For all of the poor girls who are searching "mirena experiences" because you are looking for a sure thing contraceptive-
This site is only for people who have had BAD experiences. Read them all if you want, but take into consideration they are the 3%, or whatever number, that had problems. None of these women deserved it, asked for it, needed it, or wanted it, but unfortunately their bodies responded to it in such an ugly manor.
Here's my experience so far....Had it inserted 8/06/08. Insertion was fine. Felt that speculum more than I could feel the actual insertion of the mirena.
Slight cramping afterwards...not immediately-went home and for like 20 minutes had cramps lighter than my period cramps.
For the first week bled lightly, second week had an actual period, week three and week four just spotting. The doctor told me this can go on for up to six months...kinda worth it if you think about it.
No acne problems so far, my hair is fine (and trust me, if my hair was thinning, falling out, or anything like that I would take the mirena out!), muscles and joints feel like they did before pregnancy, still breastfeeding (I know that they say that the mirena will make you produce less breast milk-tell that to my breastfed 13 pound 24 inch long 2 month old. he would disagree)
My breasts are a little tender and at first I was slightly bloated (less than if I were on my period) but that has subsided. Abstained from sex for a month after insertion per my doctor's orders, so I will come back and post if there were any problems with that...NEXT WEEK! yay!
Know that I understand the side effects could show up later.
Now again, EVERYBODY will experience something different. We are interfering with nature. Birth control is one of the most unnatural things we could do to our body.
Again, since this site commonly comes up when searching the mirena, I want for women to know that it might work for them better than it did for others.

I had my Mirena removed just this past Wednesday after suffering for 2 1/2 years with every single one of the symptoms all of you have complained of. Major weight gain and inability to lose any; acne; constant flu-like muscle aches; extreme irritablity; bloated; leg, face, hands & ankle edema; random nausea & dizziness; forgetfulness; cold intolerance; eczema on my hands; elevated blood pressure; hair loss ... I felt like a 90 year old 36 year old.
After endless complaining to a very dear friend (who is 42 and was researching BC because her doctor took her off of the pill) she had come across this forum as well as the few others like this and sent me the links. It never dawned on me that it could be the Mirena, so I made an appointment to have it removed.
So, I had it removed this past Wednesday ... just a slight twinge and it was out...nothing at all like having it inserted ... and feel better already. I started my period pretty much as soon as I got home from the doctor (hadn't had one in 1 1/2 years), although I've read some women take a few days/weeks to start up again ... and for the last couple of evenings I've had some pretty intense cramps (never had them before) ... but at least the bloat this time feels NORMAL for me for being on my period.
My doctor said it'll take probably 2-3 months to get back to normal as far as everything else is concerned, but she wasn't surprised at all of all of the symptoms I had being Mirena-related, especially when I'd told her that my periods stopped completely. It's my own guess that the 20% who stop bleeding altogether are the ones most sensitive to the hormone and will more than likely have the most problems from it. I figured for me, anyway, if something is too good to be true, it's because it is. *lol*
I'm just thankful my darling husband has been so supportive and has had no problem weathering out my storm, so to speak.
Good luck to all of you that are having problems ... and listen to your bodies. This might be the perfect alternative for some women, but everyone's body is different.

headache, nausea, moody, hot, difficulty sleeping, chubby, chubby chubby - even the neighbors have noticed! I was wondering if the IUD could have caused all of this, or if it was just my age, 42. After reading all of this, I'm pretty sure it's the "thing"

I am so glad this site is here. I started to think I was crazy. I got my Mirena put in on June 30th. Since then I've experienced excessive bleeding, stomach cramps and recently began to experience nausea as if I were pregnant. My bleeding has been so excessive that prior to having a baby I never really had long periods nor did I bleed heavily enough to go through a pack of pads. Now, I got through a pack of pads in two weeks. The nurse at by GYN says to take 800 mg of Ibuprofin inorder to stop the cramping and excessive bleeding. Ive found that taking 800 mg in the AM and at night stops the bleeding and cramps but, does this mean I will be taking Ibuprofin throughout my time with this birth control??
I was so sure I was pregnant I went out and got a pregnancy test to check. Thank god it was negative. I just had my first child May 8th and I'm not ready for another child right now. I've recently relocated to a new area and I'm still enjoying being on an extended maternity leave. Not to mention... I scared the heck out of my husband!! I feel so unsure about Mirena but I'm willing to try it out a little longer but, in addition to Mirena I'll certainly be using another birth control method for back up like a spermicide or something.

Ive had mirena for 2 years now, I haven't had very many problems. not like some of the other women here. I sorry for all of you. I think mirena is great. at one point i had severe mood swings, but that was for about a month. other than that everything is good. sometimes it does hurt when I am having sex, if it gets too rough or too deep. I don't have a period. when I first had it put in, which was in august 2006, 3 months after having my little angel, I bleed for about 3 months and had severe cramps, but my doctor did warn me about that. everything is great now. every once in a while I will get some nausea. almost like being pregnant again! Im good though. Sorry that you all had a bad experience with mirena. good luck finding something else!

