I've had the Mirena for over 3 years now, I've been going to the doctor for some pelvic pains and she referred me to the obgyn whom i saw yesterday i go back in and see him at the end of the month but he is almost convinced that my pelivc pain which worsens with sex is being caused by my mirena. is there anyone else who has had this problem?? my pcp seems to think that the pains are more related to endometriosis.

Hi, I have a Mirena IUD and am currently trying to find someone else who has the problem I've been having. I have always had a moderate period that lasts 3 days. Always, since the day it started, and it has always been as regular as a clock. After having this IUD inserted (which by the way the OBGYN had no interest in making a follow up appointment to check on it at any time) every time I had sex for the first three months it felt like the thing was stabbing me in the ovaries every time my husband...well you get the picture. Once that went away(hopefully it hasn't caused me to become infertile) Now I am getting my period for a week to a week and a half every two weeks! I have seen a million ppl on the internet saying no period after they had their IUD, so why am i having more of them for a longer amount of time?????

I have had Mirena for about three months and I want it out now. I have had stomach cramps everyday, headache everyday, bleeding for no reason (all the time). My hair is coming out in clumps after my showers, and I have started to have blurry vision. Sometimes I feel like I cant even focus on something. My back hurts all the time and I feel sick every day. I have an appointment to "talk" to the doctor about it, and when I go there I will tell him to remove it then and there. If he doesn't, I will make it known that I am not leaving until he does, or I will take it out myself right then and there!! That's how sure I am that all this is from this poisonous thing. I also have had a short fuse and feel so fancy all the time. I would not recommend this to anyone. Plus, isnt it illegal for them NOT to list all of the side effects in the brochure about Mirena, because Canada does; the US does not!! Good luck to all of you.

Hi all again! I posted on Sept. 15th and 19th and I'm here again! Since I had my Mirena removed, I've had some heavy bleeding which has started to go away. I started to take Slow FE, an iron supplement because yesterday I was ready to drive myself to the ER - I felt lousy - drained to the bone and ready to pass out. After listening to my boyfriend, I went home, gave my kids something to do, and rested for a few hours in bed.
Later on I ate dinner and started to feel better. This morning I really started to feel more like myself (!). I have some bleeding, but it's turning brownish, like toward the end of a period. I am going to the OBGYN who delivered my kids (different doc's ofce than the one where I had the Mirena inserted); I want to get another opinion about the thickness of my uterine lining, the sono report, etc. just to rule out anything serious. My boyfriend thinks that I may have had a miscarriage without realizing I was pregnant (ironically, I was feeling like i had eight years ago when I had a miscarriage and a D&C and didn't realize it until he asked how I had felt then and compared it to now). I would need bloodwork to determine any hormone levels at this point; I'd just like to be reassured that it's not cancer.
Ladies - listen to your bodies. Yes, there is such a thing as allowing your body to adjust and some women haven't had the side effects which a lot of us are writing about; just don't overlook anything that is telling you "this is not normal, this is not natural." Trust your instincts and yourselves; you'll know if it's for you or not. And for crying out loud: if you want it out - insist upon getting it out - don't be coerced into doing something that you don't want to to.

Hi - I posted a couple of days ago (around the 15th). I had the Mirena taken out yesterday. Yes, still bleeding. Yes, with medium to large-sized clots. Oh, I forgot this side affect also - for some time when I had it in, I had a tinging or numb-like feeling passing through my top lip - I thought I was going crazy at first but I realized it had been happening more and more and it wasn't my imagination. I've had this also since it was removed; not as often though.
Could it be that we are the "3%" that has a problem with this IUD??!! I am following up with a second opinion with another OBGYN because I was concerned that the radiological tech said my uterine lining was "very thick" and my friend's mom (who is a nurse) asked right away if the doctor was doing a D & C...(!) Any suggestions or ideas or comments???

I'm 18 and had my first son June 4, 08; I got the mirena put in late june 08. This is the worst choice I've ever made health wise. It started when it was inserted - severe cramping like I was having a miscarriage or something. They made no mention of this before hand. I started having spotting and constant light cramping since the day I had it put in for the first 3 weeks. When the time comes for my regular period I get severe cramps that nothing relieves. I've used ALL the ibuprofen and Norco pills that have been prescribed to me in 2 weeks. I'm out of all OTC ibuprofen even though it offers no relief. I called the OBGYN and they say the cramping is normal and just to take two ibuprofens (the ones I had which were 300 mg each) EVER 6 HOURS.
When I went in for a check up, they said it was normal and it would hurt for the first 2-3 months. I then told them that I took all my prescribed Ibu. and then moved to the norco which seemed to be the only relief as I've tried warm baths, Alieve, Advil, Motrin, sleeping in different ways, hot and cold compresses and nothing. He offered to prescribe me ANOTHER form of Ibuprofen as if he didn't hear me mention I have been taking 600 mgs of Ibu EVERY 6 hours since I had it in. Then he told me all he could say was to try Noproxem and that it was just Alieve. He then just told me as I left pissed off to give it more time.
I'm now passing big clots and bleeding in shades of brown and bright red, have severe cramping bleeding through OVERNIGHT maxi pads that you can supposedly wear for up to 8 hours. But he says everything is normal and just give it time. I'm down to begging my mom for her prescription Hydrocodone and she's beginning to think I have a drug dependency problem even if I go for a few days without mention or thought of one at all. Because of this I'm in pain all the time, losing my hair, constantly tired, depressed because there's nothing I can do for the pain, and I'm gaining back all my pregnancy weight. I'm also a pain to be around because I now have severe mood swings that I didn't even have when I was pregnant. And now I have to wait to get my medicaid again to have it removed. As of right now the cramping is so bad I'm on the edge of going to the ER to get it taken out.
The commercials are a lie and every user comment of mirena are just like mine or worse. I would not recommend this to ANYONE (unless I hated them enough). Mirena is a form of torture.

Hi! I JUST had the Mirena put in Yesterday...Tues. And within one hour I started to feel foggy, light headed and crazy! I started getting a pressure headache. Being the last patient of the day, I knew the office was closed. So I looked online and found you all. I am horrified at this point! I couldn't sleep last night at all! I was so nauseous and had the poops. (sorry, tmi) Today I feel full of anxiety and my heart is racing. I feel like I'm on drugs or drunk! My head is still pounding. I kept calling my OBGYN and didn't talk to him until about 2 hrs ago. He said none of these symptoms are from the Mirena. So I hear that is most of the Docs words around here! He suggested I give it more time and call him in a few days and if I want it out, he will take it out. Well the thing is, I am ready to pull it out myself! I feel like I'm crazy! Seriously! I don't know what to do! I called my PCP and they refuse to take it out b/c they didn't put it in. They suggested going to the ER. Well my insurance for sure won't cover that!! So what do I do? I feel like I'm going crazy and no one will listen! We are moving to Italy in a month nd I need this resolved AWAY before then! Any advice will help! I just know when I call my doc, he will try to make me keep it in! What do I do?? HELP! Thanks for being here! Wish I had found you before. I am really good about researching things and I didn't with this. I trusted my doc! The other thing is I hear a ton of you have gained weight!!! I JUST had a full tummy tuck June 5th and I freaking better not gain weight!! LOL I want this out!! Calling my doc tomorrow and demanding he take it out. Has anyone had a doc refuse taking it out and if so, what is our recourse? It's our body right?? Thanks again for listening to me gripe!!! ;) God Bless!!

