I've posted here before right after I removed my mirena. Well it's been 27 days since I've had it out. At first I felt great. I had a period two days after I removed it. That period lasted a week long. Right after my period I CRASHED MAJORLY!!!! I had severe depression, severe anxiety and really bad leg and joint pain. All of that lasted about a little over a week. I got put on clonazapam and 20 mg. of celexa. So far I'm doing pretty good. I still get a little leg and joint pain, but not as bad and it doesn't last as long. I feel 90 % better and am expecting my second period on the 9th. I really hope I don't crash again. It was awful!! While on the mirena I had high blood pressure, fast heart rate, low grade fever, joint and leg pain, anxiety and depression, bloating like I was 4-5 months pregnant, nausea, heartburn, headaches, body aches (like I was sick), carpul tunnel syndrome (which I only get when i'm pregnant just like the heartburn) and more! Everything went down or completely away within a couple of weeks of having it removed. All except my heart rate. I am on a low dose of beta blockers to keep my heart rate from going over 100. Just like many of you I have been tested for many things like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and so on. i have also been suspected of having hyperthyroidism, but with negative results from blood work. We are experiencing a major hormonal imbalance from this mirena. I just hope and pray our dr.'s will do their research and realize we are all right about our experiences and something can be done about this IUD. There is hope. Your bodies will regulate. It's only been about 4 weeks for me, but I am feeling better so far since my crash. Don't hesitate to tell your dr.'s about any depression and anxiety you may be experiencing as those are very serious side effects and can be treated even if it's just temporary to get you through the crash. I also take a one a day multi vitamin. So maybe that will help to.

I find it extremely annoying and offensive that people have the nerve to comment things like: You are all complaining or whining, read the side affects before you use it. why do any of you think that you are more educated or better than any of us? of course we all knew the side affects but people react to medicines (etc) differently. i find it very hard to believe that all of these symptoms are coincidence. 99% of us have given birth and raised children which is the hardest, most challenging, emotional roller coaster and im sure we are all able to deal with a headache now and then and mild cramps but that is not the case with us. its a problem when you wake up every morning with migraines and back pains. it is also a problem when women are so depressed and tired that they aren't able to take care of their children and husband. we all have one thing in common. We are suffering from these side affects. I appreciate everyone who has opened up and told their experience and i will not let someone comment about any of us and tell us we are making this up in our heads or that we are whining. if you feel any of those no one is making you read these stories.. so GET LOST!!!
for those of you that have had a great experience with Mirena why are you even on this site?? you are no help to those who actually need help and those that are suffering.
bottom line is no one is right or wrong but this forum is made for those who want help not someone adding their input to make us feel even worse.

I had the Mirena placed in Sept 07. I truly thought I had found a great and simple birth control method..I have read many of the posts and seem to have realized some of the things that are going on with me. I have the hair loss, lower abdomen pain, lower back pain, tiredness, leg pain to the extent of not sleeping at night, and the most depressing one is the WEIGHT GAIN! I have always been able to control my weight within 5-7lbs. but not now! I have put on at least 15lbs and can't seem to get it off for anything! It's horrible! I feel bloated all the time, and seem to have some moodiness that I could just scream! I took a low dose of birth control pills for 16 years and NEVER had any of this!! I have seriously been thinking of having it removed, for those of you that have, does the weight hang around or have you lost any since the removal? And, are all hte crazy symptoms better? I would love any information!

I just had mine inserted yesterday. I wish I would have read this before I did it. Today i started having leg pain... I did a search online about leg pain and noticed it could be a sigh of a blood clot.. I called my
Doctor and she said to take some Tylenol and if it does not go away to call her back.. It went away but I am terrified. I cant afford to gain weight or get anymore bacteria or yest infections than i already have.. Thanks for sharing your issues. I will call to have this removed on Monday... I have had a head ache since last night..

Has anyone had side effects pop up after 3 years? Yes, you heard me. Three years. Hair falling out. Joint pain. "Foggy headedness." Chest discomfort. Gotta be that. Please share.

