Hi all,

I had my mirena out on September 11th, so almost a month ago! I persevered with it for almost three years but I had a hideous time with it: insertion was the worst pain ever; it felt like I had constant period pain; my periods never got any lighter but got longer - in fact for the past 12 months I had two periods a month. I had two scans to check it was in position, which is was (which is something to be thankful for)

I got forgetful, I was so tired which is unheard of, I had night sweats - convinced myself that at 31 I was having an early menopause! And the weight gain, wow. I have been swimming almost every day since Jan and not a single bit of weight loss, despite a very healthy diet.

Having it taken out was pretty uneventful. Ten seconds and it had gone. The bloating seemed to go within a few days, I wasn't tired, this could be psychological but I just knew I felt better!

In just over three weeks I lost 10lbs. Now of course this could be due to more exercise I have been doing, due to having more energy, but considering how much I was doing from January with no effect, it makes you think.

I know three or four friends who have it and LOVE it, guess I am one of the unlucky ones. The doc did ask (who was fine about taking it out) 'would you like another one?' No thank you!

Very disappointed...I became Hypoglycemic!

My story: I became Hypoglycemic within weeks of having the Mirena inserted. My symptoms were; anxiety, shakiness, irritability and nightmares.
I went to a primary care doctor and then to a endocrinologist complaining of that my blood sugar was becoming a problem. I was aware of the feeling of low blood sugar because when I breast feed my two boys (ages now 7 and 10) I then easily became hypoglycemic. However, I have not had this problem since.
Both physicians thought that i had reactive hypoglycemia because my fasting glucose was within normal limits.I have a healthy diet but i changed my eating habits even further (e.g. gave up all caffeine, sweets, alcohol. I started eating more whole grains and had small meals every 3 hours).
Even though I change my eating habits the side effects still became worse.I was starting to get panic attacks, I had never had these before. During one of my worst panic attacks (9 months after I had the Mirena inserted) I called my sister. I kept saying "I don't know what is causing me to be so anxious, I have never been like this before." Well, that statement sank in, I started to think about what was different. The only thing was the Mirena. That night I look up side effects of the Mirena and came across several blogs all describing their disappointment and many speaking about anxiety related issues.
I have to say I felt relief. It was not going crazy. The following day I read the official FDA Mirena web-site and that is when I found out about the effects on blood glucose. It is stated that Levonorgestrel may effect glucose tolerance and the blood glucose. However, my gynecologist never mentioned this side effect so I was not aware of this potential reaction. Btw, I had told both the primary care doctor and the endocrinologist that I had a Mirena IUD but neither of them new about the effects to the blood glucose.
The other interesting thing I noticed on the official FDA Mirena site is that when the list the Adverse reactions (depression, nervousness, weight gain etc...) they say reported by 5% or more subjects...hmmm, MORE...i think that is a key word!
I had it removed one month ago and I am starting to feel better. From what I understand, it may take up to 3 months to get the Levonorgestrel to get completely out of the system. however, my hypoglycemia is starting to diminish, I recently had a cup of coffee without getting the shakes and I can now enjoy a glass of wine at night too. My anxiety is almost completely gone.

What a relief to have figured this out!

Hi everyone. Just got my mirena removed today. I was taken off birth control pills about 8 years ago due to a tumor in my liver from years of taking BCPs; ex-husband had a V, so bc wasn't an issue. I started perimenopausal symptoms around age 38 (I'm now 45), but they weren't severe and I was as regular as clockwork. About two years ago, I started bleeding very heavily with a lot of clotting for about 9 days at a time, and started every third week, which meant I only had 1 clean week/month. Yuck. My doctors agreed that the discomfort of increased bleeding outweighed the risk of the liver business. I started taking a low-dose progesterone pill. I stopped after just two weeks - I felt horrible. My body knows when something's not right. Then I went on the same estrogen-loaded pill I'd taken for 20 some years. It was great the first few months, and then the headaches began...very intense pain about 4 days before my period. It took me months to figure out they were related to the onset of my period. We agreed the pill wasn't for me. My gyn then suggested the mirena, so I had it inserted in October 2007. I went back to having regular periods, but the spotting increased both before and after my 5 day periods (back to 9-day periods, including spotting), but at least the clotting had decreased. Then a couple months later, I started having headaches, backaches, weight gain, and was feeling very blue. I'm at an incredible time in my life...it just doesn't make sense to be feeling down. The last straw was that my hands and feet started to swell up like crazy. Like some others here, I began to feel like an old (really old) lady! And I am heavier than I've ever been...including when I was pregnant! I went to a ladies' boot camp for five weeks in January, ate a healthy diet, and could not lose weight to save my life. In fact, I think I gained weight! I don't like experiencing the normal aging process, hot flashes, moodiness, etc., but at least those things are a natural part of aging. I'm done with all this hormone business for a while. My gyn has now mentioned Novasure (endometrial ablation). I'm too gun-shy to even think about burning my insides permanently for now, so just going natural for a while. I'll check back to let you know if my condition improves. Thanks for posting everyone!