Hello all i just had to post this. I had the Merina put in On June 12of 2008. I thought at first this was going to be the best thing for me because i have fibroids. Well 1 week after the insert it all started. Constant heavy Bleeding , Pelvic Pain and ect. Of Course i go to my OBGYN and they thought i was crazy and did not take it out. So i went to my Regular Doctor because my symptoms were getting worse. I started having migraine headaches and i just was feeling so sick along with the heavy clotting bleeding. I was to upset that it really wasn't anything he could do but treat me for my headache. Ok, that didn't work. My headaches got worst and I ended up in the Emergency Department with a severe headache trembles and etc. They took all kinds of test and i kept telling them that im having Major problems , know one was listening. I started having bad Anxiety attacks and Panic Attacks. This never happened a day in my life. My doctor had to put me on medication to control my anxiety attacks. Finally i am going to the OBGYN to get this thing out. While im there i am going to give them a piece of my mind as well. When patients are having severe problems , it should be considered an emergency to take it out. Everyone's Heomoglobin isnt low but experience other side effects. I am suffering really bad and trying to work a full time job as well plus married with 2 Kids. Hell i thought i was loosing my mind. I cant wait until 08/21 to get this removed!
Thanks for reading

Im glad i found this site!! I had my mirena inserted June 19, 2008. Its my first time to use contraceptives, and i choose Mirena, at first i was in doubt, but i said, im gonna give it a try, so i did. Im 31 years old, had a baby boy last March 3, 2008. The insertion was ok i don't have any problem.
Then my period came....usually my period last 4 days or so...some of the side effects of mirena is spotting ..so i thought 1 week the most..my period last almost 7 weeks and smells like a rusty metal, it wasn't heavy bleeding but light bleeding, sometimes it gets dark brown, like its going away, then become light red again, on and off, it was

I had the Mirena put in May'08. I've noticed increased acne, cramping in my legs, and spotting. I am also dealing with symptoms of bladder infections, however, there is no infection. My OBGYN says there is no correlation between the Mirena and my bladder problems, however, the urologist said that the Mirena could cause problems to other organs around the uterus (including the bladder). He stated it could be traumatic to our bodies, causing muscles in our pelvic area to tighten, nerve damage, etc. My OB diagnosed me with Interstitial Cystitis, a disease of the bladder lining that is without a cure, but my urologist didn't buy off on this and so now I'm having other tests done to make sure it's not bladder cancer, etc. Again, my urologist believes it's related to the Mirena. All I know is that I didn't have bladder problems until I had the Mirena inserted, which was the most painful experience aside from giving birth to my children! After reading the postings on this website, I'm definitely removing this device from my body ASAP! Good luck to all of you women who have had similar experiences. I pray that our bodies will return to some sense of normalcy.

I suffered with pre-menopausal symptoms for 2 years before having the Mirena inserted in May 2007. My symptoms included bad menstrual cramping, heaving bleeding, hot flashes, night sweats, moodiness and lack of libido. But since having the Mirena all those symptoms have gone away. My OBGYN is using it for Hormone Replacement because I am too young (34 yrs old) to have menopause. I felt a lot better after about 3 months, I still have some side effects like hand numbness (mostly when I wake up in the morning or at night). Every couple of months I have some mild break through bleeding and I have PMS symptoms before it happens. I would have gone crazy without Mirena. I do have 1 symptom that I haven't heard anyone mention. Increased bladder infections, I don't know if this is caused by the Mirena or maybe its something else. If anyone has had this symptom can you post it?

Hi! I had mirena after my first child in March. Everything was going great so I thought. I spotted like the doc said I would. The 28 and 29th of July I was in the hospital for fever, chills, severe headaches, back pain, neck pain, & stomach cramps. They did blood work, cultures, X-ray. & ultrasound come to find out it was Mirena the little piece of shit plastic. I called my doctor and told her and she told me it's infected because I have caught a sexual transmitted disease. That would be hard to do seeing that I haven't had sex in 1 YEAR!! I was pissed that she would say that when I told her I haven't and she got rude and said that. I have no reason to lie about it, but when the dad leaves and you have the child I don't have time for nothing but her. My OBGYN doesn't have kids what does she know! I advise no one to get mirena it's not worth it. I am still recovering taking meds. The DOC at the hospital said my body just rejected it!

Hello!
I've had the Mirena since October 2007. I've had all three of my kids close together, and they were all c-sections. My OBGYN HIGHLY recommended i wait at least 2 years to get pregnant again, if we were to have anymore children. At first my experience with Mirena went OK, but its only recently i've been experiencing some of the same symptoms as other women on this site. I've been having more and more anxiety issues, my hair is coming out at a steady rate, none existent sex drive, and lately it feels as if i have morning sickness! (I know i'm not pregnant, but i wake up and i feel sick.) I'm trying to lose weight, but i seems to hit a point where i can't LOSE ANYTHING. I've been watching what i eat, taking walks, going to the gym when i can. Trust me, with my three kids, THAT IS exercise. When i have my monthly cycles, it seems as if they last FOREVER! They're not really heavy, but they seems to last for up to 2 weeks! Anyway, my moods can turn at the drop of a hat, and it seems like i'm yelling at my kids A LOT. My husband pointed it out, and i feel guilty! I have an appt. tomorrow with my doctor to get it taken out. I'm not the best with the pill, but if taking this IUD out means these side effects going away, then i'm all for it.
So i'm hoping everything will lighten up after tomorrow!!!

