I am 43 and have now been on 4 different medications for HBP over the last 8 months. I have never taken pills regularly before. Now the most recent is Metoprolol Suc ER. After reading everything on this post, There is absolutely no way I am taking it.
Is there any HBP drug that does not have side effects?

RECENTLY STATED TAKING METOPROLOL 1 WEEK AGO. I AM BEGINNING TO HALLUCINATE,HAVE SEVERE HEADACHE, NAUSEA AND LACK OF APPETITE. I AM EXTREMELY TIRED AND PRETTY MUCH SICK OF TAKING THIS DRUG ALONG WITH THE OTHER ONE I TAKE. SOME DOCTORS NEED TO GO BACK TO MEDICAL SCHOOL AND REDUE THEIR TESTING.

I have the same head and neck problems and I was thinking about a brain scan. I am switching to quinapril because my pharmacy doesn't carry metoprolol anymore. My head feels almost like it has a band around it and I am extremely tired all the time with nasal drainage and flu like pain in my muscles. I never had this when I was on Topril but I can't afford it. Thank you for relieving my anxiety.

My mother is on Metoprolol Succ Er 50 MG Taast and Synthroid 100MCB @ 1 a day for thyroid. My stepfather told me he has been concerned about her for a long time. She seems to have episodes of delusion, paranoia & can occasionally be qiute vulgar and profane. These are far from characteristics of my mother. I told my step dad I would see what I could find out. Any info. on this would be greatly appreciated.

I am astonished by the posts I am reading here. I just learned about the manufacturing problems with Metoprolol Succinate ER last night, and the recall. I called my pharmacist this morning, and she said she knew nothing about a recall, only that it was no longer available.
When I see what you all have been going through, coupled with what's been happening to me, I can't understand why my doctor has not changed my medication.
I just got out of the hospital two weeks ago from blood clots in my legs. Thank goodness they have not moved to my heart, brain or lungs! Now, I'm on Coumadin for six months.
I have had blood clots, cramping in both my legs and feet, eye problems, loss of balance and vertigo (dizziness) so bad I fell to the ground. Fortunately, I was in my garden and the ground was soft.
I've been complaining to my doctor for quite some time now about the dizziness, and am now afraid to go out and work in the yard unless someone is with me.
Thank you for posting your information. It has been an eye-opener.

Has anyone experienced weight gain after being on Metoprolol? I have always fluctuated with my weight a bit. But this is the heaviest I have ever been without being pregnant. After having my last child I hovered between 160-175lbs.
A few months before being put on Metoprolol I had lost a bit of weight due to stress and got down to about 145lbs. Within less than 2 yrs I am up to 215 lbs. I don't eat as much as one would think I do. I don't drink soda or juices. What I eat is probably less than I did when I maintained 160-175lbs.
Anyone else dealing with weight gain after the Metoprolol? I had one Dr tell me that it can be a contributing factor because the Metoprolol slows down your metabolism and another Doctor told me that a few pound weight gain is sometimes expected but not this excessive.

y story is but an echo of many of the others so there is no use to repeat what is being said. I do believe there is due cause for a class action suit. I hold the FDA and those responsible for its poor performance as well as the drug manufacturers and the pharmacies responsible. I just found out about the recall of metroprolol today when I went back to my local Walgreens to pick up a refill of my prescription. I was told by the pharmacy that four days ago that they had to obtain a new authorization from my doctor to refill it. Today a different pharmacy technician told me they had to send their supplies back to the factory because met-succ was no longer made by tthat company. I thought that strange, and I asked why the recall. I was told it wasn't really a recall, but the company wanted the meds returned to it. In answer to my "what is wrong?" I was told their was nothing she knew of, that the medicine was fin, the company just wanted it back and that I should talk to my doctor for a replacement.
After reading the comments hear I believe we all have been given the runaround. It sure seems like our pharmaceutical companies are trying to copy the Chinese. It looks like collusion between manufacturers of generic drugs and insureance companies. I do not think the doctors were privy to this.
Yes, I'm mad as hell. I hope I live long enough to see a good resolution to this matter.