I had mirena placed in may08. Things went relatively well. However, I have had lots of cramping and low back pain. I have NO sex drive!! I have spotting for weeks at a time. I have lots of burning, here and there, when I pee, and lots of cramping after. I've been losing lots of hair. Recently, I've started having lots of clear, gooey discharge. And frequent bouts of nausea. And when I do have sex, OH MY GAWD!!! The pain after is unbearable. Often I get so much stomach and back pain, I vomit. This is not something for me.

I thought I was going to die for the first couple of days after I had Mirena inserted. The pain was unbearable! I had to take Vicodin and laid in bed in the fetal position crying and fighting the pain and nausea. I thought, "What have I done!?" But, eventually the immense pain went away. But not for long. I have horrendous cramping before, during and after every period. I go through Aleve and Ibuprofin like crazy. Then, I ended up with ovarian cysts, I thought I was dying, it hurt. Now, after reading these postings, I realize that I have even more side effects to blame on this device of torture! I'm bloated, gained a crap load of weight, am bitchy ALL the time, I always feel exhausted, and wish I could disappear. I friggin' hate this thing. I have been thinking about having it removed for a while. I have now made my decision.
Good luck to everyone else out there dealing with the effects of Mirena!

I have had mirena since Mar 07 and I also have pain during intercourse, sharp pains in my pelvic area, my face started breaking out (never had ache) and horrible discharge gummy and clear. Has anyone else experienced the discharge. It is so uncomfortable for me I do not want to have intercourse with my husband of 6 years. I think I will have this removed on my 8/25 appointment. Any advice in regards to the discharge would be great. Thanks!

I,ve had mirena for 2 1/2 yrs and it has been the worst 2 1/2 yrs ever! I went to the ob 8 months ago to have it removed and my Dr. would not take it out she said that there was no possible way that it could be causing my 6 days in a row migraines that only respond to imitrex nothing else. So for the past couple of days I've been trying to make an appt to have
mirena taken out but the appts are like 2 weeks wait. I removed it myself this morning took a while to find it, hope this doesn't offend anyone I just wanted it out that bad. I really hope I start to feel better and that all the symptoms tat I have been having are not all in my head. My symptoms include no menstrual bleeding but instead a viscous cycle of Pms, cramps, headaches and fatigue that never go away. For the past 10 months I,ve had migraines and have been taking imitrex consistently. I don't ever feel like getting out of bed and my 2 oldest kids don't understand why I'm so ill and my youngest 2 1/2 says mommy has a headache, all day long. I'm curious to know if any one else has had migraines or chronic neck pain? Thanks.

I've had mirena inserted about a month after my son was born he's now 15 months. I haven't had any side affects until now. Today is Monday Aug 10, 2008. On Saturday I was completely out of it. I was experiencing cramping, nausea, spotting, and the worst vomitting. What was wrong with me. Everyone suspects that I am pregnant. Not to mention that I slept for almost 7 hours on Friday. I have been searching every website to see if anyone experienced a pregnancy on mirena. I have found helpful advices. My husband says he's sueing if I'm pregnant, but I will be more concerned about having a healthy baby. At 22 this would be my third baby, it was unplanned nevertheless I will be happy. I pray that the baby is healthy and beautiful. I will see a nurse today to confirm if indeed I am pregnant. No birth control is 100 %. I don't know who to prevent pregnancy. I think it is Gods matter and man can not take it into their own hands. He said to be fruitful and multiply. Keep me in your prayers as I would for you.

I originally posted how happy I was to get the Mirena. That was on July 22nd when I got it put in. I thought it would help with my heavy periods and terrible cramping I get every month. Instead, I was bleeding and cramping for the 15 days I had it in. I had it removed at 4pm today. Thank God! I also suffered with mood change, stomach aches, diarrhea and nausea on top of the terrible cramping and bleeding that came along with Mirena. All that in for 15 days. I'm so happy it's out! I feel much better already and it's only been about 5 hours. If you don't feel well, take it out. It is nothing like getting it put in, it does not hurt at all. It took a few seconds to take out. I've just about stopped bleeding as well. Good luck everyone!

I'm so glad I found this site! I thought I was going crazy! I got my mirena inserted about 2 months ago, and I feel horrible! I cramped severely when they were putting it in, after they put it in, and still now. I have really sharp pains every now and then that almost completely takes me to my knees. I've been moody, my l sex drive is shot, I have no energy, I'm bloated ALL the time, and I can't seem to loose any weight what so ever! I was previously on depo provera and experienced weight gain so that's one of the reasons why my doctor changed me to the mirena. I have not had any children yet. I thought maybe that was why I was experiencing such horrible cramps. I also, can feel it in me. My doctor asks as if I'm crazy too when I've told him what I'm experiencing. I am going this morning to see a new doctor. I know my body and there is something wrong! And the more I read these blogs the more I'm convened that it IS THE MIRENA!!! I'm just so glad that I'm not the only one experiencing these same side effects and that I'm not insane.