I had my Mirena put in a month ago. My OBGYN said it was a much better option than the pill, which I had taken for more than 10 years before I had my son four years ago. My body didn't react the same way to the pill anymore so I thought I would try an IUD. The insertion was awful! I had severe cramping and severe faintness immediately afterward. It took about 5 days for the cramping to go away and I got a light period 2 1/2 weeks later which lasted over 5 days (I suddenly felt that THAT was how it prevented pregnancy...it's hard to get knocked up if you're bleeding all the time!) I've had almost consistent low grade cramping ever since...it always feels like those first couple days before my period starts...kinda achely like you know it's coming. What is now starting to bother me is the acne that's COVERING my face. They're tiny little bumps and my face is always greasy. I'm 36 and I haven't had an acne problem in almost 20 years. Now I'm reading about all the problems with weight wain that other women have posted about. I gain about 10 pounds with the pill and that's exactly why I wanted to try the IUD!! I have a hard enough time keeping my weight in check and the idea of gaining more is enough to make me cry right now! I am blown away by the number of posts on this site and I wish I had found it before I had it put in. The information that I was given didn't mention most of these complaints and I know that if I call my doctor she'll tell me to give it a few months (the same advice she gave me with the three different birth control pills I tried). I'm 99% sure that I don't want anymore children but I don't want to commit to a more permanent form of birth control yet. I hope this post helps anyone who's considering an IUD...I would NOT recommend it!!!

Wow! I've done a lot of reading post Mirena and wish I had spent the time before instead of just relying on the pamphlet from the Dr's office.
I made it a whole 3 days!
Insertion was fine but it should have raised a flag when the Dr said "oops, it slipped out, hang on one more minute". I felt fine all that day (Wednesday). By Thursday cramping was pretty intense, vomitting, diarrhea, low grade fever, lower back pain, headache, rapid heartbeat. Called Dr "Oops" & told me I had a stomach bug, symptoms not from Mirena. Friday sucked, stomach problems went away but everything else just got worse.
By Saturday I was immobile on the couch, no other way to describe it than to say it just friggen hurt! Dr "Oops" closed on the weekend so I went to the hospital. ER doc couldn't find the threads to take it out and didn't have the "magic tool" required to fish them out. His solution was take antibiotics for possible infection and a narcotic pain reliever (3 mo old little boy at home, narcotics not an option) and have it removed on Monday.
Being stubborn, I insisted on seeing the on-call OBGYN who was upstairs waiting to deliver a baby. He was kind enough to come down and fish the strings out without this "magic tool". The relief was immediate, especially given that the Mirena had turned 90 degrees inside me. I'm lucky it did no damage. This Dr explained that the symptoms should not have been that bad had it been in correctly.
I've been bleeding heavy with clotting since Sunday, cramping is nothing compared to what it was. Think I have a yeast infection brewing from antibiotics, just to add insult to injury. I am just glad to have it out!
I would have to rate Mirena up there in the top 5 most unpleasant experiences of my life. Please do your homework and weigh your options before trying Mirena. The pamphlet from the doctor's office doesn't tell the half of it. And if you do decide to have it, consider having it done on a Monday to give yourself a few days to see how you like it before the weekend arrives. I'm sure having it come out of place is rare, but I'm proof it can happen. Good Luck to all :)

I posted on here a few weeks ago complaining about my excessive hair loss to the point of seeing through my hair. I went to my obgyn after reading this forum. He said he is not surprised....that anything containing progestin causes hair loss. Also any traumatic experience....to expect hair loss to start from 3-6 months post trauma....I had a baby, a mirena, marital separation, and 2 d&c, along with a bad delivery and severe blood loss, ALL in a matter of 4 weeks. So, it could be all or one....either way he was not scoffing at my claim of the mirena being the culprit of the hair loss. We agreed to give it a few weeks and see if the loss slowed, if not I will return to have it removed......I also put on a quick 10+ ponds which I am not happy about, but my appetite is raging. I am still breastfeeding too, so I don't know which one is the cause. I also lost hair and gained weight last baby....so who knows. I will keep everyone posted.

I have Mirena for little over a year. My body fells tired and pregnant. I didn't gain weight but didn't lose the baby fat either. I am going to the OBGYN in the next hour for the removal. I am scared for the results that I will get right after, ( like heavy painful bleeding)... but my hope is not to have this thing hurt my uterus or have a pregnancy that could be complicated for the use of the iud.I will keep a diary here, hope to help somebody. Please, girls, wish me luck

I AM HORRIFIED AFTER READING ALL OF THESE! JUST TODAY SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT MY EXCESSIVE HAIR LOSS IS PROBABLY DUE TO THE IUD. I CAME HOME AND GOOGLED IT AND LANDED ON THIS SITE. I SERIOUSLY HAIR NOTICEABLE BALD SPOTS NOW. MY HAIR COMES OUT IN HAND FULLS ALL THE TIME ALL DAY. SHOWERS ARE A NIGHTMARE. THE SITE IN THE DRAIN IS NAUSEATING. WHEN I PULL MY HAIR BACK IT LOOKS LIKE I HAVE RECEDING HAIR LINE AND YOU CAN SEE MY SCALP THROUGH WHAT HAIR I HAVE LEFT. I HAD EXTREMELY THICK DULL HAIR BEFORE. I IGNORED THE OTHER SYMPTOMS AND FOCUSED ON THE HAIR LOSS THINKING IT WAS RELATED TO POST PARTUM AND STRESS.....LOOKS LIKE IT MAY BE THIS IUD THEY CALL MIRENA MAKING ME BALD. I AM CALLING MY OBGYN ON MONDAY.

Hi, I had mirena placed two months ago after giving birth to my 3rd child. I wish I would've seen this site before I make my decision of using Mirena. My first symptom was chest pain and it was followed by heart palpitations, lower back pain, dizziness, heart burn, etc...... I asked my obgyn and he said "IS NOT MIRENA" the cause of your symptoms. I had to see a Cardiologist because I felt that I was going to die in any minute from a heart attack. My Cardiologist said you are to young to have heart problems. I had an ekg, blood work, echo, and stress test done. nothing seems to be wrong with me "Medical terms" you are fine. But I knew something was wrong, I got my own diagnosis "MIRENA" was the cause of all my symptoms. I have it removed about two weeks ago and I finally feel normal again. No more side effects. Please ladies do your own research really good before using this or any other medication that your doctor gives you and please DON'T trust your Dr. 100%, they are not always right. Good luck to all of you.