I was changed from Toprol 50 XL to metoprolol succ 50 mg XR, did not associate problems with the change. Leg pains have started, & got worse, feet are cramping, fatigue so bad I now use handrail to climb steps . Have a shortened sleep period, often awake w/sweats. The fatigue is the worse thing, last year I could go, and enjoy, paintball w/my age-15 son, now I doubt I could last an hour at this. Vision blurs late in day.
Am headed to cardiologist today, will re-post results soon.

I'm sitting here reading all of your posts by happenstance. I got a new looking dose and pill from CVS pharmacy when i refilled my Metoprolol. I came here to look it up; make sure it was the right pill. Instead I have found a plethora of people who are going through the same hell I have gone through for the past 9 years. I thought I was losing my mind and my health. I was put on Atenolol initially during my pregnancy, 9 years ago. I had a strange heart rhythm that wouldn't slow it was like 240-OB ICU and a nice carotid artery massage slowed it before they gave me a shock (thank God) but prior to preg, very healthy. Atenolol didn't give me the long lasting relief i needed from PVC-PAC so they switched me to Toprol XL. I've been 120 pounds overweight and have every last one of those side effects you've all mentioned plus im losing my hair on my head and gaining it on my chin. I called the pharmacy to ask after reading your posts and they recalled ALL Metoprolol products yesterday- so why was my prescription given to me and what kind of crazy coincidence is all of this? Maybe I won't have to feel like I'm dying from some strange disease after this.. Thank you all for sharing your symptoms. I wish you all the best for your lives.

Started taking 25mg Metoprolol ER in Dec. 08 due to episode of AFIB. I am 44 yrs old with no prior hbp or heart issues. I am not over weight and have always exercised. Now, by end of day I am exhausted, but find I only sleep 4 hours before awaking in a drenching sweat. After that, I seem to dose in an out until morning. Also, my sexual desire has been reduced. Is this normal? RD

I was on Toprol XL for an irregular heart beat. Then I switched to the generic Metoprolol Succinate ER. I had no problems until they started being made by a different manufacturer. Not only did they look entirely different, but they did not treat the symptoms. When I called the manufacturer they said that it was very unlikely there was a problem since they were regulated by the FDA. I recently found out that one manufacturer was cited by the FDA in August of 2008 for failure to comply with regulations. It was brought to their attention by consumer complaints. I went back on the the name brand for a while but when I could no longer afford them, I went back on the generic. I had no problems then but I just went back to get a refill and was told the manufacturer was no longer making the generic and only the name brand was available. The generic was ordered from a different manufacturer and was on back-order, so I had to go back on the name brand. I would like to know what is going on with this drug. why have there been so many complaints when consumers were switched to a different manufacturer and why have at least two manufacturers stopped making it?

Been on Metoprolol Succinaate ER 50mg now for two years and have experienced absolutely no side effects what-so-ever. Did experience some minor vertigo from the Quinapril 10mg but cut it to 5mg and all has been just fine.
Just switched from the Quinaril to Lisinopril (highly recommend it) at 5mg and combined with the Metoprolol its keeping the BP where a 20 year old would be jealous.
I think the key to side effects is the 25mg Hydrochlorothiazide tab to keep the system flushed out and eliminate any unwanted build ups of things that cause the side effects.
Great combination and, excellent doctor's at Pima Heart in Tucson Az!

I was taking Metoprolol Succ er 50mg by manufacturer TASAN
When I went to refill at CVS they gave me same medication by a different manufacturer TAETH - This pill is OVAL in shape and 3X as large as the other pill. The Metoprolol by TAETH was very small and oblong shaped.
I have been having severe pain in my shoulder joint. I am concerned that this is a side effect of the different manufacturer's version of Metoprolol.