I have had mine for over a year now. I initially never thought any of these side effects were related to this device. After gaining weight when I have been exercising and eating the same (sometimes one pound per day), bloating, decreased libido, swollen legs (like when I was pregnant), nausea, and having this horrible neck/shoulder muscle ache (to name the biggest ones), I talked with my OB about this being the cause. She pretty much dismissed it as having anything to do with this. Then, after becoming so frustrated about the weight gain, I decide to research this little thing and I find this!! Oh my goodness. I have scheduled an appointment to remove this tomorrow. It also bothers me not to have a period. I feel like it has been building up for over a year and that is why my stomach is so pregnant like!! I think it works great for some women, and I had a fabulous experience for the first 8 months about. I just think it is important for women to pay attention to their bodies and just because a professional disagrees, does not mean they are correct.

I had Mirena inserted May 1st and had it removed July 30th. Ask me why I waited so long? Because my Ob/Gyn told me the SEVERE NAUSEA I felt could not possibly be from the Mirena because the level of the hormone it released was so low. My doctor suggested that I speak with my Family Practitioner regarding the nausea indicating I may have some type of stomach or GI issue occurring. In addition to the nausea, my hair is so thin, you can see my scalp along my hair line. Upon combing or brushing, I could literally roll my hair up into a ball after pulling it out of the comb or brush because so much of it had fallen out. Did I mention the acne? Oh yes, the acne is good and terrible. My husband went out and purchased ProActive Solution for me. I am hoping that will help.
Since it has only been 4 days since I have had it removed, I feel better but not 100%. I will post again after giving this crap more time to get out of my system!!!

Hi Ladies,
I had mine fitted may 06, i had heavy BLEEDING ND CRAMPING and no other contraception was suiting my body, so i got Mirena. Yes it helped to a certain extent. Later that year, i was still having some lil health issues, turned out i had some food allergies, too much estrogen and no real progesterone and thyroid problem. So this helped. My doctor put me on a natural progesterone cream, which was great, my skin started clearing up and my bleeding started getting some regularity, as i was pretty much bleeding every 2 weeks.
My health this year has gotten worse, excess Odema, acne, tiredness, mood swings, no sex drive, nausea which has always been contant, swelling around my belly etc. I feel horrible, now i also have adrenal fatigue however, I have given lots of thought and am going to get the Mirena removed. My weight is just going up, and all i want to do is be healthy, i exercise and eat well about 80%, so i am hoping that with this being removed, my doc said then i can go back onto my progesterone cream and help regulate my cycle. And also the lack of cycle, constant cramping, then a i get heavy or the odd light cycle. I just want to be happy.
Let me know if anyone else is feeling this way. And with having it removed, how i might feel.
By the way, i am 26 years old, and have no children as yet
xx
Sarah

I never put two and two together... but starting thinking that my mirena's hormones may be causing my issues. I had the mirena inserted a yr ago when I had the copper IUD removed. I told my OB/GYN that I was scared of the pill after trying it in college. Hormone-based birth control doesn't seem to work well for my family. She said it was a tiny dose and wouldn't get in the bloodstream so I shouldn't see side effects. HOWEVER, over the last year I have struggled with my weight. I have always been reallllly lucky. I am 5'8 and weigh about 135 without trying too hard. I have a high metabolism. But, I've started to feel pudgy last few months so have really tightened up my diet. I thought it was because I am getting older (29)...
As far as exercise, I used to be very active (mini-triathlons, 5Ks, sports etc.) but haven't felt like working out this year. Just can't get motivated. Today I was working with a personal trainer. We checked my records from January and I have gained 7 lbs!!! This is after I have really firmed up my diet. I have stopped eating carbs at night and trying to not eat after 7ish. In the past, this would really help my body look its best after a week or two. But, these last few months hasn't seemed to help me at all... Maybe it's the MIRENA?!
In addition, my cycle is about 7 days lator than it used to be. However, I still have the PMS symptoms I used to the week before my period but now they last forever! They start on the 20th and last until my period starts on the 7th!!! I get so irritable with my 5 yr old its ridiculous. It's not fair to her or my husband. I just wanted to share, that even with an athletic body type and a ridiculously high metabolism I am struggling. 2 yrs. ago I could eat 2300 calories w/out exercise, 2500 or more if working out that day. I used to eat as much as my 6'2 husband.

Got mine in August 2006 after my son was born. All was well until the last year. I have had terrible insomnia, sinus infections, back pain, bloating and night time nausea. It is weird, the nausea hits me around 6pm every night like clockwork.
For a while I have been thinking I wanted to get rid of it. Mostly because I have not had a period or anything that even resembles a period since August 2006. I kept on thinking, as convenient as it is, this cannot be good. Mother Nature had our systems set up in a way that we were supposed to have our monthly "cleanse" and rejuvenate every 28 days in between,
I have an appointment August 11 for removal and it can't come fast enough!!! I am prayerful for an earlier cancellation. My husband--God Bless Him--is prayerful to get a wife who finally has a sex drive again and is no longer anxious and moody--oh yeah and REALLY SLEEPY!

