Metoprolol Tartrate side effects

After 1 week taking this pill, side effect surfaced....
Itchy head..a lot of dandruff came off when scratched,
bottom area nearby the sexual organ........moisted n itchy
scratched till the damaged skin occurred.
The irritation of itchiness is unbearable

MY 76 year old mother, on hbp meds for 30 years,METOPROLOL, for quite a few years now ,And she complains of severe pain in her shins, NIGHTMARES, for years now to her Dr. Lately she has been having fainting spells, and at times has short term memmory loss, The Dr did cut her metoprolol in half. dreams aren't as bad, She is going to have a D&C due to uterine polyop, all of this has sent me to the internet researching all the meds she is on, I feel bad I haven't done this research sooner, I just thought the doctors know???? Please we need to do our homework, research and take responsibility, for our health and those we Love.. I have been cooking and shopping for her past month, Lots of RAW fruits and vegetables,garlic and other healthy, herbs and oils, she has lost 10 lbs, bp has dropped 135/70 was 155/90 she is now down to 210 lbs, 5 ft, Im hoping the Dr. will take her off the metoprolol soon

I have had vividly disturbing dreams since taking this- they began 3 days after beginning. Another side effect is serious lack of energy, to the point where I can barely keep up with what I normally did everyday- garden, hike, tend to home and family. Usually by 3 pm I can barely get off of the couch, which sucks because I am a busy woman. Have compensated by trying to get as much done in the morning as I can, and to fix smaller, easier meals. But little by little I've seen the quality of my life go downhill fast- the future on this drug does not look good to me.
Yes my blood pressure lowered somewhat, the irregular heartbeats not so much, but at what cost? Forget this, I don't need it.
Therefore, I am weaning myself off of Metoprolol after only 2 months of use, choosing instead to go with a natural regimine of VitC, buckwheat combined with gingko for blood pressure, garlic and dong qai for blood thinning. Also to mention, I've lowered my caffeine consumption considerably- from 4 or more espressos a day to 1 cup of brewed coffee- and within a week of doing so my blood pressure levels and pulse have returned to almost normal. (This was after both had been very elevated)
So it looks to me like I never really needed the medication to begin with. However I read on the literature included with the 'script that it is not meet to suddenly stop taking it- to do so could actually cause a heart attack! So I am gradually weaning off of it. (and lipitor)
I think many doctors are too quick to prescribe a pill without having a person look at their lifestyle and food choices. The caffeine withdrawals were nothing in comparison with how bad these drugs make me feel. And the dreams are almost enough to drive one nuts.
It's easier to be healthy than we are led to believe by an industry that makes a profit off of sickness, real or perceived, no matter how preventable.

My legs are swelling and that is the reason I googled metoprolol tartrate. I've been on it for a year. The leg swelling thing hs been going on for approx. 6 mos. or so but I didn't think it would be metoprolol. Just thought it was age related or I don't know. I'm 43. After reading all of your posts now I'm scared. I only take 25mg twice a day but I have had many of the same side effects mentioned here. I started taking this drug because I was about to go through IVF and couldn't stay on Lisinopril. I had one episode of atrial fibrilation so they put me on metoprolol tartrate for that and because it is ok to take during pregnancy. IVF didn't work last year and were about to try it again. I wish there was a different drug I could take.

They had me on a 600mg dose to begin with, which I cut way down to 200mg daily.I have high blood pressure and tachycardia and it does lower all that quite well. However, I am scared to go to bed at night, because I wake up shaking like I'm having seizures, I feel like my whole body is twitchy. Leg cramps, ringing in my ears, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, hot sweats, cold sweats, dark spots on the wall, (my blood pressure was normal), thirst, panic and anxiety, not caring about life or the house or bills, and horrible dreams, no appetite, then increased appetite, insomnia,and this all started about 3 days into the meds. Let your body adjust to it, yeah, it's getting worse so we'll see.

