I thought I researched this product thoroughly, I even worked with a lady who had one inserted and she said she was just fine. My specialist said it was "new improved technology, the best on the market". So I had it inserted which apart from being poked and prodded which is never nice, and him pinching my skin, was reasonably ok.

I was fine for a long time, but after a year or so I found that my quality of life was very low. I am 40 years old so put some of it down to that, I have a one year old so put some of the tiredness down to that, but whatever I did I never felt better. The iron levels in my blood are high and all other checks, i.e. thyroid, are fine so why was I suffering from:

Nausea and Weight Loss (the weight loss is the only good part)
Extreme Tiredness
Thrush
Dry Itchy Skin
Dizziness and Vertigo
Facial and Scalp Breakouts
Greasy Hair
Depression
Anxiety
Headaches and Migraines (I am a migraine sufferer anyway)
Sore Itchy Eyes
Spotting for Two Weeks (6 months of the year!).

I didn't have any problems with my periods before, I had just decided to have the Mirena inserted to avoid further pregnancies.

I hadn't been on any type of contraceptive pill since I was 22 years old and I now remember why I stopped taking the pill in the first place.

Some days I felt great, but would then feel like I'd hit a brick wall about 4pm so would have a very strong coffee to get me through the evening. I'd then sleep like a log and wake up feeling hungover even if I hadn't drank any alcohol the night before (I may as well have and I probably would have felt better).

I then decided to google 'Mirena Side Effects' and found this webpage. I discovered that thousands of women around the world are having the same problem. I got on the phone instantly and made an appointment with my Doctor to have it removed.

I had the Mirena removed last Tuesday, and within a day I wasn't so tired, I didn't need a coffee to get me through the day, or a nap, and my eyes felt better. It's now been five days and I feel much calmer (no anxiety). I'm still tired from running around after my daughter but not like before the removal. I have been having crazy dreams but I assume that is just my body adjusting.

It appears that the Mirena device works for some people, but just not me.

If you feel this way, then have it removed - your quality of life with worth so much more.

Oh, and I can drink wine now and not get migraines - yay!

LADIES.... PLEASE HELP!!!

I had my Mirena removed 6 weeks ago. Unlike most, I didn't bleed right away. It took me 3 weeks before I bleed and it wasn't heavy. I felt better knowing it was out of me but still was EXTREMELY TIRED, brain fogged, depressed. (The only side effects which have diminished were the irritability, greasy hair/skin, and acne.)

It's now been 6 weeks since it was removed and for the past 2 weeks I've been experiencing horrific anxiety and panic attacks. I'm afraid to leave the house... can't focus. Wake up anxious. Don't want to go anywhere or do anything. I'm also depressed about this. I'm still very very very tired all the time. AND THE MENSTRUAL MIGRAINES ARE STILL HERE.

IS THIS ANXIETY THE "CRASH"??? Can it happen so late? My body seems to be "behind" the norm by about 3 weeks. So really this is about the 2-3 week mark past my first withdrawal bleed.

I'M SOOOOOOOOO SCARED

I had my mirena inserted one year ago, july 7th, 2008. I had it removed July 6th 2009 and I thank god that I did. This past year has been a blur. Headaches, weight gain of nearly 20lbs, acne, especially on my chin, greasy hair, puffy bloatedness, constipation, sudden fits of anger, back aches, lower back aches, lethargic, no energy, full body and joint pains and aches insomnia, bad dream, moodiness, depression, extremely sore breasts. ALL since I had this introduced into my body. I am hoping that things will improve. So far this past week I feel a tad better but still have no energy and, of course, the weight hasn't fallen off, but I am hoping that PUFFY look goes away as I continue to eat properly and exercise daily. I will keep you posted as to how I am feeling, week to week.

After a difficult pregnancy and emergency C-section, my husband and I decided that Mirena was the best answer for us to prevent future pregnancy. After insertion of Mirena at 8 weeks post-partem, I experienced non-stop bleeding for approximately three months. I never thought the bleeding would stop. Once that stopped, I only had three very light, spotty periods in the remaining 57 months of use. I have had a lot of side effects that I a lot of you have already mentioned. In five years of use, I have gained 70 pounds. Other side effects I've experienced are cystic acne, greasy hair, extreme fatigue, constant lower back pain, pain during intercourse, no sex drive, depression, anxiety, and mood swings. In 2004, I paid over $700 to get Mirena. After five years of use, I called to schedule an appointment to have it removed during my annual ob/gyn exam. The nurse told me I would have to pay $200 dollars more to have it removed. Our health insurance did not cover the insertion of the device and they do not cover the removal either. Needless to say, my husband removed it last night. The removal itself was not painful although I did experience a little cramping afterwards. I did not have any bleeding either. If 5 years ago I would have known what I would experience in terms of side effects, I never would have gotten Mirena. My husband recently had a vasectomy which cost only a $25 co-pay. The insurance covered that!! I guess we should have checked into that 5 years ago. Hopefully my health will get back to normal now that the device is out.

Hi all....came across this website on Sunday and could not believe what i was reading, after reading the side effects everyone was experiencing i decided to get my mirena coil removed!!! I had my coil fitted just over 4 weeks ago and have been experiencing headaches, greasy hair, spots like a teenager, sore lower back, severe cervix pain, bloating, heavy bleeding, sore muscles in my legs like having flu, hot flushes then shivering, sometimes a feeling of being spaced out, my concentration is poor, crying all the time, mood swings and nausea!!! I was told by the nurse about 2 weeks ago side effects can last 3 months and decided to keep going, but on Monday i decided enough was enough and went to my GP to get it taken out. She could not find the strings and all that poking about made my stomach pains even worse, bleeding heavier and very tender. She sent me to the hospital thinking they would find the strings, but they couldn't either, had to have a scan and internal scan. Well, it turns out that my coil is lodged in my uterus and the strings are not hanging down they are tucked up. So, now i have to back to hospital this Wednesday coming to get it removed under general anesthetic, not so pleased!!! I am writing this as i would like to know if anyone was told the side effects were quite as bad as they are or were they just handed a leaflet to read like me and were they told that they might not be able to get it out easily and having to get it out by general anesthetic??? I think if they are going to give woman things like this then they really have to tell you everything that can happen, especially the fact that things can go wrong!!! I really sympathise with you all who are going through this hell of having a mirena fitted!!! I would not recommend this type of contraception to anyone now!!! I now just want mine out and am counting the days down to when i will be feeling better!!!

Oh my oh my, reading all ur posts is like ive written it myself. I thought i was going bonkers, i think i did actually!! I was on the pill for 16yrs and came off it to have my 1st child, aged 34. Never had any probs with the pill. I had my mirena coil fitted 2.5yrs ago and have had no end of thrush, discharge, itchy vagina and sharp cramping pains on my left. Greasy hair and falling out in shed loads. No weight gain or spots tho. I had the coil removed 2wks ago, that was hell in itself!!!!!!!!!! was looking for the gas and air!!! it took 2 nurses and 4 extremely painful tugs before it finally came out.I was nearly having to go to hosp to have it removed. The nurse said it had embedded into my skin. Bled due to the removal, but then it mustve triggered my period, which lasted just under 2wks. I have never felt so crap in all my life. Within a day i felt low, tearful, sad, headache everyday, face full of spots and very dry head to the point of bad dandruff. Still having cramps and period type backache, i don't feel as low, but still feel chocked & huge sore boil spots. Nice...not. This must be the 'crash' that ive only learn about from everyone on here, not my doctors, which is where u think u'd here it from. Thank all of u women willing to confide.