I got the Mirena inserted in May 2008, and had it inserted while on my cycle. Everything went fine and then I didn't stop bleeding for 1 1/2 months. I had severe cramping and even headaches. It is now 2 months later and now I am having tingling in my breasts and am bloated like nothing else. I feel like I am 4-5 months pregnant with how bloated I am. I have also noticed I am extremely tired all day every day. I try to please my husband but have no sex drive. I love the idea of not having to worry about any b/c for 5 years but I don't think the side effects are worth it. I have also taken 4 prego tests because at first I thought well is there a possibility. But all the tests were negative. I think it's just the Mirena. Can anyone relate to this?

I had my Mirena put in 2 days ago and I had such severe cramping I almost went to the ER. I feel sick to my stomach and and have shaking hands. I had sex 1 day after having it put in and surprisingly it made my cramps go away, however after a few hours they are back and worse. I found this blog and am seriously considering having it removed already. Does anyone else think I should have it removed?

Just had Mirena inserted in the middle of June 2008. I haven't decided what to think about it yet. I screamed when it was inserted as I have not had any kids yet. Was in severe pain for about a week. And now I have on and off bad pelvic pain, some occasional nausea. The only other thing I noticed is sore muscles and lack of energy. I am lucky I have no period so far. I got off the depo shot after being on it too long and switched to Mirena right away. As for now I am staying on it unless things get worse.

I got the Mirena in Jan 2008. My periods were lasting 2 weeks long (light) every 2 weeks. I had EXTREME fatigue and actually had to go in to take a pregnancy test because my last period came late and I had ALL the effects of pregnancy (had 1 in 2006). I had nausea so bad I actually had to miss work because I felt the urge to be sick, but I couldn't get sick. I had it removed on July 7th, 2008 and felt a difference as soon as I left my doctors office, but now I'm faced with another dilemma. I may be pregnant again! My period never came after I had it removed and have the feeling of being pregnant. My doctor finally told me that my body thought it was pregnant and is going through the motions. I have to wait 2 weeks before I will know if I am or not! I NEVER SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE MIRENA AND DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE ELSE DOES EITHER! I have a hard time remembering to take a pill everyday, but that is much better than the side effects of this thing. I agree with a previous posting, IT IS EVIL!!!!

Well I do have the Mirena. It's been 4 years now. I've hated it since day one. I know I should just get it taken out. I really need to. My periods have never went away. The first year I would bleed 3 months then maybe have 2 months off and so on. It was soo annoying. Now I do have them monthly and they are light but I cramp more now then I ever have. I really didn't have side effects in the beginning. I have them now. I never thought it could be the mirena till I came on here. I'm always dizzy, have headaches, nausea, cramping, anxiety, gain some weight, depression, no energy, ance (never had that before), etc. Ya, even my doctor never told me these things and the brochure never said anything like that either. I would never suggest Mirena to anyone.

I am so relieved to have found this site. I suffer from PCOS (Polycycstic Ovarian Syndrome). I am also morbidly obese, but I have been on a diet for 3 years and I enjoy the diet, sounds funny, but it is true. I lost 30 pounds the first year. Now, I have gained it all back, I can't do anything, I am in so much pain. I have back pain, knee pain, I have swelling in my legs they are so huge (the calves) They have grown three inches in circumference since I started the progesterone therapies. I have pitting edema in both my legs and my hands swell all the time. The only way to reduce the swelling in my hands is to hold my arms over my head for about 15 minutes and that seems to help enough to get my rings off. Mirena was supposed to NOT cause any side effects. Well let me tell you I got them all. The same way I did with the pill form. Only Mirena took longer to enter into my system. I am waiting for my Doctor to get back from vacation and I will be insisting on its removal.
Here is my list:
Pitting Edema in arms and legs
Headaches
Severe abdominal pain
Severe backache
Heart palpitations
Constipation
Lack of appetite
SEVERE WEIGHT GAIN (how can this be, I have been a diet for three years...and I am sticking to it) MY PANTS won't fit anymore.
NO energy
Fatigue
Nightmares
Nausea
Dizziness
Unable to concentrate
Slight double vision (right eye only)
Anger
PIMPLES ( I am 38 for Pete's sake, I didn't have pimples as a teen!)
My Doctor lied. Plain and simple. He told me there would be no systemic side effects. Either Bayer (Mirena) is lying to him, or he is lying to me....either way...I see a class action lawsuit coming if they don't remove this thing. I will kill me if it stays in any longer. I just know it! For those it works for good. I am pleased. For those of us who is don't, I truly feel your pain!

I had my Mirena inserted 3 weeks ago to help me with the pain and extended bleeding I have with two fibroids. I have not had children. My insertion was the most painful experience of my life and the GY had to give me a local before I passed out and screamed the practice down. For women who have not had children, insist on a local and do not experience what I went through. Since the insertion I have good days and bad days, in regards to cramping and really feel that the IUD moves. For a person with fibroids when the IUD moves and touches these, it makes you whole lower back and gut ache. I have had reduced bleeding but the pain associated with it moving outweighs the benefits.I also have nausea associated with the cramps. I go back to my GY this week to see whether it has actually moved and discuss my options. I really feel it is poking me.