Hi all,
I have spent the last 2 days on the Internet reading about Mirena; as a matter of fact, I had mine removed 2 days ago. For the last 10 months, my life has been horrible. I had the Mirena inserted in November of 2007, I was also coming out of a divorce, so I (and my doctor) was attributing my extreme depression, anxiety attacks to it. I started noticing that my hair was falling out and it just kept getting worse and worse. I went to see my doctor again and she said I had anemia (I was having very heavy periods and bleeding through my periods). Doctor said anemia causes hair loss. I went through different tests, saw a dermatologist, I always mentioned I had the Mirena, but no one seem to relate that to anything. I actually went on the Mirena site a couple of times, but the side effects listed there were very mild so I discarded the thought that the Mirena was causing my depression and my hair loss. There is no mention whatsoever about hair loss. Months went by, I kept seeing different doctors since my hair loss was getting worse and worse, my once beautiful, thick hair had become extremely thin, I have two holes on my scalp. I continued to bleed heavy and my ob/gyn said to give it some more time. My life was a complete mess, going to work was a struggle, dealing with my kids was a struggle, some days I would just lay in bed and cried for hours, I started to believe that my life had no purpose or reason. I was truly in agony, I am sure those of you who have gone through this know exactly what I mean. Anyway, I can't believe in all this months it never occurred to me to google mirena and hair loss....or mirena and suicidal thoughts, etc., etc. I thank you all for sharing your stories and I hope we can figure out a way to let all of those mirena users out there suffering that the answer to their agony is simply to have the Mirena removed. I look forward to my new life, new hair. It has been 2 days and I don't know if it is a state of mind, but I feel so much better already.
Thx

I had my Mirena inserted about 4 months ago and I have felt like I'm falling apart ever since. I have experienced the following symptoms: numbness/tingling in arms and legs, EXTREME fatigue, depression, anxiety, acne on back, my hair is thinner, bloating, sore stomach, lower back pain, etc. Most recently, I have had a lot of heartburn and my voice is kind of hoarse. Also, when I went to the doctor, they did a urine test and found that I have a trace of blood in my urine. Along with this I feel like I need to pee all the time, but I seem to have no bladder infection. I am fed up with this device and feeling like total crap all of the time. I have no energy and can't seem to get enough sleep. The only thing good about this thing is that I don't have a period. Of course, my doctor swears all of these symptoms can't possibly be due to the Mirena, but I don't see how it could all be coincidental. Please let me know if anyone else is experiencing these weird symptoms like the bladder issue or the heartburn/hoarseness.

Me again...another update...and another question.
So I am now 10 days post-removal. Still no weight loss and still have the acne. My skin appeared to have been clearing up a few days back...then I'm right back where I started. My moodiness seemed to improve...then I woke up this morning just as emotional as ever. I continue to work out like crazy...and on top of 6 evening workouts every week, I also try to get up early and have added in additional morning workouts 2-3 times per week. And still not 1 pound lost. I still look 6 months pregnant. My legs still get swollen in the evenings, but not as severe as they had. And I still feel like I was hit by a bus: I just ache all over, all the time. I had the one period which started on day 2 and ended on day 5...nothing since. So I contacted the previous caregivers I had seen, my midwives, and explained to them what has been going on since last year. (This is the group that first put me in touch with my current OBGYN due to some irregular paps I had several years ago.) So the nurse listens and agrees that my concerns are valid but, as they are a "sister-site" with the jerk GYN, she recommended to call a completely different practice for a 2nd opinion consult. So now I have an appointment with another GYN...but not until the middle of June.
My question is that in reading these posts, it seems like most of you who have this removed are noticing drastic improvement and results within days and weeks. I know this may take time to improve totally over the next few months, but I feel like I should have at least seen something get better by 10 days after! Is anyone else out there having no relief even after removal? I'm almost getting paranoid to the point of wondering if he even took it out of me!
Sorry to vent...thanks for all your support.

I had Mirena for 3.5 years and I also suffered from exhaustion, mood swings and bloating. When I got it removed with the hope of getting pregnant, nothing has happened for 6months now although my periods have become regular. My tummy still looks bloated and I fear that maybe the IUD damaged my uterus or something because I feel the pregnancy symptoms every month only to be disappointed with a period a few days later. Is anyone having the same trouble, not being able to conceive? I'd love to hear from you coz my OBGYN said once my period started, all should be normal.

I made my appointment today to have my Mirena taken out in 2 days.
I have had similar symptoms, low libido, hair loss, and weight gain.
I have been on Weight Watchers since Jan. the same time I got my Mirena inserted and I am at the same weight. I am so frustrated with the weight and the other symptoms I just want it out.
But I did like not having to take a pill everyday. Is anyone considering having the Copper T inserted? It releases no hormones.
Just wondering.

Been having trouble with bleeding after sex....it's not harder than usual or rough or anything. (I know, TMI) but this last time the bleeding refused to stop. I have extreme pain in my back and my left side, I can't sit or stand, i can only lie down. I called my OBGYN and she said she wouldn't worry...oh and she can get me in on May 20th...it is the 2nd now, and I'm telling you this is unbearable.
I, too have experienced extreme moodiness. I will go off on my children and husband for no real reason. I never thought there cold be another reason for this, who would think birth control could do this to you? I do know that i was not this person before having Mirena inserted.
I am calling my doctor to see when I can have this removed. And if she can't/won't do it soon, I am going to someone who can.

I posted on this site a few weeks ago after the first try my dr. had at getting my IUD taken out. It didn't work for my doctor as the IUD strings were misplaced, so they ordered an ultra sound, which turned up normal. So then I had to go to an actual OBGYN to try to retrieve it. This also failed! They couldn't find the dang thing! So I had surgery today to remove Mirena. The surgery went absolutely fine, but really I didn't feel it should have had to come to that! They don't tell women this when they get Mirena placed. So, that's my story. I'm just relieved it's over and it's out! I hope to lose some weight after this, and am also hoping for smoother moods and less acne! Thanks all for your stories!!!

I am 20 years old and had basically tried every form of birth control before Mirena (the pill {multiple kinds}, the NuvaRing, and the shot). My OBGYN talked to me about the possibility of Mirena. Normally they do not do it for people who haven't had children but with my track record with other forms of birth control we decided to go ahead with it. I got it put in place in October 2007 and passed out on the table. It was the worst pain I have had in my entire life and had to lay down in the hospital bathroom for 45 minutes after insertion because I couldn't even stand up. I cried the whole hour ride home after and my boyfriend had to carry me up three flights of stairs into my apartment. I bled for a month and a half after insertion and then didn't see any blood until a month ago. I started getting very bad cramps (have had them all along but not bad, they said my body had to get used to it so I could have some cramping for a few months), after one day of the horrible cramping I finally had to go to the ER. The Dr's told me I had a 3inch ovarian cyst that had ruptured. After CT scans, and multiple internal and external Ultrasounds they found it was still 1 inch long and put me back on the pill to shrink it. They claim Mirena couldn't be the cause but I am doubtful, I have never had a cyst until Mirena and I think it is the cause. Ovarian cysts are on the side effects chart for Mirena so it is interesting that they told me that can't be the cause. Anyway, after weeks on 3 Vicodin a day and constant pain I started feeling better but occasionally still have pain. The doctors also thought they might have to surgically remove it which could put at risk my possibility of having children (SCARY!) If another cyst comes I will get it removed, I have had it for 6 months and can't deal with anymore. I'm about ready to be celebit until I'm ready to have kids because going through all of this is not worth it. If anyone has had the same problems and got it removed can you email me and tell me how bad it hurt? I am going to be really upset to have gone through all of this to have more awful pain to have it removed. Thanks- my email is ******

It has been 7 days since I had the Mirena inserted. I have not been ab le to find the "string". The only reason I checked was I woke the morning of the 6th day with extreme lower back pain on the left side. If you have had this side effect, please contact me at ****** It is only getting worse and I will most likely be in the obgyn in the morning as I cannot stand this pain.