I am on metoprolol succinate er.50mg. Also diivan Hct 160/25mg. I was on divan hct for about 6months or so. It didnt seem to give me any trouble except all of a sudden the Dr. sarted to talk about my liver. This scared me so I was trying to find out if this pill could cause trouble with the liver.
Then I started metoprolol succinate er about a little over a month ago. I stared to notice leg pain in my legs. I could hardly walk, the pain just kept getting worse. On my own I went off of it one day them called the Dr. He said just go off it until my appointment, which was a week away. I could tell my pulse went up some, so I started to go on a half bill to see if that would help. It helped some, but I could tell there was a little pain, but not nearley as bad. I have a real dry mouth and headache. I asked the Dr. if I could go on anything else. He said metoprolol tartrate. I think you take 2 aday. I dont know if this is any better. Let me know if you have answeres for any of these problems? Thanks

I was switched to Metoprolol Succinate ER from Toprol XL at 50 mg dose once daily. I am diabetic and I was on Toprol XL which was not a problem. Now I have headaches that are horrid and I also associate them with the generic medication. I am one of the happiest persons you have ever met and now I am crying for no reason and feel depressed and angry. My feet are swelling until I can hardly get my feet in my shoes and I am having leg cramps at night because of extreme cold in my legs and feet. I am going this week to see if my doctor can get me on something else. Clearly it is this new medication that is causing the problems.

I am on this site because I am looking for answers. I just realized my headaches, dizziness and flu like symptoms have increased several times over since going from Toprol XL 100mg to Metoprolol Succinate ER 100mg a little over 3 months ago. Apparently my primary care doesn't read much about these drugs after he prescribes them.
However, one other side effect I notice is what I call brain pressure and throbbing. I also take Quinapril 20mg. Who knows, maybe they work against one another. Can anyone help?

After I switched to Metoprolol Succinate ER, the generic form of Toprol XL, which I had used for 4 years with no noticeable side effects, I began having the experience of everything moving faster - heart beat, pulse, intestinal peristalsis was highly accelerated. Daily bowel movements increased from one or two normal a day to three or four. After a few weeks this condition was punctuated by brief bouts of diarrhea(not something I am prone to) approximately weekly.
Since nothing else changed in my food, supplement or prescription drug intake, my digestive system has always worked extremely well, without problems; and because I had a colonoscopy showing no abnormalities in recently years and no occult blood in the stool in a recent doctor's visit, I am wondering if the Metoprolol is the cause. My entire system feels like it is on some type of "speed' drug, sort of a mania experience.
Have there been other reports of this with people who switched from Toprol Xl to the generic?

Switched to Metoprolol Succinate ER from Toprol XL at 50 mg dose once daily. For control of heart rate in A-FIB in combination with quinidine gluconate. For several years, side effect of Toprol XL was the suppression of my cluster headaches. After switching to the generic ER, the headaches are back. Very clear association with the change in medication.

I've had a problem of chronic stress for the past few years. During the past 10 months, I've made 7 visits to the ER because I felt symptoms of a heart atack. Each time I went in, it was EKG, ultrasound, cat scan or IMR, blood workup, oxygen, stress test, etc. I was in the ICU once, for 24 hours. Each time, the results were negative. This past visit (1 month ago), they detected an arrhythmia. This prompted the ER doc to prescribe the drug Metoprolol Succinate ER 25 mg tabs. I am to take it for 3 weeks, then see my GP. Since returning, the heart beat is irregular and somewhat harder than before. It's uncomfortable laying down in bed so I sleep in the living room, sitting up. In addition, I'm taking anticonvulsants (Keppra and Lamictal) and food supplements. I'm due to go in a week and this really has me concerned. I'm wondering if everything is working against each other. I signed medical releases with all four of my doctors but they don't communicate as I had asked them to. The side effects are: constant headaches, ringing in the ears, hallucinations, mental confusion, bipolar/depression, joint pain, weakness in muscles, spasms, panic attacks, increased stress, vision problems, plus thoughts about high medical bills. Any thoughts about this? I don't expect you to respond to this but my email address is:****** Thanks for considering what I've shared with all of you.