I had my Mirena removed three days ago and I already feel like if my life is back. I had Mirena since January of 2006 and I had been feeling like another woman for the last six months...The horrible side affects included: Lower back pain, fatigue, depression, cloudiness, slurred speech, rapid heart rate, thinning hair, high blood pressure and the list goes on.....I can't thank one of my co-workers enough for opening up my eyes to take this thing out of me....Of course the doctor told me that the Mirena had nothing to do with the way I was feeling, but I decided to have it removed anyways. He sent me to do some bloodwork, so I did this morning...He's blaming the way I felt on my thyroid....I'll keep you posted....No matter what.... I am glad the Mirena is out!!!

I am soooo relieved as I have been reading everyone's posts. I am scheduled to get my Mirena out in a few days. I have had mine for almost 10 months, and have had headaches, dizziness, anxiety, lack of energy/concentration, and nausea. I just haven't felt like myself. I am 28 years old, and at times feel like I am 70!! I have had a constant headache for 2 weeks, to the point I have gone through tests to rule out anything serious. It finally clicked in my head the other day that it could be the Mirena, while I was taking a pregnancy test (the nausea is horrible). I will post after it is removed.. hopefully with good news. Thanks to all that took the time to post, good to know that I am not crazy. I pray that the removal helps my headache!! Does anyone else that suffers from side effects, notice an increase at certain times? My headache/nausea always seems worse in the evening.

like most of you im so glad i found this,i got my mirena put in june of 07,i had suspected all along it was my mirena when i started to feel severe cramping,i went to my OBGYN and he told me that it was probably my body getting used to my period again,i hadn't had any problems with the mirena in the beginning but sure enough, i started feeling like i was pregnant all the time, well recently the symptoms have just gotten so unbearable that i googled my symptoms and sure enough "mirena:nausea" came up.i honestly thought i was going insane until now,my husband is happy to know that im not insane also lol.so i am getting this removed a.s.a.p ,after its removed ill repost how im feeling, which couldn't be worse than how i feel now (im sure ill feel a lot better)
-thanks to all of you for posting

I have had the mirena in for almost exactly one year now. I too had bad breakouts, low sex drive, fatigue, mood swings and cramps but they were all less than what I had had on the pill. However, I have LOST weight because the dizzy spells that I have been experiencing lately make me loose my appetite. I also feel like my sense of smell is much more sensitive (especially to gross stuff) near my period.
I would just like to hear from someone who stopped experiencing these adverse effects after having the Mirena removed or someone whose symptoms went away with time before I choose to remove my own.
Every form of birth control has some sort of side-effect, you just have to choose the one with side-effects that you can deal with I guess.

So glad to have found this site - but too late! Another night without sleep - sitting up writing this is helping with my sickness - seems worse when I am lying down. Not good at all. Know the doctors thought it would help but this is like no other period problem I have ever experienced. I usually get the whole thing headaches, mood swings, nausea, now I have all these things all the time! I have only had it in for 10 days and once the period started I just felt like I wanted the Mirena out of me even though I had no idea that I was feeling unwell. Seems like a big coincidence that I should be like this! I am not going mad but it feels like I could do if I don't get a decent night's sleep!
I am going to try and get it removed tomorrow because that might be one way of reversing how I feel because I have never felt so bad in 10 years of PMS. I am a 44 year old woman. Keep up the blog because we need to be there for each other - wish me luck I am crying whilst I am typing this.

I thank you all more than you could ever know. Reading these posts has made me feel so much better and I can now clearly put things together. I now know that I am NOT crazy and my husband was right - this thing is the cause of all my symptoms. The abdominal pain, the headaches, nausea (who wants to feel pregnant all the time???) the terrible skin (I have always been proud of my flawless complexion, even without make-up) the numbness in my fingers and toes, the moodiness and lack of desire to do ANYTHING, much less sex, the 4 month long period I have been having. I have gone from a super-social entertainer to almost a hermit who doesn't want company or to go anywhere, and just wants to sleep all day.
I am having it taken out today in an hour and a half. I pray I get back to normal soon. My marriage and work performance has been suffering terribly since I had this thing put in 4 months ago.
Has anyone else had a problem with the skin on their hands and feet peeling and cracking? This is a new symptom with started last week and is getting worse. Been taking antihistamines (2 types, once daily each) and no help. I knew it would be because I use the same products I have been using for many many years but gave it a shot anyway. My hands hurt so bad. Just curious to see if anyone else had this problem.
Can't wait to get this out.