SO HAPPY to have found this forum. I had been having ALL of the symptoms already mentioned here, except that I actually lost weight(maybe from the stress the damned little demon was putting me through). Anyway I had been searching various health sites about all this stuff, and just on a whim decided to google mirena side effects because I did not remember there being very much listed in the brochure or much mentioned by my obgyn, but because I was so foggy headed all the time, thought I may have forgotten something....well as you all know, none of this was brought to our attention prior to insertion and I actually googled Mirena b4 having it put in, and never found any info like this. That was in May 07...so I got mine out April 9th, 08 started my period 4 days later, and still fluctuating between heavy down pours and spotting after 6 days. ?'s for anyone who had theres out....how long b4 you saw improvements on problems....especially acne, moodiness and my worst thing has been excruciating joint and back pain every day....but I want to know about any of the symptoms and how long b4 they got better. Hang in there girls and give yourselves a big pat on the back for dealing with this mess and having the courage to make your voices heard. Thank-you for listening.

I was told the same thing "A little cramp" .. I never have had kids before and was told this is easier for women who has have kids. I was in tears when the insertion took place. could not walk immediatley... I was about to faint, got to the point they got something for me to vomit in because I was starting to retch about 15 minutes after insertion. The pains were soooooooooo intense. I was told that this is what it is like when a woman has contractions. But I also had some hydrocone which helped a lot. I took IB - profen first ..800mgs I took lasted for maybe 3.5 hr. So then i took some Hydrocodone and that worked great. Got a good nights sleep. BUT i have never had pains so bad. At times I was crying or wanted to fall to my knees. I was afraid I was gonna wake up in my sleep in pain cuz the hydro was only to work 4-6 hrs. but I slept for a good 8 hrs. When I work up, a few pains here and there but nothing like yesterday.. Took 3 IB profens this morning - 7 hrs ago and I just noticed some discharge.. Mucus n blood I guess from the cervix which is normal? Thats what i was told. could happen on and offf for 6 months. i called after hrs to check on it cuz I was freaking out -- what was it... my obgyn told me what is was. She also was surprised that I was just about painfree less than 36 hrs later! So far so good for me. Now origiannly have been told since I went directly from Deprovera to merina, I have a very slim chance of getting my period at all. I have been on deprovera for 10 years. I need to lose weight and did not want my period (which was hell when I did get it before deprovera) so this is why mirena was choosen by me. So I am hoping it works for me!

Okay now i'm really scared- I just got the Mirena put in yesterday, I used to get the depo and had some horrible side effects from that. I have not had any major side effects as of yet (too soon i know) except some minor cramping.
I know if any of the same side effects come back as the depo i will have this thing out so fast.
I had lost 15 pounds since stopping depo and a am so worried that will come back now that i have read all of the side effects on this page.
The one question i have is since having the mirena put in i kind of feel like i have a tampon in and was wondering if that feeling is normal or will maybe go away with time.

I am a 31 year old mother of 3 boys. I had my Mirena inserted in June 2006 at my Dr's suggestion to trying a "worry free" birthcontrol. I had it inserted while on my cycle & it hurt pretty bad. I almost passed out & it took the Dr almost 30 mins to do the procedure because I wasn't dilating. I cramped for a couple days afterwards and then that was it............the beginning of the worst decision I ever made for my body! Since I've had my Mirena in, I've been back to the OB/GYN 4 times with pain & complications. I also have not had a period or any bleeding at all since insertation. About 1 month post insertation I had to go to the ER because I developed a Cyst on my Ovary that had ruptured. A pain VERY simular to labor! I visited the GYN Dr again at about 6 months after insertation to make sure it was in place & because of pain and back aches/cramps & I had developed more cysts on my ovaries. The Dr said that 20% of women who have the Mirena develop these Cysts. Shortly after that visit another one ruptured. At 9 months after insertation, I began experiencing pain with intercourse, still was cramping, having headaches and I went back to the Dr. The Doc said everything "looked" fine. But I was NOT fine......I had started gaining weight slowly about 2 months after insertation & have not STOPPED! My GYN Dr keeps saying that it's all in my head & can't find cause to my issues, his Diagnosis... Pelvic pain & Over Eating.
Today, I have had my Mirena in for almost 2 years and here's what I have been experiencing:
ME----------------------------------------------
Weight Gain---60lbs to date
Daily back aches---Constantly taking Ibuprofen & Tylenol
Depression---Family Dr gave me Prozac last month
Anxiety---Family Dr gave me Xanax last month too.
"Feel Like I losing my Mind" feeling
Ovarian Cysts---was given Naproxen by OB Dr
Enlarged Breasts--went from a C cup to a DD cup (1st side effect I noticed)
Acne---developed on my back
Headaches---Lots of them!
Night Sweats/Excessive Sweating
Hot Flashes
Mood Swings---(Bad!)
Dizziness
HUSBAND-------------------------------------
Says "That D*mn thing is Sticking me" & he's always "sore"
Due to Insurance issues I was not able to have it removed. My employer at that time did not cover BC. My family DR has been my Best Friend lately and Tells me to have it removed. He feels that it is what is causing all my problems and that suggestion was also recommended by the ER DR. I saw last month with my Anxiety attack.
I recently became eligable for Ins through my new employer & call my Dr yesterday to have it removed and to go back on the pill. I made my Appt for April 22nd.
BUT.......................................they called me today & told me that before I can have it removed I have to come in for a "Consultation" with my OB/GYN DR and explain to him WHY I want to have it removed, so we can "TALK". ARE YOU SERIOUS??? I explained why, all that I've been through, the weight gain, the past visits to them should be reason enough. I was told that I'm the "ONLY" patient who has had/mentioned these problems and if my Family Doc had any test or any records that support why I should have it removed I should bring it with me. I'M SHOCKED at their answers and you better believe My hubby & I are going to that "TALK with the Doc" next Wednesday! I Will have it removed on the 22nd!
I've done alot of research on my Mirena lately & I wanted to tell my story about my "Mirena Struggle". I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who has experienced these side effects and that I wasn't really losing my mind. I hope that after removal, I can get my life back and my health back in order. I wish you all the best in your decisions and I will keep you posted on my "recovery".

