I have 3 children. My husband and I have always been able to chat about getting pregnant and poof! the following month a positive pregnancy test. A few years ago, due to circumstances beyond our control, we decided to put off having any more kids for a few years and Mirena seemed like a great option as I cannot take the pill due to migraines. In 10 months, I gained 30 pounds, acne like a 13 year old girl and my sex drive all but vanished. After removal in March of 2009, I thought I would eventually go back to normal in a few months. Shortly after, we decided that it might be time to have another baby. It has been 11 months and despite ovulation tracking and charting, nothing. I have been off the Mirena longer than I had been on it so it's not what my doctor says that I need time to work the hormones out. I saw nothing in the literature that said infertility except as a result of PID which I did not develop. I have seen a number of blogs from women who were able to get pregnant very easily right away but I have had no luck. We are now looking into adopting or fostering. I am more sorry than I can say that I gave this method a chance.

Wow, ok well this isn't a complaint about mirena. I had the mirena put in Nov. 2006 and still have it to this day. i haven't had any of the problems that you ladies have described.I don't even get a period , i haven't had one since ive been on the mirena. I think the problem is that there are to many doctors that aren't informed enough about this birth control. First of all to fedup2009 your doctor shouldn't even recommend mirena if you haven't had children. That is one of the guidelines for inserting it. You must have had at least one child and be in a stable long term relationship because if you have multiple partners while on mirena it increases you risk of PID.Anyway the only side effects ive had is occasional cramping but thats it.I live in Maryland and there are a lot of really good doctors in my area. The doctor that put it in was Dr. Ortega and she is excellent. When i switch doctors due to insurance reasons my new doctor said that Dr.Ortega did a great job putting it in.So for anyone thinking about the mirena i think it would be a good idea to find a doctor that really knows a lot about it especially since the mirena is still fairly new to some doctors.

I had Mirena put in after the birth of my 3rd son, on 4/2/09, just 6 weeks ago today... I have been cramping really really bad, and had started bloating (bad)... Sex was just painful, it would hurt so bad, and I didn't know what to do... The nausea, ongoing sleepiness, depression, handfuls of hair falling out, and mood swings... I figured it would just pass... I decided that I was going to have my dr take it out today, only because I couldn't stand the pain anymore... ONLY 6 WEEKS!!! I found that I have gained 10 lbs in the 6 weeks...When my doctor took it out, he had it swabbed immediately, not a good sign... He then told me that he had to do an exam at that time... I found out today that I have an Endometrial Infection, which partners with the PID... I have to take 2 antibiotics and see my doctor on June 1st... I also requested the depo shot... I really hope that I will be okay, and I hope all of you will too... My heart goes out to you all... I know that I've been in tears since I left the doctor office, I don't understand how someone can make something that can hurt anyone this bad...

Hi, Ive had the Mirena for 2 weeks now and it has been TERRIBLE, I have had terrible sharp pains off and on... I have never had kids but is a contraction like the pain that I am feeling? My doctor suggested that I have it put it since I felt sick with the pill and specially if I am not ready to have a baby yet. I've been married six months now.... I don't know if this will go away and I don't know what to do, the only thing good about this is that my sex drive is much better, lol... but this is terrible what should I do? Should I have it taken out and will it hurt?

HI! I posted on 8/18 and let me tell you this has been the worst week of my life. My antidepressant did not work for my PMDD and I was waay crazy, my husband was about to admit me into the stress center. I called my doc to have the IUD removed after reading your posts and they said my symptoms were not mirena side effects and actually made me feel bad about making the decision to have it inserted! saying I must have really forced the doctor into giving it to me. I was supposed to have an appt to check for PID and infection but I went to my reg doc and got an appt for a tubal, cuz I am not going through this anymore. I'm not bleeding during my period, but I have terrible side pain. THis site really saved me!! Thanks