Thanks everyone for posting on this site. I am a 22 year old mother of two. I had the mirena put in a couple months after my son was born in august of '07. My mother has been telling me she felt like the mirena was the cause of all my "issues" for the past few months. I thought the mirena would be perfect for me seeing as how I didn't remember to take the pill like I was suppose to. The only con I had heard from other women was that it hurt when the mirena was inserted. I felt no pain when the doc inserted it; cramping was minimal the following weeks so I thought I had it made. However.....
Slowly but surely most of the side effects you ladies have complained of began. I've had arthritis and back problems for years but NEVER the kind of scrutinizing pain I have felt since I got the mirena. My hands hurt me so badly I have a hard time feeding my son his baby food and fixing my little girls hair. My back gives out often, especially when I'm picking up or holding one of my children. I lost weight really well after my son was born but since the mirena I have gained 30lbs and am still gaining. I, like so many others, exercise and am a very active mom as well. I don't eat a whole lot but thought my eating must have been the problem so I tried dieting (a low fat diet, the same one I always used to get down to whatever weight I wanted to reach). Unfortunately nothing I do seems to work. The weight won't come off. Talk about repulsion. I don't even want to think about sex; and I have always been one who wanted my husband both emotionally and physically, but not lately. I have a lot of fluid which adds to the number I see on the scale. I stay bloated. My hair is falling out so bad the drains in our showers stay clogged. I have had more migraines the last few months than I have had in my life. My mind is so fuzzy, I can't seem to think a lot of the time. I stay sooooo tired. My moods are all over the place. The nausea I have had the last couple of months makes me feel pregnant again. All of our side effects are listed in the mirena info pamphlet we get from the doc when it's inserted. It's ludicrous that any doc would say that the mirena ISN'T the cause of these symptoms. The next time a doc tells you mirena can't cause these side effects PUT THAT PAMPHLET IN HIS FACE AND ASK HIM IF HE CAN READ!!!! The pamphlet does say that only 5% of women have these side effects, but, HELLO, someones in that 5%. I told my mother for the longest time the mirena was doing me no harm and that her concerns were nothing. Then I found this site and now owe my mother an apology. Mirena is a good choice for some women but not for others. Thank you ladies for all of your input. God Bless you all. I'll be praying God's hand is upon you all.

I have felt the worst I've ever felt with this and didn't even think about it until lately. We got it put in in August of 2007 because my OB thought birth control would help stop the extra bleeding I was still having 3 months after my daughter was born and I went with the IUD because I'm not very good at taking the pill every day at the same time, etc. I've been glad that the bleeding stopped, but didn't put all my crumby symptoms together until now. I finally realized that the only constant with everything different I've been trying to stop the symptoms has been mirena. I have had the worst headaches (migraine type at least 3 days out of every week), cramping like none other, severe mood swings, nausea, and dizzy spells that put me on the floor. I have fallen down at work because of dizzy spells, not cleaned my house for a week at a time because I felt like I had the flu every time I tried to move, not been able to work as a medical transcriptionist because my head was throbbing so bad, and had break downs of crying because I feel like all my kids do is make me angry, along with my husband telling me that things need to change because I am always cranky with him. I have never had a problem with sex drive, to the point of being overzealous to my husband sometimes, until now. I have to make myself do anything and it feels like the most awful thing since the first time. I've suffered depression in the past, but never like the deep depressions that I've gone into lately. It's hard to believe so much power to change me can come from something so little and seemingly harmless.

Hi ladies,
I have had Mirena out for a week. I feel better. "Nyrek" posted yesterday about Bayer and the information on their website. here is the web address: ******
Scroll down and look for Mirena. Hit the first PDF for Product Monograph. She is absolutely right!
Quite upsetting to know that within 2 YEARS I may be able to get pregnant! I don't have that much time to spare. My little girl will be turning 5 at the end of May. It is now or never. I hope that I was able to get rid of much of the hormone from my body. I have been feeling way better. No crazy fatigue. Nothing. Some nausea (my period) and some joint pain but I had those before Mirena. Not as severe now. i have Fibromyalgia. Hopefully that goes away too.
There is a huge difference now compared to before. My body has been adjusting and coming back to its normal state. It is amazing! I am really ticked to have read that the hormone enters the bloodstream in 15 min. I thought it was a localized thing. It explains the extreme bloating and weight gain those weeks after insertion. Plus acne. Then I lost weight once the anxiety and depression set in. No wonder we are all messed up! Not cool at all!
If you all need my account for that class action suit, let me know. They make this thing out to be so wonderful when all it does is make you a walking wreck. Absolutely scary. It does work against pregnancy but at what cost?
One side effect that always got me was that I felt these spasms in my uterus, much like the ones I got when I was near the end of my pregnancy. It was crazy! At times I thought the thing had failed and I was truly pregnant. Anyone else had these weird spasms or cramping up? I still urinate a lot. Still feel some pressure down there but not like before. I still think it is my period as I'm at the end of the cycle. I have this bad feeling that although they say the hormones leave at half life, each woman reacts differently. While I felt relief on Day 1 of removal, others have taken longer. Just how long does it truly take? Especially when it has wreaked so much havoc in our bodies? I hope it does not affect my ability to conceive. That is definitely not nice!
Well, if anyone could let me know about the weird spasms, i would appreciate it! If any of you have had a baby after Mirena, how long did it take you to conceive???
As always, Good Luck, Ladies!