I posted on here several months back. I got the Mirena taken out at the beginning of January after having it in for about 6 months. At first I loved it because I didn't connect all the symptoms I was having to the Mirena since my obgyn reassured me that there were no side effects with Mirena. I had many symptoms including severe insomnia, weight gain (about 40 lbs in 6 months), acne, facial hair, sharp cramps, back pain, just to name a few! After moving and getting a new dr I was able to convince her I needed it taken out. I lost 15 lbs in the first 10 days of having it out without trying (now I'm actually trying to get the rest off) and started sleeping better about 4-6 weeks later.
Anyway...now my problem is that I am not getting my period and I'm not ovulating. I had my period about 2 days after I got it taken out but haven't had another one since. My husband and I were so excited that first month of not having my period because we thought we were pregnant. MANY pregnancy and ovulation tests later we are worried we may never get pregnant. I am wondering if anyone else has had problems conceiving after getting Mirena taken out. Or if you were able to conceive, did it take a long time?

Hi there,
I had the Mirena IUD inserted on my 32nd birthday, 4 months after my son was born. The cramping was reminiscent of having my period but I felt better the next day.
I have been happy with the fact that I have had absolutely no trace of a period and maybe just a smidge of spotting here and there, until last week when I actually had to use pads for a week and then had old blood showing days later.
So far this is the first day that I haven't had to use a pad and I've noticed that I'd had migraines for the first time, I am exhausted but then I have a 9 month old who often gets up to feed during the night. I can't comment on my breast because I am breast feeding right now too.
I am extremely hot all the time. Just feel like there is an internal heater or as if I were pregnant again, I have noticed pimples around my face that I never used to have. They are big and painful. I am now cramping off and on and it can sometimes be quite painful.
My eyes are extremely dry and I often have to try to make myself cry to get tears to moisturize them while I am driving, My body does feel itchy often - until reading this site I often put it down to the fact that it was during winter and my skin just dried out.
My biggest concern is that my knees are extremely painful, and my lower thighs above the knee are often sore as though I have been lifting weights. I am out of breath when walking up our stairs and yet I have managed to lose 20 pounds of weight since having my baby, so the sensitivity and pain in my knee just does not make sense.
I've also experience light headedness and every once in a while out of the blue I'll get some tingling in my left hand. Weird.
I think I will print this out and show it to my OBGYN because he is very dot the i cross the t type.
Wow, thank you everyone for sharing your info, maybe all my symptoms are that from Mirena too. I certainly didn't have them prior to MIrena insertion.
Take care

I am 32 years old, and mother of two children, 5 and 2. I had Mirena for 1 year and 7 months. I just had removed 2 weeks ago. I am hoping that my side effects will go away quickly. My experience was horrific: mood swings, loss of sex drive, dizziness, hair loss especially around forehead and scalp, lower back pain, fogginess, word loss...the list goes on. My number 1 complaint is the mood swings, irritability and rage which pretty much occurred all the time, but more intense before and during my period (which were lighter - the only good thing to come out of this). My other huge complaint was I had absolutely no sex drive and would rather do anything else than even think about sex. I did not have any weight gain, although I run constantly and was also put on Zoloft for PMS and may have caused a loss of appetite. I often felt off-balance and was constantly walking into things, even hit myself in the face with my car door during my period which is when fogginess became more intense. The worst part of all, was that once my period/rage ended, the guilt of how I treated my husband and children during that week was indescribable and would cause a feeling of worthlessness and despair. I had rational thoughts that my family would be better off without me. I shutter to think of what may have happened if had not been on a low dose Zoloft. I am a high energy, Type A, cheerful person with tons of drive, and would push through at work and at home, but for other types of people I truly feel that this medication could be deadly and could ruin your marriage and your life. At times I was convinced that I was bipolar and going crazy or having a nervous breakdown. I had a few panic attacks and anxiety, but I would just run 5 miles a day to take the pain away even though I felt like other things were falling apart. My OBGYN said "Absolutely NOT Mirena, it's PMS babe, you are getting older". Without a doubt, it was Mirena - DO NOT have this inserted. I made a hasty decision when my daughter was 3 months old without doing the proper research after my blood pressure was elevated on the pill, and did not begin to put the side effects together until a year after having. The removal was so easy and although I am going through a hormone adjustment - mood swings and lower back pain, and am extremely tired, but I am already beginning to get my sex drive back. My husband had surgery and was cleared. I can not wait to feel like myself again and get off the zoloft too. Mirena should definitely list more side effects.

Hello! I had the Mirena inserted in April 2007, 8 weeks after giving birth to my third child. I was wanting to be on some kind of birth control, until we were sure about doing something permanent. Instantly, after getting this inserted I started experiencing weight gain, severe cramping and bleeding. I had always had heavy periods, except when I had been on the pill. My periods were heavier on the Mirena then anything else. I would spot or have my period at least 3 weeks out of the month. Also, I would have severe pain in my back and around my kidneys. I would get constant yeast and vaginal infections with this as well. I had never had a problem with this prior. I would tell my OBGYN and they would just say this is a normal side effect with this device. I was sent in to have an ultrasound done to determine the placement of the Mirena. The ultrasound tech and her supervisor questioned the placement of the device, but my OBGYN thought that the placement was fine. I would be miserable with pain and had no sex drive at all. This was never a problem for me before. My husband said that this was great birth control, because it made women never want to have sex. I think that he was right. Also, I noticed that I experienced mood swings with my kids, severe headaches, palpatations and chest pains. I just couldn't wait to get this birth control out. My husband got a vasectomy in September 2007 and left for Iraq the first of December 2007. My symptoms kept getting worse, so I decided to get this device taken out. I had it removed on Janurary 24th, 2008. I discussed my weight gain with my OBGYN. She said that I was getting older and it was my metabolism causing me to gain the weight. Weird that I lost 15 pounds after giving bith to my 3rd child, until I had the Mirena put in. Then, I gained 33 pounds in that amount of time. More then I ever gained during any of my pregnancies. Since, I have I had the Mirena removed I have lost 13 pounds and been able to go down 2 jean sizes. I have no headaches, no cramping, no pains and my chest pain disappeared. Also, I had been breaking out with acne and never had this problem before. Now, my face is clear and no problems with acne. Of course, now that my husband is gone my sex drive is back after having this removed. I know that all the OBGYNs love this Mirena for birth control and say that it doesn't have these side effects, but read the boards. Just because the drug reps that are selling this, think it is wonderful doesn't mean that it is great. What else do you expect them to say? The OBGYN group I see has 6 doctors and each one has told me that they have had 4-6 women with the same problems. Most of the women have had this removed, after all the complications. That is just with one group. I think the FDA needs to investigate the "TRUE" side effects with Mirena. I question how safe this product really is. It seems that there are numerous complants about this device, but nobody seems to take it seriously. Best of luck to everyone else. I know that I am starting to feel more like my old self after getting the Mirena removed. I know that it was not the birth control for me.

