I had the Mirena inserted about 2 years ago. i have always been slim and have now put on 17 kgs. Even after my third child i still went back to my normal weight.I walk 4 days a week ( Approx 5 klms) and eat healthily but still cant shift the weight going to my doctor to have the damn thing removed. When i think about it i have been more emotional since having it inserted.

HI - I had my Mirena removed yesterday. I had it inserted on Valentines Day 2006 - so 2 and a half years. A week after having it inserted I woke up one morning sweating and shaking like a mad woman....also starting Vomiting and then fainted. I went to my OB/Gyn and he told me that I had a virus and it was nothing to do with the mirena...Hmmm???? In hindsight (yes I know hind sight is 20/20) I have to say I am sure that I didn't have a virus - I think it was some kind of shock reaction to the Mirena - 12 weeks after having it put in I threw my boyfriend out - he just started getting on my nerves!!!....and every month or so I have been getting a severe dry swollen throat they have been getting progressively worse over the past 2 years - once again my doctor told me it was nothing to do with the Mirena, but that I had reflux...or allergies....The reflux medication that I took for a year nearly stopped my natural stomach acid production - so I swelled up (was it the reflux medication or the Mirena?? or Both?) About a year ago I stopped the reflux meds and concentrated on Allergies....at first it seemed to help - I think it was wishful thinking - last month my throat was so dry I could hardly swallow....as I said yesterday I had the thing removed - today my tongue is tingling strangely, but I have a feeling that it is actually trying to go back to normal....here's hoping!!!!
One more thing - I started exercising in Dec 2007....have lost about 5 kgs but for the amount of work I have done, it is nothing. I really hope that now that it is out, I will start to show something for the fitness regime I have been on the past 9 months.
I'm scared of the crash that will probably come on Saturday or Sunday - I started taking 5HTP last week in preparation - I hope it helps.

I had the Mirena fitted in April 2005 because of bad pms and heavy periods. I thought it was great at first not to have the periods, and the pms noticeably subsided for a good 18 months. By that stage I'd put about 4 kgs on, which was starting to niggle me. I worked really hard to keep my weight stable. During the next months up till removal 2 weeks ago I experienced aching joints, particularly back and knees, loss of libido, tiredness, the return of the pms symptoms, and acne as bad as I'd had it as a teenager. When I went to see a dermatologist, it was he who pointed out that this was a major side effect of the Mirena, so when I searched on this on the internet, I was amazed how many women had got the same problems as me. I had started thinking that now I'm 42 I must be over the hill or something.
I had it removed 2 weeks ago, and although my weight hasn't changed, I feel lighter on my feet. My back ache has gone, and I feel much more energetic.
I know other women who have the Mirena and have not been affected in the slightest by these negative symptoms. I guess it's just the way your body reacts. Fortunately I didn't need to ask twice to get it removed, since I understand some gyne's seem to reject the connection between the symptoms and the Mirena. Problem is, it's difficult to find a birth control that suits me. I'm definitely leaving the hormones alone in future.

never have this put in.i had mine put in after my 9th child, that was in feb 2006,since then i have put on about20 kgs,had bad pains in my side, felt sick and had spotting for a week either side of my period.in may 2008 i choose to get it taken out thats when the dr said he cant see the strings.after seeing three different doctors all saying they cant find them i was sent to a gyn who also had a look and tried to get it out but couldn't.sent for an ultrasound that showed it was still there so i was booked in for surgery.when i came out of surgery the gyn told me that the iud arm hadn't came open and it had gone into my fallopian tube.please don't do this to yourself.there were also mood swings and loss of sex drive.

My Mirena Removal....
So i posted here a few weeks ago after I found this site. I had EVERY side effect listed and was so freaked out that i immediately made an appointment for removal.
For those of you reading and wondering what the removal is like..
Well, NOTHING like the insertion. I was so so nervous and it was over before we actually started. The DR was surprised that i was back in his office to have this removed. He then proceeded to do an ultrasound to be sure it was placed properly before removal. And yes, all was OK on the position of it. I explained to him my reasons and he looked at me like he had never heard this before. I honestly can not imagine with all the women he sees that NONE of them have complained. But...as I was getting dressed afterwards, I took a good look in his office. There was Mirena literature ALL over the place. In fact, that was the ONLY thing he was advertising. Not to mention...they made me pay up front with the insertion back in Nivember...billed my insurance and I still have yet to receive my reimbursement. Oh yeah, and that...they charge more than the actual Mirena costs, then they bill your insurance for the price they know they will pay and the DR then makes about $150 profit. Nice.
Ok, back to my side effects post Mirena. The removal was not painful at all. I did spot for about a week- nothing too heavy but it was clotty and def there.
A couple of days after the removal it felt like I was coming out of my skin something terrible. I figured this was my body adjusting to the lack of hormones. I also had some headaches.
It has now been 2 weeks and the spotting has disappeared. I also can see the bloating of my stomach is starting to go away. It looked like I was about 4 mos preggo while I was on it. I also have an increased sex drive. And sleep-- well let me tell you, I have not slept this good in a very long time. I am actually sleeping more than 6 hours now and the night sweats have also discontinued.
I can't believe EVERY time I come to this site and look up Mirena ALL the people that have posted their experience as being negative. Yet, the DR looks at me like I am crazy! I have been seeing him for years and I have never complained about something like this. I really am so happy that I have it out and wish I would have done my research on this prior to insertion (which was one of the most painful things ever!)
So..for those of you out there that are either contemplating having it inserted...I say NO WAY. And for those of you out there that are nervous about the removal or not sure..I SAY YES, DO IT! For our bodies to be reacting this way, it is clear to me that it should not be inside of us. Listen to your bodies...they really do speak to you and let you know when something is not right. Forget about the DR saying it is safe or he has not heard of any of these side effects...YOU be the judge.
Good luck! And I promise it gets better once you get that lil' demon out!