I have had mirena in place for two months now...I have experienced cramps, leg pain, constant bleeding, weight gain....so I went in today to get it taken out. The doctor refused to do it because they said those things had nothing to do with the IUD.....I have a heart problem and he said it is more dangerous to get pregnant then have mirena in me.....why is it his choice? I would rather get the pill after all I have experienced.....there is no reason for me to gain all this weight. Im pissed, I want it out but cant take it out myself. But why is it his choice?

I have had my IUC for 10 days and I want it out already. After only 10 days I am so bloated and my breasts are huge. I have a metallic taste in my mouth, dizziness, and anxiety. I only have it so I can use estrogen for menopause. Forget it! Is there anyone out there that can tell me these things get better with time? Why do the doctors push Mirena? Why?

I HAD MIRENA INSERTED A YEAR AGO. IT WAS OK AT FIRST. JUST BLED FOR 3 MONTHS STRAIGHT AND MIGRAINES OUT OF NO WHERE. I HAD NEVER HAD MIGRAINES BEFORE. THEN THROUGH THE YEAR IVE HAD ACNE, CANT LOSE WEIGHT, MOOD SWINGS, NO SEX DRIVE, DEPRESSION, LEG PAIN, CRAMPING, COULDN'T WALK UPRIGHT, BAD WATER RETENTION, AND A FEW OTHER THINGS...I DECIDED TO TAKE IT OUT AND FOR THE FIRST 24 HOURS IVE BEEN PEEING A LOT. I RELEASED ALL THAT WATER AND I DON'T HAVE LEG PAIN OR WALK FUNNY ANYMORE!!! PREVIOUSLY I SAW A PSYCHIC AND WITHOUT MENTIONING THE IUD SHE TOLD ME TO TAKE OUT THE THING BECAUSE THE HORMONES WERE WORKING AGAINST MY BODY AND NOT WITH IT. SHE SAID IT WAS CAUSING EMOTIONAL ANXIETY AND IT WASN'T GOOD FOR MY MENTAL HEALTH...WEIRD HUH?

I had the Mirena put in July 08' and have been miserable ever since...I have had nonstop cramping, headaches, leg pain, and now a regular fever.. I was told by my Dr. that the Mirena was a great form of birth control, and that after at least 2 days after insertion, you would forget you even had it in..I begg to differ with her on that...Everyday and night im reminded of this device with the horrible days, and long sleepless painful nights.. I will be going to have this removed, and if my doctor refuses to do so, I will do to the nearest ER and have it removed...I don't recommend this device to any women out there, its made me unbearable to live with and bed ridden..to all the ladies out there, please do research on this product, and don't go through these nasty side effects......

Hello everyone. I am posting follow up after my first posting which was a few hours after removal. (6/20/08 removal, insertion was 9/2007)
I can't believe how much better I feel! It took about 2 days for the headaches to stop. I was having daily major headaches, now its weird to every morning look at my husband and tell him I DON'T have a headache when I used to reach for the Advil every morning.
Before the iud, I was on birth control pills everyday for a year to stop my periods. (I had my tubes tied years ago). It took 3 days for that old feeling to start just before my period started. I was actually happy! I felt like a woman again. I know it sounds weird, but I really wanted my cycle to clean everything out so to speak. It as a usual heavy period but I felt so much better than without it with the iud.
When I had the iud inserted, for almost a year I hardly ate anything and gained weight, since it was taken out, I'm starving! Maybe my body was just so deprived of anything and all the BS with the iud that it puts your body into this "starvation" like mode, no energy, weight gain, no appetite and just a crummy feeling.
I do not feel as bloated all the time, no headaches, less leg pain and joint pain, I feel more "focused" and can pay attention like a fog is lifting. My nickname is not superbitch this week LOL.
I feel sexual again, sex no longer hurts and there is no painful cramping upon orgasm like before. I no longer have the dull ache which was constant where it was inserted, there is no sharp burning pains but the biggest thing is how much better I feel!
With only a few weeks past, and the difference I feel, I can't wait for any left overs from this thing to stop. ANYONE no matter age or circumstances, should not use this device, it has made my life hell since I got it. This thing should be taken off the market! I think there should be a class action suit filed. I hope I can repair the damage it has caused in every other area of my life: marriage, job, personal relationships etc.
Not one person I talked to about this iud had anything positive to say, everyone of the women I talked to all had problems upon problems upon problems. Every doctor said it was NOT the iud, and it was either all in our heads or we were suffering from some mental disorder. How wrong they were!
I'm looking forward to getting my old life back but I still think that Bayer should have to pay for all the damage they caused!