Hello,
I have 3 friends who have liked the Mirena, so on their testimony and after talking to my OB/GYN, I decided to give it a try. I have a history of a J Pouch surgery when I was 19, and I'll be 37 in June. My husband and I luckily have one little girl, but it's doubtful we'll have more due to multiple reasons, and I was doing this so that we could finally have spontaneity. We've been together for nearly 18 years.
I had it in for only 5 days. I suffered things I've NEVER suffered: raging hormone headache, bloating like I couldn't believe, anxiety, a panic attack, not just crying jags - SOBBING jags that would come on in a panic, a "doom" feeling and this horrible feeling of loneliness. I was jittery... I don't drink caffeine, but this felt like I'd just had 15 espressos... I had all this nervous energy, but no focus.
After just 5 days, I went in and had it removed. After removal, I continued with the headache for 4 days, these were headaches unTOUCHED by any pain meds, bloating that finally abated and fatigue like you couldn't believe. I never nap, and I spent one full day on the couch without any motivation to do anything, and I also napped everyday and slept at night for 10 hours three nights in a row.
My doctor and nurse were understanding. They said I might have been "Hormone Naive," as I've not been on any kind of birth control, but whatever... it was a horrid experience and I'm so glad it's out. My doctor said I was in the minority of people with this kind of experience to birth control, but she didn't deny its existence, nor did she persuade me to try to "give it more time," and for that I was thankful.

I came across this site when looking for information on Mirena lawsuits. I feel I should be part of one. I don't care about the money- just about getting this device off the market. Here's my story:
I had the Mirena inserted in April 2006 (eight weeks post birth of my first child). At insertion I had the usual pain. Nothing compared to birth! Within a week I was experiencing painful intercourse, foul odor, and stabbing pains in my stomach. I had lost a lot of baby weight by this time, but now that I look back, I really didn't lose much since. I worked hard just to stay at the same weight. I also developed a rash all over my body, which I later had diagnosed from a dermatologist as some sort of skin disease, usually caused by an allergic reaction- bad news- once you get it, you have it for life.
After several rounds of varying degrees of antibiotics (I was nursing at the time and for one round had to pump and dump), my doctors felt the infections were gone and I was okay. Soon though, I'm back in the office still complaining of these stabbing abdomen pains, painful intercourse, etc. My doctor tells me it's not the Mirena, it's something else. He convinces me to keep it in, after I asked to have it removed. (I'm the one who spent the money here, right?!) Now I have gone through PID diagnoses, you're in menopause diagnoses (I'm 24 at the time). They check to make sure the IUD is in place, and it is, so they basically write me off as crazy.
My next step is to go to my primary care and ask him if the stabbing pain could be something else- I do that and he sends me to a gastro doctor. I end up with a colonoscopy and endoscopy which reveal nothing wrong. After a few more months of pain, I go to a new GYN. This one says, let's do a new ultrasound and get the thing out. But unfortunately, I had to have shoulder surgery before he could schedule- so I'm out of it for a few months (and pain medicated so not feeling the pain down there).
In January 2008, I finally have the time to schedule to get the IUD removed. I get it out and it's not painful at all and I don't even bleed. I start menstruating normally again (hadn't had a period most of the time I had the IUD in). A few weeks later I start hemmoraging. I get an ultrasound. I have a mass on my uterus. I have surgery to get it removed. Biopsy comes back. It's benign (praise God). But, it's inflammatory tissue, cause from the IUD. More money down the drain and more time and mentally draining. Basically, the IUD got so infected that the tissue formed around it and attached to my uterus. YUCK.
Now I'm not one for lawsuits, but if ever there was a product that shouldn't be on the market- I'm going with the Mirena IUD. Every girlfriend I have that has had it, has had it removed within the first year (save my mother- but she had that old IUD in her for over 20 years-another yuck).
It's a money making machine for doctors and the drug company. And it's a super-pain. I'm feeling so much better and I'm losing weight again! Now if I could get rid of this rash! (Not likely!)

I just had my MIRENA inserted today, OUCH! I asked the nurse prior to insertion if it would be painful and she said I would be "Alittle Crampy" but that was it. ALITTLE CRAMPY is not the word for it, I felt and have felt for 51/2hours since the insertion like I am in labor. Thank god I had some old Vicodin in my med cabinet because it was UNBEARABLE! I decided on this birth control because I didn't want to gain weight and had with ALL the others I have tried but maybe that wasn't the right decision? I don't want to gain weight, lose my hair, get facial hair(YUCK) or get even moodier than I already am. I already have NO libido how could that get worse? My poor husband, I will have to get him a lifetime membership to the "soap in shower club". Can anyone give me hope? Please , please, please!

My Mirena was taken out four weeks ago. Apart from some side effects not leaving yet (occasional nausea, IBS), I had some surprises: the eczema on my hands which had been there for AGES, has suddenly cleared up completely. My hands are normal again!
I also had trouble with my labia, especially on the left, it was hugely swollen (which didn't make me feel good about myself as you can imagine. It looked horrendous). My OBGYN said it would go away on its own, but it didn't. Now my Mirena is out.... it has returned back to normal in a few weeks time! Has anyone had the same experiences?

First I would like to say thank you to all the posts for filling me in on the side effects of Mirena. I wish I would have read this sooner!! Here's MY short story....II am 34 years old no children and do not want them, I was having problems with birth control for years making me sick. I saw the add on TV for Mirena and though "HEY THIS IS A GOOD OPTION FOR ME" Well....BIG MISTAKE...On Saturday December 22nd I had Mirena inserted. I was told it would take 5 minutes and have no pain at all. A little grossed out by the fact of having to do this while with my period I still went ahead with it. My 5 minute painless insertion turned out to be an excruciating 45 minutes of poking pinching and jamming this piece of plastic into my cervix. The pain was unreal but subsided a few minutes after. I though I was in the clear....OH NO....about a 1/2 hour after the cramping started. I thought my Uterus was being shredded inside me the pain was so bad. I called my OBGYN and he said this may be a result since I had no children. He told me to take Motrin and in a day or so I'd be fine. WELL.....for the past 6 days I have been in so much pain I couldn't stand up. I had horrible bloating, diarrhea, bad headaches & cold sweats in the middle of the night. During the day I was nauseous probably from the pain but who knows. I literally killed my stomach with all the Motrin I was taking. Yesterday after being in pain all week, ruining my xmas and almost my new years, I googled Mirena Side Effects and found this site!! thank you ladies....I immediately called the emergency line for my obgyn got a doctor on call and told her i wanted it OUT NOW. She made me stick it out till this morning 9am. I went in and MY GOD IN HEAVEN the pain of taking it OUT was worse then putting it IN however the pain lasted for only about 3 hours and I'm OK now. My abdomen is still bloated and very tender but I am sure that will go away. I printed all of these side effects and gave a copy to my doctors office and told them that maybe they should read up some more before they put any of their patients through this. My mother was right....it is not natural to put something foreign up into your body and it be healthy. So, to all.... DON'T DO IT!!! its not worth it!!
Happy New Year!!

