately I did not have any rash. The symptoms started both days exactly 1/2 hour after taking the half tablet and subsided exactly 12 hours later. The benefit was that the following day, I felt better than I had since I can't remember when and I had tons of energy (which is new to me) except I still had a sore back.
By the second dose, in addition to the above side effects, my head felt disconnected, my neck hur and the left side of my throat and my left ear felt numb; the nausea had increased. I kept a diary of time and symptoms and faxed them to my doctor but I had taken the third dose by the time she phoned me. The second dose I took a couple hours after coffee in case the drug was interacting with caffiene. No difference.
In the meantime I had picked up some bananas at the store just because they looked good and I had eaten one not long after taking my third dose. My symptoms nearly all disappeared almost immediately. I did not connect the two until reading posts on here, so thank you for that. However, please be careful about potassium intake because an overdose can be lethal quickly.
Good luck to everyone and may you each feel better soon.

I get achey joints when I take Maxide but I don't retain fluid. When I stop taking Maxide, the aches also stop but I do retain fluids and get puffy again - until I drink more water and less beverages, eat healthier and less food, watch what I eat (especially salt), and keep my weight down. When I stop, I also get headaches for a few days but my skin is less dry. When I have taken Maxide with antibiotics, my hair ends split and break due to extreme dryness. Herbal diuretics don't get rid of the fluid as fast, but I prefer the safer, less harsh and more natural method. A doctor-friend of mine told me that Maxide was too harsh for me because I only needed help with water retention and not high blood pressure, which is normal.

I have had a long running history of kidney stones. To no avail I curbed my diet; but it didn't help much. The doctor noted that I was gettig high blood pressure readings when having the kidney stone attacks. When he found that my blood pressure was not returning to normal levels, he prescribed Maxide 25; which I have been taking for a number of years now. Since I have been taking the Maxide, I noted that I have not gotten a single kidney stone. I've even gone back to eating things that I was not supposed to eat; so that I would not get a stone. I'm still free of stones. Can you tell me what the reason is for this?

I've had Fibromyalgia for a long time. The #1 thing, is to have a positive attitude. Get info. about this disease. Get moving. Start out slowly. Do what you are able to do, nothing more and nothing less. I know its hard to keep moving. But if u dont, ur stuck with no life. I've been down this road too. Get some physical therapy. I have found, for me, that pool therapy is the best. I dont have as much gravity to deal with in a swimming pool. The water seems to hold u up. Get involved in som...

by rose81, 2 replies, updated 1 day ago.I was given the fantastic news that my body doesn't like itself anymore. I don't know when it had a falling out, but all I can say is the course of action to remedy this disease is CRAZY. Taking meds that have more side effects and the restrictions on my daily life, because of the meds, no driving, no salt, no sugar, and little fat in my diet, very little sun. Bathing in skin moisturizer, moodiness, mental confusion, can't work, but expected to continue cooking for family, and cleaning. Which I guess ...

I've been taking Triamtrn/HCTZ Tab 75-50 for HBP, approx 4 years. During that time I have had three occasions when my left ankle became so inflamed, swollen, and painful to touch that I could not walk. On the first two occasions this problem was diagnosis as Tendinitis. On the third occasions I have been told that the problem may be a form of gout that can be brought on by my medication. Is it true that Maxide and its generic will produce uric acid which could ultimately lead to developing gout.