03/11/09 went in to have a blood test the MD had ordered. I met with the Md-- told him that the metoprolol 100mg twice a day had not agreed with me. I asked to change my prescription to what i had been taking before -- Norvasc 5mg twice a day along with a diuretic. A week later I went for my lab results. The AST(SGOT) 232 and ALTSGPT) 516, being dangerously high. Md asked if I had ever had hepatitis B. My answer was no. I asked him to check my blood test results of 11/08. The results were AST(SGOT) 24 and ALT(SGPT) 37. I told him I thought it could be the Metoprolol. The Md told me he wanted for me to have CAT scan and to refer me to a GI doctor. Went home praying to the GOOD LORD and received peace about this whole situation. I searched on the internet and found on ****** Metoprolol-induced hepatitis: is the rate of oxidation related to drug-induced hepatotoxicity?L. MS.

" 56-year-old female with a history of migraine headaches developed seronegative hepatitis associated with metoprolol. Her signs and symptoms resolved within 48 hours after discontinuing metoprolol, and were reproducible on rechallenge."
My results for hepatits were negative.On 3/31/09 I had lab tests and 4/01/09 the Md faxed my results AST(SGOT) 29 and ALT(SGPT) 43. I have not gone back to the doctor. I am taking milk thistle daily. I have learned a valuable lesson and am passing it on to others.

I dislike this drug very much. I feel tired and lazy, low sex drive. Trying to get my doctors to take me off it is like pulling teeth. It must pay them very well. I then INSISTED on taking half of the 50mg dose they originally wanted.

I have been taking 100 mg twice a day for less than a week. What I first noticed was seeing dark spots on the wall. Other side effects have been------dizzy, depressed, nausea, lightheaded, shortness of breath, sudden weight gain(5 lbs), swollen hands and feet, uneasy feeling in my chest. I am 58 years old and had been taking Norvasc for over 10 years ---- MD decided I should change to metropol. After reading this page and after how I have been feeling for over 3 days, I am not taking this med ever again. FDA should not allow this med to be prescribed.

Since taking Metoprolol, I have experienced severe hair loss.
I am trying to go off the medication gradually and hope it wont have any side effects to my atril fibrilation!!

I have been taking Metoprolol for a year now at 100mg/day. I have not experienced one adverse side effect. The drug works fine as it is intended. It seems to me that people should be telling their physicians of any problems they are experiencing rather than posting on an internet blog. Some of these posted side effects are likely symptoms of the underlying disease instead of a side effect of the drug they are taking.

anxiety, depression, headaches, sore joints, fatigue, vivid dreams, sweating when not doing anything, weight gain, low sex drive (zero), feeling as if I can not get in a deep breathe and I feel like I have become a hermit...I hurt so bad all the time that I just want to stay home and do nothing...This is not me at all. I am usually an outgoing person who is always on the go!

uncontrollable sweating, vivid dreams, weight gain, headaches, fatigue to the point I rarely leave the house! chest pains, depression, anxiety, dizziness upon standing and achy joints...just to name a few! lol!

i was prescribed 50mg Metoprolol i took it the first morning n i work nights so i went to sleep n woke up feeling sick n left side of my face was numb i wasn't able to work that night. didn't feel right the whole night. second day i took it it wasn't keeping my bp down so i called and doc said take two so 100 mg of Metoprolol. I will tell you first thing i felt was numbness getting worse was scared i had a stroke, was sick, anxiety n panic attacks thru the roof. i finally took a xanex to help me go to sleep as i wasn't able to work that night either. and i woke up with my whole body trembling n shaking and a headache in the back of my head i rubbed my neck and it eased up tho. but the shaking continued for around an hour and i tried to talk to my dad because i felt like i was about to die or something and was chattering so bad it was difficult to talk. I took my xanex to calm that down and it helped calm it again. that was after 4 pills. and the doc was going to increase the mg to 100 no way i quit it this morning went and got my other prescriptions filled bisoprolol and lisinopril they don't just keep my bp down the best but they sure don't give me those side effects that keep me from even functioning. Im thru with Metoprolol. there are too many others out thier that can help besides this particular one. I have only taken two doses and the dreams with really bad heart wrenching situations have happened both nights. Also, I wake up fine, but if I lay down again to read I end up falling asleep and sleeping so hard I can hear myself snoring, I am there, but not there.

But at the same time I can tell my BP is lower, my hands and feet are no longer red and swollen, my upper chest and face no longer look like I have rosacia.