I thought I was going crazy until I found this site. I had my Mirena put in on Nov. 19 2007. It was a pretty painful insertion. I never got dilated nor was I told to take anything before hand. My doctor (Who is a man and not a Ob) Told me there would be slightly to no pain at all. I got into the car and immediately started having horrible cramping on my left side. I felt extremely dizzy and hurried home. When I got home I began spotting pretty severely. Almost blood clot type spotting. Two hours after I was balling my cramps were so bad. I could barely pick up my 9 month old daughter. That whole night and the next day I was miserable. I felt like I had morning sickness. I had an allergic reaction to Ibuprofen so I usually only took Tylenol. I took three still with no help with the pain I called my doctor to see if he'd call in Tylenol with codeine. That helped a little but I was still pretty crampy. After a week of bad cramps with little help from the Tylenol, I started to get really nauseas. I can barely get out of bed in the morning though I stay awake most of the night. My body is always achy especially in my legs. I have shooting pains down them. I am severely depressed and started having anxiety attacks which I haven't had in years. The cramps aren't as bad but the emotional side of it as well as constant back pain is making me miserable. Not to mention I have gained 8 pounds in less than a month. I am normally pretty consistent in weight. I am really considering removing it. I had a very weird period that came a few days late and consisted of only clots of blood. I am already kind of a hypochondriac but I have been feeling the exact same symptoms most of you have posted. Even the shortness of breath with a tightness in my chest. I was just starting to run everyday before i put the Mirena in, I can barely do a brisk walk just a week after it was put in. I have an appointment tomorrow to talk about removing it. It will suck since my insurance didn't pay for it. I paid 698.00$ cash. But if it gives me my life back I will get it out as soon as possible. Has anyone had these symptoms and had them go away after a few months? All my friends are saying stick in there but I don't know if I can. If I had found this site before I got it put in I would have ran the other way! Thanks for all your posts!

I had the Mirena inserted over a year ago.And up to this point had no problems. For the past month, family, friends, and co-workers have mentioned (very nicely) that my hair seems to be thining. I had noticed some hair loss, which seemed to be more than normal, and just shrugged it off. But then my kids were complaining and pulling off strands of long blond hair from their clother, and the furniture, and saying; Mom what's going on, your hair is everywhere?. Then I really knew I had a problem, and have noticed considerable amounts of hair all over my clothes, and I do seem to have less hair. I made an appt. to meet with my obgyn.

Hello,
My name is Danielle, I am a 27 year old with 2 boys 6yrs and 8 months, I am happily married and have always been quite happy and relaxed until I had the Mirena IUD put in. I had the IUD placed at the end of October with advice from a friend and my ob of 7 years. Big mistake, here is my story, I hope it help someone.
4 Saturdays ago at work I felt pain in my ovaries, I chalked it up to ovulating, Sunday morning I felt a bit better, I got out of the bath on Sunday night and I felt weak, dizzy, like I was going to pass out, my heart was beating so fast, I placed an emergency call into my ob, she basically told me the IUD was not the cause for these symptoms and to relax and try to get rest...(she basically told me it was in my head) Monday morning I was terrible, nausea, anxiety, nervousness, depression, rapid heart rate... I called my ob and demanded an appointment to get the IUD taken out, as I had never felt that way in my life! I was able to get in that afternoon, however when I got there I was seen by a nurse that I have not seen in the office ever, and I have been with them for 7 years, this I thought was odd but I went with it, she brought me into the room and told me there is no chance that the IUD was causing my symptoms, I was very emotional over the situation, she told me to give it a bit longer and she gave me packets of Lexapro a depression/anxiety med. Me like a fool went along with it, I took a Lexapro when I got home at noon or so and at 7:30pm I thought I was having a heart attack, I came down stairs and my husband immediately knew something was wrong, I was crying, my heart felt like it was going to jump out of my chest, my arms and fingers on my left side were numb and I was freezing and could not stop moving! I went to th ER and was treated for an anxiety attack and I had the ER DR take the IUD out, from here I was hit with the infamous "Mirena crash" the next two days I was sick but nothing I could not handle, on Thursday I was so sick I could not move off of the couch, I mean sick, nausea to the point it was hard for me to sip water, I had to have a relative come to watch the kids while my husband brought me to the ER once again, I was treated for dehydration and nausea, during all of this I was still depressed and anxious which made it all the worse, my 3rd and final trip to the ER was this past Sunday the 8th, I was so depressed and sick, I made an emergency call into my family physician this time and he told me it sounded like the anxiety was getting the best of me to take a half of Lexapro to calm myself down and to schedule an appointment with him in the morning, I did and 6 hours or so later I was in the ER again, heart palpitations, anxiety, depressed so bad I hated my self and thought I was going crazy, I felt like I could not take care of my own kids, like a terrible wife, and the list goes on, this attack was so bad my hands formed into fist and would not release, at the ER all of my blood work came back fine, EKG fine, chest x-rays fine??? they gave me Loranzapam which has helped quite a bit. it has been about a week since then and I am beginning to feel better, each day seems to get better, I still have some nervousness(kind of feels the I was just told I had to go in for a major surgery) and some nausea through out the day, but overall I feel better. I do not wish what I and many women have been through on my worst enemy. Please all of you that think you are going crazy you are NOT, and believe me I was bad, I was on the internet every 10 minutes looking different things up about depression, anxiety, everything, it makes you go nuts, please remember that even after you get the IUD out that you may still feel yucky, I did and still do somewhat, you have to give your body time to produce it's own hormones and not synthetic ones from the IUD, keep in mind that some times you will feel like everything is ok and other times you will feel crazy again, it is the nasty remnants of the IUD. Good luck to all of you who are going through this now. God Bless you all. Danielle

I thought I was going crazy. I have pretty much the same problems as everybody else. The pain that shoots down my legs that sometimes make it hard to walk. I now have really bad back pain that I first chalked up to a bad mattress but now I'm not so sure. I have always had migraines but I now have SUPER MIGRAINES!! I have about 4 or 5 a week that leave me in so much pain I can hardly stand it and no amount of drugs work to ease the pain. I now have to see a neurologist for the migraines because my PCP doesn't know what else to do for me. Nobody including my OBGYN told me that if you already get migraines that this might make them worse and maybe I shouldn't use it. I'm on the verge of being alone because of my massive wild mood swings. I feel more depressed than ever and can't lift the black cloud that I feel is always around me. I have no energy or sex drive and my 2 kids want to live with grandma because mommy is CRAZY!! I think it is time to have this taken out and hope my life returns to normal.
