I took Metformin two years ago when i was trying to get pregnant. I have PSOS and i think the meds helped. I have an 11 month old. The Dr. put me back on Metformin 1000mg twice a day to help me lose the baby weight. So far i have not lost any weight but i don't take the meds regularly either due to the severe diarrhea. I normally take 1 pill once a day instead of twice.

In 2007 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. My doctor prescribed 500mg of metformin once in the morning and once in the evening with meals and lots of water. The meds made me drowsy all the time my heart began to beat irregular and I was cold a lot. At night was the worst because when I lay down my heart really beat irregular. I told my doctor after about a week and all she could say is that the metformin doesn't do that to your heart. My answer to her was I 'm not taking the meds any more. I found me another doctor who listens. I went on the internet and found out about the side effect I had they were serious. Listen people you need to be your own advocate no one knows your body as well as you if something don't feel right question it and seek answers. Doctors are not always right pride is no reason to not hear what some one is saying if I say something is wrong and you are a doctor at least hear me and check it out if you don't know the answer it ok you are only human.

Metformin has been giving me a serious problem for 2 months. Every time I take it I get really bad pains in my lower back (on the side). I do not know if this is effecting my kidneys or what. Last week I did not take Metformin at all and the pain went away but the sugar went up. Starting tomorrow I will no longer take it. My answer to metformin is a larger dose of Lantus to keep the sugar down. Side effects were, back pain, stomach pains, nausea, bloating, tired, unable to walk, trouble working (cleaning carpets. If you are having similar problems try not taking it for a few days, if the pain goes away...never take this medicine again. It is doing more harm than good and there are other options out there for you. My answer is more insulin. Good luck

I just started taking Metformin for PCOS and suddenly I began having severe muscle pain on my left side, upper thigh area. So severe that I can hardly walk, sit on a chair or get up once I do. I have had no problem with mobility previous to this. I had severe, runny, almost water-like bowel movements so I decreased and then gradually increased the dosage over time which helped resolve this (sorry to be so graphic). I describe the pain like a pulled groin muscle, although I've never experienced that, but that is the area that the pain is in. Has anyone else experienced this type of muscle pain??? If so, what helped if anything?

I've been taking Metformin on and off for the past year, and I honestly think it's great now that I'm taking it regularly and eating right. I was prescribed Metformin for my PCOS and IR.
When I was first prescribed Metformin, I thought it was causing my hypoglycemia. I didn't eat right when I first began Metformin. I didn't eat horribly, but I wasn't eating right. It'd make me shaky, dizzy, and weak, so I wasn't taking it as prescribed and eventually stopped taking it.
I began exercising regularly and lost some weight while off it, but noticed that stomach fat seemed to go away faster while on it even when I'd stopped exercising. I was only taking 500mg a day then. One thing that it fixed right away was my period. I used to only get my period every three months or so, but the second I began Metformin, it did wonders to regulate my period. I was going through personal issues and again stopped taking it, but then was prescribed 1,000mg a day.
I was determined to take it as prescribed this time and started out slow with 500mg. Even though the previous times I'd never had any reaction to it, I had very bad stomach issues. I kept taking it regardless, and they eventually went away. I upped it to the 1,000mg then. I improved my eating habits by including more low GI and fiber-rich foods and ate more regularly throughout the day.
My periods are regulated, and I haven't had any hypoglycemic episodes. My stomach fat is going down, especially now that I've added in Yaz, and I'm hoping, along with improved diet and exercise, that this helps me lose these last 15 pounds, particularly the belly fat.

I have been on 1500 mg. a day of Metformin. It makes me stay away at night. My muscles hurt a lot. I try to walk but it seems like i don't have any of the energy i used to. There is also bad diarrhea. I am trying to conceive my first child right now. But it feels different to be on this medication. But I am going to stick with it.

I have a metal burning taste in my mouth after taking 500 mg of Metformin each day. I have breakfast and take the meds about 2 hours after. This taste/burning sensation comes and goes all day long. It stops during the night (or I don't notice it) and in the morning when taking dosage it starts all over again. Food taste terrible, I'm eating very little but not losing weight either. What gives???

i'm taking this medication because I'm Diabetic. Is it suppose to have me gain weight? I'm also taking Diovan and Actos since this past May and I've notice the weight gain. I've been on Glyburide and Norvasc for quite sometime and it hasn't made me gain weight. Can these first 3 medications (Metformin, Diovan and Actos) be substituted with medications that doesn't make me gain weight. I'm reaching close to 160 lbs. when I weighed 143 lbs. for the longest time and was doing good losing more.
Thank you,
Val ******

I've been on Metformin for about the past three years. I'm now 65 and a half, and I've recently decided that this drug has caused me a lot of muscle pain, making it hard to take walks (which I force myself to do) and to sleep. I used to put this problem on my age, but since my doctor has been cutting my prescripts back, I am improving. In fact, if I miss a day or two of the meds I am much better. I've never been on Zocor or any Statins (my side effects sound a lot like those mentioned in the Zocor Forum), and refuse to go on them, and am now wondering if I should refuse to be on this stuff any longer, as well.

I took Glucophauge (Metformin) with fertility treatments, when trying to conceive my first child. I got pregnant. I am now on it again trying to conceive for the second time. I have noticed that as long as I remain on a strict low-carb diet (like South Beach type) I do not experience any side effects. If you eat too many carbs you can definitely get diarrhea or vomiting!

If someone can answer this question for me that would be very appreciated.
1. Does this med cause weight gain?
2. Does this Poloystic Hormon Syndrome ever cure, does is cause infertility?
I'm trying to have a child, and i'm concerned about that issue.
The only side affect i have was diarrhea.....It hasn't continued, but sometimes a little gas.

I have had severe boughts of diahrrea. I never noticed a problem until my doctor put me on lisonpril along with metformin and flouxetine. I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome and was placed on metforming and flouxetine and now the doctor was concerned with my blood pressure fluctuating to the higher side and so he suggested the bp medication. I talked with the doctor about this diahrrea and they suggested I take my meds at a different time during the day and for a week and see if there is a change? If anyone else has had diarrhea like severe, please contact me