Finally, both days so far, TERRIBLE headache on top of head and across right temple.

I have been on metoprolol since 1995, and I would love to get off it. I does cause horrible nightmares, and high cholesterol, blood pressure increased,
tingling and numbness in my feet, difficulty concentrating, depression, You name it metoprolol does it

So tired at the end of a day behind a desk, with normal walks during the day, To do anything at night. Sleep good 6 to 7 hrs not hungry at night eating habit is very good, alalchol use very little, but still weight gain

I'm taking 125 mgs. Metoprolol per day. I've been on that dosage for approximately one year for skipped heart beats (which were very scary). Now I'm hot. Constantly sweating. It's unbearable. I can't stand the heat! The only time I don't sweat is when I'm not moving. I didn't associate it with the Toprol until now. The doctor has been running tests for thyroid, infections, etc. But it doesn't feel like an infection. I'm just HOT. And after reading some of your side-effects, now I'm starting to put it all together. I've been going through some weird sleep problems that I've never in my life experienced. Never had a night I didn't sleep right through the night...until now. So to sum things up: sweating bad, sleep disturbances and slight depression.

I needed Metoprolol Tartrate for a very high heart rate for graves desease, I was in the 115's+ lowered too 8o beats per min. Which is great!
BUT, having some horrid side effects.
BAD night chills, intolerance to cold. Shake for 3+ hours then sweat. Feels like I was hit by a train after then I get very nauseasous and light headed
Sleep is bad, toss and turn all night and have a greater fear of the dark
ALSO, my bones hurt all the time!! Never did before, had tests done nothing there.
This is the only drug I could find that didn't make my heart flutter and feel all funky. Its a great drug for just that. All the side effects suck..bad

I've been taking Metoprolol for moderate high blood pressure since July2007.
I've been dealing with weight gain....nightmares....sleep disturbances and more within weeks since I began.
I wasn't sure what was going on with me.
I'm 55 and attributed all this to some sort of midlife crisis or something psychological.
I've contacted my primary care physician and will hopefully have an appointment within the next several days.
In the mean time I was told to STOP taking the medication and that he will assess my BP and alternative meds when we meet for my appointment.

Weight gain, general bodily aches and pains , anxiety/panic attacks/general depression, difficulty in concentration, loss of general interest.

MADE MY POUNDING HEART TURN FLUTTERY, SWOLLEN LEGS WHICH DR SAID NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT,CRAMPS, DIARRHEA, ANXIETY, BAD DREAMS, DISTURBED SLEEP, SCARED TO COME OF THEM NOW AFTER READING REVIEWS THAT COMING OF THEM MAKES IT ALL WORSE

It has given me chronic diarrhea and decreased libido. Which is worse. They both suck!!!

at 300mg/day I found it hard to get out of bed for the day. No gitgo

I've been on Toprol for many years due to the Synthroid medication makes my heart race and the Toprol slows it down. I've gone on the generic Toprol, the Metoprolol Tartrate and since I've gone on that, I've notice a lot of hair loss. I never dreamed this med would cause hair loss. Then I read that sheet that comes with the med and it said hair loss is one of the side effects. Has anyone else experienced this? My hair is coming out a lot and it's scary.

I am experiencing cerebral sleep apnea, i am waking up with heart palpitations. If this is part of the side effects this is dangerous stuff it needs to be taken off of the market.

Metoprolol did lower my bp BUT I was so weak I couldn't do anything. I had numbness, palpulations , extreme depression and all the other things that every bp drug does. They should be taken off the market.

I have been taking 300mg for 4 years. The first negative side effect was I passed out. The doctor reduced it to 225mg a day. I also take imdur, norvasc,lasex,altace and quite a few more. I am only 38 and I am surprised I don't have any more side effects. Oh I have experienced weight gain. Has anyone else noticed that? If curious I take all these meds for Hcm with ventricular tachycardia. Had an ICD put in in 2003. Man now that I type this all out sounds like I am in really bad shape. ok I am done babbling. To make a long story short I just want to know if anyone has had some weight gain?