Used Merina from May-2007 to April-2008 so it is almost 1 year I used it .
Initially I felt this was fine for me and I got used to it for the first 4 months then the problems started .
Back pain , Leg pain, Knee pain and my heel pain was too severe that I could not walk properly .
On one unfortunate day I was suffering with fever and severe vomiting
then when I consulted Doctor I found that I was conceived even though I had the Merina and doctor told in rare cases it happens but it happened to me means it may to anyone and then I had to go for MPT as it may cause injury to baby in the womb, then immediately I decided to remove it and on April -24 I have removed it .But still my pains persit as it is only 15 days passed.
CAUTION : I suggest everyone not to go for any external devices to be inserted to the boby which may cause adverse impacts on our health .
Please go for other options not for any external devices though suggested by anyone.

Hi ladies,
I have had Mirena out for a week. I feel better. "Nyrek" posted yesterday about Bayer and the information on their website. here is the web address: ******
Scroll down and look for Mirena. Hit the first PDF for Product Monograph. She is absolutely right!
Quite upsetting to know that within 2 YEARS I may be able to get pregnant! I don't have that much time to spare. My little girl will be turning 5 at the end of May. It is now or never. I hope that I was able to get rid of much of the hormone from my body. I have been feeling way better. No crazy fatigue. Nothing. Some nausea (my period) and some joint pain but I had those before Mirena. Not as severe now. i have Fibromyalgia. Hopefully that goes away too.
There is a huge difference now compared to before. My body has been adjusting and coming back to its normal state. It is amazing! I am really ticked to have read that the hormone enters the bloodstream in 15 min. I thought it was a localized thing. It explains the extreme bloating and weight gain those weeks after insertion. Plus acne. Then I lost weight once the anxiety and depression set in. No wonder we are all messed up! Not cool at all!
If you all need my account for that class action suit, let me know. They make this thing out to be so wonderful when all it does is make you a walking wreck. Absolutely scary. It does work against pregnancy but at what cost?
One side effect that always got me was that I felt these spasms in my uterus, much like the ones I got when I was near the end of my pregnancy. It was crazy! At times I thought the thing had failed and I was truly pregnant. Anyone else had these weird spasms or cramping up? I still urinate a lot. Still feel some pressure down there but not like before. I still think it is my period as I'm at the end of the cycle. I have this bad feeling that although they say the hormones leave at half life, each woman reacts differently. While I felt relief on Day 1 of removal, others have taken longer. Just how long does it truly take? Especially when it has wreaked so much havoc in our bodies? I hope it does not affect my ability to conceive. That is definitely not nice!
Well, if anyone could let me know about the weird spasms, i would appreciate it! If any of you have had a baby after Mirena, how long did it take you to conceive???
As always, Good Luck, Ladies!

