I am so glad I found this website. I had the Mirena inserted on April 14, 2008. Since then I've been having anxiety attacks and I'm always tired no matter how much sleep I get. My mom had an accident 2 days after Mother's Day (May 13th) and passed away on July 17, 2008 so I thought my issues were related to everything going on with her. On July 24th (the day after her funeral) I was transported from my doctor's office to the emergency room via an ambulance because I was having chest pains for about 7 hours. After 2 EKGs, and blood work, they could not find anything wrong (thank goodness) and I made the doctors aware that I had the Mirena. I haven't had chest pains since then but I googled Mirena side effects because I still have bouts of anxiety and I am extremely tired. After reading the posts I think my symptoms may be related to the Mirena. I will have a talk with my OB/GYN and see what she thinks.

ilovetc007,

I agree with you, I don't have any kids, I'm 23 and have never suffered from anxiety attacks or chest pains and ever since on Mirena I have been feeling horrible. I feel tired all the time, can't sleep, panic attacks that have rushed me to the ER twice in the 6 weeks that I had the thing in me. I removed it today and will keep everyone posted on the aftermath

My side effects are severe bloating and complete lack of sex drive....at first I bled for days and days and called to have it removed and was told to wait a couple of weeks. I waited a couple of weeks and the bleeding was dimishing so I left it in. Then the light spotting continued and continued and so I made an appointment to have it removed. The nurse told me it was normal and that it would stop eventually and I may not have a period at all. I agreed to leave it in. She was correct in saying that things would even themselves out eventually but I still have the bloating and it's been 2 years now and I have a very light irritating period that is mainly brown spotting but it lasts for seven days straight and puts a real damper on the sex life that already has issues because I just don't feel like having sex. I don't feel attractive with that thing up there...it's uncomfortable and I feel pain in both ovaries on occasion. It's convenient in that it keeps me from getting pregnant but it's really sucky for the relationship when the man wants to do it all the time and the woman has no desire whatsoever. I find ways to avoid having sex or doing anything remotely sexual. It's crazy, I was never like this before. I like the fact that you don't have to remember anything as far as bc is concerned but they need to be honest with people when they recommend it. It has more side effects than birth control pills. I'm now starting to have chest pains and I've decided I think I'm going to have it removed and use condoms from now on. That's the only thing that keeps me from having issues. I just don't think our bodies were meant for all of these chemicals and I wish the doctors would get that through their heads and stop telling us we're crazy when we're not. We know our bodies better than anyone, you can't tell me this thing isn't causing problems in my body that I never had before. I have put off getting it removed because I know they are going to try to convince me to keep it and I don't feel like arguing but I'm to the point where I really want my life and my body back. I also want that extra 20 lbs to come off as I haven't been able to lose it since I had my daughter 2 years ago and had this thing inserted. So anyway, I'm with the rest of you with the crazy symptoms. Oh yea, I left off the fatigue and headaches that I get the week before I start my period. And oh yea, that mood swings are ridiculous. I hope someone is reading this. It's for real people.

I got my Mirena put in November of 2005. Didn't really have any problems at first. I will say my periods were heavier than ever before, and my doctor said they would eventually stop, but they never did. In February, I started feeling extra tired and having some anxiety attacks, but figured I had experienced anxiety before and maybe it was just coming back. Then I started getting dizzy spells, headaches and just an overall bad feeling. Couldn't explain it, just didn't feel well. I decided to quit smoking. Figured maybe that had something to do with it. But instead of feeling better after quitting, I was feeling even worse. I was losing hair in clumps, bleeding gums, sweating much worse then ever in my life!!!! I had pains and numbness in my left leg. I even had chest pains, but it was all over my chest, not just near my heart!! I was also getting very depressed. I could cry because my husband looked at me the wrong way. And talk about not wanting any kind of intimacy!!!!! I wanted nothing to do with it!!! I feel so bad for my husband that he had to go through all of this with me. Thank goodness he's a wonderful, and patient man!!!! I went through many doctors, primary doc, hematologist, back to my primary. Had several blood tests, ultrasounds, MRI and an MRA, but all the tests said everything was fine. Finally, I happened to search Mirena on the internet. And I found all of these stories with women who were having the same problems as me. Thank God I may have found my answer to all my problems. I'm calling the doctor on Monday and scheduling an appointment to have this "thing" removed. I could care less about the side effects from having it removed. I just know that if in a month or two I feel better, than it is worth it!!!!