I had the mirena inserted in December of 07 and didn't realize that I was having some serious issues with this thing until about 4 months after insertion, my weight would not budge, I stayed at 220 for 4 months and I walked 90 minutes a day and am eating very healthy, some weeks I'd lose 3 pds and the following week would gain them right back, this happened for the entire 4 months, I didn't think anything of it until I did some online searching and found many woman complaining about weight gain with Mirena and other horrible side effects. I was having panic attacks and was always extremely emotional, I was also very bloated all the time, my husband looked at me one day and said you are exercising and eating healthy, why does your belly look so big? So, that was it, I knew it was the mirena. He also noticed my facial acne, which I never had in the 7 years he's been with me. I finally had the mirena removed on 4/14/08 and instantly found relief, I mean, when I say instantly, you may think I'm crazy, but it was immediate relief, I felt so much better in a matter of seconds. I did read somewhere that the mirena after it's inserted goes into your blood after 15 minutes so, not sure how true that is, but I believe it, after all I went through. I lost 1 pd in one day after the mirena was removed, and now 5/7/08 I've lost 9 pds so far. Not only was it a relief for the weight, I've also noticed a major change in my mood, I was always cranky and started to get nausea and felt bloated and just miserable all the time, my acne is clearing up, my hair also stopped falling out, which was another problem I had which I believe was a major side-effect, everyone said that it was because I just recently had a baby and it was normal, but after a while it was just falling all over the place so now I'm actually seeing the difference and my hair is starting to grow back in. I'm so glad I had it removed!!

I don't know if seeing all these posts help me or scare the crap outta me even more (none the less very helpful), I have no insurance and really want to get my IUD removed. I had it inserted when my daughter was 8 weeks old that was about 11 months ago. I have had nothing but problems, severe cramping, nausea, periods that last a whole month, one month it will be icky brownish discharge with a lil blood here and there, I will stop for about 2 weeks and get it again this time lasting about 3 weeks then i will go about 6 weeks and have it again this time with severe cramping and bleeding for a whole month straight. then i may not have it again for 6 weeks etc... I have really nasty blood clots that look very fleshy. I also have had very thick yellowish stinky discharge everyday i don't have my period ( I have NEVER smelt this bad) I feel like im losing my mind Im so absent minded i forget the simplest things, my arms and legs go numb and tingly, my hair is falling out in clumps, im extremely moody and very impatient. and the tiredness is really starting to bother me, no matter how much i try to stay awake its almost impossible, i literally need to take a nap every 3 hours it seems like just to function...I feel like im falling apart. Has anyone else had a lot of these symptoms? And what should I do about getting it taken out....I don't qualify for Medicaid so I was wondering if i should just go into the hospital the next time the pain gets bad and see if they will remove it any advice will be helpful! And good luck to anyone else going through problems with this IUD.

Like most of you state in your posts.........I cannot begin to describe how relieved I am to have found this site. I honestly thought I was losing my mind. I had Mirena placed in December '06. It was uncomfortable during the actual procedure, but not too bad. Then within a day or two I was in severe pain and bleeding like crazy with severe lower back pain. I was told to take ibuprofen and allow my body to "adjust". I went for my follow-up ultrasound and the placement looked fine although I was still bleeding like crazy and very uncomfortable. After several more calls they brought be back in for another ultrasound, told me that my uterus must have gotten bacteria in it during placement and that I had an infection. They sent me home on antibiotics and pain medicine. I bled pretty regularly for 6 months straight accompanied by lower back pain, fatigue, and headaches. Finally the bleeding let up only to be followed by a multitude of other nasty side effects. Depression, anxiety, fogginess, forgetfulness (severe), waking up with headaches every morning, nausea (to the point that I can't tell you how many pregnancy tests I've taken), weight change (redistribution, thicker waist, tummy, and hips even though actual number only changed by about 5 pounds), feeling swollen and bloated when I wake up in the morning, NO libido whatsoever and feel like crying during sex because it's nearly impossible to reach orgasm (this has never been a problem previously), hair loss (becoming more noticeable over time), dandruff, boil-like acne on my face and back, dry eyes and blurred/double vision, chronic yeast infections and dryness in that area too. The list goes on and on. I went to three different doctors and had tons of bloodwork done, all came back normal (thyroid, hormones etc....) I was told over and over that it couldn't be the Mirena. HA! How can this many women be delusional? I called last week and got an appointment for May 20 to get it removed. After reading this forum my husband called the doctor himself and I don't know what he said, or how he managed to do it.........but I'm going in tomorrow morning at 10:20 am to get it removed and you better believe I'm going in armed with this website and others I've found. Physicians need to be more aware of this! Even if it's not common, it's miserable for the 1 in 1,000 woman who gets the worst of the side effects. It's literally ruining my life and my marriage. It's impossible to be a good wife and mother when you feel terrible everyday.

4 days post removal. I had a bout of nausea today along with some pretty severe abdominal cramping. I have been having some leg cramping too. Has this happed to others? I have had some light bleeding but it stopped today. I had it for 2 days. I feel like I am on a hormonal roller coaster all day. Feeling good, then bad. Back and forth. Please tell me it gets better. I know it does it is just difficult. I have not felt anywhere near as foggy and not as much anxiety/panic attacks. Thanks.