Okay, here's one you probably haven't heard before.
Have been taking Toprol for several years. A week ago, my pharmacist switched my prescription to the generic Metropolol. I took the 7th pill yesterday morning. Last night, I had a weird dream about a flood and I awake to find I had wet the bed! Almost 60 years old and wetting the bed? It has to be from the metroprolol. That's the only thing that has changed!

Even since I started taking it, I've been getting really hot unexplainably and sweating, and unable to cool down no matter what. I also have been having weird dreams, I wake up all during the night and think I see things on the walls or things flying in my room. Last night I looked out the window and thought I saw my brother on the roof next door. also at night, things seem really close to me. The worse though is I'll be sitting down doing nothing and then break into a sweat that just won't stop for a few hours, it happens about 2 hours after I take the pills in the morning and night. Then I'm a little out of it for awhile, sometimes nauseated. Oh yeah the sex drive is zero! which my boyfriend is not appreciating.

Decrease in heart rate, below 60.

I am 41 and have been taken this medication for two months.
I have a constent ringing in my ears. It's about to drive me nuts!

After 10 minutes on treadmill my pulse was33 bp110/60

Blood pressure increased and pulse decreased into the 40's and high 30's

leg cramping. Don't know if it is normal to experience these cramps. Has anyone else had them?

To be honest, I liked this medicine since I took it the firs time because my arrythmia stopped, BUT the libido is gone out somewhere else. The problem number 2 is that if I don't take the metroprolol, I have heart problems, and one advice: Don't ever stop taken the pill once your Doctor give it to you because you will have a real hard experience, he he.

I don't like medicine, before I knew I had and ASD in my heart I used not to take even pills for the flu, now my life has changed a lot, I can't still get used to be an "open heart operated", but I'm happy I'm alive and that the problem stopped.....even I was a little bit old when I knew I was just feeling worse and worse..... I'm 30 years and my heart problem just began.

I have taken lopressor for several years and the main side effects for metroprolol at least in my case are:

1. vivid dreams with irritating situations that Icannot control
2. Transit pain in the lower abdominal wall that goes and comes invariably

Doc said I may feel drowsy for a while (actually said it will "feel like you were struck by a rolling pin, so try to not be alone") Well, he's honest to say the least. Thing is I have taken three doses, fourth due today. First one was kind of that buzzy pre-buzz feeling you may get if you have had one drink too many, but are not actually "drunk". What I'm finding scary now is the last two nights. Apparently I, ahem, fell asleep while my hubby was trying to (ahem again, sorry) "romance" me - which I've never done and I can't remember much about last night. It's like once I turn off the tv and get ready for bed now, I'm gone waaaaaaaay before I'm asleep .... does that make sence?? Yeah, I'm tired, but even in the times when I couldn't sleep for 5 nights straight I could remember things. Now it's like I'm not even "home"! This may not be because of the medicaiton - I used to "shut down" (dissociate) and pull my conciousness away from stressful situations as a kid, after my dad was struck and changed by a car accident. I'm wondering if this medication, in it's three days in my system, has taken me back a few steps in my progress out of that dark place. Yeah, things are very stressful, but until just now I could recall things and I'm "blinking in and out again". With no memories when I "go" elsewhere. I'm not a multiple personality, just to clarify. I just shut down when too much stress is piled on and it's been a rough 5 months between marital arguments, health issues of my own and my husbands, concern about my child (which parents know is overwhelming in and of itself), my mother has been hospitalized 5 times in 5 months for either heart or lung failure and is a new patient on dialysis. . I worry about my sister and her newborn. . . so it was only a matter of time I guess till my psychological instincts took over, but so fast and so furious? It has to be the Toporol reacting to my own pre-diagnosis. (in my case I don't have another "personality" I just end up going through the motions and remember nothing - I have many blank spaces from when I was a kid, and it all started after my dad went to work one night and got smashed by a truck. He lived, but came home totally different - physically he was ok, looks wise, but inside. . . .he was angry, vicious and not the man who raised me. I say often that he actually DID die that night, in his soul. He's come around lately, but now I'm 32, at the time of the accident I was an 8 year old daddy's girl who didn't get hugs anymore. . .sorry, just wanted to clarify is all) Anyone else have something like this?