I had my son July of 06. at my 6 wk i had it inserted. For some reason my body wasn't adjusting to it. Just constant bleeding, discharge and headache. so in Jan of 07 I had it removed.I became preg in Oct 07, it was ectopic. My new OB did a HSG found out that my tubes actually have blockage. This wasn't a problem before. I ve never had a STD, PID or anything. Then i was rushed to the ER two weeks ago and gues what another ectopic. This time it ruptured. The worst pain ever!!! I think this is from the IUD but of course all the doctors say it isn't? Why else would this be happening? From what i understand they say that the blockage is right at the part of my tubes that is at the uterus. So now I am on the pill because emotionally i can't go through losing another baby

i have had mirana since july28 2004. i never had any problem with it i though it was a god'sent UNTIL NOW!! over the last 2 years i have had irregular bleeding, odd pain among other things. the bleeding started normal and but now it is very very dark clots and pain OMG it feels like i am being stabbed all the time. i have been to the doctors over and over and over .. they say it is not a side effect it is all in my head. well let me tell you i am a nurse and i know my body like you all do and something is wrong. i am due for it 2b changed and i want it out. i am so afraid of PID or sepsis. i have weird chalky discharge sometimes. and i have been tested for anything and everything under the sun STD wise so i know the pain and all the problems are from this. i have no energy and i am "sad" most of the time. i do not handle stress the way i used to .. my husband says i have changed. not for the bad per say just different. we have 2 children and thought this would be perfect but we were so wrong. good luck to you all... i know lots of women who have it and are fine. but the ones with a problem with it oh man do we ever have a problem...

I am 30 years old and have never had any children. I had my Mirena inserted on on 7/18 (during my cycle). I know it has only been a week but I'm feeling a little concerned and confused.
While having it inserted I was SHOCKED by how painful it was. I, like many other stories I've read, felt like I was going to faint.
Sunday I woke up in at 5:30 a.m. in so much pain! It literally hurt so bad that it woke me up. The same thing happened Tuesday. Night time has been a struggle also. I resorted to taking Tylenol PM to knock myself out.
I asked my doctor to test me for all STD's to ensure that I would not have a PID, but I'm still apprehensive. I realize I need to give it time... but gosh it sucks being a girl! I'm glad I haven't had any emotional side effects and hope that I never do!

I JUST HAD MY MIRENA REMOVED BY THE EMERGENCY ROOM. I HAD NO IDEA OF ALL THE SIDE EFFECTS.I HAVE A PID AND AM IN A GREAT DEAL OF PAIN. I HAVE HAD THE DEVICE SINCE FEB 2005 AND HAVE SUFFERED FOR ALL OF THESE YEARS. I HAVE BEEN IN AND OUT OF THE HOSPITAL SEVERAL TIMES IN THE PAST TWO YEARS. DOCTORS COULD NOT TELL ME WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ME.I HAVE SEEN THE BEST DOCTORS IN COLORADO SPRINGS AND HAVE HAD MILLIONS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF TESTS DONE. STILL NO ONE COULD FIND OUT WHAT WAS WRONG WITH ME. THIS MORNING I WOKE UP IN A GREAT DEAL OF PAIN AND MY HUSBAND RUSHED ME TO THE ER. AFTER SEVERAL HOURS AND MANY TESTS LATER STILL NO ANSWER SO A OLDER FEMALE DOCTOR DECIDED TO DO A PELVIC EXAMINE AND THERE IT WAS. AN INFECTION AND IT WAS CAUSED BY MY MIRENA. SHE REMOVED THE IUC AND GAVE ME IV ANTIBIOTICS ALSO A COUPLE OF DOSES OF MORPHINE. I STARTED TO FEEL BETTER WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF THE DEVICE BEING REMOVED. THE DOCTOR STATED THAT MANY WOMEN COME IN THE ER AND HAVE HAD TO HAVE THERE MIRENA REMOVED BECAUSE OF THE DEVICE CAUSING INFECTIONS.