Hi, I'm 40. had mine fitted end Dec. have had one bleed which lasted 3 weeks now due again but just having aching, ibs and nausea probs with cramping when moving out a chair or exercising.Last time i had that I was pregnant! Definitely have felt lightheaded, vertigo feeling and even visited an osteopath as thought it was my neck as had had lot of tension. Friend has one and said she feels fine & loves it! Got to give it 6 months she said. So I wait in hope that i will feel better. Don't miss the heavy periods, so thats a bonus! Have put on just under a stone in weight so that is annoying. All round tum area. think it probably affects us all slightly differently and all doctors have differing opinions. I will give it a bit longer, but no one should put up with feeling awful all the time. Listen to your body! thanks Jo

I had mirena inserted 18 months ago. I did not really have many problems in the beginning. Just some nausea and bleeding for several months.
it was not until 3-4 months ago when i started having multiple problems. I have horrible back and leg pain, joint pain, ache all the time, extremely tired with no energy. I can be walking and get so dizzy and light headed that i feel like i am going to hit the ground.i have horrible migraines. I did have the before, but now i have to take medication a lot more frequent. I also have no sex drive whatsoever. That is a big problem for me. I just recently had several blood tests for several things included thyroid and arthritis that were negative. I was baffled until i stumbled onto this site. I never even thought about it being the mirena. When i reported the severe nausea in the beginning to my MD, she stated that the hormone level released was so low that it would not cause problems like that. I was thinking with eliminating all the other problems, maybe what i am going through is hormonal. I also have been exercising like crazy for a couple months and have not shed a pound and the aching and joint pain is so bad that i have to relax after walking on the treadmill. I am calling my MD today to see about getting it removed.

So glad I found this website!!! I have Mirena for 1year and four months. My period stopped like six months ago. I have experienced increased anxienty and for three months already almost panick attacks, heart palpitations, nausea like morning sickness, and developed high blood pressure related to the anxiety. Never thought the Mirena has anything to do with it but I will call my doctor tomorrow to have it removed as soon as possible. I had never been on hormonal contraceptives so did'nt know what side effects i could develop.

I couldn't agree more with most of these posts -- horrible side effects, and my doctor says the side effects couldn't be coming from the Mirena. But interestingly enough, the side effects only began after Mirena went in. Awful fatigue, crankiness, weight gain, huge increase in appetite. Also, waves of nausea here and there. Can't wait to get it out!!!

I am so glad I found this web site. I had Mirena before for three years with no problems at all, I loved it. So after I had my daughter I had another one put in around oct 2007. I thought it was fine and latley I have been feeling as if I was going to start a period and nothing has happened. So I started looking up mirena realated problems and up came this page. I seriouly thought I have been going crazy my biggest issue is my moods. I will have incresdible bursts of rage (wich is not me at all) for no reason at all. Along with the anger Other symptoms I have are, severe fatigue, bloating, cravings, acne, mood swings, dizziness, memory loss, painful intercourse, depression, nausea, weight gain, severe backaches and cramping. I NEVER put all of these things together with merina I thought it was all just my body getting back to normal after having a baby. I am absolutly dumbfounded. It all makes so much sense. I am going to go and get it removed and my husnband is going to get a vasectomy. I know this works for some people but it is good to know I am not alone in this craziness.

Finding this web site has been a big eye opener me, I knew that what was going on with my body couldn't be normal, but didn't want to admit it. I am a 27 yr old mother of 2 that can't use BC due to liver issues. I worked in an OB/Gyn office for 5 years and never heard any horror stories about either one of the IUDs. My doctor/coworker suggested the COPPER IUD which was placed in 2000 after the birth of my 2nd son. After doing so, I dealt with 2 years of extremely heavy bleeding, cramping, migraines..... So, my doctor then decided to replace the copper with the Mirena. I had the copper taken out and the Mirena put in last March (07). 2 months after that, I was taken to the hospital with excruciating pelvic pain. To find out I had a ruptured cyst. This had NEVER happened to me before and after the surgery my health has gone down hill. I now have breakouts all over my body, nausea, swollen hands and feet, 20 lbs extra, fatigued, increased perspiration, moody, I have moments of rage, tired ALL the time, emotional, and constant pelvic pain. Not bad enough to go the dr, but enough to notice it the entire day. I have moments when all I do is sleep and others when I can't sleep at all.
The GREAT upside to the Mirena has been that I no longer get migraine headaches and I don't get periods at all. It sounds great, but the negative side effects are taking their toll on me. I have to take it out in hopes to regain myself. I don't recognize myself anymore. Physically or emotionally. Good luck to all the women that are on it or considering it. I hope that this brings insight to anyone that has questions.
I have made an appt at the end of this month to have it removed.

hi, i've had the mirena in for about 14 months. The first 8 months i had constant spotting, nausea, vertigo (dizzy spells), bloating, weight gain and pimples. The spotting has settled down. i still get a period every now and again. the last one i had was really heavy with clotting. I often get sharp pains and cramping in my uterus but no bleeding. I have also had thrush for the last 3 months that wont go away. has anyone else had thrush on the mirena? My back pain is really bad. particularly my left hip. i haven't been able to sleep on my left side for over a year now. Don't know what to do!!

very bad experience with Mirena that after having it for 1 year (inserted at age of 43, taken out at 44) it looks like caused me an early menopause at age of 45. not one medic looking at the causes of my nausea, pains has thought that mirena might be the cause. Only after having it removed all these symptoms have calmed down but otherwise always punctual periods (before the insertion of Mirena) have not returned ....would not recommended it anyone!! also the Gynea told me that has some other cases with problematic Mirena...