I had Mirena inserted November 2007 and it has been a horrible experience! I use to have a light cycle that lasted for about 4 days and I never had cramps. Since I've had the Mirena I've experienced cramps and wouldn't dare wish that pain on anyone! In December I bled for 10 days. I was distraught! I figured ok the worse is over, yeah right! Two weeks later I'm bleeding again it lasted for 21 days!!! I started thinking it prevents pregnancy because your bleeding all the time! I've had two more periods that lasted no less than 8 days. I've noticed I've been having lower back pains and some chest pains. Not to mention I keep a vaginal infection!! I've never experienced these symptoms before Mirena! I want to have it removed but if the pain of having it removed is worse then having it inserted I'm screwed!!

I had miren inserted in August 2007....It was easy with no pain. I wasn't gaining weight..I had a flat stomach. I've noticed the entire time that it is painfull, or very sensitive to be on top during sex..I can't do it most of the time because of the pain. If my husband goes to deep or hard, normal sex, nothing crazy..it hurts in my adoman like never before. I've noticed I get the gas, painful cramps that travel through my thighs like I'm having contractions for real. I never know when my period will come, if at all. My abdomen swells like never before whenever it's around some time for a period. I am starting to have acne...I never blamed it on Mirena until I read this. I found this site because I had sex with my husband......afterwards I was having severe abdominal pain and pressure in my bottom as well. My butt was hurting and full of pressure..does anyone have that??? I got scared so I was looking up stuff on the internet. It hurts when I cough and there was just pain and pressure all over. It was hard for me to pee. I have noticed these symptoms before, but they seem to be getting worse or more noticeable like it's a problem. Sorry to get so graphic, but I would like to see if anyone else had or has the same problems. I used to really enjoy being on top and going deep and having my husband deep and having hard sex sometimes. Since I've had the IUD it is not pleasant and I can't do it, it hurts too much. I have always had a flat stomach and now mine is like swollen...I get the gas and I hate it. I switched to Mirena because I was having terrible mood swings on the pill and know I'm thinking I'll take the mood swings. I think I will have the IUD removed....I'm scared my husband will poke it into my stomach during sex. Whenever I have a flare up of pain it usually goes away. This time it took an hour for the pain to go away. That was the worst pain I've had yet that's why I'm on the computer making sure I don't have internal bleeding or something. Scarey.

Hello! I had the Mirena inserted in April 2007, 8 weeks after giving birth to my third child. I was wanting to be on some kind of birth control, until we were sure about doing something permanent. Instantly, after getting this inserted I started experiencing weight gain, severe cramping and bleeding. I had always had heavy periods, except when I had been on the pill. My periods were heavier on the Mirena then anything else. I would spot or have my period at least 3 weeks out of the month. Also, I would have severe pain in my back and around my kidneys. I would get constant yeast and vaginal infections with this as well. I had never had a problem with this prior. I would tell my OBGYN and they would just say this is a normal side effect with this device. I was sent in to have an ultrasound done to determine the placement of the Mirena. The ultrasound tech and her supervisor questioned the placement of the device, but my OBGYN thought that the placement was fine. I would be miserable with pain and had no sex drive at all. This was never a problem for me before. My husband said that this was great birth control, because it made women never want to have sex. I think that he was right. Also, I noticed that I experienced mood swings with my kids, severe headaches, palpatations and chest pains. I just couldn't wait to get this birth control out. My husband got a vasectomy in September 2007 and left for Iraq the first of December 2007. My symptoms kept getting worse, so I decided to get this device taken out. I had it removed on Janurary 24th, 2008. I discussed my weight gain with my OBGYN. She said that I was getting older and it was my metabolism causing me to gain the weight. Weird that I lost 15 pounds after giving bith to my 3rd child, until I had the Mirena put in. Then, I gained 33 pounds in that amount of time. More then I ever gained during any of my pregnancies. Since, I have I had the Mirena removed I have lost 13 pounds and been able to go down 2 jean sizes. I have no headaches, no cramping, no pains and my chest pain disappeared. Also, I had been breaking out with acne and never had this problem before. Now, my face is clear and no problems with acne. Of course, now that my husband is gone my sex drive is back after having this removed. I know that all the OBGYNs love this Mirena for birth control and say that it doesn't have these side effects, but read the boards. Just because the drug reps that are selling this, think it is wonderful doesn't mean that it is great. What else do you expect them to say? The OBGYN group I see has 6 doctors and each one has told me that they have had 4-6 women with the same problems. Most of the women have had this removed, after all the complications. That is just with one group. I think the FDA needs to investigate the "TRUE" side effects with Mirena. I question how safe this product really is. It seems that there are numerous complants about this device, but nobody seems to take it seriously. Best of luck to everyone else. I know that I am starting to feel more like my old self after getting the Mirena removed. I know that it was not the birth control for me.