My Mirena Removal....
So i posted here a few weeks ago after I found this site. I had EVERY side effect listed and was so freaked out that i immediately made an appointment for removal.
For those of you reading and wondering what the removal is like..
Well, NOTHING like the insertion. I was so so nervous and it was over before we actually started. The DR was surprised that i was back in his office to have this removed. He then proceeded to do an ultrasound to be sure it was placed properly before removal. And yes, all was OK on the position of it. I explained to him my reasons and he looked at me like he had never heard this before. I honestly can not imagine with all the women he sees that NONE of them have complained. But...as I was getting dressed afterwards, I took a good look in his office. There was Mirena literature ALL over the place. In fact, that was the ONLY thing he was advertising. Not to mention...they made me pay up front with the insertion back in Nivember...billed my insurance and I still have yet to receive my reimbursement. Oh yeah, and that...they charge more than the actual Mirena costs, then they bill your insurance for the price they know they will pay and the DR then makes about $150 profit. Nice.
Ok, back to my side effects post Mirena. The removal was not painful at all. I did spot for about a week- nothing too heavy but it was clotty and def there.
A couple of days after the removal it felt like I was coming out of my skin something terrible. I figured this was my body adjusting to the lack of hormones. I also had some headaches.
It has now been 2 weeks and the spotting has disappeared. I also can see the bloating of my stomach is starting to go away. It looked like I was about 4 mos preggo while I was on it. I also have an increased sex drive. And sleep-- well let me tell you, I have not slept this good in a very long time. I am actually sleeping more than 6 hours now and the night sweats have also discontinued.
I can't believe EVERY time I come to this site and look up Mirena ALL the people that have posted their experience as being negative. Yet, the DR looks at me like I am crazy! I have been seeing him for years and I have never complained about something like this. I really am so happy that I have it out and wish I would have done my research on this prior to insertion (which was one of the most painful things ever!)
So..for those of you out there that are either contemplating having it inserted...I say NO WAY. And for those of you out there that are nervous about the removal or not sure..I SAY YES, DO IT! For our bodies to be reacting this way, it is clear to me that it should not be inside of us. Listen to your bodies...they really do speak to you and let you know when something is not right. Forget about the DR saying it is safe or he has not heard of any of these side effects...YOU be the judge.
Good luck! And I promise it gets better once you get that lil' demon out!

I just had my Mirena put in yesterday1-17-08. It was very painful, the doctor had to dilate me 4 times, because she said I am small. Then she had trouble putting it in because of my retroverted uterus. about 30 minutes after I left I had cramps and my entire left leg hurt bad. My toes tingled, and my whole leg was in pain all night, today it has been off and on. Also I have noticed being short of breath. I am already regretting this decision. I have had no energy which is odd for me. I can feel the Mirena in there, I am worried that it will hurt me because I am smaller than average (4'11" and 104 lbs.) my husband and I have a 14 year old son and don't want anymore kids, but condoms are driving us crazy and it scares me because I am 35 and do NOT want to have a baby at my age. So I thought this would be perfect while we decide on something more permanent. I am going to give it one more week and If I don't feel any better it is coming out!!! I am so glad I found this site, because the doc already told me that my leg pain has nothing to do with the iud even though it started right after I got the iud, she told me to go to a chiropractor or my family doc, because she said it had to be something else. I don't believe her.

I didn't even relate all these other side effects to my mirena (tiredness, acne, depression, joint & leg pain), so at least I have a clue where all that came from. My biggest problem with the mirena is that at my first checkup, the midwife couldn't find the string, so I had an ultrasound, which did not show it, and then an x-ray which did, but not in my uterus. It's off to the side somewhere, apparently perforated my uterus & travelled to somewhere inside my abdomen, where it is now going to have to be surgically removed, and who knows what other damage it has caused in its travels.

I had my iud for a month and then all of a sudden one night i noticed a horrible pain in my left leg that i couldnt get to go away.I laid on the floor and elevated my leg with no relief. I tried to get up off the floor so that my husband could take me to the er, i then realized that i couldnt walk, i was having blurred vision, numbness in my left arm, slurred speech. My husband took me to the er and they did an ekg, ct scan, x-ray, mri of my entire body during my day 2 day admittance to the hospital. They found nothing wrong with me, i still continued to have leg pain, inability to sleep at night and was forced to take motrin to help me fall asleep. I had another episode two weeks later that cause the same symtoms along with a really bad panic attack, this time the ambulance was called and they took me to the hospital and the drs said noting could be found to be wrong with me. Well i then decided to have it taken out and here i am almost three months later symtom free. I dont reccomend mirena to anyone. I truly felt like i was having a stroke with all the symptoms the two have in common.

I had the iud inserted last September due to very heavy periods. My doctor told me I would have very light periods or none at all. It was very painful to have it insered. I experienced heavt bleeding for 3 months straight which has since become very irregular but heavy periods with spotting in between. There are probably only 6 days a month when I don't have some kind of bleeding. I never know when it's coming. I have had very little acne but defintley experienced cramping, headaches, leg pain, tired all the time, very low sex drive, not that that matters because of all the bleeding. Thanks god my husband is very patient. I have made an appt to see the GYN in August. My only other option is a hysterectomy. I think it would be better than this.