Hello
I am 36 years old with a 3 yr old and a 22 month old.I had the mirena inserted in June of 2006 after my second daughter was born. It was great no more cramps (I also suffer from endometriosis),periods were shorter life was great. Then in april of 2007 I started getting horrible headaches, dizziness, nausea like I was pregnant and really bad stomach pains.I went to my primary care and he said i had the flu and sent me on my way.I went back in June and had lost 8 lbs and still not feeling good and was down to 2 meals a day and not sleeping and weak. He did some blood work and sent me to a GI specialist. The blood work showed a weird blood count(which till this day no one has ever found out why) and scheduled a upper GI. That came back negative so they gave me some acid reflux meds. Came back 2 months later and then scheduled me for a lower GI that too was negative. So I complained some more and sent me to Boston to the big wigs which is where Im still going to currently and they ran some allergy test and a couple of CT Scans. They all came back negative!!
So its now almost a year later and Im down 28 lbs, 1 meal a day which is dinner so i can go lay down since my husband is home and can watch my girls. I have constant nausea that is worse than being pregnant at least ginger ale and crackers cured that. The funny thing is my Dr. prescribed me a medication for nausea that cancer patients take. Great thanks for adding more toxic crap to my body. Hair is falling out by the clumps and I have very thick hair that my hair dresser tells me people would kill for, no sex drive my poor husband but he sees me in pain and the constant headaches and mood swings are bad. My poor 2 little girls that I adore must think Im this monster since I lose my patience very quickly and always yell at them and snap at my husband. I have constant chest pains that I feel like Im having a heart attack at times, and lower back pain in my kidney areas. The night sweats are getting worse and sleep what is sleep, Im still up and wide awake writing this and will still be up for another 2 hours. I never had a problem with sleep before especially have 2 toddlers.
Luckily for me I have read this and will have it removed immediatley and the fact I am an independent consultant for a health/wellness company will help me get on the right track. This company has a great natural hormone balancing cream that will help me recover from this nightmare. It wont help with the birth control but I will deal with that separately. I have read all of these blogs and most of you women express the hormone imbalance, I can help you with this so if you are interested please contact me. I am so happy I got involved with this company and the funny thing is someone on my team suggested it was the mirena that was causing my health issues.
Thank you all for listening and heres to living healthy...

I have had the mirena out now since the 17th October, I had had it for about 2years.it was causing me mood swings, very bad acne, chest pains, insomnia, a weird feeling-sometimes painful-during sex, lowered sex drive, itchy skin, a weird tingling in my facial skin and very bad pre-menstral depression. Am now using condoms as my sole contraceptive(bit scary, but doing fine so far!).
So far my skin has improved alot-I thought it would take a lot longer, the spots haven't completely gone, but no new ones and it looks alot brighter. Also, mood swings are alot better, no pmt and no depression. The chest pains have gone and the tingling, havent had such horrible sleeps and sex drive is definately back!
If this thing is affecting you, then get it taken out! I feel like a new woman! I have not had another period yet, due in the next week. mmmm...I wonder what that will be like! Weird. Anyway, Im just pissed off I never had it taken out earlier an that I thought I had no other choice. It definately didn't agree with me. Do not listen to any docs/nurses who tell you it is 'only local hormones and will therefore not cause side-effects'! LIES!!! It tells you on the leaflet that it may cause these side effects. I dont know why they give you this contradictory info.
Cheers X

just wondered, has anyone else experienced severe chest pains which MIGHT be a side effect of the mirena? I have been having these for a while and they have gotten worse. I never connected the pains with anything til I was looking at the side effects the other day.....its a bit scary! at first i had hoped they would go away but now i think it might be more serious.
Think I will get this taken out asap, having experienced other side effects, like severe acne and mood swings....lucky that I've just broken up with my boyfriend and don't have to worry about contraception!

I was given the fantastic news that my body doesn't like itself anymore. I don't know when it had a falling out, but all I can say is the course of action to remedy this disease is CRAZY. Taking meds that have more side effects and the restrictions on my daily life, because of the meds, no driving, no salt, no sugar, and little fat in my diet, very little sun. Bathing in skin moisturizer, moodiness, mental confusion, can't work, but expected to continue cooking for family, and cleaning. Which I guess ...
